Although the buildings were made in the 1970s, they are all well looked after. The staff dressed up in that era and responded like they were still in the era made the experience realistic. I agreed with earlier comment that the comment from the diggers tour guide felt a bit political but she maybe doing what she was told to do and say. After reading someone else's comment about New York bakery, we went to Hope Bakery. Their pies and desserts were very nice. Their apple crumble was the best we had ever had. We decided to pay extra for the "Trapped" guides tour. We really enjoyed the experience going under ground as it made it felt realistic. The tour guide was the descendent of one of the victims and it made the tour felt extra special as he had the real connection to the story. The shops were also reasonably priced. The activities such as gold panning, bowling and candle decorating were also enjoyable. Lots of free demonstrations throughout the day, which made the whole day went by so fast. We really enjoyed our first experience at Sovereign Hill. Highly recommended for everyone.

Sovereign Hill was an amazing outdoor museum experience. It helped me to better understand the history of Australia and how gold played and important part. We were lucky 🍀 with the weather. It was amazing to walk through the big museum, trying to find gold with the kids. The staff members were all dressed in traditional clothing and they were all very welcoming and kind. We very much enjoyed the tour to the big gold nugget. Yet, the kids enjoyed also to see the animals and waking through the old houses 🏡. A fantastic weekend trip from Melbourne, definitely worth it.

Absolutely 💯 fantastic day out. It's such a wonderful place to go back into the past of Victoria and the Eureka era. Hats off, and congratulations to all the staff who make this day memorable for the visitors. You all do an amazing job in engaging us with your stories role-play and general knowledge and assistance. My husband laughed so much and it was truly amazing to see him enjoy the day.

Exciting life time experience of mines tour. Many educative demonstrations on wheel making. Horse cart rides. Gold pour experience is just amazing. Gold digging is fun though time consuming. March past of soldiers is exciting. Overall a must visit place for lot of fun for kids and educative tour for adults.

Spent the whole day here and didn't see everything. Excellent place full of period actors and reenactments. Great food, the chicken sandwich was delicious. The school teacher who also plays the coffee seller is lovely. The policeman is a proper funny character. The bars sell real beer. Just brilliant all round fun and entertainment.

It was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. It was truly a winter wonderland. It is a must. It's very different to going at other times of the year. Lots of things to do, most included with the entry. You are allowed to bring own food, but there are quite a few places to eat and drink. Pass outs allowed. There are fire places/ barrels scattered around so you can stand around warm your hands. There whole place had a beautiful old world feel and charm, with people walking around in old style clothes and always happy to pose for photos. The souvenir shops are quite reasonably priced too. I would definitely recommend coming here. Kids, no kids, just a group of friends, everyone will love this magical place

i haven't been back since i was 11yo and coming back with my kids was a treat. we enjoyed the mine tour, had to grab some hard boiled lollies, candle making was fun and despite being such a hot Summer's day; we had to try our luck and pan for gold. it was an enjoyable experience otherwise.👍

Definitely a very unique and must visit attraction. I believe this place is very popular as there are so many people and students when we visited on a weekday! There are so many shops to go into and the place is truly like in the movies. Staff are even dressed in theme and are happy to take pictures. There are also horses! All of the decor and architecture are on point I don’t even know if they are recreated or actual buildings. We really had a fun day exploring this attraction. I would recommend spending around 4-5 hours here. Parking is free too and there are lots of gift shops.

Great ‘live’ museum. It’d been decades since visiting and the place was still amazing. The atmosphere, staff, and service were great all throughout our visit. Costumes and the way staff greeted and spoke was very era-appropriate and like stepping back in time. Take your time when visiting. Plenty to see and do. It’s also a very large space to walk around. The morning opening time wasn’t overly busy, but it did get busy as the morning and afternoon went on. Very pleasant trip and experience altogether.

What an awesome experience to be able to revisit the incredible Gold rush history of the 1850s. There's a lot of interactive museum that allows you take part of the history from a self guided tour of the Red Hill mine to Gold panning. I really had a good time good panning, and have considered quitting my job and start doing it full time. 😆 🤣 😂 We took the train from Southern Cross Station and the trip was only 1.5hr and then took bus 21 to Sovereign Hill. Highly recommended to visit at least once as it brings back the nostalgic feeling of Old Sydney Town which I truly miss.

