One of the coolest FREE art galleries I have ever been to. Huge fan of the giant red room of paintings. It was glorious. Really loved this place. The information desk gentleman was also so patient and competent. He suggested starting at the top floor with contemporary art and moving downstairs as things get more ancient. I was a huge fan of the queer artists feature they had at the top floor. There was an amazing dance video with shiny curtains and the whole choreography was played backwards symbolizing how regressive our society is. Although I do identify as queer, anyone can appreciate how empowering it is to bring to light the struggles and voices of queer artists. Anyways, my favorite floor was the European painting floor. THE SHEEP SURROUNDED BY CROWS. Brilliant. I love art.

Melbourne’s another Just Wow! Experience Wouldn't want any of a better experience. Great service wonderful artwork and the culture in this place is very strong. Great place to explore the 3 levels in the Gallery and amazing place for a day out with the fam. If you want to be able to see everything it isn't a 5 minute job so make sure you have plenty of time to come here. But would not expect nothing more. It's got a nice food place on the ground floor prices are average but still isn't cheap like some places. Got some great Photos while I was there. Most recommended

Amazing, amazing place. Lovers of art should definitely make a trip down when in Melbourne. I actually liked that there was a good variety of art, and not just paintings. With free entry (tickets needed only for special exhibitions) there is really no reason not to come- it is the best way to spend the day alone.

Huge museum with lots to see. Free cloaking service at the entrance. Went for the Picasso exhibition. Simply amazing. There were some free exhibitions too on the upper floors. End up spending a good 3-4 hours here. The staff at the counter are really friendly and helpful.

If you love art, you'll want to visit this place regularly. It's the place to be for any art enthusiast. Every few months there's new exhibitions and installations, both free and paid. The building itself is a marvel with huge fountains and a large waterfall wall at the front. The garden usually hosts a free major installation and is a beautiful space to relax in. Plenty of rooms and variety to observe, discuss and contemplate. Hope it continues to receive the funds that make a lot of it free to the public!

We went to the museum because we wanted to enjoy our night outside. The place was nice we couldn’t imagine we were at the museum. They made good use of the outdoor space by offering a small pink “swimming pool” with a sculpture in the center. Everyone, old and young, was in the pool to cool off. The atmosphere was very nice. You can order drink or food but they aren’t cheap. You can go for the aperitive with your friends , sit on the garden and enjoy the place and the music. The DJ is at the entrance of the museum but you can listen to his music in the garden because there are the speakers.

I love this place! The permanent collections are great and get changed up, so definitely worth a visit if you are on the city. The absolute highlight are the exhibitions which I recommend you visit if the subject matter appeals. Tickets are only around $30/ person and they are phenomenal!! Large but well spaced, all exhibits explained with background and it's the famous works. Depending on your appetite to go in depth and enjoy the displays, it's easily a great 2 to 3 hours

Love being a member here. It’s one of the first places we take interstate and overseas visitors. Some tips if you have never been- - Make sure you visit the kids section on the lower level. It’s a fun space. - if you can, visit at night like when they open on Friday nights. It is a different experience. - walk through to the gardens at the back. - currently, Tonka is providing service in the back restaurant, please book in advance and eat there. It’s amazing.

I like it very much. The beautiful paintings and art of Australian artists are really spectacular. I enjoyed the environment very much. Highly recommended for those who like to get familiar with art of aboriginals and signs used in their crafts and paintings. The staff are friendly and helpful. You can get there easily by tram or train…enjoy it!

This venue boasts an exquisite array of collections, featuring captivating artworks and sculptures from different culture that are visually enchanting. The added charm of a serene garden at the back provides a delightful spot for relaxation. One could easily spend a good couple of hours exploring all the treasures on display. National Gallery of Melbourne is a must visit place if you like artworks and sculptures from different cultures around the world. The building is amazing, well organised, and has ample seating areas. Many classical paintings and sculptures of famous artists are on display in multiple galleries. There are cafes inside the gallery for drinks and food and a serene garden at the back for relaxation. It is a wonderful place to spend a couple of hours within the city life.

