This might be one of the best museums I’ve been to. It is interactive (saving exhibits digital for you to revisit online), informative and comprehensive in the topic of screen culture. Definitely worth a visit and take your time to go through everything, from moving pictures to sound effects to video games to movie making. Did I mention it is also free entry!

It’s free and it’s a must visit especially if you like film and imagery. Newly renovated which looks awesome but the only thing that I really loved about the old ACMI was that they had old school games like space invaders- is there any chance this game and other can return? PAC Mac made the cut and the line to play that is long. Take a look at my Instagram and TikTok for more.

I’ve been to a number of exhibitions over the years here and am yet to be disappointed. My most recent exhibition visited was The Story of Moving Images in late December 2021. It was one of the free exhibitions and proved to be a fantastic visit. You don’t need a lot of time unlike the NGV but still allow an hour or two to find your way around at least. They often have multiple exhibitions running at the same time which is great as it provides plenty of options. Access is easy, the staff are always very friendly and the tram stop is 30 meters away with Flinders Street Station not too far off either. The food options available in the cafe are decent but a bit pricey and there is also a cinema on site as well.

Conveniently located at fed square, has ultra handy access to Flinders station and the wharf. Lots of stuff to see from many different eras of light sound and is visually appealing to young and old. Lots of interactive displays and an awesome way to fill in a few hours and completely forgot the outside world exists. Most of the centre is free and holds some paid exhibitions. Has access to a gift shop and a small cafe, public toilets etc. Has a 7/11 on site. It's spacious and ultra clean and has a cloakroom, and the staff were faultless with their knowledge and assistance. Can't wait to go again.

Highly recommend a visit. Took our 8 and 10 year old grandsons, and it kept them entertained for almost 2 hrs! Lots to see, and lots of things to interact with. Loved the PAC-Man, and the other games in the arcade-trip down memory lane for us adults. Interesting place for young and old, the Staff were excellent too. There is a coffee shop too, didn’t use it this time, but next visit we will-there’s a nice outside area on Fed Square.

A museum that may as well be curated for me - the focus on film, TV and video games makes this a very desirable option for people who may not normally visit museums and lets everyone appreciate the work that goes into these forms of visual media. The sheer amount of interactivity exhibited here means you can easily spend a day here just messing around with things (props to whoever came up with the rearranging movie quotes section as well as the various playable video games on display). Being completely free as well makes this easily my favourite museum in Australia.

Great. Definitely worth a visit even if it's just to reminisce about the TV programmes you watched as a kid. If you are interested in the cinema and it's history this place is a must

Absolutely love the renovations, last time I was here was for the Tim Burton exhibit and it’s completely different and modern! The Disney Animation exhibit is an absolute must see for anyone that loves Disney as it has such incredible original Disney pieces from the 30s! The staff were also very friendly and helpful.

Love my experience at ACMI for Disney Exhibition. It was like I travel back in time to when I was young to see my favourite animation again. Definitely would love to come back for the other exhibition as well.

Great building in an awesome location. Some of the free exhibitions are good. Paying $20 each to see a bunch of Disney concept art and story boards was a bit steep. Exhibition was well set up and the content was ok, but it only takes 20 minutes to see everything. Expected more for the cost.

☆ Always love visiting ACMI. Their most recent exhibition (Disney: the Magic of Animation) was phenomenal. ☆ Staff are always so friendly and welcoming. They really want to make sure that you have the best experience possible. ☆ Plenty of seating around the building and foyer to have a little rest.

This location provides access to a wide variety of activities. Inside, there are many different things to look at and explore. It provides unrestricted admission to its museum, which houses numerous fascinating collections of objects that are certain to pique the curiosity of everyone. This location also features a cafe and a gift shop where you may purchase mementoes to remember your trip by. In addition, there are events taking place in the location, such as free entertainment, singing and dancing competitions. It is a wonderful activity for gatherings of family and friends. Because it is kid-friendly, safe, and instructive, you are welcome to bring your children here. While taking pictures along the way, my buddies and I have a great time exploring this location. Additionally, they give away free collector's cards. A card on which you can tap each individual item, after which you will be able to browse the entire collection on their website. Thank goodness that is not paid for. In addition, there are some events that call for the purchase of tickets. You have the option of purchasing these tickets in advance through their website or upon arrival at the venue itself. Even though I've been here twice, the fact that they manage to keep it seeming fresh and new never ceases to astound me. The first time I visited, I was with my partner, and the second time, I went with several friends. On both instances, I had a good time.