Lots of fun with many things to do and see. We loved finding some gold dust specks while panning and the kids loves the candle dipping at only $5 to do. The night show was amazing! We went with grandparents and children ages 4, 7 and 10. Only improvement would be better signage for toilets as we found them a bit hard to find quickly with little kids.

Entry ticket for adults is 39 It is completely worth it for the amazing experience. The way they represent whole village, those characteristics wondering around, the way they interact is excellent. Everything is managed and planned in such a amazing way. The history that this place carries during and of innovation. Story of The gold they found back in days. We went to random house there was a old lady doing her thing we had a chat . It reminded me as if i was having my time with granny it was emotional experience. This place is packed with old days memories . Really wort visiting.

There are some lovely people there. The acting was fantastic. There is lot of things to see and learn. You can make it a whole day adventure if you wear comfortable shoes. Make sure you start at least 10am. Because there some Events going on in each places so if you go on time then you can make it for all. They have charged 39$ per person but it’s worth it. But there are 3 interested things to do but you have to pay for them 8 each.( Horse ride, Tram Trip).

Sovereign Hill offers a captivating journey into Australia's gold rush era, earning a solid 5-star rating. The meticulously recreated town immerses visitors in the 1850s atmosphere, with period costumes, authentic buildings, and engaging demonstrations. The interactive experiences, from gold panning to coach rides, add excitement. The knowledgeable staff enrich the experience, providing historical context. A variety of shops and eateries ensure a well-rounded visit. Sovereign Hill truly brings history to life, making it a must-visit destination for both families and history enthusiasts.

Very fun and educational experience here - reenacting the life of gold miners in the 1800s. You’ve got plenty to do in a day - but can also pick and choose and spend 4 hours or so. We did come off season so there was no crowds or wait - but I assume it gets quite busy during school holidays. Highly recommended if you’re curious about the gold rush history of Australia - and even more so if there’s kids involved, there are a ton of fun activities.

Took our 9 yo granddaughter there yesterday. I can't recall going there as a kid but a great day and lots of things to keep the whole family entertained. Staff in period costumes were very obliging and outgoing. An excellent venue for young children to learn the areas roots and understanding of years gone by.

Great. Lots for kids of all ages to do. Well presented and engaging, very friendly staff. It is steep in places for those on wheels. My family spent 2 days here. Food is ordinary. We didn't even manage to get to the Gold Museum as Sovereign Hill had so much to do. Would highly recommend the Gold Pour, blacksmith and especially the wheelright demonstrations. All demos are suitable for all ages and well paced.

A really nice and fun experience, especially for families! Best to go during cloudy days. People with reduced mobility can take a ride around, but the number of slopes in the outer parts might make it difficult. Great deals daily in the shops within the town, wonderful things in the gift shop right outside.

Nice tourist destination. Well maintained as it should be. Good for a half day visit. Try to do it before noon. Reach by 0930hrs and you can come out max by 1330hrs. Note that washrooms are not situated closely and hence it may be a bit tiring to locate the closest one apart from the one that is present in the reception area. Guide is recommended as it may complicated to locate and complete all on time. There are show timings and you must plan accordingly. The Pure Gold Pour demonstration is not to be missed. Do buy a coin souvenir. The place is quite interesting and children will be fascinated for sure. Place is wheelchair friendly but few places need climb. The underground mine train also not to be missed.

We rang them to see if we are able to complete our holiday booking and on the phone they said yes but at the gate they told us that they have changed it on Thursday but the only thing they didn't inform us or email that could save my family alot of heart ache I find them lacking in information giving changing there mind and not letting people know until you arrive at the gates I find that very wrong upsetting for young children who was so happy and then they get sad

Visited on the second day of reopening with strict covid-19 precautions and procedures in place. Really impressed with the quality of this attraction from both historical and entertainment perspectives. Staff and volunteers were well trained in physical distancing measures and managed to stay in character as well as at a safe distance. Management should also be congratulated on their efforts as a great experience doesn't happen by accident. Loved it. Wouldn't hesitate to visit again.

