Beautiful day out at the Museum of Modern Art! Impromptu visit to see Sidney Nolan’s works that is currently exhibited. Friendly staff at counter made our visit delightful. Directions, a map and away we went! Had to check out the 15 acres of garden housing the sculptures, some of which are captured in my photos below. The lawn on a less warm day would have been lovely to lay on and read a book! There are oak trees in the garden that gives nice shade. Oh and check out the veggie and herb garden while there!

Dropped in today to see the exhibition of works by Sir Sidney Nolan (Search for Paradise) showing until June 2022. First visit and very impressed with the vast gardens and sculpture park.

Certainly a must visit for contemporary art lovers in Melbourne, also great place to stroll around, Staff are lovely and helpful in the museum, cafe and farm house - wherever we went. We saw the Sidney Nolan exhibition! Great architecture, sculptures, art and the surroundings :) It would have been great for the tourists if it was easier to access by public transport!

Beautiful place to visit with wonderful artwork throughout the property. The grounds are large and peppered with amazing sculptures. The history of the museum is very interesting and you get a feel as to what the original owners taste and mind must have been like. Lots of variety from traditional to modern styles. Would recommend spending about an hour and half or more depending on if you want to sit in the grounds.

Fantastic gallery in an amazing setting. Easy to spend all day here including a wander through the sculpture garden. Some great temporary exhibitions to reward repeat visits. The history of the property and the legendary artists who painted here is inspiring. Plenty of parking as well. Groovy cafe for lunch or bring a picnic.

Beautiful garden, vast place to have a picnic or a day out. Amazing art installations, abstract and quirky. The house that holds all the art collections got a history worth knowing. One of the largest private art collections you can find, that's on display for a nominal entry price. Could have enjoyed it further, if not for the Melbourne rains when I visited.

Great place to visit on a sunny day. Big park with sculpture. Food for picnic. Entrance to the park is free. Museum is good but very modern art. Guided tour of the old cottage was interesting.

Heide Museum of Modern Art in Bulleen is one of my favourite locations in Melbourne. A charming infusion of art, architecture and divine landscape, we absolutely love this space. With idealistic, romantic and picturesque scenery, the MOMA is the ultimate space to inspire awe for creatives. Love, Wild Romantic Photography

And verily, it came to be that Mary came across an inn but the inn was closed. A great wailing and gnashing of teeth fell upon the chosen when unto them a miracle was granted... and lo, the heavens ceased to weep, and the path to redemption appeared, and the café opened. An Easter miracle of biblical proportions. Awesome museum. Striking, thought provoking, inspirational even.

A beautiful few hours easily spent amongst the gorgeous grounds, exhibitions and the kitchen's interesting menu. Well worth a visit even if just to enjoy the free sculpture garden which is very large and a delight to explore especially on a sunny day.

Highly recommended! Worth to pay a visit if you haven't been! Love the indoor and outdoor settings, from art gallery, sculptures, landscape and architectural spaces. Outdoor and surrounding browsing is free, gallery is the only fee admission sction, but totally worth for its price as you would be able to visit the 3 different types of architectural buildings, from heritage to post modern then to contemporary. There is cafe, coffee kiosk opposite the shop available, but do check on their opening hours if you visit on the week day. Easy to spend a good quality of a few hours here. And best to be here when there is no rain so you could enjoy the outdoor a bit more. Facilities are good and clean, staff and volunteers are very friendly and helpful. A place where you would like to revisit.