We were walking around Melbourne and checking out it without a real purpose and saw a sign saying that entrance was free. You only had to pay extra if you wanted to experience the exhibit they have running at the time, which would probably be worth it. It seems to be a rotating exhibit. The free part was about the moving picture over the years. When you go in they give you this little disk that had a unique code and probably an nfc chip so you can tap it at each exhibit you liked to "collect" it and go to a website later and vote so the things you saw once again. This really makes you want to check more exhibits out and go all around. I think I connected 45 because at the end they have a spot to check how many exhibits you collected. They even had a station where you could create your own flip book. You would stand in front of a screen which would record you mongering for 3-5 seconds and then at the gift shop you could see the flip book and but it if you wanted. My wife and I both bought ours.. a more personalized souvenir. At the end they have a few kiosks where you can tap your cats to donate and we did that because this is definitely an experience that is worth staying around. I ain't it must get really busy on the weekends, but during the day in a weekend, it was the right amount of busy. I would definitely check it out and kids would love it.

A great venue for low cost education and entertainment. Staff were super friendly, polite and helpful. They took time to explain how the exhibition was laid out and how we could enhance our experience. There is no cost for the main exhibition, aside from an optional donation and some rotating exhibitions that come with a small fee. The artifacts were engaging and taught us a lot about the history of cinema, film and television. We loved the miniature TV rooms across the various eras and the ability to get a flip book of ourselves at the end through the shop. Would highly recommend for people of all ages, a fun day out.

Book tickets online if possible as there was a delay at the front counter, or go upstairs to purchase as there is less of a queue. Marshmallow Laser Exhibition is fantastic, did not see any other exhibitions due to time constraints. Customer Service officer in foyer very friendly and helpful

This was an awesome experience. A great and free event to enjoy. There was so much to look at and learn about. It was cool learning about the history of some of our iconic Australian film and seeing some of the real-life costumes that were used in some films- what a great idea! The retro game section was fantastic too. It is super interactive for families and enjoyable for both kids and adults. The immersive experiences were really fun. I'd recommend to anyone visiting Melbourne to check it out.

A great FREE museum with a ton of things to do. Is it possible to play video games, watch some movies or simply enjoy the story of the Cinema trough the last century. There is also a VR experience, which is still free and is very entertaining! The staff is also very polite, and considering that all the experience is for free is definitely a place to visit while being here in Melbourne.

One of the most interactive, fun, interesting museums I've ever been to. Highly recommend visiting and checking out the exhibitions before they finish. We got to try augmented reality VR and loved it. The Clock exhibition was fascinating and really recommend it (a great concept). It's also family friendly and has food and drink options as well. The best part is that it was completely FREE! Trust me and go to ACMI ASAP!

Loved The Story of the Moving Image exhibition! Very interactive and you even get a ‘Lens’ given to you upon entry, allowing you to tap and save info or creations throughout the exhibition and later retrieve them online. Staff were helpful and informative. Very interesting, took us around an hour to get through and it was Free. The Disney exhibition was a little underwhelming for me, mainly just artwork and drawings on walls, not anything interactive. But if that’s what you’re into, you would enjoy it. For $26 adult entry, I think there isn’t much value.

I’ve been here for a few of the exhibitions before, to be honest i feel it’s a bit over priced for what you get considering places like the NGV are free. The exhibitions are good but usually mainly just framed movie art etc. I think due to this when it comes to the Disney exhibition and ones similar they shouldn’t be charging kids tickets when it’s not exactly interactive in anyway. All in all it’s not bad but Melbourne has a lot more places and things to see that aren’t as expensive

Recently went to the free exhibition at ACMI. Thought that post renovation, they have done an excellent job. Very engaging and had lots to see and do. It's also a free exhibition so if you have some free time in the city this is a great time filler. Often there are special exhibition too but they cost money.

A well-curated, free history of the moving image seen through an Australian lens. Lots to look at AND TOUCH. Good for all ages and levels of interest for a couple of hours, with a groovy little gift store containing an excellent selection of books and other things. Cool foyer to hang in too. Now if only someone would open a museum of movie props, sets and costumes next door 😏😁

This place was amazing. The free exhibits were also fantastic and kid friendly. The other cool thing is there was a fire alarm and the staff did a fabulous job evaluating the building. We visited here by chance as it was close to the station, but it turned out to be a wonderful surprise. They offered us a special disc to collect different items that we like, such as old-fashioned toys or an video clip. The exhibition was quite big and they arranged many activities for people to try, which were quite creative, interactive and entertaining. More importantly, it was free!