My family and I went today on their first day reopening. We had a marvellous day. The staff and costumed people were fantastic. So helpful and loved how they stayed in their role Despite Covid19 impacting some exhibitions we spent 6 hours there and still didnt see everything. The play area by the lake was so beautiful. My kids loved the Red Coats parading, the stagecoach and the list goes on We will be back again. Thankyou for an amazing time

An awesome place. The artists are so cool that they will take you back to old age. Though we didn't live in that age, they give a clear picture on how life was there. You will forget that you are not in a modern world. You feel taking pictures of each and every place. Really loved the place. it may sound expensive for foreign nationals, but it is definitely worth visiting this Hill. Absolutely, you need to have a full day. You can use the ticket for 2 days anyways. Combo ticket for Museum as well as Hill. If you are planning your trip on a single day, spend 80% of your time in the hill and the rest in the museum.

We went there for their winter festival and the place was absolutely spectacular to day the least. Wow 🤩, we had a fabulous time. The staff were amazing all in their costumes and playing their roles, the lights were gorgeous, the candle dipping was so much fun, the kids loved it, everything was clean and well maintained. There was so much to do we ran out of time. We look forward to coming back soon.

A very unique experience. Lots happening from gold pouring to blacksmith to dresses to newspapers and candle pouring. Lots of souvenir options. Staff dressed in costumes and stories and acting makes it all such a wonderful experience to to walk through the alleys. Feels like you're walking through a piece of history. Staff are so lovely, friendly and easy to talk to. There is a small theater and photography booth where you can dress in Victorian costumes and have your photo taken too. Make sure you book a time for the photo ahead of time as it gets fully booked out. We missed our chance because we didn't know.

Haven't been to Sovereign Hill since the 70s. I still have my "Wanted Dead or Alive" poster. Panning for Gold after all these years is still so much fun. The family enjoyed the bakery and the candle making. Got scolded by a local for browsing the women's undergarment section of the department store. Haha. So much fun.

They even spray a hose for those not worried about getting wet. Lots to do and see. You can make it a whole day experience so make sure u wear comfy shoes, also charge up your phones.

I had a great experience spending the whole day here! I would suggest going before 10am, checking the program book, and planning ahead. You also need to book activities early (e.g., coach rides or photo studios), as they book out much earlier than the schedule indicates. The 45-minute mine tour was excellent! I chose the Trapped tour, which was both fascinating and heartbreaking. For a fuller experience, try talking to the actor staff. If you can, stay until 6-7pm to enjoy the night events with fake snow and beautiful lights.

A very nice place especially if you want to be grateful for how easy our life is and how granted we take even the little things we've in our day to day life. If you're not claustrophobic then I recommend you go down the full guided Gold Mine tour to humble yourself. Obviously you get to learn the culture and the roots. The New York Bakery burger was too good. Ps. Come here if you've at least 6-7 hours to spend, although I'd recommend a full day trip to this place is a must as it's not possible to examine in detail everything that's there.

Well, this would have to be my five visit across 40 years and I’m loving it as much as I did the first time. I saw things I didn’t notice the last few times and understood more information on a wide rand of topics. There were 900 children in the centre on one of the days we were there. They made the atmosphere so fabulous. Their energy and enthusiasm was great. Plenty of room for everyone too I might add. A very special mention to 2 workers there. Anna who was in the Ladies shop was very informative and shared her experience and knowledge. Anna was so welcoming and kind. What an asset she is to the centre!! Brett over making a leather piece for a horse’s harness was very pleasant to chat with and knew his stuff. A quiet achiever. Also, The Bank Manager was fun to speak to and the Blacksmith Timothy was great to watch. Please keep up the great work of telling the story, Sovereign Hill people. We will be back again on day.

This was a great experience! Sovereign Hill gives you a very good feeling for how it was in 1851, digging for gold in Ballarat. You can visit the old city, try panning for gold, see how it’s cast into ingots, see what living in a hut meant for the people and understand the pressure these people were under, just to survive! I recommend to spend at least half a day there, better a whole day. Especially if you0 are traveling with kids! And don‘t forget to get some Raspberry candy!

