Highly recommend visiting this place and doing the Watch house experience too. There was no wait to enter for us, 2 people. Basic entry to the gaol is $20 pp for adults, with the watch house guided tour it is $30 pp. You can't access the watch house by yourself, I think the 30 min guided tour on top of exploring the gaol yourself was worth it as it was quite different to what you saw in the gaol. It was very interesting to see how everything was operated, sometimes it was quite eery seeing some death masks and ropes that people have been hung with. There's a lot of information about Ned Kelly too. The gaol has 3 levels, you are able to go into cells on all floors with a lot of displayed objects and information plaques in most of them. What caught my eye the most was all the word/sentences carved into the doors and walls by the inmates including German war prisoners. Very interesting place and a heritage protected building, so be respectful.

The backbone of Melbourne & its history all explained and laid out for you to discover. The history and story's the Old Melbourne Gaol tells as you explore the cells and yards where the prisoners were kept. It's amazing. Sitting in a cell knowing that there were people kept there of very 150 years ago is amazing. The architecture of the 1845 building and the workmanship is astonishing. It's an excellent way to fill in a few hours while in Melbourne or ever just pop in for a quick squiz.

We enjoyed an informative tour around the exterior of the gaol and then wandered around inside. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. We were freezing within the confines of the cells, so goodness knows how prisoners survived winters. While several cells have prisoner stories within them, I am confident there is a vast archive where much more can be provided. As National Trust Members, the entrance fee is $0.00 😁.

It was a brilliant place to visit while on holidays in Melbourne. Some great authentic history that you can get up close with. Just cross your fingers a hoard of school children aren't let loose while you are there, had to wait for them to leave to take some nice photos.

The museum was very interesting and definitely something to see in Melbourne. The staff were really great, albeit the tours were a little challenging during COVID times. There's also activities for kids to do (Cluedo) which makes it interesting for them too. Given the influx of people at the start (timed entry) and the COVID-distancing rule, you'd have to wait until a cell was empty, unfortunately there simply wasn't enough time to read all the signs before having to move on to the other side.

The old Melbourne Gaol is a great place to experience Australian history. The detailed plaques in most cells have a personal insight and made it feel more real. I got the chills multiple times across cells covering three floors. Some dim lit cells and some cells with more light gave different vibes. Numerous etchings and messages left in the walls and doors added to the vibes - you'll just have to work through the disappointingly large amount of graffiti. Tour's were an option but queues were too large for us to bother with. A great outcome from a covid world so not really something to complain about. The sheer amount of children running around and screaming was a bit of a mood kill, but again not something to judge the Gaol on itself more just an FYI. It would be great to see more displays of relics or things from that time (given hangings were around until the 70s I'm sure more letters or other items would've been available to add to the stories and history.

We liked our visit to Melbourne Gaol. We spent an hour doing a self guided tour. The information in the cells is very interesting and informative. It was a great experience but it was ruined by the loud music next door. It was very annoying and distracting. We would have done the watchtower tour but the music put us off doing it.

Great museum, with lots of information. It is also pure Victorian architecture, which makes it kind of unique! I recommend to take the guided tour, because you get a lot more details on life in prison, Ned Kelly and how the prison worked from the guide!

This is a cool place to visit, a lot of history and stories across the jail cells. A lot of good artifacts. I gave it 3 stars because I didn’t think it was worth $30+ per adult ticket. It would have been cool if they had a light and sound show. If you do visit, don’t forget to download the application which is free and listen to the voice guide along the way.

Went for my second visit across 30 years. Both tours were good. I think I enjoyed it more today looking through more mature eyes. Really well run, cost is reasonable, informative. Staff friendly and approachable. Certainly worth a visit while you’re in Melbourne.

