Such a great atmosphere! Bustling with conversation but the absolute best bit was the food - just delicious, especially the duck and chocolate mousse dessert!

Gingerboy was a mixed experience. While the staff were amazing (best part about the place really, saved it), the food was not as elevated as the prices we were being charged. The dishes need to be way more reimagined or special to make portions that tiny. Not the greatest in terms of value, or uniqueness of taste. Food was not memorable.

Yummy! Food was incredible. Wait staff also fantastic. Would recommend to anyone, however be cautious that it is expensive, so maybe I wouldn't recommend it to anyone if they couldn't afford it, but I do believe that everyone would enjoy the food if it was free.

Friendly staff, and great tasting food. Opted for the oysters with nam jimm and while the nam jimm wasn't spicy it tasted great paired with fresh oysters. For mains we had duck massaman which was superbly cooked with no dryness, the accompanying massaman paired well and wasn't abundantly tart and had the right amount of richness. We also ordered a side of baby cos salad which came with a sesame sauce and Vietnamese mint that was alright but was slightly lacklustre in comparison to our mains. We had this with glasses of rosé, sitting in the outside dining with the embers of the last days of summer and overall it was an enjoyable experience that we will be back for.

I have never had better food in my life. It was absolutely delish. Best restaurant ever. Absolutely fantastic service from June, Lily, Nicole, Jenny, Yvan and Alex (very friendly all of them). My favourite dish was the chicken spare ribs so yummy. I would 100/10 recommend. Such a good experience at Gingerboy. Thanks!

The service is impeccable and they went above and beyond to check on some dietary requirements. The Thai moon cocktail was so good that we ended up ordering more than one. They have a good wine list as well. The fish was cooked perfectly and the duck curry was rich but very tasty. The desserts were rich and decadent but if you don't have a big sweet tooth would recommend splitting one for 2 people. Thank you for making a very memorable dining experience and we would definitely be back.

We have been to Gingerboy a few times now and it is still the benchmark in Melbourne asian fusion restaurants. Every dish is impressive with beautiful flavours, creativity and very high quality ingredients. Along with the amazing food, the service is always on point and friendly, thanks Johann. Gingerboy is an absolute must go.

More like "Chilli Boy" - it will definitely please chilli lovers - there is a special chilli cocktail too..:) Great service but does not compensate for lack in taste. I had the prawn fritters - flavour & texture was compromised by over-frying. Close to the theatre end of Exhibition street.

Gingerboy Adventure for the win.. You get to enjoy their degustation menu of their best seller dishes. The food was very yummy. Asian fusion and cooked pretty well. The Kingfish was very fresh and loved the flavours of their dishes. Their duck curry was flavoursome all the way to their dessert. Service was topnotch and it was a very good last dinner meal for me in Melbourne. Thank you 🙏🏼

I was excited about this meal but disappointed overall. We had dishes we wanted to try and they had a function so forced all guests to take a set menu. Sent an email confirming the booking and wish they had told us then. We had the $97 set menu and none of the dishes were a highlight to be honest. Started with ceviche (which was nice), son in law eggs, dumplings, chicken ribs, stir fry, cucumber salad, duck curry and milk parfait. Salad and stir fry were below average and rest of the dishes were ok not great. Incredible options in melbourne for Asian fusion cuisine and I was really hoping that I would love food here….I enjoyed it but not going back. I have been to Chin chin maybe 10 times and was hoping to have another option. Overrated.

Used to be a popular asian fusion restaurant in Melbourne. Quality has dropped slightly since in the early 2010s. Worth a try if you need something Asian fusion.

We dined here as a family and tried the banquet. Lovely atmosphere, not overly noisy. Good and efficient service. Food came out with reasonable timing so there's not much of a wait between courses. Left full and happy.

It’s not easy doing fusion. Presenting novel dishes in a gastronomic way is hard. Really hard. Although not everything was different, everything surpassed my expectations. The eggplant curry puff had a delicious sauce, the duck curry was solid, the fried egg had a delightful chutney. My favourite dish was the baby cos salad. With both chilli and relish, it had an intriguing dressing that was not too heavy. Tasted like a yogurt / mayo hybrid and I loved it. Cocktails were solid. Seats were uncomfortable. Prices a little high ($5 per curry puff??) but you pay for quality.