It is the best place to learn the history and experience the Australian gold rush in the past. There are a lot of activities that you can participate in to understand the work and life back in the date. It is better to spend half of the day here, ideally from the morning, check out programs and the schedules so that you can plan ahead time and route around the town. The staff is friendly and the facilities well maintained.

lovely way to experience the “living” history of sovereign hill and Melbourne’s gold rush! was an enriching experience going down into the mines, highly recommended. if you’re up for it, immerse yourself in the role of a visitor/investor in the gold rush too! staff dressed up and manning the shops was a nice touch, loved the vintage-vibes. good for children too! just beware the occasional dust storms.

Just across the road from Sovereign Hill and included in your entry fee. Very informative of the early years of the gold rush and has some wonderful displays. Not sure it suits children however great for the adults. There is also an opportunity to purchase some small gold nuggets and jewellery for the ladies. A very good couple of hours can be spent looking and reading about the early years.

An usual place to visit. The building is consider modern although it has been commissioned in the 1970s. A good place to understand the gold rush in Melbourne in 1850s. If you like the glittering of gold. Yes is a place where you see the shining replica. A good understanding of the early life of early miners. The ticket is part package deal that goes with Sovereign Hills. A complete history lesson that goes well.

The Gold Museum is conveniently located across Sovereign Hill in Ballarat and it is a museum dedicated to gold and the gold rush history in Australia. It also has collections about local life in the area. It is a one of a kind museum dedicated to one of the world's most precious resources. I had fun learning about gold in this place.

We booked the AURA Sound & Light Show and it was fantastic:). My teenage son was fully engaged throughout the entire time and no complaints or boredom moments. The money was well spent. We also had AURA Dinner prior the show, it was quick and perfect proportion for us. Highly recommended for older children as the show can be too long for under 12yrs children.

A brilliant living museum of the Victorian gold fields. Shops sell a variety of souvenirs themed or created using methods of the period, and tours of an actual gold mine provide a glimpse into life on the fields. Caters for school groups as well. Though there are ramps allowing for wheelchair access, much of the area is dirt roads so depending on weather could make moving around different areas difficult.

The weather wasn't the best when we visited but we were still able to see lots of the attractions and exhibits. Kids loved the gold panning, horse rides and getting dressed up for an old colonial photo. (Photo around $80.00) but well worth the price.

Extensive recreation town with live historic characters walking the street. We loved the coach road, and the pouring of a 3kg gold ingot at 900 deg C was superb. The Redhill mine tour was eerie in creating a sense of the perils of mining and my wife became obsessed after finding gold flakes. Apparently they drop real gold every month into the creek for visitors to find. Buy a small vial ahen you get your pan on entry for $1.

I arrived it was freezing cold and there were not enough maps, I had trouble finding what activities were open or closed and my two boys were crying and saying they wanted to leave! No one helped us find our way around and the New York Bakery did not let me in for a meal or coffee. The worst bit was panning for gold, there were no signs saying where to go and it was so confusing....then the queues were endless and you had to queue again for container to put gold i and although it was freezing cold, the container to pan with was cold, the shovel was cold, and there were no warnings about potential frostbite was given and my boys felt tingling in their fingers as did I and so we left without seeing anything after less than an hour. I know Sovereign Hill can do much better! We had a horrible time!!!!

Sovereign Hill is a great place to learn about the history of Australian life in the 1800s in an interactive way that exhibits replica buildings etc. of the time. Nevertheless, it is very pricy. There is an array of replica buildings, such as a theatre (with actual shows occurring there), school classroom, gold mine and some small cottages. The staff also dress to suit the theme, creating a living re-enactment of the era. Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, happy to answer any questions. The place is very expansive and there are bathrooms, cafes/cafeterias (which are not very good) and some specialty shops (eg. A pie shop, candy “factory”) and shows/paid experiences. There is plenty of parking and it is located on the outskirts of Ballarat, about a 2 hour drive from Melbourne. A gold Museum is located conveniently across the road and the pass you buy at Sovereign Hill allows you access to the museum too, definitely worth having a quick look. Definitely would insist on making your own way. Then there’s the pricing. It’s $54 per adult and $26 per child I think, but don’t quote me on that. It felt a bit expensive seeing that food was also a little bit pricy. So do bring your own food if you don’t want to spend too much. Overall, I think it’s worth visiting if you are interested in history, particularly about the gold rush. I just tagged along with family and wasn’t particularly enthused, but it was nonetheless an interesting and enjoyable way to learn about Australian history in greater depth.

