Palace Cinemas Balwyn

Cafe Bar Movie theater

👍 Really nice palatial art deco cinema in Balwyn. Some of the theatres are very small and intimate, so be mindful of this as the front seats are very close to the screen. People often mention cinema, staff, theatre, seats, movie, comfortable, experience, cinemas, coffee, intimate,

Rude service and awful cafe food. If I’m ordering, I shouldn’t be interrupted by staff talking to each other in the middle of my order as if I don’t exist. Your 20 year old staff don’t need to be unapologetic over wrong information on food sold to you, dismissive over dirty tables, requests for cleaning “yup!” thrown at you whilst walking away, promising you they will return to get a replacement order but serving other customers instead, throwing their hands at you when you remind them that they had forgotten to come back to you etc etc etc, and other customers mocking and making fun of you when you call out “hi!” to get her attention as she gives you side eye and pretends to not see you, whilst walking past you; the replacement $11 cheesecake was clearly off and stale. The coffee was lukewarm and tasteless. I’m still waiting for the refund of the whole thing- ticket for movie I now don’t want to see and the stale cheesecake I didn’t eat because the staff don’t know how to handle the situation and have left me waiting

Phenomenal venue and the only place I go to watch films nowadays. Audiences are generally respectful and understand theatre etiquette, staff are lovely and the vintage feel of the cinema is the icing on the cake. My partner swears that the choc tops here are the best he's ever had. He'll even get one for the drive home after the movie wraps!

I found this cinema really lovely and clean. Staff were also friendly and helpful. Was worth the 1 hour drive to get there, although I'd imagine parking could be a challenge during a busy period.

Beautiful and nostalgic art deco cinema. We were in cinema 11 which was up stairs and through a few hallways and doors. The seats were cream leather with small tray tables, my partner mentioned it felt like we were in a first class air craft. We bought tickets using a voucher with no issues and my partner enjoyed a slice of cake from the cafe. He said the staff were friendly. The downstairs ladies bathroom is gorgeous and very clean.

Classic and classy old theatre. Art deco glamour and snacks free from polyunsaturated fats from the bistro. Highly recommended. The weekend underground parking is a hidden gem.

Classic old fashioned cinema. Each room brings you the authentic old style from a classic theatre. Interior has been kept well maintained with the old style interior design. Makes me feel like I'm going back in time. Theatres are very relaxing and comfortable. Become a club member and you get many benefits such as cheap tickets or buy one get one free. Old fashioned candy bar full of popcorn, chocolates and ice cream. Staff are all friendly and will help you decide what movie to watch if you are unsure. While waiting for your movie to start, why not begin the night or day with a glass of wine or simply go and have something to eat or have a coffee at the local coffee shops nearby. As darkness falls, the lighting outside brings out the beautyb9f this classic cinema.

We went here on a date night and had a really wonderful time. The staff are lovely, the cinema is beautiful and the seats were really comfortable. We enjoyed the movie, the setting and the theatre. Definitely a place to revisit.

What a beautiful nostalgic theatre! I love coming here and the Westgarth for a trip back in time for special movies! We were in cinema 4, beautiful boutique size with blue velour high seats. They were super comfy with cupholders, but to be honest, I wish they reclined just a little bit. The cafe and bar at the front he's awesome and you can't go past a coffee and panettone and also not forgetting the olive oil popcorn! Beautiful theatre! As for street parking, there is some three hour carparks that you might be lucky to get. Otherwise if it's going to be a busy night at the theatre you're best off parking in the sidestreet.

With a dozen screens at Balwyn, there are plenty of movies/screenings to choose from. They have a range of smaller to larger theatres, seating anywhere from about 30 up to a hundred or more (I am not exactly sure of exact seat counts). The sound and picture quality of every theatre that I have been into have been good. No complaints. The seating is comfortable and most (maybe all???) theatre seats have a small table/countertop attached to put down a drink. Most of the time, there are enough staff at the counter that you do not have to wait long. They have plenty of food and drink options.

I love it here, the vibe and atmosphere are great at this Art Deco gem. I asked for a raspberry spider at the bar and they made one especially even though it's not on their menu! Very kindly staff. The theatres are intimate. A good cinematic experience!

Great cinema showing movies that aren’t showing yet in other big name cinemas. Snacks were reasonably priced. The choc tops were huge. The staff was lovely! Cozy, intimate and super vibey with an interior that actually has personality. I’m going here from now on.

Hidden gem! Screens a bit smaller than modern establishments, and the seats are admittedly a little narrow, but overall the cinema is cosy and immaculately presented. Clean, comfortable and competitively priced, I really enjoyed my experience- thank you Palace :)

Beautiful venue - loved the olden day feel of this place. Really enjoyed the small cinemas - the seats are big and comfortable. Wonderful and friendly staff , went in the morning to watch at 9:35am very quite and basically all the cinemas to the small group of us. Good prices movies and Would like to visit again.

Most gorgeous little boutique cinema. I particularly love the opening movie events on a Wednesday evening. Watch out for the popcorn, it's addictive and each time you go you will wind up getting a larger combo. It's fresh, cooked with olive oil and better than any popcorn I've ever had. They have standard larger cinemas as well as smaller leather arm chairs versions. Love this place.

