Good food and lovely atmosphere. We ordered two of their lunch special which was $35 for a set of: 2 pieces of sashimi, 1 classic ramen (small size), 2 pieces of gyoza, and apple juice and lemonade. And for dessert we ordered matcha, and redbean dessert separately. The set was good, beautifully presented and the ramen we ordered both was rich and flavourful (we had a shoyu and miso ramen), the broth was a bit salty near the end but good nonetheless. The gyoza was cooked well crispy and soft, served with a base of light soy sauce. The sashimi tasted fresh, served with soy sauce, shredded cabbage and tiny dash of wasabi. The drinks we had apple juice, which was surprisingly from fresh apples, tasted great! And the lemonade was from a class of pre bought lemonade, still quite good. Now for the best part, the matcha dessert (first option in menu), the matcha jelly was deep and rich full of matcha flavour, paired well with the icecream and some sort of syrup, I would come back just for this, lovely. And the Redbean icecream was okay too but pales in comparison to the matcha, probably don't get this one. The dishes are on the pricier side, and the wait is quite long for the food to come out so be prepared for that, the ambiance was very nice, you can choose from a bar seating or banquette seating, the room was dark and warm. Customer service was good, they took the time to explain the menu items to us. Overall, will come back to try other items on the menu, recommended.

I’m a Hakata Gensuke boy myself, always have been. “Where to get ramen in Melbourne” my friends ask… BLOODY HAKATA GENSUKE OF COURSE.
Now i’ve tried Gogyo, I have felt a shift in my feelings. Hakata will always be the one for the god fire, open up the senses, karaage in the chicken salt kind of lunch however my experience at Gogyo - it really did get me excited and really did make me confident in saying that the ramen game in Melbourne is truly 🔥. When you read the menu you are asked if ur a Tonkotsu Classic kinda human or a Tonkotsu Modern *special* kinda pal, Myself - I love classic things - can’t go past a Dimmie or potato cake from the fish n chip shop but can I go past a ramen with spicy miso paste and fragrant garlic oil? Absolutely not, so without hesitation - That’s what I ordered. This is a classy spot, situation on Brunswick St the main dining room is behind some curtains. I felt at home, the staff so lovely, accommodating and showed me to a bar seat for my lonely self to plonk down on. The ramen came out quick with a side of Karaage (perfectly fried, but lacked that special special salt from H.G) and it was absolutely gorgeous looking. The first thing that caught my eye was the collagen floating in the beige rich and powerful broth, the gooey egg and the absolutely phenomenal amount of spring onions. This bowl had everything - and to be honest, at a price of $27 it damn well should! The broth had a rich texture elevated by the spicy miso paste and the garlic oil, a porky flavour with an amazing mouth feel. I think there was onion in the broth as well, this only added to the flavour and was a nice tough. The noodles could not be faulted whatsoever, they had an amazing bounce and an amazing texture. Can I fault anything in this ramen? Not really, the pork could have been a bit more melt in my mouth but that would be nitpicking. This is a truly great option if you’re in need for a northside soup and can’t venture into the city! 🥢🥢🥢🥢🥢 Broth Flavour: 🍜🍜🍜🍜 🍜/5 Soup ingredients: 🍜🍜🍜🍜.755 Noodle Quality: 🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜 Overall: 🍜🍜🍜🍜.75/5 🥢🥢🥢

When you first walk in, it’s a small but quaint dining area. Peel back the curtain however, and a larger dining area is revealed with an exposed kitchen, bar seating, brick walls and arched windows. Moody and elevated. It totally took us by surprise and it really set the tone for the rest of the experience. The menu is wide and there’s a variety of sides. You have the option of getting the “Special” version of your choice of ramen, which is essentially extra ingredients for a slightly higher price. It turns out to be better value than to add separate toppings, which I thought was a great idea. Their specialty ramen is the kogashi (burnt miso) ramen which gives a more smokey taste to the broth, but we opted for the classic Tonkotsu options. We had the Tonkatsu Classic and Tonkatsu Modern - both bowls were fantastic. I couldn’t fault anything about them. It was hearty, bursting with umami, the pork melted in your mouth, and the toppings were substantial. The noodles were also the perfect consistency and cooked really well. The broth wasn’t too salty nor too oily. It was definitely one of the better bowls of ramen I’ve had in Melbourne. The Octopus Karaage was also great, it had a little too much batter in comparison to the octopus itself but nonetheless still tasty. I’d probably try something else next time though, octopus isn’t really my thing I’ve realised. Overall super impressed with the ramen here. I didn’t know what to expect and it worked in my favour because I was blown away. We don’t hear enough about GOGYO (possibly because of the price point in comparison to other ramen bars?) but I think it’s underrated and deserves more recognition. It serves up top quality food and doesn’t compromise on remaining true to the culture.