My visit to the Old Melbourne Gaol was a haunting and eye-opening experience. The dark corridors and cramped cells provided a stark reminder of the harsh conditions prisoners endured. Learning about the historic executions and infamous inmates left me with a deep appreciation for Australia's convict history. Highly recommend 💯

Not gonna lie, I kinda got dragged into this adventure but it turned out to be amazing. They get all 5 stars for how the tour is out on. It’s truly fascinating and on the guided parts, the guides are tremendous. You get an up close and personal look into the lives of those that stayed there and were executed there. Very informative and hands on. The Sheriffs have done an outstanding job of saving actual items important to its history and allowing you a peek into what it was like. Tip: look up Ned Kelly before you go, and learn about the most famous outlaw to be held on site.

Awesome experience and highly recommended, you have to be quite interested in the topic and fairly open minded, was good value for money overall. The guided tour was pretty good, learned quite a lot from that, the highlight of the day was without a doubt the watch house experience! I won’t spoil any details, just be open minded when going in. There’s also a play that you get to see as part of the entry fee and you also get to roam the Gaol at your own leisure and check out the individual cells etc, just a great experience and good day out. 4.5 out of 5! One slight criticism on the length of the tour, could have perhaps gone a tad longer and had a bit more detail.

I visited old Melbourne Gaol on Sunday. It was fun and informative. It would take you approximately 2 -3 hours to properly see it. By the way Ned Kelly's armour us a replica. The original one is stored in State Public Library of Victoria (just beside the Melbourne Gaol)

Great self tour, there’s an app that you can download and listen to as you do the tour yourself. Everyone was polite and friendly & the experience in the watchtower when we got locked up by Sargeant. Was an enjoyable fun experience?

interesting to see the history of the goal and take a look at the magistrate’s court! the tour of the court was fun and the guide did a really good job explaining the history of not just the goal and the court, but also the buildings surrounding the goal! lovely experience. a lot of things to read and see in the goal itself, so expect to stay for around 2h.

Very interesting visiting the Old Melbourne Gaol, we started with the escape artist tour around the outside of the building. Interesting to hear about how much it's changed over the years up til present day. Then we walked around the inside, there's a lot of reading to do but all with interesting stories. Children may get a little bored. I would recommend doing a tour if you want to learn a little more

The gaol provides an interesting historical perspective on the incarceration of many of Australia's more notorious characters. I've given three stars as the experience could be so much more interactive and immersive. Simply walking around cells reading stories from plaques on the walls feels very archaic when they're are so many different media options available and so much empty space. The exhibition of artefacts is the same. You can pay extra for 'experiences', I politely declined. Overall, it's quite disappointing for $35 a pop. I probably wouldn't feel so let down if tickets were half the price, I was baffled as to what merited such a high price.

Had a nice time. Most of the cells are open and they have quite a few stories of the people there. Second storey has stories of the women and children in the gaol which were haunting to read. Third storey was mostly filler, especially if you had studied history. Loved it though.

The Melbourne Gaol was a fascinating place to visit. Very interesting and full.of facts, we did the watch house tour and the Sargent she was really good in character and answered our questions. It's not fancy but a part of history, imagine what it was like in the 1800s and to think the last hanging was in the 60s!! CRAZY!! Staff were super helpful!!

In-close experience of what it is like to be in the prison, with walls showing background information about the treatment, WWII history, and all sorts of equipments used during treatments. The watchtower experience is worth a try as there are more type of cells, and the sergeant was friendly.

I had a good time learning history here. It's good you can do it at your own pace, as well as have the option of doing tours. There's lot of reading to cover, fascinating stories to read, and some articles to see. If you're a fan of Ned Kelly, this is a great place to visit. The jail is well preserved. I really enjoyed the interactive Watch House tour. That was fun and the guide really knew her stuff. Price wise, totally worth it.

I took my date on the ghost tour here, it was great! When you are in a group it's fine, but just make sure you do not need to goto the bathroom during this tour. The location of the toilet will leave you wondering around alone in a very dark and creepy place.