Gingerboy exceeded all my expectations as I'd only ever heard great things about it, however my partner and I went in early Feb 2020 to see what the hype is all about and OMG. We were in Melbourne for a week and this was definitely a highlight. It is easy to get to, service is great and the food is so full of flavour as tasty as hell. The restaurant area isn't huge on the bottom floor however do know there is an upstairs area for bigger functions. The duck curry and springrolls were a huge standout!! Would go back for sure

Attended the ‘all you can eat’ yum cha this morning and although the food was all very good, it should not be advertised as all you can eat. We were unable to get more of any of the food we wanted and were made to feel like that were doing us a favour when they brought more dessert. It’s more a pricey banquet than all you can eat yum cha.

Went on a man-date to gingerboy and was not disappointed. Start with some banter, the occasional joke and ended up ordering their top three dishes. Son in law egg thing was delicious, literally burst of flavour. Absolutely loved the chicken ribs and duck curry. Food was good quality, as was the service.

Food is not worth the price tag. Quality and quantity is bad. $15 for 3 tiny dumplings! And I ordered fresh mint leave tea, 5 leaves + a pot of hot water for $5!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Honest opinion head over to Hochi Mama or Rice Paper Scissors 100% worth your time and $$

Lucked it in tonight - no reservation, but ate at the bar. Enjoyed the scrumptious flavours of the banquet, and the delicious cocktails. Exceptional staff really made our night. The host, 3 bartenders and the owner, all great people with interesting stories and good at holding a conversation. Rolled out after 2 hours. So full and can’t wait to recommend it to friends. Will definitely come again. Will definitely make a reservation, and hope to sit at the bar again as well.

I must admit... Was here for work trip and the dinner place was at Gingerboy. Initially skeptical but pleasantly surprised with the flavours, at times sort of a fusion of different asian cuisine tastes. Service was really warm and helpful.

Been here many times - but came in most recently for Pre Theatre menu. Great option to see before Mary Poppins, very close and great value. Great selection of dishes like the kingfish, duck curry and dessert. Absolutely love the cocktails as well!

Disappointing - perhaps it was just our experience of the banquet menu. Approx. $220 for two people not including drinks. We selected the $95 pp banquet meal plus $15pp to upgrade the main dish to Waygu steak. The eggs and seasoned plate of cucumbers were questionable and I believe that these two brought down the experience of the tasting menu. Had they been other items this review may have gotten 4 stars. The menu includes: 3 pieces of sashimi each, a plate of seasoned cucumber, 2 eggs, 2 dumplings, a bowl of fried chicken, a stir fry plate of veggies, $15pp added on wagyu - in substitute of the duck curry, and ice cream. Definitely not worth the price. Overall if you are going for a good food experience, consider other places - Lucy Liu, Red Spice Road, & Ho Chi Mama.

The portions are quite generous here and service was very friendly. However, when it became more busy, it was hard to get the waiters’ attention from our side by the window. We ordered the kingfish sashimi, chicken ribs, and son in law eggs as starters. The kingfish was delicious and the son in law eggs are a must! The tamarind chicken ribs were okay. They were a bit soggy and wish they were more crunchy. The portion is great though as we got 12 ribs in the starter and were basically full after these dishes. The pork belly main was a bit disappointing as the salad on the side was bland. We hoped it would cut through the fattiness but it didn’t taste sour or sweet, just a bit salty :/ we were too full for dessert but the options sounded delicious. Lastly there were a few moths flying around our table constantly through our dinner which was quite irritating and makes it feel a bit unsanitary.

Went here for a ‘Dine in the Dark’ event that’s hosted by Fever and I absolutely LOVED the food. I had the meat set menu (curated for the event) and it was delicious! You could really see the level of thought put into it and I can’t wait to try things from their actual menu! The chairs need to go tho. Surely we can get something that’s more comfortable?!

