Every time I shoot weddings here, the event will be very very precisely timed (due to the high quantity and timing of preceding and following weddings that all held on the same day). Another odd thing is that... everyone seems to be very sombre when they enter the building. Very quiet. Very grave and serious. Not sure why.

The facade is currently under restoration but you can still visit on regular opening hours. I loved reading the history of Melbourne and seeing accompanying old historic photos and illustrations. The massive replica nugget on display is a nice bonus too.

The Old Treasury Building in Melbourne is a historic landmark that is rich in history and well worth a visit. The building was impressive and well-preserved, with a lot of detail and intricate architecture. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable, providing a wealth of information about the history of the building and the city. However, I felt that we didn't have enough time to fully explore the building and take in all it has to offer. The building is also home to a museum and art gallery which are worth visiting, but we couldn't see everything in one visit. The Old Treasury Building is a great way to learn about the history of Melbourne and Australia. If you're interested in history and architecture, I would highly recommend visiting the Old Treasury Building, but allow enough time to fully explore the building and its exhibits.

A great museum, and think its exhibition varies in time. Building was well maintained and the overall heritage buildings and parks around here were greatly preserved.

My wife and I stumbled across this museum while on holiday in Melbourne today. This beautiful building is open to the public, at no charge, allowing visitors to walk through amazing displays of Melbourne from the late 1800s to the present. The vaults in the basement (where our gold was stored) are incredible. This building and museum have to be seen to be believed. I highly recommend a visit. You will spend an hour or more looking at all the displays, and it will cost you nothing! Pete.

Old Treasury Building is a beautiful 19th century building which was used to store all the gold from the gold rush era of Melbourne. Today you can learn about Melbourne’s history in the museum housed in this building with some exhibitions as well. Located next to the Treasury Gardens it is worth checking out if you are in Melbourne city.

The Celebrant was a tad arrogant. I will not name and shame but we asked for the long ceremony we got the short, we wanted our own vowls we got the short. In and out in 10 minutes for $450? Okay. Unreal

This free museum is an excellent visit! You'll learn about the gold trade (tell your kids it's about where the gold came after Sovereign Hill), and other interesting history displays. Awesome panorama of Melbourne then and now. The caretaker's apartment is on display too. Eight children raised in that tiny spot. And there's a display of Real Gold. I'm sure it was real. Anyway, check the opening days, they're a bit eccentric.

This place is amazing! Quite apart from the beautiful old building designed by a 19 year old, the museum blew me away. It is underrated and a hidden gem. We found it by accident during Open House Melbourne and was astonished by the depth and detail in the history that was display. I highly recommend every Victorian/Australian visit this place. There was so much information with photos, original documents (the executioner’s book!), news articles and personal stories. The people who put this together should be commended, they have done a fantastic job - it is up-to-date within the last few years. It is not publicised very well and the map location pin is not accurate for the entrance, but it’s a must see! I want to go back.

My fav place for sure. You could easily spend half a day here. Must visit the Gold Rush exhibition! And the history of Australian protests. I loved that there are lots of materials about women. The exhibition about women involvement in World War 2 is super interesting. The Lost Jobs exhibition is the one I came for and it didn't disappoint me. Coming back soon

Are you getting married here soon? For the last half a decade, I've photographed tons of wedding ceremony here and finally I'm leaving a google review! It's a true preservation of classic architecture, with stunning details here and there, from the grand staircase to the intricate moldings, every corner of this building is photo-worthy. It's the perfect backdrop for a classic, timeless wedding! There are a few different sized room so whether you're having a small, intimate wedding or a larger one, they can help make it happen! Oh, and let's not forget the building facade and the shadows cast by the structure around the stair / fence outside, these are yet another highlight and photo opportunity! Whether you're shooting during the day or in the evening, you'll find that the building's exterior and shadows cast by it adds a unique touch to your photo! If you wanna know more about some tips then hmu!

Had my two children married at Marriage Registry at the Old Treasury Building. Always charming structure with lots of teary memories followed by photo shooting at the Treasury Gardens. The building has decent facility for marriage ceremonies and staff are disciplined and nice. This marriage venue is only for intimate ceremonies only. Metered parking on the street otherwise there is a secure parking in each opposite directions which are 2 min walk to the Old Treasury Building.

The receptionist was very kind and entertaining. I do enjoy looking a little bit of history. The place looked very modest. I was expecting a lot about banknotes, coins but instead I saw things on lost jobs, women at war, and some old furniture. Overall it’s still quite nice

A beautiful building, well maintained and reflecting Melbourne's gold rush boom-time. Some great permanent and temporary exhibits sharing stories of Melbourne's growth and the gold rush. Check out the vaults while being entertained and educated. Great for kids too.

