Historic and attractive indoor arcade of shops and cafes. I had a fine mug of Aussie style cappuccino and enjoyed the ambiance of the Arcade corridor. It reminded me of another historic shopping/cafe arcade in Brussels that we enjoy.

One of the few remaining reminders of Melbourne's architecture from another time. Take a walk down this arcade is like stepping back a hundred and fifty years in time.

Beautiful architecture and lovely vibes as you walk through the ecclectic group of shops in this, Melbourne's oldest shopping arcade. Visited by tourists and locals alike, check out the old Gaunt clock and the statues of Gog and Magog, before grabbing a hot chocolate or purchasing something from the gorgeous gift shops.

Feel very happy everytime entering this pretty arcade. The classic historic building with black n white floor pattern is elegant. Many stores n cafes inside. We can go through this arcade from Bourke street mall to Little collins street and then go through the block arcade nearby to Collins street.

The Royal Arcade has always been one of my favourite arcades in Melbourne. It was also the first arcade in Melbourne. “Its historical significance is profound and underpinned by the fact that, as a significant Victorian era building, it is part of the Victorian Heritage Register. The beauty of the Royal Arcade is it remains largely unchanged today, yet its Renaissance Revival style is in pristine condition.” (quoted from the their website) I find the filtered light and gentle buzz of visitors endearing. The architecture is unique and a fine example of Melbourne 100 years ago. It’s just a shame that there are so many shops available for lease. Clearly Covid has hit the arcade hard. But some of the old timers are still holding in there and keeping their doors open. This arcade holds many memories for me, visiting with my grandma and feeling we were “special” because the shops were “so fancy”. These days I walk the arcade with nostalgia and hope that it’ll return to its days of glory.

Historic arcade, worth taking a walk through. Look out for Gog and Magog, unique statues that have been in the arcade since 1892.

  • 5/5 PETER N. 1 year ago on Google
Absolutely charm ,beautiful and historical. When you walk here, you are actually walking in the time tunnel, spend most of your time here and enjoy the architectural art of the 18th century because these hours are not counted among your life.

The history of this arcade is amazing. It's a historical gem, and the architecture is second to none! It's lined with beautiful, boutique coffee shops, jewellery brokers, designer clothing, and more. Have fun in awe of the buildings beauty, or marvel at it's history. Either way, it's an experience visiting the arcade. Enjoy!!! 😊

It has a great architecture and there are cute stores and cafes over there such as KoKo Black, Café E Torta & Paper Republic.

  • 3/5 Dommi M. 6 months ago on Google
There were some delays with the coffee orders, and there was no space to place jackets. The rounded edges of the chairs and the reduced space made my clothes fall over and over again when the waiters or any person walked past (it's a tiny space inside and it wasn't very comfortable). Overall, it's a great spot for coffee and a chat with an original ambience.

Every Australian city has one of these arcades, namely one that happens to be incredibly fancy, and rather charming as well. As it turns out this is Melbourne's offering, though in fact it isn't the only one that Melbourne has to offer. It isn't all that large, but there are certainly some interesting shops inside, as well as some rather nice statues, including Gog and Magog, a pair that I have always enjoyed looking at since I first discovered it.

4.5 stars If you like that “old charming vintage” style you’ll go crazy here I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. If you’re more of a “modern orderly clean cut” aesthetic you might not like it and feel as though you’re stuck in a boring museum for old people. It has quite an old creepy feeling if you ask me, but I wouldn’t recommend coming here going out of your way. It’s really nothing that special. I do recommend it if you want to take pictures of Victoria era aesthetic places. Other than that there’s really nothing to see.

Malls are not my favourite place to be at but this one had everything I need. Located near a bus stop. It was reachable and affordable for tourists coming from different suburbs in Sydney.

  • 5/5 Benedict U. 4 years ago on Google
The entrance to the arcade is quite unique, being a golden colour. The golden colour is throughout the entire arcade giving it a bright atmosphere. There are quite a few shops inside the arcade too. One end has a couple of statues with a clock and the other has a stained glass window. It was an interesting stop even though I wasn't there for very long.

  • 5/5 Meng Foo C. 4 years ago on Google
Very cozy place with a feel that one would reminiscence the old English shopping mall where retail first started. Shopping was once elevated to a high status with cast iron sky light that seems to float above, allowing the atrium to be lighted up. On both sides are units of retail shops that sells fashion wears, watches, restaurants and cafe. There are side alleys that rise half a level and descend half a level down, opening into more shops and restaurant. Perhaps these have lower rentals as the space are darker without the natural light as the main atrium. At one corner we found an Indian restaurant and had our lunch, lamb cooked with Basmati Rice, Nan with cheese and garlic.

The Melbourne VIC Australia is a very big place for business hub and travel. There are so many different places, you can visit across Melbourne VIC in 2 or 3 days. It's Royal Arcade is a historic shopping place in the Central park Melbourne VIC Australia, it has been open in near 1870, it is the oldest area arcade in near Collins Street Melbourne VIC Australia, in this building elegant light-filled interior, and the large carved mythic figures of Got & Manog flanking the southern entry. There are beautiful shops old coffee and clothes. The building is related with Elizabeth Street on the west. The arcade takes its name from the practice of "doing the block": dressing fashionably and promenading the section of Collins Street between Elizabeth and Swanston streets. Along with Melbourne's other historic arcade, the , it is a tourist icon of Melbourne, and part of the in the CBD. The arcade is listed on the vic heritage and by the National Trust, and Melbourne's Golden Mile heritage walk runs through the arcade.

I love all these historic arcades around Australia. My favourite is the QVB in Sydney, which is amazing. But Melbourne has its own version in the Royal Arcade. This was close to work so from time to time I would drop in here for a work meeting. No matter what cafe you select the coffee is good and the views are spectacular. Well worth a visit for any history buff or just anyone that loves beautiful things.