We spent the whole day at this place and it was a wonderful experience. However, one full day is not enough to see the entire museum. Two day pass is my suggestion.

This is a living museum about the gold rush days. It is quite interesting and quite large as it is set up as a town with the camps/tents for the miners, a mine you can go down into and all the buildings have stores inside selling items that would have been made in them. This is a great way to spend a full day with family. We were visiting from Canada and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

An outstanding local attraction that helps us encourage family and friends to visit ! We have taken many family and visiting friends here over the years and it has always been a highlight for them. Although we have visited several times we always find something new that we had never noticed before, highly recommended.

Really quiet today due to lockdown/travel restrictions but a wonderful day out. The staff were helpful and friendly which added to our enjoyable experience. We got to do a lot of activities without waiting . The grandkids loved watching the lollies being made and then eating samples. We loved panning for gold, but sadly we didn't find enough to buy Hazel a peacock. (Lol)

I have loved this place since I was a child. It has grown since I was there last. My daughter took me to see the winter night lights and I have never been at night time. It was beautiful and it was like walking in a twinkling wonderland. Not only were my grandchildren in awe, I was too. Everything was so pretty. If you have never been I highly recommend you go as it really is worth seeing. My only complaint was the lines for anything as they were horrific and we went on the Saturday night. We did the whole museum and then found advertising for the diggings selling coffee and showing Santa 🎅,we never found either of those and we were there. Besides that we had a fantastic night. Highly recommended.

A real stunner of a historical experience! Loved my time exploring and getting a feel of Goldrush life. Everything was just so well done with the highlights were the mine, the opera house, hotel, and the overall townscape. History comes alive. Oh yes and the gold smelting demo was a amazing too, the blacksmith was amazing.

Sovereign Hill is a reconstructed mining town located in Ballarat, 1.5 hour drive from Melbourne, Victoria. Founded in 1850, you can explore the historic sites and the beauty of the Victorian architecture, and play a gold digger by trying your luck at the gold sand wash. This site offers you a full immersion in the life of the Australian pioneers: costumes, carriages, everything is there!

Well done Ballarat! This event was magical. From opening to closing the endless activities and access to good coffee and food makes a long day and night easy. We attended as a group of 9 people from two families and we all agreed this place is well done. Standout factor that makes it a "must do" are the staff. Hats off to you all, young and older were so helpful, friendly and professional. Thanks for an amazing time.

Picked a perfect day & night for the Winter wonderland - cool but no wind or rain Plenty to do during the day - candle dipping, watching how raspberry drops are made, ten pin bowling (old style) Gold panning ( found a few specks) visited the yummy bakery As evening came a wonderful light show began all through the park with thousands of fairy light and in the main street a moving picture show upon the buildings accompanied by artificial snow fall - it was magical!! Thumbs up to everyone at Sovereign Hill for a fantastic event

It's been around 15 years between visits and Sovereign Hill has not disappointed. I would say the experience and entertainment value is on par with Universal Studios in Singapore. The attractions are great, the actors are all excellent and the whole experience is highly educational. On top of that, you can pan for gold and actually find some of the stuff - though you won't make your fortune here! It's a shame the old boilers are no longer running (apparently due to emissions issues). Otherwise a five star experience and I would recommend staying at the Sovereign Hill hotel for a night to maximize your time - it's a full day trip. One other tip - book the mine tours early as they become extremely popular and book out later in the day (and are the highlight of the visit). Also, the sweets store becomes popular in the afternoon.