Was a very fun experience to go back to the Melbourne goal again after seeing as the last time was well before covid restrictions. A fun but somewhat limited experience considering all the changes that needed to be made so that tours could be run. Because of the restrictions things felt rushed, less interaction with staff and tour leaders, activities such as being invited to be an inmate can't be done and you have everything timed. Which is a real shame considering how good it really can be. *Cluedo is fun but you honestly you really need to only buy one booklet. As paying $5 each for a family of 6 for a tiny note pad seems pretty steep considering you can just share one book and work together. For the price it would have been nice for the kids to have a key chain, a pen or pencil. Recommended you either choose to play Cluedo or choose to take your time and read the plaques (which have the most educational value) as doing both under current restrictions means you don't have enough time. Overall still worth a visit but recommend to wait until covid restrictions ease and tours can operate as normal.

The staff were amazing. They had two events on during the day. One being a cluedo tour, which is a self-guided tour through the main cell block, whilst solving a mystery. The second was a group tour through the guard house, with guides. These tours were highly informational about the gaol, and the staff were very easy to talk to, whilst easily answering questions along the way. I recommend this place for those who love history and/or mystery.

It was a cool experience. I would have liked a proper professional tour but given the current climate I can understand why that isn't available. It's quite interesting being able to see things like torture masks and the hangman's box etc I'd have loved to see the women's part of the prision but thats all closed off. All in all it was pretty cool and the cluedo game was ok too.

The visit at the gaol was quite interesting, the tour was lovely and took just the right amount of time. The place wasn't too crowded and kids get to do a cute quest across the three floors. Especially recommended for anyone interested in history, architecture and the archaic Australian penal system ;-) We're looking fwd to the watch house experience which we missed today and rescheduled. Staff are lovely and helpful. P.s. The place would benefit from a bit of an uplift, maybe some videos demoing the exciting and dramatic events and procedures that took place when the place was active. There's ample UX opportunities that can amplify the experience.

I haven't been here since I was a kid. I was a bit disappointing that part of it was closed for renovations. Especially for the price. I remember it being huge. The escape tour was very informative and educational. The kids enjoyed locking each other in the cells. Give yourself about a few hours for this if you plan on going on the escape tour and reading everything in all the rooms.

found this tour to be rather repetitive and stories of various inmates very similar.we were allowed to roam around after the guided tour however for such a large place a basic cafe or kiosk would have been appreciated. Would suggest that it is slightly overpriced as well.

Very different but fun and interesting. Highlight was 30 or so minute tour where you and the other guests are prisoners and you get a slight feel of how things were. Also, the whole experience is as much about the prisoners that were there and their stories. Note, not really good for very young kids say under 10. A couple of them were very scared.

  • 4/5 M E. 4 years ago on Google
It's a good day out with a lot of stories and history to the city, they do a lock up experience where you get processed into the guard house but it's quite a quick thing. I would have preferred a guided tour talking about the kinds of people that came through the prison and more history around the prison. It's still worth a visit though.

This place is fantastic. It's $28 to get in but thoroughly recommend paying an extra $5 for the guided tour. You'll get so much more out of it. If you like your Ned Kelly history then you'll love it, he spent his last days here before being executed in this very building. So many other terrible tales of misery at this place. You also get free entry to the watchouse just down the street, where you get arrested and processed and locked up in a cell for a while. So much history there too. Best exhibit in Melbourne!!

Historic site providing context about those that were executed in Victoria as well as the death penalty itself. Also tells the story of Ned Kelly, whose armour was currently elsewhere (State Library across the road, free to visit, opening hours and visitor numbers allowing). The whole place can be done in 2 hours (reading all panels), but you currently only get just over an hour in the main building. Luckily we were allowed to spend longer as very few people were visiting.

Visited this prison back in January 2009 with my ex-girlfriend, and paid for our tickets early in the morning to enter this place. As I was taking photos of the prison cells I could see a small orb in one of my photos. We left the prison and then visited the courtroom where Ned Kelly was sentenced, and when the re-enactment had finished I took a photograph of the room. Then on my right side in front of a closed door there was a head of a spirit in profile looking towards my left side with no body with its mouth open, and a large orb behind a lady who was in front of me. Crown Melbourne also have these orbs either appearing near a column, or floating down the hall towards the shops. These spirits could only be seen on my photos. So when I remember my holiday in Melbourne I think about the supernatural.