My 3rd visit - to view Barbara Hepworth's current exhibition. This is small & you'd be done in under 40 mins incl. viewing a grainy doco that gives an insight into the landscape of Cornwall & surrounds that inspired her sculptures. The exhibits in the Heide II was the kind that you walk in & out again. As they say - art appreciation, especially modern art is in the eye of the beholder.... You will be fitted with a wrist band once you get your tix or show your pre-purchased tix. Need to keep this on to gain entry into Heide II & Reed's cottage which has more artwork by the bohemian arty circle that Heide is reknowned for. It was just too hot on the recent Sun to walk up to Reed cottage after Heide I & II. The vast surrounds which melds with adjacent Banksia park looked dull & uninspiring with the same old unchanging outdoor sculptures bar a few newer ones. Yes -it is the hottest & driest time of the year but surely with the kind of patronage & funding Heide receives, upkeep & maintenance should be constant... What's with the unsealed, dusty & inadequate car parking area esp. for the crowds that turn up on a Sunday? You can drive round to the 2nd level park & if this small space is full - turn right - all the way down to Banksia Park parking areas & hike uphill to get to Heide's main entrance. With Heide, there's this smug complacency to do nothing much to increase patronage. Be like NGV, McClleland Sculpture Park, PT Leo Sculpture Park or the wineries that incorporate outdoor artwork & sculptures - evolve, upscale & maintain please!

< Heide Museum of Modern Art > In a verdant forest garden, Heide Museum of Modern Art is very integrated into nature. Many contemporary artworks make people feel very modern and avant-garde, and they are inspiring masterpieces. Especially at the end of winter, when spring is approaching, and on sunny days, walking in the park and blending into nature is a very beautiful enjoyment.

I came to see the sculpture garden and had no idea there was a fantastic makers market there this weekend. They had fantastic stalls with really beautiful handmade items. I didn’t notice food trucks or coffee so had to visit the cafe. The service there was very very slow and a touch frigid. We sat in the covered courtyard and got eaten alive by mozzies. Very unpleasant. For some reason the inside area was empty, and they were only offering outdoor seating. They were very busy and there was a real bottleneck in this area. The sculpture garden was lovely but so much smaller than I remembered from 10 years ago. I kept doing laps thinking I must have missed a bit. I was very grateful for the abundance of free parking as it was very busy with the market and I secured a park very far away, but in nice bushland so it was a pleasant walk to the market from there.

There is two carparks one up at the top which is main entrance and also the lower carpark which you will find in the driveway just after you pass bridge street. There is a sculpture park and a beautiful heritage garden. Also the cottage at the top of the hill but you have to buy tickets to enter the three main buildings. There wasn’t much art in the bottom two galleries where you purchase tickets when we last went. The cottage was stunning with all the information on the history of the museum. Cafe was very busy all seats taken some people made bookings so they reserve up to half the place for bookings. Although There is plenty of seating available outside nice and covered. Beef burger was absolutely delicious! Friendly serving off fries too. Coffee was also delish!

A fascinating small museum, which has a very interesting story behind it. At the moment, there's a photography exhibition of American Lee Miller's photos for Vogue as well as WW2. Beautiful gardens, studded with scultures, a great café - really an excellent day out!

The gardens are absolutely beautiful, and worth coming just to walk around in nature and watch the birds. The artwork featured a small collection overall and would probably only be appreciated if you’re a fan of very contemporary art & photography.

We lucked out with an absolutely fantastic afternoon weather wise, so we could enjoy the gardens and of course seeing the wedding ceremony run under the huge oak tree. The staff are fantastic and attentive, you don’t have to wait long for the roaming food to get to you or for someone to appear and top your drink up. The reception was in Heidi Kitchen which is down the hill next to the Museum itself. A really nice little area tucked away so your group can have a little privacy, especially if there are other Heidi patrons exploring the grounds or the museum. Definitely recommend as a function venue or just a place to visit in Melbourne.

Beautiful gem of a park and an urban space nestled within the northern suburbs. The art exhibits definitely make this a great trip and the cafe serves a really good coffee! The staff are fantastic and very accommodating! Highly recommend going there even f it was for a takeaway coffee!

Always awesome, love seeing the three different internal galleries and sculpture park. My students were sad they didn't have any of the rooms in the 1960's building with furniture. Ha ha ha.... They have very high expectations. I love it as it is.

