Where else would you go to watch the biggest movie releases but the biggest screen in the world. Never fails to amaze me seeing a movie here - and I was involved in the grand opening back in 1998. 24 years on and its still the best cinema experience I've had. The screen is amazing, and the sound is the perfect level to make you feel like you're immersed in the movie. Premium seats are nice, but you aren't missing anything really by having standard seating.

πŸ“½πŸΏ Not so long ago, this IMAX held the title for the world's biggest screen, which one must see to believe! Although number 2 now, this place is a visual feast for movie lovers, documentary fans, to name a few. Located in the same compound as the Melbourne Museum, this screen is gigantic, literally. The 3D movies here are definitely some of the best. The audio is marvellous, the picture quality is the BEST! Having watched a couple of movies here, sometimes I find it hard to go back to other theatres. Ranging from the insane 3D of Avatar 2 to the 1570 mm version of Oppenheimer, this place delivers heaps, and then some. It's no wonder that rhe tickets for highly anticipated movies sell out so quickly! The candy bar is fine, with a bunch of soft drunks and popcorns to choose from. Being a Big League Member (BLM) for just $10 a year is a great deal, which becomes apparent while booking tickets. Also, in case of concerns or queries, they're very quick in their responses. For students, there's a lower ticket price, which is fantastic. There are free documentaries for BLMs sometimes. Watching an IMAX movie is an experience in itself, and seeing it on this immense, immersive screen is priceless.

Large IMAX with a lot of film selection. The canvas is nice and big. The choice of space is good, but the legroom is not quite optimal either. But the 3D glasses were very bad here. They had been used quite a bit and were very wobbly and in my opinion were very dated. They still had narrow lenses and were very difficult to use for people who wear glasses. Also because they couldn't be put on properly. Therefore, the long-term view was not good.

I have been to IMAX Melbourne a handful of times, but leaving my review based on my experience last night. I went to the Avatar release and the staff where absolutely amazing! Everyone was so cheerful and it just makes the experience so much better. The cinema is great! Can’t go wrong with 3D IMAX. But a standout is how accommodating they are. I was a bit of a pain and ordered a coffee at 1:20am after the movie and not a single complaint. Helped keep me awake and was the cherry on top of a great night!

Enjoyed the IMAX experience in Premium. Found the seats at the back too close to those in front though, so couldn't make much use of the leg rest, which was a shame. The width of the seat was also a bit tight for a premium experience.

Great for watching 3D movies. The big popcorn seems to have gotten smaller since last year. Supposedly every seat is great but in row F it still felt like we should be further back to get the best experience. Sound and 'boom' is good. On a hot day it was a bit chilly in shorts and sandals. Could do with more toilets (all genders).

I had an incredible experience at IMAX Melbourne! The giant screen and sound quality were truly breathtaking. The immersive visuals and powerful audio made me feel like I was part of the movie. The only thing to keep in mind is that the first few rows might strain your neck, so opt for seats a bit further back for the perfect cinematic experience. Overall, a fantastic place for movie enthusiasts!

One of the best cinema theatre. The 4 starts because of the shop. Every time have to ask what is in the fridge and how much is it. Very uncomfortable, especially when a huge queues just before show starts. There are only a few items and they can make a proper display to make ordering process much faster.

Great place to visit and watch a great movie on the biggest screen in the world. My only gripe is that they need to have more bins in the waiting area. I had to really look for it. I think it will be a good idea to place one at the stairs before you walk down stairs for the entrance to the cinema to throw items away before walking in.

I've been here four times, and each time I'm amazed by the cinematography and extremely high video definition. The cinema is top notch and the venue is licensed if you'd like to share a wine or beer with your film friend.

Big sound, big screen, big vibes. The best place in Melbourne to experience the latest (or often older) blockbusters. Fly in and see what all the buzz is about.

Saw DUNE on the big screen!! Wow! What a fantastic experience. We will be back for more movies here. We didn’t do gold class but had a good look and it looks good, very comfortable reclining chairs.

Always love going to the IMAX! It's great if you live seeing movies on a bit screen and even more so if you love 3D movies. I find that the seats there are quite comfortable and the rows are staggered enough so that you don't normally have people in your view too much. The image and sound quality is really good and it's a great experience. The staff are also quite friendly to. There is also a pretty decent selection of documentaries to and they are normally I think less than an hour long so it's great to fill in gaps if you're travelling.