Amazing! It’s a combination between art from this century and art from some centuries ago, it’s just amazing, you can spend hours going around in the different sections. Staff is super polite and helpful I would visit this museum every day of my life if I could. Simply amazing.

The Galleria is amazing !! You can spend almost 3 hours over here or more if you have. But it is a good to visit with family/Friends. There is a free general admission but still a lot of interesting things to see. This is one of the must go if you're visiting in Melbourne. Beautiful Botanical garden, Federation Square, Chinatown...all within 15min walking distance

We went in expecting it to be your usual museum with vast galleries and paintings but it is very big and has 3-4 floors filled with exhibitions, art, modern and contemporary exhibits. You could easily spend 3-4 hours here and possibly more if you like their exhibits. When we were there, 3 floors of the exhibitions were free and there was a special floor for channel which requires admission fee.

Relaxing Sunday afternoon wandering through the collections. Great atmosphere, well designed - even the transition between different floors was smooth. So good it's free entry, bags can be left at the cloakroom. Spent about 2 hours exploring and still have more to see for a future visit.

I'm especially fond of the overall artistic atmosphere at the NGV. The museum is moderately sized, making it comfortable to explore without feeling exhausted. Moreover, all the exhibitions are very interesting, immersing visitors in a world of art, truly a delightful journey for the soul. After viewing each exhibit, I love to stroll in the garden behind it. It's definitely worth a visit during leisure time.

Came here for Triennial in the afternoon and it wasn’t packed which is lovely as you can explore freely. Amaze on how clean and easy to navigate each exhibition. Awesome show called Afrocentric and nice acoustic sound in the wide open space. Lots of interesting modern and famous art works on display. Lots of people coming when we left. Best to come around 3:00-4:00pm if you want lesser people around.

A lot of things to see here for any art taste. Access is free which makes it a must visit place when in Melbourne. The galleries are very well organized and very interesting. Because the access was free, I visited three times and each time I discovered new things. The proximity to Federation Square and other Melbourne attractions makes it so easy to find and explore. Highly recommended place to visit!

The NGV holds one of the most significant collections of art in Australia. As a space, it is inspired, incredibly democratic for all and it's curation, world class. Triennial is definitely one of the best exhibitions but any major exhibition is worth the entry fee.

  • 5/5 D P R. 3 years ago on Google
Very high quality free entry standing exhibitions and a phenomenal legacy built due in large part to the Felton Bequest made 120 years ago. The gallery was able to aquire some of the worlds great artworks in Europe in the ealry 1900's, that in todays markets would be virtually impossible to accumulate. I've enjoyed many special exhibirions and the NGV team work hard to bring the best of the art world to Melbourne, though you do feel the profit motive in the way folks are sometimes crammed in to the exhibitions. Overall, first class gallery up there with the best in the world.

NGV is one of the most iconic things you can do in Melbourne, and it’s free! They always have a rotating free exhibition which allows you to keep coming back for new experiences. Recently, they created their own pink lake for you to dip your feet in. A great summer activity for families especially! I’ve included some pictures of their paid Chanel exhibition, which is definitely well worth the money. You’ll always get something out of paid exhibitions even if you’re not interested in the topic.

A fantastic place to take shelter & step into other worlds & other times. The outdoor area at the rear was packed with happy kids splashing around in the pink water on a summer’s day. We meandered through the galleries, from first century pottery to British & European works & then mid century to modern works.

The national gallery of Victoria is one of Melbourne’s go to location for both locals and international visitors. There are multiple floors to visit and unwind in. Great place for people of all ages. Most exhibits are free although many of the paid exhibits are worth attending too. Would highly recommend doing some background reading on the pieces of art before coming here.

The NGV has such a great range of art from throughout history. One day is well worth it, but if you are like me you will want to come back many times. As it is difficult to fit the whole gallery into one visit, I suggest starting with the exhibit you most want to see and moving from there. And don't forget the mezzanine.

