The Newport Railway Museum has a great range of significant pieces of Victorian history. All displays are static, yet some are open to walk through or climb up. Volunteers are eager and knowledgeable. There is an O-gauge model railway as well. When you learn what treasures were lost before the museum was established, it reinforces the need to support the preservation carried out by the museum.

Spent nearly 3 hours here on a hot Saturday afternoon. Our four year old grandson just did not want to leave. A great range of trains to view. Not all of them allow you to climb in, but there is still enough to do. My favourite was the Overlander, such a beautiful restored train. Great value for money

Well maintened museum and rich collection of locomotives. We visited on Saturday and one of the volunteers has given us a full lecture of a rail history, very informative.

A nice little display of Melbourne's train history from the 19-21 centuries. Spend a leisurely hour or two wandering around and within older trains that have been refurbished and restored and take in some history. While the guides are generally knowledgeable about their subjects and their areas of expertise, there is a lack of motivation and/or excitement. Still, a nice place to visit.

Lots of trains to see, but you are unable to go inside most. Would be great if there were tours of the trains to give a bit more information but the signs were still informative. Great for kids who like trains but be prepared not to be able to go on any of the trains. Entry was $10 per adult and our children under 2 was free

If you love trains, youโ€™ll enjoy this small, but packed, museum of lots of engines that were in use from the late 1800โ€™s to mid 1900โ€™s. Even have a small shed with a nice model railway inside. Every hour an employee puts on a demonstration of the model railway. Answers any questions while running a few engines towing cars. Nice setup

A comprehensive collection of historical steam / diesel engines etc. Welcoming volunteers when dropping off donated historical photos of a steam era derailment and VR staff clearing the tracks of wind blown sand most likely in the Mallee Region.

Too difficult to get to for any body handicapped or with walking difficulties. Signage from the nearest station was non existence so after getting withing several hundred metres, we decided that the challenges were too difficult. It is worth mentioning that i was following the Google navigator directions which do not direct you to North Williamstown station but rather the station before this and then attempts to direct you on foot to museum. Since i got off at the station as per instructions, i found that there were not signage directing people from this station to museum.. you assumption that people will get off at North Williamstown is in error and therefore any signage at that location is invalid. I repeat that i was on foot and as a pedestrian following instruction from Google.

Beautiful train museum and enjoyed experience, see old trains used to run in Melbourne. I remember some of these commuter trains. Recommend this place for out with kids. S/he can enjoy going inside the train carriage.

I have been here many times, but this was the first time since it is no longer under the control of ARHS (Vic) Div. A lot of work has been put into the place, with shelters being erected. I had a person show me the cabin of the old swing door carriage. He was very informative. I would recommend, although, if you're not too comfortable walking on gravel, this may not be for you.

Such a cool place. The locomotives stored there are such amazing machines! The staff was so helpful too, giving us tours of locomotive cabs and their controls! Definitely recommend going there.

Good collection, and they open various loco's and carriages throughout the day and announce it over the PA system as they open up which is handy. Volunteer staff are friendly and very knowledgeable.

I came here 20 odd years ago with my dad, and I checked it out because I was sick of taking the kids to science works, aquarium, zoo etc over and over... it was only $25 for a family of 5, and no parking fees or troubles. Plus you don't have to fight Melbourne traffic if you live in the western suburbs.

Took a school group to the museum for a tour. The volunteers were friendly, knowledgeable and were very happy to answer questions from the students. Good variety of trains on display and you are able to go inside some of the trains / carriages, which gives a better insight. If you children are into trains, would highly recommend a visit.

(Translated by Google) It is worth visiting the train museum. It has the oldest locomotive and old carriages in Australia, and you can learn about the history of Melbourne trains ... and for the whole family ...

I would love to see government pour a lot of money into this place. A railway museum has the potential to offer so much and this unfortunately looks like it's run out of money. Displays are tired and worn looking, plenty of rust around. This is part of our state's history and it all feels a little neglected. That said, I am so grateful to the work these volunteers put in to run and maintain this patch of history. Without the work of these organisations along with Steamrail, Seymour rail heritage centre and 707 operations our states rail history would have simply turned in to dog food tins and landfill.
