Came here with my mum and loved it. Lovely man with the glasses out front welcomed us in with a beaming smile and friendly nature. We ordered the antipasto for starters and I ordered the rib eye steak cooked medium for my main. The steak was cooked to perfection, juicy and tender. The mashed potato was smooth, creamy and well seasoned, the veggies were steamed but not overdone and still had a good bite to them, and the mushroom sauce was so tasty. I can honestly say this was one of the best meals I’ve had since coming out of lockdown. Excellent food and service. Will definitely be coming back and recommending to friends and family.

3.6 Busy cafe on Burgundy Street. Somewhat old fashioned decor here. It’s OK inside though and has a surprisingly spacious outdoor seating area that was lovely to sit in today in the warm autumn sunshine. The cafe draws extra marks for providing ice with the table water. There’s barely been a cafe lately that’s not provided warm water, a pet irritation of mine. My long black here was just ok. Middling at best really. My Greek salad though was quite tasty. It looked basic but it tasted good. The good quality feta was particularly appreciated. Service was lovely throughout here from multiple busy and attentive young servers. Not a bad cafe at all. I’d happily return at any time.

Came in with my client who has special needs and requires some time to figure out what he wants (take away), I told the women at the front beforehand that I'm a support worker and my client will take some time to figure out what he wants, and once we decide I'll let her know. After a couple minutes she was visibly getting agitated and forgot about what I told her initially, and because we felt pressured, I ordered a coffee type my client didn't want which in turn frustrated my client and started to raise his voice because he was on edge- what does the women do? Tells us to hurry up and make up our minds because she has other people to serve, which is fair enough, but I told her that I'll let her know when we're ready, I didn't tell her to wait for us to decide and then serve the other people there. Anyway, then the male barista told us to "take it outside" because my client was obviously not happy, insinuating that we were about to get into a physical altercation, which was humiliating. Maybe have a big sign on your front window stating "those with mental health issues and Autism are not welcome", because that's exactly how you treated my client. Absolutely disgusting and discriminatory behaviour and lack of compassion and patience.

Hands down, our favourite restaurant in Heidelberg for food, service, atmosphere and utter kindness. Con, Peter, Johnnie, Katerina, Jack, Katherine, Manisha, Helen and all the staff make every customer feel so very welcome. The chefs are truly amazing, the food is fresh and of the highest quality, and everything on the menu is absolutely delicious. I can’t recommend this restaurant more highly. Try it, and you are sure to become regulars like us!

I went to Cafe Matto yesterday for the first time and have no regrets doing so! The staff were very friendly, quick to clear tables and take orders. I was in the restaurant for less than 20 minutes before my food had arrived and it was hands down one of the best meals I've had at a restaurant. HIGHLY recommend.

Got a BLT for $13 and was expecting to get ripped off like most cafe’s but this place provided awesome value! (i ate the other half of the BLT) Lots of bacon, came with chips, and the gentlemen serving me was a champ. great guy

I was recently in a local hospital finding it really hard eating "hospital food", so my partner purchased a take away chicken Parma with steamed vegies from you guys. It was delicious and just what I needed. Thank you so much.

Definitely love the warmth from welcoming boss and waitress! I ordered Florentine because I prefer smoked salmon over grilled ham in Benedict. Great portion with fantastic taste! Long black is nice, not sour, which I like! Serving breakfast, entree, mains, and deserts!

Coffee good. Lunch service is quick considering it gets pretty busy at this time. Good offerings for lunch. They have long group tables, smaller tables and some couches at the front of the restaurant if you just want a coffee and depending on your dining group and situation.

Great for a quick bite. We had a pizza and a calamari salad. Delicious. Topped off with a pinot noir. Place was packed. People kept coming in trying to get a seat. Poor waiters were run off their feet. Definitely worth a visit.

Delightfully friendly service. Had eggs on toast and a couple of coffees. All excellent. Owner (?) super keen for so early in the morning. At 6:30am I could not match that energy.

