The old 50-metre tall shot tower is located centre-stage on Level Two inside Melbourne Central shopping mall, (on the floor above Melbourne Central Station). The heritage listed tower is encased in a 20-story glass cone, apparently the largest of its kind in the world, and it's fascinating that the Melbourne Central shopping centre was built around it, preserving the 1889-90 shot tower.

Good for a visit. Check out the clock when it chimes too... As you can see, it's all under cover.

I visited this place as part of the Melbourne Open House annual event that allows the publich to visit often locked buildings. Highly recommend you check this place out and get a good history lessons. Maybe I am just a history nerd, but I am always amazed... could you imagine what stories the building could tell having witnessed so many things around it. Go visit the museum. It's worth it.

The Shot Tower Museum isn't very large, but it hides a mysterious entrance within the R.M. Williams store. Inside, you'll find a detailed history of the tower and learn about the process of making lead shot. It may be compact, but it offers a fascinating glimpse into an interesting piece of history.

An really cute out of the way, almost feels secret, museum in the heart of a shopping centre. I love the way the tower is preserved inside a great glass atrium. The museum is small, tucked away inside an RM Williams store. You can walk in unharassed though. It has the story of the tower, the video wasn’t working the day I was there, but there is enough to make it worth the visit. You can see right up inside the tower as well (but not climb it).

Just a small collection of photos and captions describing history of the shot tower. Only really for history buffs or shot tower enthusiasts! Worth a quick look if your bored of shopping at the mall.

A fantastic museum. Excellent for both tourists and locals to learn more about Melbourne. It's not every day you see a shot tower in a shopping centre so this is really pretty cool and iconic! If you're a tourist go check it out. You'll love it.

A part of Melbourne and Victoria history now preserved but it's a shame that you aren't allowed to go up there anymore. The ground level is now a museum.

A fun little museum. Note the museum entrance is inside the RM Williams store, which is accessed from a small landing mid-escalator.

Visiting from New Zealand I went there looking for lunch and found the food hall crowded. Did not have lunch there but explored a interesting range of retail shops. Maybe the owners need to look at food court expansion options during peak times?

Love seeing this tower above as I enter the shopping centre from the escalators at the station below. Shame you can't climb the tower, but interesting little museum downstairs

Tiny museum that you have to go through the RM Williams store to see, but decent shopping centres attached to it

  • 3/5 Jovy G. 6 years ago on Google
It was okay for quick photographs. Just a little bit crowded as it is inside shopping center.

  • 4/5 Warren B. 4 years ago on Google
Not a really big museum, more like a RM Williams store with a room dedicated to the shot tower. With that being said it’s great to see them keep the historic old building functional and protected.

A very small museum that has some informative display. A nice stopover if you happen to be in Melbourne Central.

Now this is really something worth seeing when you're next in Melbourne. How they managed to incorporate the original shot tower structure within the newly built shopping centre is a work of genius! It makes for some fancy photo opportunities as well.

I walk past here once or twice a week but the Shot Tower is always covered top to bottom in movie adverts. I’m not talking small ads but the whole tower is covered in these ad’s. DO NOT VISIT YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED!!!

A beautiful historical tower in the middle of the shopping centre located at Melbourne Central. This is a must see for every visitor. Grab a coffee and enjoy the views. This area is crowded at times. However, there are some seats available for those who like to enjoy.

Entry via RM Williams shop. I read everything and was done in 10 mins. Not much to see. Disappointed that access to climb up the tower is denied and roped off. If you are a tourist, save your time in the day to see/do other things and go to this museum on the nights that it is open past regular business hours.

    旁边是电车站,坐电车上下下来很方便。对面是维多利亚图书馆。在Swanston Street 上。坐电梯一楼上去是美食广场,油炒饭,面条中式美食的丰富。楼下是卖衣服,百货鞋。

Really cool building within a the mall. Definitely worth a visit at least to see it from the outside. The museum is tiny but there are some fun facts. I had fun. Nice quick tourist spot

This Shot Tower stands tall at Melbourne Central and this year is draped in a Christmas theme - impressive. Sadly the Museum at its base seems like an afterthought - as it is small and hidden away in an RM Williams shop - a poor tribute to our history from the 1800s

    Quirky and very interesting

Small but interesting little museum enclosed within an Australian clothing store. Gives information about contemporary Melbourne history as well as a good idea into the shot-making process. Definitely worth a quick glance (15 mins) if you're nearby, also for the stunning glass enclosure.

A little underwhelming, considering the history and heritage of this place. In the midst of a very, very busy shopping mall and transport interchange - makes for good shopping and travel though.

Picture-worthy piece of history in the middle of a busy shopping centre and tranaportation hub.

There's a rather large food court with Western and Asian cuisine. Melbourne Central train station is right under it.