I was very excited to give Gingerboy a go as our friend had recommended, it was nice but didn’t think it was all that great. The dumplings were the best thing we tasted all night, awesome flavour with good chilli. Pork was nice but again didn’t stand out. Duck red curry was nice but no standout, didn’t have enough chilli or major flavours, needed something to breakthrough the creaminess. Very disappointed with the cocktails, I only had an espresso martini but it only half filled the glass, for $25 was not worth it, didn’t taste like there was any alcohol in there and was too sweet. Nice atmosphere and was cool to sit on the communal table

We loved the whole experience. One was vegetarian, I typically don't love veg food as much, but majority of our dishes were veg and I was blown away by how delicious everything was, I didn't even notice (that I usually miss meat dishes!). I loved the oysters and cocktails, delicious. The fish main had interesting flavours, loved the rice noodles dish and tofu/veggies dish. The son in law eggs are yummy too! Host explained and answered our questions on the menu, explained dishes that we had no idea about. No one rushed us from the table, so we enjoyed our meal and drinks and the atmosphere. The other team member who served our table, they were super friendly and personable, talked to us lots and gave us local bar tips as well. I will definitely be recommending Gingerboy for the experience, food, drinks. I'll be back to try more of the menu out!

The son in law egg was quite good but the chicken ribs were average, not bad flavour but were soggy. The greens were pretty meh. Not bad food overall but better most other places and for slightly cheaper too.

We went with $85pp “GB’s adventure” option (swapped the chicken larb for chicken spare ribs) - there is a looot ofd food and some dishes are good but the food wasn't amazing or anything mind blowing compared to other similar style Asian spots like supernormal, chin chin, and Lucy Liu. Friendly staff and foods come out at a good pace. Good / Ok Roasted ocean trout was good, cooked perfectly and the black bean sauce went really well with it - probably my favourite from the night. Kingfish sashimi was good and fresh. Fried sweet corn cakes were good. Leg duck curry was ok though the duck a bit dry. Disliked Shumai and spring rolls - not sure if these are made in house but taste wise they were no different to frozen ones. Desserts were a massive disappointment - we were served 4 different types of small plates of desserts and all of them were very underwhelming - not sure how best to describe it but it felt like kids experimenting in the kitchen almost. Just one solid dessert would’ve been so much better. Son in law eggs were underwhelming nothing special.

This was our first time visiting and found the food very tasty. Service was a little slow with what felt like other larger tables getting served more promptly than the 2 of us. We did find the atmosphere good, not too loud considering the flooring. Food highlight was the pork belly bun. Delicious!

Lovely food at gingerboy. Stand outs for our group wee wagyu wrapped in la lot leaves, ocean trout, corn cakes and black sesame custard. The staff were prompt and friendly but looked a bit harried as they rushed around, perhaps they were down on staff. Time limits on bookings are observed fairly strictly here.

What a great meal. I went for the all you can eat yum cha Sundays. Everything was brilliant. The staff were very informative and friendly and looked after the members of our party with special dietary requirements. The fried eggplant was delicious, as were the fried cuttlefish, pork bao, curry puffs, kingfish sashimi and stir fried veggies. There looked to be a nice collection of cocktails but I didn't try any. I will have to come back for dinner.

Waited 40 minutes in line from 5:30 and got to the front of the line at 6:10 assuming we would get in straight away. Once we were at the front we were told that it was another hour and a half wait. Why not just take bookings at this point? Ridiculous waste of time, not worth the effort.

We did the lunch break menu as part of a corporate lunch! The food was very appetising and wait staffs really great. Loved the stir fry, banh mini and the siu mai! Of course the dessert platter was the highlight. We did have a plate of sashimi , banh and siu Mai for ourself but we had to share the rest and as it was a corporate lunch it was very hard to dig into the common plates and made it difficult to share between us. A la carte menu did look on the expensive end. But lunch break deal couldn’t be blamed for the price .

Customer service was very poor. Food was constantly delayed, despite guests around us being served on time for our 2020 Valentines Day set menu. Had to ask multiple times for updates. Guests who arrived later than us were proritised, to a point that we were the last guest to leave Gingerboy. The Matradee was exceptionally rude, no eye contact, no greeting, no explanation of courses, no smile, no desire to be there. She was excellent at dumping the food and leaving abruptly. Food was tasty, as always.

Whilst the decor and service was very good, the food did not live up to the hype. As far as Asian fusion goes, this place does not hit the mark (way off the standard in Melbourne) - flavours and combinations were sub par and value for money was poor. We had the "quick trip" banquet which at $70 pp plus drinks left me wanting more. Quantity was underwhelming - don't think I've experienced a restaurant serving you one dumpling and one egg as separate courses before and the duck curry was awful. The only good dish was the chicken ribs. You're much better off going to Supernormal or Chin Chin for Asian fusion, they're miles better in terms of taste and quantity of food - for around the same cost too!