This eatery is a Heidelberg icon which has been there for many years. Centrally located with some footpath seating, it’s decor is utilitarian but pleasant. Apart from the specials, it’s menu is etched in stone and the prices are the most reasonable in the area. I have been eating there for years and the quality is consistent and very good. The variety is surprising. The crew, usually the owners plus well trained staff are pleasant, prompt and knowledgeable with prompt service. Water is supplied automatically. Parking is convenient in the free council car park at the rear. (This may alter in the future with the Banyule Council’s lust for development and revenue changing this situation). Walk in is usually OK but booking is advised in peak periods.or you are many. It is one of the few local restaurants opening for dinner excepting Sunday evenings. It is a comfortable experience.

Great place did not expect it to be as good as what it was My sister and I went there randomly , we just felt like going for a coffee and some toast and we pleasantly surprised by this wonderful place. Keep up the great work you are doing because you've got a great business here

I have been going to this wonderful family cafe for around 10 years now. My late husband and I shifted into our new home that first evening and as we were very tired we decided to go looking for somewhere to eat and we came across Matto and it was wonderful and we have been dining here ever since and have introduced many family and friends to it. Thank you to the wonderful Owners and Staff for taking care of us for so long, sadly my husband passed away 2 yeas ago and I have been a few times and everyone treated me like a family friend it has been wonderful and the food is always so good . I can highly recommend this cafe. I am looking forward to an evening meal with family friends this coming Wednesday. Isabel

Went to lunch with a group of people who didn't all turn up at once. The owner had a big big hissy fit saying he had turned away diners while our table wasn't full. He then started removing tables from our setting (angrily) while the person who organised it kept apologising. The food is OK but his staff are excellent.

Very comfortable place to come eat with family and kids. Food amazing to! Service friendly also.

The owner and staff are all extremely friendly and have made made me feel so welcome on my visits here. The best cafe in Burgundy Street, make sure you experience the warmth of their hospitality. The food and coffee are great too.

Cafe Matto is a lovely place for dinner. The meals feel like you are eating good quality food at home. The prices are great.

There is a lot to like about Cafe Matto , I get my coffee here every morning and it’s always terrific, there is always plenty of people here and certainly a very happy place. The menu looks fantastic too. 10/10 keep up the good work

Situated right smack in Heidelberg, this is a non-flashy, unassuming, and extremely family friendly Cafe. It boasts warmth the very minute you step in, and are greeted by the lovely men behind the counter, and ushered to your table, if you're there for a dine in. The food is always yummy, done well, and you'll leave the place with your appetite satiated. Totally recommend if you're out for a good feed in a friendly street.

Just loved the time at Cafe Matto tonight. Had a delicious dinner. The service was absolutely excellent. The staff couldn’t be better. The young chap who waitered at our table was top class. So sorry I didn’t get his name. Friendly and accommodating even though he had to deal with a big table. The girls who brought out our food was lovely n friendly. Forget about all the negative comments about this delightful place - go see for yourself! Great experience!! Thank you 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟we shall be back🤩

The nachos are so nice and tasty and the service is the best had risotto here too it is nice and the wraps are great too

If you have any allergies or coeliac, give this Cafe miss!!! You will feel be very uncomfortable atmosphere and Staff can get rude n use abuse language .

Lovely food and it arrived pretty quickly. Menu is pretty standard for Melbourne cafes but the food is good.

Visited Cafe Matto twice and have not been disappointed. House red was surprisingly enjoyable and the meal was more than satisfying.

In all my life, I have never met a more arrogant individual as the owner. A simple thing as having a coffee ends up in a whole argument! We didn't even have one sip of coffee and ended up walking off in total discused! Should be a -minus 10 far out

We made an unfortunate mistake of choosing this establishment to have a coffee (around noon on a weekday). When I got up and walked up to a waitress to ask her for a bottle of water, the owner (or a manager, I'm not sure) intercepted me and told me that the passageway through the restaurant was reserved for waiters and unless I was going to a toilet I had to sit down. He then came to our table and told us that it was a restaurant where people came to have lunch and people like us who only had coffee essentially just take space and shouldn't get in the way. It's clearly not an isolated incident - he also told two men at a nearby table that they only had coffees and had already spent more than 20 minutes there and if they wanted to stay longer they had to purchase more food. Unless you enjoy feeling like an bothersome and unwelcome intrusion, I suggest you choose a different place.