Came for the night time experience of the Hangman's Night Tour. The guide was very well versed at suspense and acting as he goes through some of the stories of people's experiences there, and a few notably hanged there. It was a really great experience.

Great museum well worth it. Staff and tour guide make it very interesting and also there are some parts there with original graffiti from inmates. You can also go inside the original cells where prisoners were locked up in.

A great experience. Enjoyed learning about the life of prisoners and staff. Would have liked more time to tour all the cells and read the presented information.

The Cluedo experience was good. I thought we would have more of a guided tour of the gaol. We just walked around ourselves. Probably had something to do it with COVID restrictions but nevertheless it was a little underwhelming.

Fantastic experience, the building is preserved as it was, and really feels like stepping back in time. Gives a good history of prison life, and stories about the people who passed through there. Highly recommend.

Knowledgeable and well run private tours through the Old Melbourne Gaol and Old Magistrates Court. Would recommend if you are interested in Ned Kelly or Melbourne's history.

They have different tours which give different experiences and story telling. We went on a 1 hour ghost tour at night. Different

This is a great thing to do in Melb. The staff were fantastic and the opportunity to explore the gaol freely at your pace helped you absorb the information. Great for kids too as there is interactive opportunities.

We loved this place, was last here maybe 30 years ago and then as a kid. Creepy as ever but totally amazing. We did the watch house tour after, thought it was going to be corny but the guide was bloody amazing interacting with our family group. I cant remember her name but we were there 15/07/21. Recommend the extra tour just for the recent local history.

there were no prisoners in the gaol, waste of time this place was a great experience. would like to come back nearby. the exhibits were cool and creepy. super historical site. def come here.

Great experience that has lots of information for all ages. Cluedo game added some fun for the kids. Staff were helpful and knowledgeable. Young children might find references to hangings disturbing, with descriptions and displays showing how they would hang someone.

Important and heavy part of the Australian history. Worth a visit but not somewhere you can stay for long.

  • 1/5 Ian C. 2 years ago on Google
We booked through eventbrite for the Cluedo experience, but were unable to attend due to circumstances out of our control. The venue was quick to reinforce their no refund policy. We won’t waste any further money with this “attraction” Should have expected a gaol to be full of folks happy to take money for no value in return. Caveat Emptor

Went today and took part of the Cluedo Experience. I wasn't sure how they would be able to pull it off but they did well! Using QR codes and working out the clues was really intriguing and fun! Wasn't an activity that was over in 5 min, you really have to decipher the clues to figure out where the murder took place with the weapon and culprit. Had a lot of fun and was a great team building experience with friends. Highly recommend!

It is a very interesting place. Has an exhibition about people who passed through, including the notorious Ned Kelly, why they were there, how did they passed away, and some pseudo-science data collected after their deaths. The self guided audio tour app has great info, but it continuously crashed and had to restart the recordings more than once. The place has great potential from a historical and touristic perspective for more engaging activities.

Interesting historic museum close to the city centre of Melbourne, part of the RMIT campus. Most cells have informartion about former prisoners or information about the system

  • 5/5 Mark T. 1 year ago on Google
This is apart of Melbourne history that needs to be visited, we totally enjoyed it with staff making the visit a better time. We were going to do ghost tour as there's more to Gaol than we can see due to the Hanging's in the past.