Great experience, seats were a bit closely packed with little leg room. Not so comfortable seats for long sessions but was good for $22 tickets with museum membership.

If you are a movie lover, this is the place to be. I always drive 30 minutes to there just to have best of the best movie experience. Members get free ticket after 6 movies so money well spent to join the membership! So far I’ve watched at least 30 movies there.

Great experience, overall! Screen is mighty big, staff were nice (although couldn't get anyone at the end to validate parking, but the dude on the machine "help needed" button understood and applied the parking discount). Good range of food (although almost all the slushie machines were dead bar one or two Coke, so zero mixes for me!). Screen was clean, seats were comfy, overall really good experience, but a few wee moments where it coulda been lightly improved for me to call it a 5.

My friends and I came here to watch "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Avatar: The Way of Water" in 3D. The screen is huge and the 3D visuals are great. When we came to see Spider-Man, there were many hardcore fans dressed up in Marvel character costumes, which was heaps of fun to see! Cons are there is little leg room space and the seats are lined a long row with no aisles breaking them up. This means when people enter late, it is a struggle for them to get through many legs, and they end up disrupting the movie for many people.

The screen and sound system are incredible. The seats badly need upgrading. They're too narrow. Also; the seat numbers are in a strange (unlit) space. Friendly service at the snack bar, but my popcorn was not warm enough.

Seat G20,21 are mid section , they are good , also L23,24 or good those are second last row before the premium seats, much higher but also good seats - just one thing, DONT EXPECT cinema to be clean, it was dirty ! , as you can see in one of the pictures. But sound and quality unbeatable.

came all the way from sydney to see this imax & wow it reminded me of the old Sydney one. Loved this imax just purely for it's smell and oldness that it holds. it reminded me of an old cinema from my childhood days. the smell of popcorn, the excitement to see a movie and 3D glasses! this imax beats the new sydney one by heaps. The 4K laser projectors are amazing too and the quality is noticeable. the screen is amazing and the sound is so good

Love the imax and we're members but....I used to think it was rude to bring my own food to the cinema. Paying $52 for 2 sub standard hamburgers during a movie marathon, I'll be bringing my own food in future.

Very uncomfortable small/cramped chairs like an 80's cinema. Absolutely unacceptable for the price. Victoria gardens Hoyts extreme screen costs less than half and is 10x more comfortable. Seriously, what the hell??

Travel and adventure memories of the ocean and time colliding with asteroids. Planes turning into painting and people becoming characters of the mind and the body. A story meets science and than science meets a story. The choices you make echo into a lifetime of becoming and stitches of so far into deep aspects of storytelling. Hopes and wounds and clarity of mind.

I don't know I feel it's very dated compared with other cinemas in terms of the technology in offer for video and sound. The 3d glasses weren't cleaned properly. We watched an under water 3d documentary which was good but I wasn't wowed by the picture quality or sound. Quite disappointing. Won't be going back.

Screen and sound are excellent and I enjoyed my movie. However the seats are terribly configured, small with no ability to recline and no aisles. If you need to go to the bathroom during the movie it is a nightmare squeezing passed people or having them do the same to you. For the prices they charge, you expect better. They should refresh the seats.

Took the kids & saw the Arctic doco in 3D. Well worth the price & 45mins is a perfect length for the young ones. Good day out with the museum too & very affordable

THIS is how movies should be experienced. Went here to watch Oppenheimer, Godzilla Minus One (twice), and Blade Runner 2049. The IMAX experience is definitely worth the premium price and it differs greatly from the normal cinema experiences that Village and Hoyts offer. The curved cinema seating works as your neck won't become sore from turning your head toward the screen like in normal cinema screens. The sound and picture is breathtaking especially for blockbusters like Oppenheimer. Here's a tip, come to IMAX on Tuesdays for discounted tickets. On top of that, BIG LEAGUE membership is an affordable yearly membership and is 100% worth it if you come here often.

I will never watch a movie any where but here again. Comfort. Magnitude. Magnificence. Excellent parking. Superb movie choices. Value! Get a membership. And it's proximal to Lygon Street. Correct.

Great cinema going experience (Saw the IMAX re-release of jaws) staff were friendly and helped me find where to go as I have only been once or twice before. Venue was clean and the chairs were comfy. Great experience 9/10

imax screen and sound system is the best you can get. tickets are expensive but worth it. you can choose your seats, the seats are standard and comfortable for a 3 hour movie. candy bar has frozen coke, choc tops, popcorn and other treats.