Cool, modern decor and friendly staff. The kingfish was excellent (I could eat a meal of it by itself!), and the pork dumplings very good as was the cuttlefish. Also had the pork belly main and bokchoy side which were also very nice. The only disappointment was the wagyu beef sirloin which was tasty but a bit chewy. It didn't strike me as wagyu which should always be melt in your mouth tender, rich and buttery. Wasn't the case on this occasion. Maybe it was a one-off. The rest of the meals and experience were very enjoyable.

My partner and I had this delivered via Providoor for an anniversary dinner and we were blown away by how flavourful this can be just reheated. The gyoza, pork belly and chinese greens were highlights. Gingerboy is a certain subset of casual dining that excites palates with bold South-East Asian flavours. I would always recommend it up there with Chin Chin for a no-thrills but fail-proof dining experience.

Saturday night banquet feasting at Gingerboy was to much fun. Dined from GB Banquets. The food was incredible. We had a vegetarian in the group who was catered to on the Vegetarian banquet so did not miss out on any fun. Standout dishes from the group were the Son in Law Eggs and the Chicken Spare Ribs 😋 …I also always love a good Cucumber Salad! We did the early sitting so they needed the table back when the second sitting arrived. We were able to move upstairs to the bar to continue drinking through the yummy wine list which was lovely. The bar staff were awesome, so attentive and great conversation from both staff and other customers sitting at the bar. Thanks to the team at Gingerboy for a fabulous night!

Dinner @GingerBoyMelb and got GB's Adventure Banquet. Hiramasa kingfish sashimi, tamarind and chilli dressing, pickled cucumber, creme fraiche, red elk Wow, lovely fresh start to the meal. Love the balance of the sweet and acidic elements of the pickled cucumber and dressing, creaminess from the creme fraiche, and the crunch of the dehydrated rice. Son in law eggs, chilli jam, spiced tamarind caramel, Thai basil Never eaten this before and despite not being a big fan of eggs I liked it very much, especially with the delicious chilli jam Smashed cucumber salad, shallot, coconut yoghurt, black fungus, mint, Sichuan chilli oil, sesame Who knew the humble cucumber could be turned into something more tasty? The thin fungus is chewy, the coconut yoghurt refreshing, the chilli spicy, mint for more freshness and sesame seeds for crunch. Steamed aromatic pork dumpling, roasted red chilli sauce, fried shallot A lovely dumpling with soft skin, tasty pork filling and that salty spicy flavour, particularly from the chilli sauce. Salt and pepper chicken spare rib, tamarind hot sauce Who doesn't love ribs? Get your fingers dirty and dive in to enjoy the tender chicken coated in a sour but deceptively spicy tamarind sauce. Wooo, that chilli sauce keeps building! Thai red duck leg curry, red confit shallots, hot and sour salad, coconut cream Wok tossed Asian greens, sugar pea, baby corn, spiced oyster sauce, Chinese sausage, garlic Oh this is amazing! A creamy sumptuous curry coating Jasmine rice is unbelievable. And the duck is fantastic too. Tender, succulent, slightly crunchy in parts on the outside. Along with the yummy Asian greens, this is an excellent end to the savoury items. Now for dessert. Chocolate and Vietnamese coffee mousse, macadamia crumb, dulce de leche ice cream I had asked if it was possible to have the dessert swapped for the mousse which is on the Luxe Journey banquet. A very generous serve, one spoonful of the absolutely decadent chocolatey mousse has your sweet tastebuds come alive! There's a subtle aftertaste of the deep blend of the Vietnamese coffee. The dulce de leche ice cream is also delicious and refreshing and pairs well with the mousse. Fantastic end to an excellent array of flavoursome dishes in the ambient upstairs space and enjoyed the friendly professional service. #Asianfusion #AsianFood #sashimi #soninlaweggs #dumping #ribs #duckcurry #mousse #Vietnamesecoffee #dulchedeleche #icecream #sweettooth #dessert #foodcoma #foodie #melbournefood #melbournecbd @zomatomelb

There was something hard to pin down about our experience at Gingerboy...and the lack of memorable food or service turned out to be it. We had the GB Adventure tasting menu — each dish was pleasant enough but didn't really pop in the way other tasting menus do at similarly priced restaurants (the exception was the chicken wings that had a delicious sweet/sour sauce). The service was somewhat haphazard. The experience was 'good' but not the standout suggested by reviews.