Always a delight to visit Heide. Great exhibitions, beautifully curated all stunningly scattered throughout the buildings and surrounds. Worth the visit every time. Cafe gets busy and staff can sometimes take a longtime to serve or attend to you but can overlook that when enjoying the visit so much! Ideal for a solo outing or equally as a family.

Such a beautiful place to spend your time. Went with my sister and nephew (1.5yo) and he had a lovely time exploring, lovely park area to wonder around in the grass and look at the gardens. The museum itself is great, very interesting with a cute shop. But the lunch!!! The restaurant is so delicious, make sure you book if you can coz it gets busy. The food was incredible and the service was great. Can’t wait to go back

The Barbara Hepworth exhibition is stunning, such a legendary sculpture artist. Also a real credit to the display designers 👏 Loved all of it. 😍 Well worth a visit & enjoy the beautiful park outside as well.. Give yourself plenty of time to find a car park, it's busy at certain times. Small kiosk was open while restaurant is under renovation. Or BYO outdoor picnic. Accessibility to main gallery is good, the outdoor sculptures not so, though many can be viewed at a distance.

Cool for a quick walk and gander at the sights by yourself or with a friend but as a family or larger group there are definitely more cost effective places to visit. If you’ve seen everything in melb then check it out but otherwise there are better (and cheaper) art spots around. This’ll occupy you for maybe an hour or hour and a half but it isn’t an all day activity. Overall interesting if not a little underwhelming.

  • 5/5 Jordan K. 4 months ago on Google
I’d been here before just to wander around the grounds, but this was the first time I took a full tour of the historic buildings and viewed the exhibits. It’s free for Manningham residents, but worth a paid visit for anyone who doesn’t live in the area. A lot of care has been taken to make sure that this blends in with the natural environment or adds to it, without being too jarring despite the modernness of the architecture and the sculptures.

A special destination that hosts interesting, sometimes provocative shows, and is a poignant reminder of Melbourne's strong art roots and identity. The external grounds, plantings and scattered art pieces are equally as alluring.

Beautiful galleries surrounded by expansive Heidi park and grounds. Bring a picnic rug and food as you'll want to make this a day trip -- there is lots to see, not just visual art! I love coming here just to soak up the tranquil sounds and sights of the Yarra river.

Although it's been a while since I have been to Heide it's always a unique experience. I enjoyed the Reed collection in Heide I, while my daughter was taken by Heide II, a true example of a modern Australian house even though it was built in the 60's. Was completed by a very good lunch, great quality for the price. Special mention to the sculpture walk which is always being added to.

Ventured to the cafe. Service = I was seen to immediately and staff were attentive throughout. Food = Chicken burger ($24) was a good size and there was actual chicken (unlike other places that use cheap processed stuff). Price was a bit excy but I knew beforehand. Ambience = Nice decor and places to sit outside. Main issue is that they should keep the door closed to keep out the flies from landing on the cutlery!!

Heide is an amazing place to visit; their exhibits are consistently eye-opening and very well presented and the staff are extremely helpful. The door price of $20 is a great deal when you consider it grants access to every exhibit they have on-site, so you can really spend several hours enjoying all there is to see. Add to this the great little cafe they have and the fantastic park grounds that contain many many more sculptures, it really makes for a fantastic way to spend a day, either alone or with a close one. Highly recommend it!

What a wonderful evening we had on Valentines Day at the Date Night at Heide. Bernadette our guide was excellent giving the history of John and Sunday Reed's involvement and the interesting stories of the artists who visited and lived there at the time! We had a lovely tour of the garden then enjoyed a delicious 3 course meal in the Gallery Cafe. Food plenty and wine flowed and conversations with strangers also easily flowed. A most enjoyable evening. Congratulations to all those behind the scenes and especially to Bernadette for providing a wonderful night. For us a belated 50th wedding anniversary celebration.