The National Gallery of Victoria is hands down one of the most stunning art galleries we've ever been to. It's a treasure trove of art, spanning from ancient masterpieces to cutting-edge modern works. You'll find everything from breathtaking paintings to mesmerizing sculptures and even intricate jewelry. They really cater to all artistic tastes and preferences. Now, let's talk about the Alexander McQueen exhibition. Wow! It left us completely amazed. Being big fans of his work, we were beyond impressed. It's a must-see for anyone who appreciates his incredible talent and innovation. What's even better is that they offer free tours nearly every hour, if my memory serves me right. The guides are incredibly passionate about what they do, and their enthusiasm is contagious. They truly bring the art to life and make the whole experience even more memorable. If you find yourself in Melbourne, you absolutely can't miss out on visiting the National Gallery of Victoria. No excuses. It's an art lover's paradise that you won't want to leave.

This place is a Melbourne institution - definitely worth a visit! We were here for the winter masterpieces but we come down every other month. 🎭🎨🖌️🖼️✍️ A CREATIVE AND INSIGHTFUL EXPERIENCE NGV is an absolute must visit for tourists and locals alike - we came here for the Up Down and All Around exhibition which was mainly for kids but we as adults had heaps of fun. The sushi train exhibit is very life like and forces your creativity to turn everyday objects into furniture. NGV have a myriad of other exhibits (some free and some paid) which are absolutely worth checking out. Can’t wait to come back to visit their other exhibits!

This place is kinda my one-year worth of viewing art collection. At first it was like a world tour because I got to see a glimpse of Japan, China, Korea, India and Thailand on one floor. Then on the other floors, I got to see a wide range of different art collections. It was a nice experience to see how this kind of artworks were preserved and appreciated over time.

A wonderful place to visit. Filled to the brim with amazing art in all its form. The building is amazing in itself. It is incredibly well presented. It is easy to stop to absorb or reflect on your surroundings and artwork, there is ample seating around to do this if required. I highly recommend a visit either general admission or for any exhibition event.

Came here for the last day of Triennial (well the live performance last day). Was so lovely to hear live music playing in the foyer on arrival. Really nice acoustic sound in the wide open space. Lots of interesting modern and famous art works on display. Lots of people out enjoying their Sunday afternoon basking in the wonderful works from both local and international collections. I really enjoyed the digital art. Some very confronting violent art. Decent coffee in the cafe near the gift shop.

Ever changing, national treasure of a museum. Free for all to admire and learn about art. Light channels all through the building gives you some great photography challenges. Cafe is expensive as expected, prepare to walk a lot. Bags are easily stored away safely at front desk, hang on well to your bag card.

Without question the best museum in Australia, and I've been to prestigious museums overseas that don't come close to the WOW factor of the NGV works & staging. We are very lucky to have it in Melbourne. A must visit for everyone.

Preview of NGV Triennial Exhibition was excellent. Some stunning artworks; imaginative, often thought provoking. Difficult to take in, in a short visit as there is so much to see. I really loved the way in which many contemporary pieces have been incorporated amongst what would be perceived as traditional art pieces and yet 'fit' so effortlessly. It speaks of wit, understanding and intelligence in the selection and placement of these new artworks, a marriage, if you like, of old & new. Will be returning to explore further. Free entry.

Dude, the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is like an art party you don't want to miss! 🎉🖼️ They've got everything from classy old-school art to mind-blowing modern stuff. It's basically a trip through time and creativity. Plus, the place has this chill vibe – perfect for strolling around and pretending you're in your own artsy movie. If you're up for a rad time surrounded by cool visuals, hit up the NGV. It's like a museum, but cooler. 😎

National Gallery of Victoria is a fantastic place to visit for free for arts, ancient sculptures, scriptures, cultures, heritage, books and many more. It has beautiful collections of preservation of ancient arts and cultures. I visited with my partner here a month ago and even though we are not a big fan of art, we thoroughly enjoyed visiting this place.