Went here for early dinner. Luxe Journey 100pp. The kingfish was nice, followed by Son in law eggs with a spicy sauce. Eggs were yummy with the sauce. Disappointed with the pork dumplings. Cucumber salad was nice. The Wagyu beef was a stand out of the evening. The rolled rice noodles were good and the Salad delicious. For myself we swapped dessert for their strawberry with I found way to sweet. Service was good.

Had the banquet and the food was amazing. There wasn't anything I didn't enjoy, just wish they served more of it. Service was as expected for a restaurant of this calibre. The premises are modern and clean.

Wonderful food, great follow though on small concerns, nice selection of wine, service with a smile and a good balance between chatty and professional, ambiance was unique which I loved, price was totally acceptable considering. Unfortunately I hate paying good money and having the back of my chair often rubbing the person behind me. Sorry I have been to my fair share of restaurants ... Quality, Pubs, Cheapo, Casino, exclusive I don't often get the problem and I hate it when I do. Would love also if they can supply a table card, with more details on the meal. So we ordered the $100 menu, I could hardly remember what was what by the end.

Great Service and Great food except for a couple of dishes. When I'm in Melbourne again ill definitely be returning to try other dishes and some of the same ones. Top dishes were Spanner Crab & Cuttlefish Bun, Soft shell crab bao, Salt & Pepper Chicken Ribs & Red Duck Curry. Not so great dishes were the Wagyu Steak (was a bit bland and tough - strange for wagyu) and the rice noodle rolls again were bland and needed more flavour.

Had been looking forward to coming here sooo much and it was every so slightly underwhelming - drinks service was extremely slow - we had the 100 dollar tasting menu - was for the amount of food was had was very good value - started with fresh Oysters - was not a great fan of the salsa that accompanied them. Scallops which were very well cooked - cucumber salad which also was a little lack luster with the sauce - The Crab bun was spectacular - the dumpling also amazing & the beef wagyu was super tender and tasty.

🍤 Prawn Bun 🥟 Half Shell Scallops, Pork Dumplings 🥒 Smashed Cucumber Salad 🍣 Kingfish Sashimi 🥚 Son in Law Eggs 🥩 MS7 Sher Wagyu 🧄 Stir Fried Ride Noodle Rolls, Vegan XO, Cos Lettuce, Rice 🍦Mango/Passionfruit and Coconut/Lime Sorbet Gingerboy is a vibrant CBD restaurant & bar with funky, disco-style decor dishiing up south-east Asian, street style eats. Head Chef Teage created a menu with a nod to his favourite hawker adventures. 🥟 Not only is the food SE Asian inspired but so is there killer drinks list. Even though some ingredients were missing, their expert bar staff were able to mix us up something even better. You can take a seat at the bar down stairs or upstairs for a meal, it’s the perfect vibe to catch up with friends. The service here was amazing and definitely has improved from previous visits, we felt they went above and beyond to ensure we were looked after. We ordered their Luxe Journey Banquet Menu ($100pp) and although we had some strict allergies, we were fed very well. You will not be hungry after this! 👅 The first few dishes were okay (Kingfish, Son in Law Egg, Cucumber Salad) lacked seasoning and that wow factor. The Scallops were sadly very dry and the Prawn Buns were delicious but only lightly filled leaving us craving more. 🍤 Dish of the night for me was the drool worthy Wagyu Steak, the Rice Noodle Rolls and the spicy Gyoza. I don’t feel the rice and lettuce were well thought out sides, some greens would have been better. 🥩 Now that I know which dishes I enjoy, I would probably order from the A La Carte Menu next time but the Banquet is perfect for groups who may find the menu too overwhelming to choose from. It was a mixture of shared and individuals dishes and as a party of 3 we often had 2 dishes to share which was plenty. So good for odd numbers 😉 ⭐️ 3.5/5 (Good)

Gingerboy never disappoints. Service was friendly and impeccable and each dish came served with a great explanation of the flavours. Pace for the banquet was perfect and we truly enjoyed the visit as both an experienced and a meal together with friends.