My experience was genuinely enriching, as I explored the museum's extensive collection documenting the remarkable changes in technology and history within the realm of screens. a truly unique experience. the Story of the Moving Image (free exhibition) really brought us back to early age of the image history, some of the media displayed reminds me a lot of the 19s black and white retro cartoon. what's best is they gave us a physical reel that serve as a memory device so we can simply scan our favorite exhibition and watch it at home

ACMI is bloody awesome. You can't say a bad word about the place. Every city should have one (except you'd have to call it something else of course). This place celebrates the moving image in all its forms. I love cinema (that's what posh folk call movies) and ACMI facilitates this love by bringing out and showing films that matter. They have no kind of ethos in terms of style and genre etc, so you get a real insight here into the world of cinema and its many niches. I've seen union documentaries, remastered classics, music doc's and new releases here and the cinemas themselves are some of the more comfy around and they sport world-class sound and projection technology. They also have exhibition spaces here and along with their running historical sort of stuff, they show amazing collections of movie paraphernalia, props and memorabilia from Kubrick to Burton and beyond. Seriously, this is an incredible resource and all Australians should be encouraged to to get into it. Do it.

When I said Kino was my favourite cinema I was lying. THIS is my favourite cinema. But unfortunately it's going under renovations at the moment (which is unnecessary because it is already PERFECT) so is currently unavailable. ACMI Cinema 2 was basically my home. It even had a peculiar, nice smell that was very comforting. The seats are SO comfortable. The staff are really great and know their stuff. ACMI also show some really interesting retrospectives, as well as normal movies, which is much better than the Astor's itinerary imo. When they showed The Clock, they showed it at a cinema that was underneath the building, and walking to this particular room was so appropriately surreal, because it involved a huge, dark, spotlit passage in which one had to wait in to get in to the screening room, even at like 10, 11pm at night, because this is WHERE THE CULTURE LIVES! It's also close to the beautiful Flinders Station, and they have a cool shop and cafe/ bar. However, once I believe I caught a pretty bad cold in ACMI, after watching some experimental shorts.

My son just loved looking at Alice in Wonderland. So did his Great Uncle and myself (Mum). The tea room that was all projectors, protected an afternoon tea onto a table and the walls, was utterly amazing. It was really well set up, with heaps for parents/adults and children alike. My son especially enjoyed making a card and protecting it and himself into a wall. The history in the exhibit and the modern day Alice in Wonderland was very diverse, fun and interactive. Would go again if it was there next time in Melbourne. (Can't remove photos that are meant to be worth artVo review for some reason)

Unexpectedly excellent. I loved all the old computers and video games. The virtual reality stories were engaging. I thought the Alice in wonderland section might be overpriced but it was excellent and worth the money.

Brilliant museum, ended up spending far longer than I planned here due to all the interesting exhibits. Well worth a visit.

Lovely exhibits and child friendly environment. Plenty of activities and games for all ages. Free entry and friendly service. Good choice for school holidays and they have a Wizard of Oz exhibit going on currently.

I recently visited ACMI for their Alice in Wonderland exhibition. Such an amazing experience! They were very thorough with their information but also managed to ensure that it was interactive and entertaining.

ACMI is great place to watch movie and chill in riverside. You can check good deal of movie screening and cinema related exhibotions in their web site. Highly recomending to those who love cinema and Melbourne.

Amazing place to spend an hour or so out of the sun. It's my favourite place to spend any free time I have that is indoors and not a bar, however their is a bar onsite as well. Free entry and perfect for families and children

  • 5/5 Eric W. 5 years ago on Google
ACMI is a wonderful interactive centre fit for all ages. For the adults, you get to go through the history of media and how it has evolved and how it can still continue to change. For the teenagers or young adults, I highly recommend you go into the 'sensation' section of the ACMI exhibition as there are a lot of fun activities to do there. You get to make shadow images of yourself, sound effects of movie screens and many more! This is also great for young child as there are plenty of games for them to play (Get for the parents who want to just kill some time in the free at zero cost!)