Enjoyed the most a porcelain collection from the UK dated 17-18 century, collection of Venetian glass from 15-17 cent. It was interesting to have a look at exhibition of furniture and outfit from early XX cent. Temporary exhibition of fashion collection of Japanese designers was a new experience for me. Place is nice, worth to visit especially with free admission but don’t expect anything close to European collections and museums. You will need around 2-2,5 h of slow strolling along the gallery halls and reading all the descriptions. Go and for sure you will learn something new!

More of a Instagram worthy sort of visit, a bit of history, but the atmosphere of the tourist is concerning. There were kids touching the exhibits, adults sleeping in odd places. A general lack of respect for others in the vicinity, would certainly suggest visits in quitter moments. A better experience in quieter times, but generally it is quite crowded with high tourism activity, so rare chances to really immerse in the exhibits.

A world class gallery. Definitely Australia’s best with a very nicely curated collection that changes 2-4 times per year. Good interactive environment as well as holiday activities for kids and big kids to keep themselves occupied. Currently showing parts Pablo Picasso’s collection, including his works and his days compatriots and colleagues. Amazing

A great place to visit. Everyone loved touching the water window and getting a little wet. I visited the Rembrandt exhibit, which was interesting. The gallery is easy to get around. The free exhibits are better than expected. One of my favourite places to visit regardless of your age or budget. There is something for everyone, and the stained glass ceiling is free for everyone to enjoy. The winter master exhibitions are a great draw card to attract visitors during the colder months and there’s plenty of space to park and lock up your push bike. Visiting the gallery is a great day out for a solo explorer or a nice change for a family outing.

"Captivating Art Collection and Inspiring Atmosphere’’ My visit to the NGV in Victoria was nothing short of mesmerizing. The diverse and extensive art collection left me in awe, showcasing a wide range of artistic styles and periods. The museum's commitment to fostering creativity is evident in its thoughtfully curated exhibits. The atmosphere is both serene and inspiring, making it a perfect escape into the world of art. My only minor critique would be to enhance the signage for a smoother navigation experience. Overall, a fantastic cultural gem deserving of a solid 4.5 stars!"

One of the places I truly miss since moving away from Melbourne last year. A truly fine Art Gallery. Just the building itself is awesome with the Great Hall a sight to see, and the water wall at the entrance. With regular exhibitions and an awesome permanent collection it really is a must see when in Melbourne. Obviously at the current time one cannot visit, but once you can definately get this on the cards. For those in Melbs, stay strong and you'll be back to this wonderful spot soon. Kia kaha. ✌️??

Awesome gallery, staff are super friendly and the space is beautiful. Highly recommend getting a beer in the Garden Restaurant which is a bit fancy but we just sat out in the garden which was lovely. We came from Brisbane to see the Kaws show. Really well structured just a shame the larger sculptures were limited but probably due to space. Otherwise very cool installation including the kids area at the end which is great for both kids and adults - at least we had a lot of fun. Easily became one of my favourite galleries in the world just from this visit.

Really good, interesting and well curated exhibitions. Neat little cafe. Good parking space. Beautiful location which backs onto park land which goes down to a shady and exotic walk in botanical gardens with seating available. You can also take a path through from gardens to a Chinese temple precinct if desired.

World class art gallery. Constantly changing exhibitions from around the world as well as showcasing the best of Australian classic and contemporary art. Just across the river from the city of Melbourne. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and the riverside precinct which is full of great dining and wining if the food at the galleries own restaurant or Cafe wasn't satisfying enough for you.

I enjoyed my trip to the museum. There was lots to look at we hardly got to it all. It was a little hard to move about the museum though. Not much direction and you seem to be going back and forth to get to different areas. Needs a better flow I guess. Still very cool and the kids enjoyed it.