  • 4/5 Mike D. 1 year ago on Google
Interesting place with lots of history - take the time to read the graffiti throughout, the best part in my opinion 😉 I just did the general admisssion and watch house tour but the evening tours sound interesting too. Reckon it's not the kinda place you'd want to be in on your own 👻

  • 5/5 Jason D. 1 year ago on Google
Amazing history in this place. The audio guide on the app is really great and tells a lot about the people who went through there. It is quite full on to see how small the cells were. I am not not that tall, but have to be careful not to hit my head on the doorways. I have also done the night time ghost tour and the watch house visit as well. I saw a lady take her son's photo in a cell while I was there. There was definitely the outline of someone else in the photo. No doubt about it. A really great place to visit in Melbourne if you enjoy history.

we went there to kill a bit of time.. a good piece of Melbourne history lots of interesting facts on people hanged at the goal ...POWs and guards. even hangmen ...and of course the most famous inmate Ned Kelly ...probably not on a young kids to do list but worth a look ... also a short walk to the state library where Ned Kelly's armour is held

Loved the tour. The history and stories told by the guide/sergeant were informative. Kind of an eerie feeling knowing the type of people housed here. Very historic place for Melbourne and a great way to spend a few hours.

Tours available every hour. You'll need about 1.5h if you do the Gail and the watch house. Both included in the one ticket. Was worth it. Very interesting :)

  • 4/5 Nana 1 year ago on Google
I really enjoyed! You can see a lot of history of this Geol. But unfortunately even if we booked experience activities in the watch house, the photo spot we’ve looking forward to was closed, I wanted to know before we booked!

Brilliant experience. Great for kids to learn the dark side of our history. Your ticket gains you a tour of the Magistrates Court next door, which has just as much historical info you can gain.

An epic look back into our not-so-distant past, the Old Melbourne Gaol is well preserved and well presented. You can wander through on your own or join a guided tour for an extra $5. Souvenirs and snacks were reasonably priced. Check out the hanging area.. it's not singposted but there is a rope hanging from a beam above. I asked a National Trust volunteer and he told me the history; there were 51 people hung there including women, and 11 more after the beam was transferred to Pentridge prison. It was eventually moved back in place in I think 2002? The place is scrupulously clean and you can go into and spend time in the cells on your own. A must for history lovers.

It's odd that the jail doesn't turn up when you search online for things to do in Melbourne, as it's a must see. It's kept really tidy and is within easy walking distance of central Melbourne. It could do with a few more exhibits and have more objects for visitors./ to toy with (who wouldn't mind trying on the ball and chain for size, as an example?). With this in mind, it' most suited to older kids and adults. This Pentonville style prison is immaculately preserved and it really pays to study the history laid out before you, as punishment through the ages is described very neatly. It's horrible to think that many inmates were executed in a spot now little more than a photo opportunity.

  • 5/5 Janice H. 8 months ago on Google
Located in CBD and easy to get to by train. Very interesting with cells having stories of the inmates on the walls. Included in the price was an external tour with stories of various escape attempts by the prisoners. The guide was very knowledgeable and tour was very entertaining.

A piece of Melbourne history. Be sure to visit on a weekday when it's a little quieter so you can enjoy the space to yourself. Be aware though, school groups do come on weekdays and can be a wee bit manic.

I recommend a visit to the Old Melbourne gaol when in Melbourne. The tour with expert commentary is quite interesting and educational with talks about various inmates the most famous of which is Ned Kelly. Jails were tough places then

If you like history, this is very interesting. You get a guided tour with interesting stories of inmates that reside in the jail as well as a self guided tour of the cells. There is a wealth of information in selected cells.

Not worth the money. Very expensive entrance ticket $35 just to see 1 prison block. We finished walking around in 30 mins or so. The Perth’s Fremantle prison was so much bigger and worth it. The old Melbourne goal is way too small as most of the building was torn down. Part of it is now part of RMIT university. Do not recommend to visit unless you have never been to a prison.

Definitely worth going to as a tourist. 100% recommend with a guide and they only cost $5 per person. The guide will provide so much more information and are genuinely passionate about the history.

I have been here heaps of times through my life so far and I will keep going back as it feels like there is still more to see and take in. It is a good place that shows you how things were back in the old days to try deter people from doing the wrong thing. I love my countries history.