My daughter loves going to ACMI. I can't wait to take her here again after lockdown to see Disney. It's so entertaining we spend a good couple of hours in here. Which is great for me!

So cool for image and film story!! Nice exhibition for free and enjoy so many funny things at here. The exhibition has done a good job of interactivity, and the audience can participate in the project.

Great idea for kids and family activities this school holiday. You won't get tired of the exhibition.

ACMI gives a wonderful insight into the world of cinema and film. Enjoyed my visit and learnt a lot about the evolution of film and television. Particularly liked the ACMI lens that we are given at the beginning of the tour, which allows us to scan each artefact for more information, which can be accessed later at home. Great idea! I went around Easter school holidays times and didn’t realise how busy it got which made it hard to try out the different games and sound rooms. Would definitely go back on an off-peak time. Recommend this place for anyone who loves nostalgia and has an interest in the history and future of film and television.

This Event has been organised with care and attention to detail. It was like diving back in time and live my childhood all over again 😊

  • 5/5 Peter J. 2 years ago on Google
The art display from Disney was absolutely incredible. Especially the detail in the hand drawings from the 1930's. My wife and I really enjoyed ourselves. It was busy, that's to be expected on a weekend.

  • 5/5 Rob J. 3 years ago on Google
Not extensive but intensive, brilliantly designed and very interactive. Great for lots of different ages, kids love playing with things, parents love reminiscing, although is anyone actually listening. Some truly brilliant pieces of history and art. Plus it's free!

Stunning experience of old and new art, the evolution of TV and video graphics, visual effects, behind the scenes, shadow art, games, and plenty to see, it'll take you a good two hours at least to see everything.

Went on a whim a couple years back and was shocked by how much fun I had. I'm usually not a massive fan of museums, but this was a completely different experience. Absolutely loved the video game section, tons of retro games and spent hours trying them out with my brother. Definitely visiting again once it reopens, heard they underwent some renovations so I'm quite excited!

  • 2/5 Nathan R. 2 years ago on Google
This is for adults that appreciate kids Disney cartoons.... not for kids.... $70 and we were done in under 10mins. Go to the free film exhibition next door, it's so much better

  • 5/5 Jay S. 2 years ago on Google
So many great things to look at and interact with, you could spend hour's here. And its free for pretty much all of it.

Went here on Thursday for the Disney exhibition. Loved learning about the history of Disney and how far film and animation has come since the 1920s!! There was lots of space inside the exhibit so you could take your time to read and watch the displays without feeling rushed. We spent about 1.5 hours in the Disney exhibit (this was an additional cost) then we went to the ACMI free area which had so much to see and do! Would definitely recommend seeing the Disney exhibit while it’s here

  • 5/5 David W. 2 years ago on Google
ACMI is an absolute icon of Australia and anyone who hasn't gone should go there is free entry for the main exhibit and usually a paid exhibit that has fantastic content. Just saw the Disney exhibit before it closes and I am glad I did looking forward to what they have to offer next. If you have people who want sometime to do in the city tell them to visit ACMI.

  • 4/5 Cherie D. 2 years ago on Google
Visited the ACMI Disney exhibition, very well layed out, lots of history and beautiful drawings, pictures and Disney paraphernalia to adore!! If you've ever enjoyed a Disney movie you will just love this exhibition, from Pocahontas, The Little Mermaid, Wreck it Ralph, Frozen, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Tangled and so much more just to name a few 👍👍 The only negative was the car parking....make sure you check the rates before you park!

  • 5/5 Carlos S. 2 years ago on Google
It's an amazing place to visit in Melbourne with free entry and several interactive attractions. We also visit the Disney exhibition and it is a must if you like the movies

Amazing place to visit if you have interest in films, cinema. I have passed through flinders street numerous times but never visited ACMI until last week when happen to enter randomly which turned into a pleasant surprise. Its a museum about films, videography and how CGI and techniques are used in cinema and their illusory nature. Really liked this place. Couldn’t complete the tour on the day, will definitely visit again!

  • 5/5 Andy G. 2 years ago on Google
Great experience! Free exhibition and was so cool they had more than one happening at the same time. Wish I had more time here. Highly recommend

Great place if you want to try something different and zone out for a bit. The film and music and visual arts all together and few fun activities there to try. Worth checking out

I only visited the free exhibition: The Story of the Moving Image. This was more than enough for one day. So much to look at, from a wide variety of image based topics and disciplines. They had everything from animation and video cameras, to set design and video games. One of the best exhibitions I've been to. Super interactive and varied. I'll be back to have a look at another of their exhibitions too.

