👍 Attended midweek so it was less crowded and more relaxing. Staff were very attentive and friendly. We chose Banquet no.2. Very satisfying dishes, prepared and presented with care. Will select individual entrees and main dishes next time as they look very tempting.Pleased that Eastern Bell allows BYO... Very pleasant Chinese restaurant reminiscent of the 1980s. Wide variety of choices on the menu, quality food, pleasant staff and probably most importantly it is reasonably quiet - so you can enjoy the meal and have a conversation at the same time.

Absolutely love this place! Amazing service, the food tastes so good, NO MSG and the staff are so friendly and so professional. Their service made it feel like I was in a 5 star restaurant in the city or Crown or something. The food was full of flavour and fresh. The ambience of the place was really nice. Can’t wait to go back here again cause your time is so enjoyable and the place is filled with history! 10/10

Beautiful meal and sublime service from the wait staff Definitley try the lemon chicken and the scallops. Edit. One Year later and must say the food is still the most tasty Chinese in Australia. Beautifully prepared and service second to none. Definitely recommend the peking duck pancakes, prawn scallops and deep fried ice cream!

The food was fine except for the dumplings, some were cooked and some clearly undercooked and pink. I hope I don’t get sick.

Have always loved Eastern Bell but the take away last night - a Thursday so near the weekend- was pricy and bad! No flavour in the garlic prawns - onions weren’t properly cooked - rice wasn’t fresh, Sweet and sour chicken was doughy and tasteless. Worst take away I’ve had. Lift your game Eastern Bell!

Service second to none. Food was excellent as usual. Easy to see why this place has been here so many years. What a wonderful lunch.

The food was pleasant but lacked wow factor and many dishes tasted the same. The service was polite but intermittently absent. They kept on bringing half the required number of tea cups, bowls etc then disappearing and not coming back.

Back to the 80’s and 90’s! The decor, the menu, the style. Nostalgic now. Really good Cantonese/Chinese food like we knew back when we were kids. Hate to admit this but I really enjoyed the sweet and sour pork, the way it was cooked reminiscent of the way HK chefs cook it. The fresh Morwong from the fish tank was delicious... not one morsel of flesh left on the bones, even demolished the head! Braised pork leg/knuckle was tender and falling off the bone, very tasty. The Szechuan king prawns so big and fresh, fried so well that even the shell can be eaten... and the flavour! OMG! Stir fried snow peas had a great fresh crunch, not over cooked, just right. Only so-so dish was the crispy skinned chicken - bit dry and over cooked. But the salt/pepper dip was great. Really really reasonably priced. I would return for the decor alone lol.

Food high standard, lovely atmosphere, fresh fish from tank. Unusual beautiful views, looking over the Dandenong. Owner Nicohlas has turned this restaurant into a gem. If mobility issues, take the back street entrance.

The food wasn’t the best, we ordered a lobster with noodles, however there were no ginger in it and it tasted like the lobster was cooked first and then mixed with the noodles, instead of cooking with the noodles. The noodles had no lobster flavour at all. One of the dishes was saltier than sea water, so it wasn’t very good. However, the staff have a positive attitude and offers fantastic service! Very friendly. The lobster is also cheaper than everywhere else. One of the biggest letdowns is that the restaurant is badly lit, so it’s very dim. It doesn’t feel inviting and looks depressing. Wouldn’t recommend coming here, as there are heaps of better restaurants!

My new favorite place to go. Food is good and price is fairly reasonable. But the service is amazing.

Some of the worst Chinese food I've ever had and certainly not cheap! Paid close to $30 for chicken and cashews that had no discernable sauce and seems to be boiled chicken with cashews on a plate, but hey, it has a pretty flower to garnish.

Ordered the top end banquet. Food was nice, but portion sizes quite small. Came away still hungry, which I don't expect when purchasing a banquet.

Good Chinese food with great views of Boxhill and Dandenong range! It is a hidden jewel in Balwyn. The onion pancake and house roast duck was very tasty. The staff were very friendly and proactive - they kept coming to check on various things such as adding hot water to the teapot. The restaurant is clean and tidy, but carpet and furniture is a bit old (although it is spotless!)

This is a wonderful local. Delicious food, MSG free. Lovely restaurant to eat in & they take phone orders for take-away. Generous servings, polite helpful staff & reasonable prices. Off road parking in the street downstairs. Definitely worth trying if you haven't already, certainly one of my favourites.

Pleasantly surprised by the services and the food especially the lobster(2kg) noodles and the steamed fish(2kg) that are skillfully cooked to almost perfection. We enjoyed the other dishes as well.

A birthday celebration and wonderful experience, great service and good food, light and fragrant and the seadood fresh. The orchids on the plates were a nice touch giving thought to presentation - we were treated like we mattered, thank you Nicholas and team.

We wine on a Saturday night and the service was a shocker. Though the staff were extremely hospitable they were really understaffed. It took more than 20 mins for someone to come around to take our order and another 20 mins and 2 prods to get some tea for the table. We then waited almost an hour for the food which was only reasonable in quality at best. The pork belly dish was mostly fat. The quality of the Peking duck was just okay... The highlight was the steamed parrot fish dish and the scallops and vegetables dish we had. We’d likely not go back as there are better restaurants in the eastern suburbs at the same price.

A great lesser known Chinese place. Different to your typical Chinese restaurant. No msg in any of their food, and they are very accommodating with dietary requirements such as gluten and dairy. Food is exceptional, service is great. BYO only, and a small corkage fee. They also do takeaway

Great assortment of food to choose from on the menu. All dishes we ordered were shared on the lazy Susan. The lemon chicken was devine. I also enjoyed the banana fritter with icecream. My friend was not that impressed with the banana split. We could see the Australia Day fireworks from the big windows. Staff very attentive. This was our 4th visit and will go again

We revisited the Eastern Bell Chinese restaurant in Balwyn last Saturday evening, pleased to know that the food there still very good, we ordered sesame prawn toast , prawn cutlets, spring rolls as entrees and West Lake Beef Soup and Hot & Sour Soup. For mains, we had the Salt and Pepper Prawns which were crispy outside, fresh and succulent inside with full of flavour. Another dish was the Gong Baw Pork , the meat was tender and the dark sauce was really tasty with the steamed rice. All food servings were in decent portions, we ordered a pot of Chinese tea really went well with the meals. Although the restaurant was busy, the service was still attentive. Later, Nicholas, the manager came over and we had a pleasant chat. We will definitely come back again with some friends and a bottle of wine to savor more of their delicious food. Note:- entry is via steep stairway from the front door, but later we found out that customers with mobility issues can come in from the back door via back lane from Kalonga road, and it’s only one step to that level. Next time we can drop our friends at the back of the restaurant first , then park the car at the main street or side street as not many car spaces at rear of the building.