Post CoVID visit, even with reduced attractions and reduced performances by artists, the place is well worth a visit. Authentic things in shops, and street with miners, ladies, troops, law and gentleman doing some impromptu shows, often engaging with audience. Food at New York bakery was good too with some veg choices on offer. Lastly period photography was cherry on top. Alas, I tried to but could not mine out the Gold. May be next time

  • 5/5 Chris M. 2 years ago on Google
What a great way to spend the day! We learnt how to pour gold, make candles and hard boiled lollies. We were entertained by actors re-enacting scenes from days gone by, horse carriage rides and panning for gold. And best of all the kids got a tangible history lesson about the gold rush of the 1850's. The main streets are wheelchair accessible. There are a options for food and drinks. Would recommend hats and sunscreen for summer visits and if like us, you don't like big crowds, go outside of school holidays. Well worth the admission fee and would recommend everyone to visit.

Sovereign Hill will always be a very special place for me and my wife. We both visited it when we were children and coming back to it as adults brings us a so much nostalgia! 😁 This place is definitely a must to visited regardless of your age, there is plenty to do for both young and old. I highly recommend the scones in the teahouse! And you can't visit without stocking up at the candy shop!

Great experience for a decent price. The living museum is filled with knowledgeable characters and detailed exhibits. I had not been since over 20 years ago when I was in primary school and it still holds up. Gold panning is a delight as is the gold mine tours. Participated in the labrynth gold mine tour and for $8pp, this 45 min tour is well worth the experience. The bakery had a great choice of pies which include chicken, beef and mushroom, traditional and Sheppard's pie to name a few. The bakery also had many pastries and sweets, at which I got a wagon wheel, very delicious I highly recommend. Arrived at 11 and we could have spent another half day there I believe. I would much more recommend sovereign hill as a Victoria must see over simpler attractions like the aquarium or the zoo.

We were lucky and didn't have much of a crowd when we went. Got to explore it a lot easier. I have always wanted to go here and I was not disappointed. The staff were awesome all dressed up and very helpful. Great for everyone. My family and I loved it.

Loved the location of the hotel and its amenities. Wife and kids enjoyed a ton. If you're coming down as a family make sure you take colonial room and above. They're worth the price you would pay. The view from my balcony (yes you do get one) was amazing. Only downside is the lack of a restaurant in the premises but there are lots of eateries around so thay shouldn't be a problem. Would definitely want to come back.

Great family day out! Weather was perfect, plenty to see do and learn. The cafe was affordable and an ideal place to relax from a day of tours and activities next to the dam with the ducks! It is easy to miss but worth it as the food prices are a lot lower than the traditional style stores on the themed main street. Amenities were clean and suitable.

  • 4/5 Nic J. 1 year ago on Google
Great place to visit with both kids and adults. The gold panning was amazing & so addictive. The history of the place is so rich and all the workers there are so informative and really get into their characters. The roads however are very hilly and some areas are extremely uneven. Not the greatest for people with dodgy legs or walking disabilities, but do-able. I do remember there being more shows and things to do when I was there last time. Still a really great day out. The Aura night show was great too. Going to 3 different sections was a bit annoying though to watch light projections and there is no seating during the entire 2nd part, standing only. The story was good.

Winter wonderlights were fantastic. Lovely atmosphere and quite a magical feeling. Lights were spectacular! Only reason I have liked and not loved was due to the lack of staffing (especially the one poor girl in the sweet shop with huge queue!) Event is 5-7pm, there are a LOT of people,so staffing should have been better. Best time was after 6:30pm when so many people had left and it was easier to walk around a last time. Would definitely return!

Winter wonderlights is just wonderful Each shop has its own things going on, highly recommend the candle making shop and the boiled lolly shop! The playground is a must for young kids When the lights lit up at night, the place was magical, there were small fireworks around 6pm. Handy to know that there are pass outs available so can do little bits at a time to explore the place

  • 5/5 Chris A. 8 months ago on Google
We spent almost 6 hours here and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. The buildings, interior styling, rust and patina, the wheelwright demonstration, candy making demonstration, pantomime, staff in character, resident cat (Fergus), good food in main cafe (highly recommend the lamb stew and damper-yum), fake snow, etc. We absolutely loved it as did our 9 year old daughter. The key for us was to take our time and really notice the fine detail in everything. If you rush around, you'll miss a lot of the whole experience. Credit to Sovereign Hill for a fantastic experience. We'll be back next year to experience the night shows with all the lights.

