Southern Cross Lane is a lovely part of Melbourne on the site of the former Southern Cross Hotel whose claim to fame is that the Beatles stayed there during their tour of Australia in 1964. That was nearly 60 years ago and the site has been upgraded and improved to the point you wouldn't recognise it. There are highrise towers all around but sheltered under a clear covered section is a lane of eateries and a few stores that is well loved by people throughout the year. Whether it's summer salads or winter soups, coffee on the go, or a smashed avocado breakfast, Southern Cross Lane is well worth a visit. I'm fortunate, that it's not far from my base, and think I've pretty much tried every eatery here now. You'll also find this place central to many of Melbourne tourist highlights including Chinatown, Princess Theatre and the many gardens around Melbourne. Notes: Wheelchair accessible. Kid friendly. Tram stop right out the front. Close to Australia Post office.

I already had high expectations from reviews for this place. The ambiance is very nice and seems new. The shops and eatery joints are friendly and we felt welcoming.

Limited options to choose from, I'd rather go to Emporium, QV or Melbourne Central. But there's Bahn mi so thats good.

I recommend this place to everyone going into the city during office hours only. There are a number of cafes a d eating places and a very modern post office. The good thing about this place is that, rain or shine, you will not get wet outside! The lane is covered by a magnificent high glass roof!!!

Some good eateries and, if you’re after a really good coffee, Urban Deli.

When I worked at 121 Exhibition this was my go to place for lunch, coffee, etc. Such a fantastic range of foods and a few other shops. The huge post office is very convenient too. Favourite places are Kenny's and Mad Mex.

Light open space, great choice of food outlets with a combination of chain restaurants and small cafés. Great for spring / summer open air dining, with indoor options available as well. Appropriate in wet weather as there is a glass roof. It can be quite busy during peak periods though (12 - 2pm), and is not good on cold / blustery days, as it can become a bit of a wind tunnel.

We are from Sydney and Unlike many other places in Melbourne we could actually taste the coffee. It still would’ve been nice if it was a bit stronger. There was a lot of people with a good atmosphere, friendly staff and fairly nice coffee. Worth a visit in one of Melbourne’s nice little Lane ways.

Good variety of food options in one place. Eat here rather than crossing the road for cheaper food options that are lower quality food standard.

My new bank, Bank Australia, has a branch here. However, it is also a great place to get a decent coffee and / or lunch, with lots of different varieties to cater for just about any taste, if you are at or near the top end of Bourke Street