Really enjoyed this place. Reminds me of Te Papa back home in Wellington, New Zealand. Free entry and decent exhibits. Some interactive and there were movie props and heaps of information with each display. The camera display was excellent and loved seeing all the old school gaming consoles and PCs.

Great place to bring your family with young kids or even as a couple. Quite enjoyed the exhibition and all the installations. It's a nice place with modern facilities and enough variety of interesting things to explore and learn. Indulge yourself in enjoyable recollections of past events.

Exhibition-moving picture: it's a free and very educational exhibition, the interior layout is 10/10 for walking around To have a detailed tour, it takes avg two hours to go through everything, but if you are just wandering, 40mins is probably enough. There's a minimum amount of chairs for tiredness so I recommend getting enough rest before diving in, but the contents are actually distinct. Highly recommended! even if you are not a movie/art student you can still find peace in this one.

This was actually way better than we anticipated, even with the other section closed off (they were prepping it with a new gallery). There's so much information to take in, and so many cool displays and lots of interactivity. You also get a small "disc" to take around with you, which you scan at the exhibits you like so you can learn more about it online. The little flip-book you can purchase as a result of one of the exhibits is also really neat, and only $15.

Whilst on my trip to Melbourne I was taken by two of my friends to ACMI, it was a wonderful experience looking at all the different art displays. My second time being there I thought I already saw it all, but to my surprise they already had some new rooms on display, or I just got lost trying to navigate between different rooms. My friend and I visited the “GODDESS” exhibition and although I found it a bit expensive, I enjoyed it thoroughly. I’ll rate them from 1-5 strawberries where 1 is the lowest and 5 is the best: Service: 3/5 🍓🍓🍓 Product: 4/5 🍓🍓🍓🍓 Price: 25$ per ticket 2/5 🍓🍓 Wait: 4/5 🍓🍓🍓🍓 Overall awesomeness: 4/5 🍓🍓🍓🍓

Nice place to spend an hour or two. The video game section and the interactivity is a nice touch. Really enjoyed going through the history of television in Australia. Also saw some mannequins of the Thor and thunder movie characters.

The Goddess exhibit was temporary but really great. It was so good to see so many female pioneers in media be given the recognition they deserve.

  • 5/5 Meg W. 9 months ago on Google
Saw the Goddess exhibition and was brilliant. Both me and my mum loved it. Place is very easy to locate and staff are very friendly. Gift shop items are quite expensive.

Came here for the night time exhibition viewing experience and party - Goddess Nights - the experience was vibrant and bustling. Ticketing was easy, entry was quick even though there was a long line at 7pm. A great selection of drinks, the food was pretty minimal- pizza slices or party pies (lasagne flavoured?!). Although grateful for hot food and at a very affordable price ($6) Great cloaking facilities. The exhibition space is wonderful; down stairs, and well separated exhibition pieces to stop the sound from bleeding, but still draw you in an experiential journey. ACMI is trying hard to improve it’s offering as an alternative to the NGV and has captured the interest of a young market during the day. I’m excited that they’ve offered a nighttime event. I also recommend coming to this venue during the day with family, or seeing a film in one of their super comfortable and modern cinema spaces. Cinema tickets are well priced, membership is also good value, and there is also plenty of free offerings. Worth a visit for tourists and locals alike and an interesting visit for all ages.

Love it here! It’s my little chill place it the city and I take everybody I know here, so far I’ve take 13 people and plan to keep bringing more! It’s free, easy to get to and full of information. Super disability friendly and accommodating. I don’t think words can ever do this place justice so just go already!

Favourite museum Melbourne! If you are a fan of Movies or TV it should be a must visit. They have plenty of interactive exhibits which keep the whole museum entertaining. Free for all ages.

Free entry. Learned some valuable history about movies, theatre & culture. Nice stuff there to inform about the art and craft.

Super cool, highly interactive and up to date. As a gen Zer it is incredibly cool to see how much time and thought went into the moving picture before I can now enjoy video games. There is nothing more amazing than when I saw the games and realised they were new ones I have played before. Because of how up to date the exhibits are, it makes me feel like I am part of this history.