Informative and interesting tours of Melbourne's history circa 1850's and 1860's gold rush era. I still believe Batmania would have been a better name for Melbourne (after John Batman). 🦇

  • 5/5 Chris C. 2 years ago on Google
Really enjoyed this museum. Despite the name, most of the museum isn’t about the treasury itself but rather a history of Melbourne as a city. It took us about 2 hours in total to go round (reading everything). The current short opening hours are slightly annoying - including closing for lunch - which meant we had to return the next day to finish off.

I had an amazing experience here at the Old Treasury Building. The staff was friendly and the visit pleasant. Coming here was a great idea, I had the chance to learn more about the history of the city through illustrative panels and historical artifacts. I recommend to visit the place, and it’s 100% free!!

  • 5/5 Simon G. 6 years ago on Google
Great museum, especially considering that it's free. Helpful personnel greet you at the entrance and give you a quick explanation of the museum. There are 3 parts: the bushrangers, the foundation and history of Melbourne, and the basement vaults. A visit will take you anywhere between 30 min and 2h depending on how interested you are. There is a lot to read if you're interested!

  • 5/5 Benedict U. 4 years ago on Google
A really nice museum to look at the history of Melbourne. It has free entry with a donation. There are people at the entrance to greet you and see if you want a map and also gave a general idea of the museum layout. There are two levels with the first level about the History of the City and the lower level about the Golden history. The lower level was the housing for the caretakers and the old gold depository. There is actually quite a bit to see inside, particularly if you like reading about history. There was also a room full of beautiful paintings. I wasn't expecting much when I came but left quite happy with what I learned there.

Great place for a quick and still personalised wedding ceremony. Very beautiful rooms to make even the most simplest way of getting married feel elegant and special. Not to mention, afterwards, there are countless places for a beautiful wedding photo outside the building, as well as a nearby fountain. Lovely place.

Beautiful experience today at the Old Treasury Building. Friendly staff members who were very friendly and explained about the "Gold Rush" history before entry. Definitely worth visiting: they have 2 floors open at the moment. Interesting history, specifically about the "Gold Rush". Free entrance as well :)

A very good museum with the entire history of Melbourne on show. From. Lifestyle to people and economics. I found the panaromic photo of Melbourne in the early 1900 and 2012 very interesting. The see the change of the city after 100 years is very intriguing. The place is not crowded which is great.

Inside was a beautiful old building Outside left a bit to be desired. That I can get passed as building being renovated. But what I think could be done is a far more professional approach to their process! It definitely needs some polish!!

  • 5/5 Rowan B. 1 year ago on Google
A magnificent building which is a museum for different exhibitions. Free entry, open Sunday to Friday. Was the old Gold vault and pays tribute to this and many other Melbourne histories. For all ages and abilities. Has wheel chair access and is a quiet place. School groups do visit so perhaps call ahead to plan around their visit. Worth going back to every few months A topic for everyone's interest.

A stunning building and a real gem of Melbourne. I'm a wedding photographer and I photograph many weddings over the year where couples have their ceremony here, and then carry on the party elsewhere. Brilliant staff that are a dream to work with, and gorgeous heritage interior and unique exteriors that are a dream to duck out to for a quick wedding portrait session: not just the obvious locations, but also some of the beautiful little hidden spots. Can't wait to photograph more small weddings here as this becomes a bit more of the norm, and i'm excited for couples to discover this beaut building. Thanks team! Oli / Briars Atlas

I enjoyed finding out about the huge population increase of optimists and desparados when gold was discovered in Victoria, the tough sparse life on the goldfields, the strategic journey the Chinese took to reach the miners. Many of the older buildings in Melbourne grew out of this wealth and the Old Treasury Building built to secure the fortunes still seems sturdy and fit for the purpose. We spent more than an hour looking at the two exhibitions and learning about Melbourne's past.

Little but informative museum in the city, easily accessible by tram or take free ride on the city circle. Paid car park around the block. Ground level is mainly Melbourne’s history and main attraction is basement which includes gold vaults. Good for kids and best part is FREE ENTRY.

We had a small and intimate ceremony in the Margaret Craig Room at the end of 2019. It was the day the dust storm came through the city, pollen was everywhere and a 100 old tree just toppled over in the park next door. It still remained the best day so far, giving us an awesome photo opportunity in the park next door. It was well fitting considering my name... Its just the perfect place for a registry wedding as well. If you want to go smaller, theres the Thomas Hyde room, or if you want the bigger room, then the Margaret Craig room is for you. There's no dress code, no pressure and you don't have to spend an arm and a leg. NA LIA Weddings (Shardey) was our photographer, and she's done many registry wedding photos. Can 100% recommend her and recommend The Old Treasury!

Went there to bear witness of the wedding of a friend of mine.. A beautiful building and a very beautiful registry. I don't mind being the witness for weddings of people whom I don't even know now, just to visit the place again. The classic look, the decor inside and the conduct of the staff is amazing. The anxious couple were made calm almost too easily by the staff. After the function, the photos in and around the building were amazing as well. If U r a good photographer, then U can finish Ur bridal photoshoot at the building and the parks nearby..