Very special ramen joint. Be sure to get the side dishes, they compliment the ramen really well. Only complaints were that the prices were a bit high, but to be expected for a place like this, and was asked to tip which really shouldn’t be a thing here

We had a great dinner at Gogyo, freezing winters night in Melbourne but absolutely pumping inside. Had the kingfish carpaccio, wagyu sukiyaki spring rolls and couldn't go without some chicken karaage to start followed by the kogashi miso ramen and a katsu curry. Staff were really friendly and attentive especially being a very busy night with the restaurant being almost full for most of it. Checkout our YouTube review for more at Bec & Dan

It was my first time trying restaurant quality ramen at GOGYO Fitzroy. There is definitely something special about the broth which is highly complex and sophisticated. Also loved the super fresh noodles. Another way to describe the Kogashi Shoyu ramen that I tried is the Koreanised Chinese dish Jja Jang Meyoen transformed into Japanese ramen. Last but not least, the atmosphere as well as the staff are near perfect 👌 Highly recommended.

A cult-favorite, Gogyo has a reputation as one of Melbourne’s finest ramen establishments. Despite being a relative of Ippudo, another popular ramen chain, Gogyo boasts a slightly more refined dining experience, as well as a specialization in the Kogashi Miso Ramen, which sees the soup-base set ablaze before serving. And yeah, it’s all pretty impressive. Robust flavors, immaculate moody vibes, a surprisingly comfortable dining experience, and the ability to book ahead (no queuing) means we will definitely be back. While everything we ordered was fantastic, our personal highlight was the Karaage and Yuzu Bitters, which were just superb. 🔥 Kogashi Miso 🐽 Tonkotsu Modern 🍗 Karaage Chicken 🥒 Garlic Goma Cucumber 🐟 Kingfish Carpaccio 🍋 Yuzu Bitters

It was a pleasure dining at this restaurant the other night. Was surprised when we sat down that it was a part of the infamous ippudo series of ramen restaurant. Sure it did stand out with the rest of the chain restaurants within Melbourne in terms of the atmosphere and the wider variety of food that was on the menu. The restaurant has a generous amount of space with all of its seats. Though it can get quite busy as the night went on, so I would recommend booking prior to ensure yourself a spacious seating space. The staff were nice and friendly, they asked if we need any additional or any change of plates throughout the meal. A highlight apart from the ramen was the wagyu beef tataki, they were cut thick slices that were marinated for umami. If you are feeling a hit adventurous you can try out their Kogashi Miso Ramen, it came in a thick black broth that is definitely not the typical miso that you see anywhere else. All in all a great restaurant to stop by when you are in the area.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at this restaurant, with its remarkable and truly unique ambiance, offers an experience like no other. As you step inside and pass through the curtain, you are instantly transported to a different realm, creating a stark contrast to the environment outside. The atmosphere is a perfect blend of industrial yet warm and inviting, with a lot of chatter and noise which adds to the experience. Not only is the ambiance captivating, but the food itself is an absolute delight. My companions and I ordered several small dishes to share, and we were not disappointed. The ramen dishes served here are incredibly flavorful, leaving a lasting impression on your taste buds. Additionally, the portion sizes are quite generous, ensuring that you leave the restaurant fully satisfied. Unfortunately, we weren't able to try any of the dessert offerings, as we opted to have a little wander outside on the pleasant evening and ended up enjoying some gelato. However, I have heard great things about their desserts from others who have dined there. In conclusion, I highly recommend paying a visit to this restaurant to experience its remarkable ambiance and indulge in their delectable ramen offerings. I am confident that it will leave a lasting impression on you, just as it did on me.

This place is a serious contender with top Ramen in Melbourne. Fantastic atmosphere with plenty of booths for bigger groups. Their edamame and karaage chicken are top notch. Definitely don't leave without trying! Overall a fantastic night out with friends. Service was brilliant. Perfectly priced as well. 👏

Good quality foods and reasonable prices. Cozy and relaxing environment. Great range of options from deep fried to rice bowl, sashimi to ramen. Just like the name of this restaurant— five elements. It’s all about balance. Would love to come back and try more food.