We had a fantastic day at Sovereign Hill today. We took our 8 and 4 year olds and both loved it. We went on the diggings tour and to the musket demonstration. Both guides were amazing! The history and the way they engaged the crowd was great. My 8 year old loved learning about it. We panned for gold and found quite a few little specks. We bought the $1 bottles for the kids to take the gold home in. We went on the horse carriage ride, which was the highlight of the day for the 4 year old. We tried candle dipping and bowling. We visited the lolly shop. Our 8 year old did the self guided mine tour. Both kids attending a school lesson in the old school house. It was really fun for them to write with pen and ink. To eat, we had Devonshire tea in the New York Bakery and had sausage rolls from Hope bakery for lunch. We had another coffee at the new American Cafe while the kids played at the playground. My favourite shop was the old Apothecary. It is so fascinating seeing all the old medical and pharmaceutical equipment. Toilets and amenities were great. There are plenty of guides around to help if you need it or to just have a chat about the history. We would most definitely visit again when the kids are older to see which activities they enjoy at different ages.

As a family group we would recommend on arrival to do the mine experience and gold searching first, then work your way down the street. The dressed characters are good once you interact with them. Eat on the main street, it seems to be better food and atmosphere is great. Most extra activities are not included in your entry fee. Plenty of souvenirs to pick up if so desired. Enjoy your visit

Spent a wonderful 4 hours here. One of the highlights of my Australia trip. A wonderful place to visit. There are lots to try and see and there’s demonstrations and talk all around at different hours. There are a few attractions that requires a fee but it’s definitely a place worth visiting. Would definitely visit again if I’m in area again

Make no mistake Winter Wonderland is magical! My advice judge your timing, if I had my time again, well I'd have understood the crowds would be there the last weekend, but this didn't damper the experience. Crowds= Hectic and you are left to your own devices which I'm not sure is the best management system but hey you're there for the experience not traffic management 😉

  • 5/5 Tash M. 8 months ago on Google
Fun & Interesting for all ages. The kids loved being immersed in a world that wasn’t there’s, they learnt a lot but also thoroughly enjoyed being able to interact with the gold panning, dressed up “town folk”, the old style stores, underground mine tours and go by inside the buildings to see how people lived in this time. We found plenty options to eat, and very happy that this consisted of a few price ranges - bakery, cafes etc. also thought it was fab that there were options to buy souvenirs in a range of price options as well as items that were actually useful at home. We arrived at 10am and followed the guidance of the map as to what areas to be in at what time and didn’t leave till 5pm

We recently took a cousin here that was visiting from Norway. He enjoyed it. It's nice, just seems much the same as it was when I was child. Not much has changed, not sure why I feel it has shrunk from last time I was there 5 years ago. It's a staple to take your overseas guests that love gold, history or the cowboy outback. I also enjoyed remembering the history of Ballarat, and watching the gold pour. The gentleman was funny and very knowledgeable, loved that he spoke of the history before the pouring too. There is a great cafe to buy lunch, coffee, drinks and also large outdoor areas for BYO. The coffee and fries were good. You can't leave without visiting the lolly shop. The lollies are a must, miss seeing how they are made. Sour grape, coca cola and strawberries and cream were yum! Maybe I've hidden them from the family 🤣😋

Great place to enjoy some history and pan for gold. Recommend wear comfy clothes if panning for gold and sneakers for the long walks. The staff were friendly and answered all of our questions. We visited on a very rainy weekend day, and crowding was not an issue. Bring your own snacks, as some of the food was a bit expensive. There are water stations (that look like wine barrels) located along the area. Great trinkets and small gifts are available throughout the exhibits.

Must visit attractions if you're interested in mining. Especially into Gold. Make sure to take the tours. Some are free and some have to pre-book and pay. There is a guided tour with a tram into earth. Plenty of kids attractions. Restaurants and rest rooms are available. Horse cart riding is also popular. And you can do your own mining.