  • 5/5 Graeme M. 4 years ago on Google
Really enjoy exploring the gallery and seeing the new exhibits. Although some exhibits you have to pay to enter, most of the facility is free. The staff are always helpful if you are polite and the food is lovely at the general restaurant on the ground floor. They also cater for children in the gallery exhibits. There's a few interactive kids-oriented exhibits each time we go and our 6 year old really enjoys spending a few hours here. The food here is generally very good (and priced accordingly) but bear in mind the menu isn't aimed at kids but there are some options so if you have a picky eater, you may struggle here.

We had such fun at the summer festival especially the disco! The children enjoyed their time learning new dancing moves and paper crafts. I was busy with the kids and didn't take many photos, it was an exciting day for us all. The staff were so nice and welcoming as well. Keep up the good work!

What a great facility for Melbourne. Huge display spaces and a fantastic collection of exhibits on show. Originals by Hockney and Rembrandt which you can get really close to & see the fine details. A stunning lamp by Fabergé and many more interesting exhibits. Plus the wall of water and the kaleidoscope roof and it's free to get in. A must do when visiting Melbourne.

The gallery is very well located and the modern architecture of the building is quite interesting. I joined the free guided tour, which lasted for about 1 hr and half. Absolutely worth it! We were taken from one area to another and alongside the description of the art pieces, there was also parts of the museum story that were coming up. The cafe area was relaxing and there was also a free charging point with cables for any type of phone (it might seem a bit very interesting detail, but I found it extremely useful since I forgot to charge mine and without that power charge I would have been left without city map!).

The name is deceiving, the National Gallery of Victoria is more than a "gallery", it is full of treasures and antiques from across the world. While paintings and artwork remains the core focus, it feels more like a museum. Visitors should allow plenty of time, one can easily spend a whole day there. Entry is free.

First off, this gallery is free to the public. It has a lovely outdoor sculpture garden with seating so you can relax and enjoy the setting. The must see exhibit in the gallery is the largest stained glass ceiling in the world! Unbelievable to see it in person. The galleries have a range of exhibits which are well signed. There are also at least three eating areas depending on what you want. We ate at the Museum Cafe and the food and service was quick and delicious. It is also across the street from the Botanical Gardens and on the tram lines although it is one stop beyond the free tram zone but from Federation Square (last stop in the free tram zone) it is a short walk across the bridge.

(Translated by Google) When I went there happened to be an exhibition in cooperation with MoMA, so I waited a few days before visiting. I have to say that people in this city are really interested in art, and there was a long queue on that day. I mainly visited MoMA exhibits, and I was fortunate enough to see some famous works in the history of art. I was satisfied. For the free exhibition area, I feel that the exhibits are a bit inadequate, and the NGV Australia Pavilion on the other side of the square has more appetite for me.

From outside the building is a bit of a monstrosity. However, the collection is good and worth seeing, especially the galleries devoted to Aboriginal art. We had lunch in one of the café’s situated on the second floor. The salmon sandwich was absolutely memorable. It was fresh and tasty and the service was excellent. They also serve fresh orange juice. It was just a pity that we were short of time and had to leave. Would definitely go back to the museum and have lunch there again. The gift shop is also very good, with a range of items ranging from the contemporary to Aboriginal art. I bought my wife a scarf with an Aboriginal design and we did not see such a pretty one during the remaining four weeks of our trip around Australia.

I love all art galleries, as they all have their own individual and unique quirks. The best part is that entry is free. Tonkas restaurant is impressive with a 5 course summer luncheon and dinner menu, $65- $85 per head. The table service is fabulous and I was treated like a Queen of the day. I love the outdoor gallery and seating area on a sunny summers day. The live entertainment is a real treat. Early to mid week is the best time to visit. Tickets are easily accessible online, so do book in advance. Although, people do rock up with out prebooking and had no trouble getting a free ticket from the ticket booth.

Went during the Triennial festival and enjoyed the whole experience. Directions were pretty clear. Not many cues. Not too crowded as well. Assistance by the staff was commendable. Would definitely prefer water fountains or some sort of water supply as all the walking can be dehydrating but it's not that important. Cheers. Loved the whole experience overall. Looking forward to coming again!!

