This cafe at the top end of Smith Street Collingwood is small but serves excellent Vietnamese food. It has a fairly simple but straightforward menu with great vegan options and the flavours are amazing. However, the grilled salmon is my fave. The food is great, the prices very reasonable, the atmosphere and vibe is good, and the staff is super friendly and provides a great service. Tonkin Bar & Grill is highly recommended.

Great place to get your vegetarian meal. Half of their menu is vegetarian/vegan dishes. The pho broth feels clean and different to your pho broth. The bun is refreshing and the grill beef was tender and juicy. The portion is a little small though. Food - 7 Service - 7 Vibe - 10 Price - $$$

Amazingly delicious and fresh Vietnamese with predominantly vegan menu. Bao buns were fresh, tasty, fluffy and moorish. Pho with vegan duck was perfect. We really appreciated being able to serve ourselves the condiments (hoisin, chillies, soy, etc) to make our soup exactly how we like it. Fried tofu was pop-in-the mouth yummy. Friendly service and didn't have to wait long for the food.

I was taken to Tonkin at the end of a very long day and warned it was an unpretentious simple restaurant that me hosts enjoyed. I was surprised. A very select menu, 5-6 entrees and two main courses, Pho and Bun, offered. The later came with the choices of beef, pork, chicken, tofu. the food was as fresh as such a small menu could be, all made on demand. Delicious.

Had a really nice meal at Tonkin yesterday, opting for the $18.40 lunch special which is EXCELLENT value. The special gets you any main and either a drink + 1 side or 2 sides if you're super hungry. The bun was fresh and chargrilled pork was succulent. The pho was based on a vegan broth which was much milder and less flavourful than the regular version - however a great option for vegans. The chicken wings and fried tofu were winners. Amazing staff who go above and beyond and despite a busy day being able to fulfil orders at rapid pace. I would come back for the bun with the lunch special. I might give the pho a miss personally but would be keen to give the broken rice a go! Awesome work guys, really well done!

Solid 9/10. The grilled pork BAO was about the best I've had. The grilled beef pho was good. The charred beef added nice smokey highlights, however, the vegan broth lacked a bit of depth relative to a standard beef broth. I'd definitely come back.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Tonkin, a small Vietnamese restaurant located on Smith Street in Collingwood, and I must say, it was an incredible experience. The food at Tonkin is simply outstanding, really good and simple. I tried the pork bao and the chicken vermicelli noodle salad, and both dishes were absolutely amazing. The pork bao was tender and flavorful, with the perfect balance of savory and sweet. The chicken vermicelli noodle salad was a refreshing delight, with the combination of fresh herbs, crunchy vegetables, and succulent chicken. The staff at Tokito were friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable.

Could not believe the pho broth is vegan here. One of the best pho I’ve had period. So much flavour and depth, the smokiness of chargrilled beef also adding to that. Amazing value when going for the lunch set too. Will be back 100%

Average pho without a side of bean sprouts or thai basil served. No options for tendon, tripe or beef balls. Some dishes on the menu weren’t available. Side dishes were alright. I’d recommend heading to Abbotsford instead.

Lovely food at reasonable prices, I had the lunch special which was great value, a pho and two nice starters for $17. The decor is tasteful, and the staff are very friendly. Come and support this great local business 🙂.

Pho & Noodles were good but would've liked more for the Vietnamese iced coffee I got. It's like someone took a sip before I did!

The staff were incredibly nice and on top of it. Incredibly busy for them and job well done! They were the hardest working people I've ever seen! The food itself was on the right track. For a vegan place, it was close to getting the flavour of a beef pho stock but it felt incredibly diluted with the only way of adding flavour is pouring in hoisin sauce. Obviously the idea of pho is having this hearty flavourful broth which unfortunately I felt was slightly lacking. The mushroom and tofu toppings did not add any flavour but felt rather like a "vegan" option if you didn't want a fake protein. The fake duck didn't give a duck flavour but more of a char flavour which happened to be quite nice.

Popped in on a Friday night without a booking. Lucky we could find a table. We both enjoyed a very delicious Vietnamese noodle salad with beef which was full of flavour. The owners / staff are hard working and friendly.

The best Vietmanese food in Melbourne. My taste buds were completely delighted

Simple menu with only a few of the best Vietnamese dishes to choose from. The sliced beef was tasty and tender. In a time of way too many things to choose from, this was a welcomed releif!

Absolutely delicious. From the Prawn and Ginger Dumplings and spring rolls for starters, right through to the hearty Phò and Bún mains. Leaves you feeling satisfied, yet still yearning for more. Proteins are fresh and lean cuts, plus vegan options are extremely tasty. A real reminder of what Smith Street used to be like, and a step in the right direction for one of Melbourne's best dining areas

Great gluten free and vegetarian options for some fantastic Vietnamese cuisine. Menu was short and sweet, which is a plus for a large indecisive group

Friendly staff, delicious food and price is reasonable. I ordered the lunch special $19.63 Vegan Pho with mushroom and tofu, two vegan spring rolls and a can of Coke. Definitely worth coming back for 👌

We were looking for dinner and stumbled across this place and I’m so so glad we did! It’s the best tofu I’ve ever had and the spring rolls were amazing! Staff were really helpful and friendly… Definitely recommend

Delicious vegan duck pho and other Vietnamese restaurant snacks coffee tea and treats. Tonkin is well priced and better quality food and service than most Vietnamese restaurants with friendly and helpful staff.

Hope you like Phò and/or Bún!!! A very cosy atmosphere as they try to jam pack the patrons but, it’s what happens in Collingwood. What you see is what you get as the waitresses double-up as the cooks and do it all in front of you. Good cheap food for great cheap fun!!

Best pho I’ve ever had. The grilled beef was out of this world. Perfect for winter, perfect for lockdown. I want more. The spring rolls are off the charts. I’ll be coming back (or Uber eats-ing it) again

Food was good, well priced for a decent portion. Staff super friendly. Service was slow for a monday, but could be lack of available staff issues.