Visited here twice and tried the following dishes from the menu: - Wagyu Spring Roll: very crispy filled with thinly sliced beef which had a concentrated sweet sukiyaki flavour; the spicy mayo helped balance the sweetness of the spring roll - Ebi Katsu Bao: prawn katsu was quite thin, soaked in a sweet tonkatsu like sauce, the mint leaf was a bit overpowering - Pork Katsu Curry Rice: added double pork katsu and it was definitely worth the value; meat was very thick and tender but the panko coating was not that flaky and crisp. There was also not much curry to go with the katsu and rice; curry was runny and tasted weak - Pork Gyoza: decent size and standard flavour with a good amount of meat filling, pan fried skin was a little crispy - Kogashi Miso Ramen: the charred miso base creates a pitch black colour in the chicken broth; it had a deep sweet and savoury umami flavour. The pork belly was extremely tender, breaking apart while trying to pick it up with the chopsticks. Can't go wrong with a half boiled egg with a creamy yolk. Noodles were slightly hard, just the way I prefer, and the cabbage was a nice addition to cut through the richness of the broth - Tori Shoyu: the chicken broth had a balance of savouriness from the shoyu dashi with the added richness from the pork back fat. Initially the bonito oil was very noticeable and fragrant but gradually blends in well. The bamboo shoots tasted like it was marinated for a while, very flavoursome. Noodle was slightly thicker than the Kogashi miso ramen - Matcha Kuzuneri: matcha mochi jelly had a very similar texture to the Japanese Yokan traditional sweets; thick, pasty and slightly grainy. Flavour of matcha was good and quite earthy, balanced with the flavour of the black sugar syrup. The favourite part of the dessert was the side of sobacha ice cream which is a buckwheat tea flavour; nice earthy roast with a mild caramel like sweetness - Red Bean Ice Cream: the sweet red bean flavour was mild, quite milky in taste The go to are the ramens and the sobacha ice cream.

The modern Tonkatsu ramen is one of the best in Melbourne considering there are limited options for top tier ramen in town. The beef tataki was quite disappointing for $25. The sauce was overpowering the meat and taste. I think lighter yuzu ponzu of some sort would have been better.

So good! The ramen is delicious, and you can tell the noodles are hand made. The ramen is also full of flavour and super tasty. The fried chicken and sashimi was also divine. The service was also amazing, really attentive staff, and always around when needed. Really polite and quick. The venue is also really nicely presented. Moody and dark, great spot Really enjoyed the experience, and will definitely go back. Give it a go !

Possibly the best ramen I've had in Melbourne. Definitely worth a try. Charred Miso Ramen, Octopus Karaage, Wagyu Spring Roll, Kingfish Ceviche are all great. Good atmosphere as well.

I stumbled across this place by accident. Thank god for this! I'm so happy that I found GOGYO. Every element of our experience was outstanding - from the friendliness of the staff to the ambience - and the food. WOW. Highly recommend this place if you want to impress someone or if you even want to just spoil yourself!

Having loved their ramen from their sister shop, Ippudo, Gogyo did not disappoint, but it was so much better! Noodles were thin, flat and slightly chewy in a good way. The broth was fatty, rich and flavourful - again yums! And it came with cabbage which although unusual was definitely needed to soak up the fatty broth. 100% recommend.

Dang this place is one heck of a different ramen restaurant. If you like yoko onu in Prahran ,this one is definitely up your alley. The charred miso ramen may be a little too flavourful for some. Suggest to try it and share while you get another milder ramen. The tori paitan ramen was really good too.

Fast service, authentic Japanese style set up. They got a fair range of Japanese alcohol worth to give it a go. The ramen we had wasn’t bad at all. Very interesting flavour and everything was cooked perfectly! All staffs are very friendly. The only reason why I didn’t give 5 stars is because the moment we entered the door, there’s a very strong and unpleasant smell. Not sure if it’s because they have a open kitchen? But would be really nice if they can figure it out. Looking forward to coming back again!