Triennial was first class. Many of the exhibitions have been made more contemporary/modernised keeping the interest of the kids (and adults) for many hours. The Lune experience a nice touch.

Had not been for a very, very long time and enjoyed it. It was packed however, even during Covid times. Difficult to keep the 1.5m rule in place. The art work range was quite impressive and even got to see Picasso's Weeping Woman! Was not very child friendly. My child was bored until we went out to the garden and were able to use the climbing facilities. Besides a Japanese children's exhibit/room, there wasn't that much to keep children interested and I think they need more exhibits for children. Food as expected was expensive in the internal cafe. I would enjoy returning on my own to be able to take my time and truly appreciate the art.

My mum and I visited the National Gallery of Victoria for the Triennial exhibition on a Friday morning. We had booked our free tickets online, so the whole process of arriving, checking in with the QR for contact tracing, and scanning our tickets was seamless and efficient. The exhibition itself was fantastic, and I loved all the different sections and displays. As the official NGV website describes, it definitely does 'offer a visually arresting and thought-provoking view of the world at this time'. Thank you so much for the enjoyable experience!

Honestly, it's been years since I've visited the NGV... I'm talking teenager. Was on a staycation in the city with my beautiful wife... We thought, what the heck... Completed online booking and never turned back... OMG the TRIENNIAL was magnificent. I'm passionate about history... It felt I was going through a museum... artefacts from the Egyptian period, 13/14th century, Regency (for fans of Bridgerton..haha)... Furniture, landscapes, portraiture, religious icons to contemporary art... Remember, you need to take your time... At least 4 hours to fully appreciate it... Don't miss out... GO!

Enjoyable visit which included viewing the excellent Triennial exhibition. We enjoyed a light fresh lunch in the tea rooms. Only negative was that despite the rule that "Facemasks are Compulsory" many visitors ignored the directive and staff took no action whatsoever. Very disappointing and worrisome considering Melbourne has a current Covid outbreak.

A jewel of Melbourne. Great free permanent exhibitions, and seasonal international exhibitions. Very inclusive space. The garden out the back is highly underrated; but no one forgets the iconic water-wall entrance. Now with a kids space too! However, only one lift in the gallery space.

Have visited the NVG a couple of times and am always impressed with the exhibits. I visited a couple of months ago to see the Triennial exhibition, as well as a refresher of the entire gallery. Was very impressed with the stunning and mesmerising displays, as well as interactive activities which are fun for all ages. If you visit all floors of the gallery, you’ll spend a good two hours getting lost in the beautiful artworks and displays.

This gallery contains an exceptional collection of fine Australian works and a varied collection of international works, check out the Mark Rothko on the upper floor. We saw the exquisite French impressionist exhibition from the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Such a wonderful display. Take your time at this gallery. It's worth the meander. And they also hold an original Hokusai print, the Giant Wave, it's not on display, but you should ask when it will be. Altogether a dream like place to wander slowly.

The National Gallery is well worth the visit but be sure you have at least a couple of hours to walk around and admire. Open 10 - 5 every day, there are at least 3 levels to explore. The Gallery gives you the chance to respectfully view pieces of art that are of significant cultural and historical value. The skill of some of the older works is particularly breathtaking and masterful.

An amazing place for people of any age. I went to the current children's exhibition by Daniel Emma and although the lines were a little long for my 4 year old, he certainly had a blast immersing himself in the experience and participating in creating art himself. We navigated the expanse that is the NGV easily and appreciated the many escalators (and the elevator) to get from floor to floor. The outside pieces were phenomenal to experience in the flesh, particularly The Temple of Boom with its vibrant colours and intricate details. Highly recommend for an outing an day of the week, with or without kids! Oops, nearly forgot my son's absolute favourite part, the water wall at the entrance, was a favourite of mine at his age too.

Escalator and elevator access, along with a gift shop and a cafe. Great for all kinds of people but do stop by and have a look at all the beautiful art of the NGV. There’s a section for children on the Ground Floor which is lots of fun.