The best place to see movies. Period. Whether you're there to see something presented in glorious 15/70mm film or 4K laser, it is by far the best place to experience a film. Even if the film isn't IMAX formatted, this is always my go to venue.

  • 5/5 Carly J. 1 year ago on Google
Seats are comfy and have a surprisingly spacious feeling for a cinema. Screen and sound is awesome, obviously. Toilets were clean. Candy bar staff were nice. Easy to get in and out of the foyer. Parking is cheap if you pre-book.

  • 5/5 Vicki H. 2 years ago on Google
Nice central location which is easily accessible via all transport options. Lots of bike parks and nicely lit at night. Great audience as people who attend the IMAX are usually big fans of the movie.

  • 5/5 Hasmit P. 2 years ago on Google
I am Very much satisfied with the cinema. The screen is that massive that it doesn't feel like I am not watching movie, instead I am in the movie. The facilities, snacks and comfortable seats add glory to the cinema. I would love to visit here successively.

A great way of watching a movie. Definitely recommend it. The movie watching experience never disappoints me. We watched Tenet recently as we know that this movie must be watched only in imax to enjoy every moment of the movie. Oh gosh. Trust me such a fantabulous experience.

I'm a big fan of IMAX Melbourne. Housing one of the few 1570 IMAX film projectors, the crew take great pride in their work. Over 3 years I've been here for multiple screenings and have always been wowed by how the staff enthusiastically go above and beyond. Cancellations and even minor hitches if they ever happen are handled with the customer in mind. Love their work and have great respect for them!

Good quality feature films but expensive for a family. 3D glasses were blurry around edges (worn) and snacks are overpriced (large popcorn is small)

  • 5/5 Geoff D. 2 years ago on Google
Favourite place to see a movie in Melbourne as its the only true imax screen here. tickets can be expensive if you just buy on a whim but these are my top three tips: 1) sign upto their big league membership you can then get discounted tickets 2) keep an eye on their Facebook for when showings go on sale as for popular movies tickets fo quick, again if your a big league member you also get first access to tickets 3) use the code IMAX and prebook your parking, if your seeing a movie at night and prebook it only ends up costing about $5 (as at time of this review)

  • 5/5 Sebastien R. 2 years ago on Google
IMAX screen is amazing!! Sat on far left of row H and would not want to be too much closer to the front. Seats are fairly squishy, shuffling and standing needed to access middle seats in the row, definitely minimise toilet breaks and snack runs

  • 5/5 Stefan B. 2 years ago on Google
Loved it, IMAX is always better but 3D with Mr Bond was killer. Best seats in the house are situated right in the middle, definitely recommend getting in 15 mins early as there is a queue to check your tickets as well as get popcorn from the candy bar. Overall, a great experience and definitely hope that they upgrade their seats to recliners in future as Hoyts does in their Xtremescreens πŸ˜ƒ

Recently i have visited for Avatar 2 and loved the experience and the imax presentation. I have been to other movies too but not all of them are imax presentation. Its worth watching if its imax presentation only.

I saw β€˜Dune’ at the IMAX. The volume was so loud my ears were ringing and my head hurt. The screen was so big I couldn’t see the full picture and was unable to see the screen peripherals during the movie. Some people may prefer it this way. I just got a terrible head ache.

  • 4/5 David P. 1 year ago on Google
Excellent service. I made the mistake of coming to a screening the wrong day and the staff were more than happy to assist me in transferring my tickets for a different movie that night. While I was there, I bought tickets for the movie I came to see and the manager on duty gave me a Big League Member card to save me from reciting my phone number repeatedly. Very good customer service. I recommend. And you already know the screens are amazing.

The cinema theater is just wow. It is the best theater I have visited so far. It is neat and huge.. seatings are great in term of space and overall it is neat. Extraordinary experience! I fully recommend this place.

Great viewing experience while Sydney is closed. Staff seemed a little worn down but that doesn’t surprise me as it was the opening weekend of Avatar. Food was average but paying for the premium seats was worth it especially for 3 hours.

  • 1/5 Sam P. 1 month ago on Google β€’ 1 review New
Sorry first the experience to book the ticket on the website is sooo not user friendly - When you try to change the seating and also the only method of payment is by PayPal account. And then the non-premium seats are the least comfortable that one can ever experience hence took away the enjoyment of watching a movie. Stiff neck and shoulder for days. My next booking is for Premium seating and will see how that goes. Also wayyy too costly for the less than average service