A Japanese ramen restaurant with a really unique vibe. As you lift up the curtain and enter the main section of the restaurant, it's almost as if you've been transported to another dimension that completely contrasts the environment outside. The food itself was very heavy in flavour and definitely in portion size too. Unfortunately didn't get to try the cocktails but they sound amazing. Would definitely recommend coming to this place and experiencing it yourself

Great ramen! Probably the best Japanese ramen you can find in Melbourne. On the saltier side but still quite good. All other plates were good too. Great vibes, service and nice selection of drinks too.

Good ramen, I ordered the Kogashi miso ramen and it had a lovely charred garlic fragrance, the noodle was good but the soup is a little salty, the extra bamboo shoot was also a little too salty. Curry rice was delicious.

Stumbled in here looking for a quick dinner, and it ended up being the best surprise of our time in Melbourne. The ramen itself was good (not standout), but EVERY item on the appetizer list blew us away. The edamame and sukiyaki were especially strong. And the furniture design was pretty sweet. Will definitely be returning.

The clearly separated dining areas and ambiance uplifted the mood even before tasting the food. The reasonable prices matched with satisfying food quality were quite pleasing. Unfortunately, ordering the same dish resulted in vastly different flavors. Nonetheless, the appeal lies in being able to enjoy the same menu in different atmospheres for the same price.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Kogashi Shoyu Ramen and Tonkotsu Classic Ramen at Gogyo. The flavors were truly delicious and the overall experience was amazing. The restaurant’s decor also added to the pleasant atmosphere.

Nothing special tbh. Just an offshoot of ippudo in Australia and just like ippudo average ramen for not very average prices. More expensive than other places and not really worth it imo. Which is a shame cause some of the best tonkotsu I had in Japan was from another ippudo subsidiary.

Loved it!! My girlfriend took me to dinner at Gogyo today and it was such a pleasant experience that we just had to write down a review!! We had the calamari karaage, sashimi, Modern Tonkatsu and Kogashi miso Ramen. The karaage was so crunchy and delicious, definitely recommend. The sashimi was fresh and beautifully balanced in the sauces. Modern Tonkatsu was so delicious and the Kogashi was a strong umami flavoured to pair with the Tonkatsu. We also had the sobacha and black sesame ice cream which had a beautiful mochi taste and consistency. So delicious!! The ambience of this place was just so beautiful and the place felt like an authentic Japanese experience. What really sold our night was when Minny came up to us and wished myself a happy birthday. She ensured that everything was great, got our names and made our experience very personable. It’s the small details that count! Overall, definitely one of the better Japanese places in Melbourne. Would come again!

Professional staff, delicious food. Highly recommend the edamame and the tuna tataki, and the special modern tonkotsu (the extra egg is amazing!), but everything else we had was amazing too. Atmosphere is fantastic IF you get a seat behind the curtains - best to make a booking. Only turnoff was the tip option on the machine at the end. We don't tip in Australia, and it's particularly off-brand for Japanese.. please get rid of it!

Love the casual-chic atmosphere and the open concept kitchen where you can see the chefs cook your meal. Gogyo is known for their Kogashi style ramen which Involves a charred technique and I cannot recommend it enough. The soup base of the Kogashi Shoyu Ramen was fragrant and had so much depth. Delish starters. The black sesame ice cream had an intense black sesame nutty flavour which I loved, perfect finisher. Not a huge fan of the matcha dessert, the texture of the matcha jelly, cream and brown sugar syrup was a bit random for my palette. Also located in Surry Hills, Sydney!

Love Love Love it here. I actually prefer the little bits of everything to the ramen!! My favourites would have to be the prawn bao. holy moly I nearly cried it was so good. fluffy savoury and sweet, and always comes out nice and hot. The edamame are also savoury with a bit of spice which are excellent with a beer. Service is impeccable and the venue is very date night or mate night friendly. It feels fancy but accessible. Price wise it can be a bit expensive if you do go the lots of little things route. More expensive than other ramen but not overpriced. it is very very tasty so you won't be disappointed.

First time to try this place. i had pork katsu curry don and ramen. I’ve NEVER asked for extra curry in any other Japanese restaurants cuz I’ve never felt ‘not enough,’ but this place, served a little portion of curry sauce which was not enough to finish both rice and katsu. I asked for a little more the curry sauce, but they CHARGED me an extra $5. It was just curry sauce which did not include any proteins/veges/seafoods. I didn’t ask for extra rice or katsu haha. Not happy with this experience. Hope you guys will consider reassessing your portion sizes and pricing policies to better align with customer expectations.