Great food. I was wanting to visit Ginger Boy for 7 years and finally made it there. Everything on the menu looks delicious. We tried the chicken ribs, beef tartare, snapper and the dumplings. Flavours were brought together really well. We were a little disappointed when they didn't do their last orders for dessert before they closed the kitchen and said they couldn't serve us. Finally, they did see our dissapointment and gave us the dessert menu. We are glad we had the dessert, it was outstanding! Staff was friendly. Really good vibe to the place. Whoever had their play list on for music that night - 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Wonderful experience dining at Gingerboy! The host Caesar and our waitress Steffy were both phenomenal and attentive. The food and cocktails were delicious, would highly recommend the chicken ribs. The restaurant itself was also lovely and well decorated. We will be back for a visit!

Amazing food mostly very spicy so be careful. For me slickness was adding the whole me dimension to wonderful dishes. Thank you!

Friendly service Recommended dishes - chic spares ribs (entree dish but portion was big, worth the price) - crispy pork bao (the lime mayo was very good and refreshing) Not recommended - duck curry (curry & duck is cook separate, can't taste any curry on the duck meat. Is it too over price) - best day ever cocktail (taste not good, we order 2 different cocktails is pre-mix. I'm quite disappointed)

The food as well as service was outstanding. From the initial welcoming, to the end of our evening,, Ginger boy staff demonstrated outstanding care and ability particularly Arthur who mostly served us.

Fantastic value for money lunch specials. Food top notch, will not be disappointed. Asian inspired, elevated food! Tofu wontons, chicken turmeric curry, salad and a glass of rose! What more can we ask for. X

Discovered Gingerboy as a finalist for Restaurant Catering Awards in Melbourne, and opting for the GB Adventure there proved to be the most satisfying set menu I've ever experienced. The service was impeccable, with various wait staff members, all equally accommodating. The culinary journey began with the Hiramasa Kingfish Sashimi, Pomelo, Salmon Roe, and Fried Shallot – a fantastic starter that set the tone for the meal. The Son-in-law Egg, featuring Chilli Jam, Prik Nampla, and Thai Basil, was an intriguing concept, demanding that you savour the entire egg with all its spices and herbs. The Cucumber Salad, featuring Shallot, Coconut Yogurt, Black Fungus, Mint, Ginger, and Sesame, was a personal favourite. The combination of flavours and textures was superb. The Steamed Aromatic Pork Dumplings, accompanied by Smoked Chilli and Crispy Saltbush, were good but not the best I've tasted. The Salt and Pepper Chicken Spareribs, served with Tamarind Hot Sauce, pleasantly surprised me, contrary to some reviews. The spices were well-balanced and not overpowering. The Thai Red Duck Leg Curry, featuring Confit Shallots, Hot and Sour Salad, and Coconut Cream, presented the option to sample both the red and yellow curry. Opting for a combination of both is highly recommended, as the yellow curry was particularly delightful. By the time the Wok Tossed Asian Greens with Snakebeans and Spiced Mushroom Sauce arrived, I was already quite full. Nonetheless, it was a fine dish, even though I managed only a spoonful. The Condensed Milk Parfait, adorned with Chocolate Malt Crumb, Chocolate Sorbet, and Finger Lime, served as a delectable conclusion. The only minor note is that the drinks were on the expensive side for me. However, the overall ambiance was fantastic, with a clean and inviting atmosphere, even in the restroom. This dining experience truly took our taste buds on an exciting adventure, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

We came to Gingerboy for a girls’ night out and were incredibly impressed with the standard of food and service. Our host Vanessa was extremely attentive, warm and friendly from the get go. She provided excellent recommendations and always made sure to check on us without being overbearing. The food itself was delicious and very aromatic. We loved the dumplings, duck curry and rolled noodles in particular. We also tried a couple of cocktails and enjoyed them all. We went on a Thursday and it was quiet and very easy to hear each other. Very pleasant ambience. Highly recommend!

Came here for the first time for a quick appetiser and really have to say the pork belly boas and chicken spare ribs were amazing!! Cocktail was also unreal, shout out to Vanessa who gave us such great service even when it was her first shift! Laura was also amazing and recommended us great choices.