The bass spilling into Cinema 7 from the main big cinema is completely unacceptable. There needs to be better sound proofing or the bass needs to be turned down. We were watching a movie in Cinema 7 and during quiet scenes our seats were shaking from the bass. Really ruins the experience and immersion.

Really let down by the cleanliness especially considering the time we are in. I even heard another patron mention to his wife that it looked like they didn't even clean it between sessions. I couldn't find a spot that was clean. I had to wipe popcorn off my seat myself onto the floor. Plus, the little table area for your drink was sticky. Other than that it's a great cinema and not insanely loud. Snacks are on the higher side for price but that is expected at cinemas.

Staff friendly and helpful. The coffee was half full, too hot and burnt. Cinema 5 was amazing with great leather chairs and swing out tables. Very comfortable. The lights were still on 10’mins into film! That’s disappointing. It’s a beautiful theatre. They can do a little better.

Gorgeous cinema but rather expensive. Expect to spend about $40-50 for a ticket and food/drink. Parking is incredibly difficult. All surrounding streets are 2 hour parks or resident only. Best to catch public transport or walk. I will be returning because it's an amazing venue. They also offer vegan choc tops!

Cute cinema, with details and styling from past eras kept alive. The food and drink prices were over the top, $11 for a slice of cake from the bar was shocking. We watched new release Poor Things in cinema 8, which as intimate and cosy. Not sure if there was a bigger room to show this latest release, which is what it deserved, but the sound and picture quality was good. This place is a gem on a street that really has nothing exciting on it.

poor customer service used glasses by previous people who were in the cinema were still on the trays where our tickets were given to sit at when I asked the male staff who was at the front customer service area to come to take the used glasses he said that he would come to.get the used glasses he never came I don’t appreciate being lied to mi face!!! The same male staff also lied about seating he told me that seats were already booked when in fact the seats were empty another lie on his part!!! If I could I would give zero stars especially after last nights experience!!!

Seating in Cinema 9 is appalling. They have installed side trays which make the seat narrower than an economy class seat in a plane! Shocking design and anyone sitting in cinema 9 should complain to senior management. Rip the side trays out and give customers a decent seat to sit in. The designer who thought this was OK should be sacked.

July 2022 A stunning repurposed movie theatre. Outstanding refurbished venue, not to be missed. Rarely offered, but: recommended 10 out of 10. Saw Top Gun Maverick. Wot a hoot. Huge sound and comfy seats. Light snacks, coffee and drinks are available in the foyer with comfy lounge areas nearby. Located right at a tram stop for excellent connections. Make this your next movie theatre adventure.

Fantastic experience, each theatre is cosy and intimate. Provides both mainstream and indi films. It appears to be of an older demographic however this made for a pleasant viewing experience without distraction or disturbances. Highly recommend 👍

We love seeing the latest movies in the intimate theatres at Palace Balwyn Cinemas. The leather seats are large and comfortable, with rotating trays for your drinks & food. The smaller theatres are intimate and envelope you in the movie experience. Palace has the best prices if you are a senior or join their movie club. Threat yourself to a movie soon.

Wonderful ambiance at this theatre. The staff are all very helpful & knowledgeable about the films. The St. Ali coffee is so good however at $4.50, it was only half full both times!! Thank you to Jesse for finding the ring that I had lost the week prior!

Relaxing atmosphere. Friendly efficient ticket staff. Coffee served to tables. Mixture of large and smaller cinemas always plenty of available seating. Most enjoyable escape venue.

Better get tickets online, as there is one single queue for everything (tickets, membership, cafe) and wait could be quite long even without crowd. Overall place looks a bit old, but cosy, clean and with polite staff and public.

Lovely old cinema, the actual building is huge with various hallways leading to different cinemas upstairs. Great range of food and drinks, though I’ve only tried their popcorn. We went to see some Japanese Film Festival movies there and will definitely be back

Atmosphere was lovely, relaxing and enjoyable becauce you could actually have a conversation and be able to hear one another, not like most places where its loud. We thought the cocktail menu was small. Need more choices. I know anything can be made on request but a larger choice is needed in my opinion.

A real cinema, with a good ambiance, a tea room and bars. Human sized, good program and friendly staff make a difference to me. From independent films to blockbusters, you can enjoy your film in a nice place which doesn't look like these supermarket-like, mass-targeted places that I'm not fan of. I definitely recommend for spending a good time.

The Balwyn Cinema is make it look like a third world cinema, the owners are spending their money elsewhere on growing the cinema business but neglecting a prestigious building like the Balwyn Cinema. The new and old building stands out and is a real pity that it is is shabby when it could be the Paris end of Balwyn.

Although it's boutique, there are always a variety of films available that you can't find in the large mainstream cinemas. The choc tops are large (compared to the choc tops in other cinemas) and yummy. Staff members are friendly.

As Golden Club members we rec'd an offer of $10 tickets to One Fine Morning , from Thursday 8June onwards. Leticia at Palace Balwyn refused to sell tickets @$10, she insisted it was ONLY ONLINE offer. To promote attendance , sell empty seats, we get multiple emails. Then Manager refused 2 ticket sales! Horrible service to Golden who are loyal. Never going back!!Seniors

We have always loved this beautiful iconic cinema. However, our visit last evening very disappointing.. unfriendly staff at the bar.Our seats, as were as others checked, were dirty & many stains and the cinema itself smelled disgusting… the cleaning staff need to be replaced & front of house a big education session on customer experience..
