The Mitre Tavern has an interesting History and sitting upstairs almost felt like going back in time! It’s a got a nice romantic vibe to it! The wine menu by glass is limited but good options. They have an extensive bottle menu though. The staff are knowledgeable and can suggest good food options. All their house made sauces and mustards are Gluten Free which was great as most sauces contain Gluten so I’m normally limited to a Pepper sauce! Having something different was awesome. Also the Fillet Mignon I ordered was well cooked and the sauce was delicious so much so that I had to ask for more! The Button Mushrooms and Thyme were a nice starter. The highlight was having 2 Gluten Free Desserts that were delicious 😋 The chocolate mousse was excellent but the Creme Brulee was the best I’ve had anywhere in the world. The only negative part of the night was the waitress asking if we wanted to tip and had already added a tip to round off to 60 though we asked to round off to 50 and said the machine was working properly 🙄 Overall a great meal, great ambience and good staff barring the forced Tip. I’ll definitely be going back sometime.

Came here for some desserts and drinks, and a place to chill and talk amongst friends and was not disappointed. Has a nice authentic rustic vibe. The desserts were dirt cheap and I was surprised with its presentation. A nice variety of tap beer and single malt and blended whiskies on offer.

Nice pub to hang out with your colleagues and friends. The steak was great and the chips were very crispy and yum.

It has an English pub feel. Went here for lunch and was just heaving with people outside the courtyard and inside as well as 1st floor. It’s clean, inviting, good pub grub and drinks list. Staffs are helpful and food served freshly cooked and well seasoned in generous portions.

We came here for lunch on a Sunday. I had their BBQ Parma, pretty tasty and the chicken wasn't overly thick and not dry. The bacon on top was a nice addition to it. The portion was a good size. At $39.90 this is the most expensive Parma I've ever had. For dessert, we had the Chocolate Fondant and Classic Cheesecake, both extremely small sizes for $12.90 each. While they were both tasty, I found this to be very overpriced for the portion. For a pub style venue and the prices being charged for no table service, I give this place 4 stars. I would expect to pay these prices at a restaurant where they would at least take my order at my table.

This is the first time in my life I have eaten at one restaurant three days in a row. My first hattrick of Dining. I ordered the minute steak from the bar and it is unbelievably good. With Chips and salad and a great gravy. If you are in town make the effort and have a beer and steak there. The staff are amazing and made the 3 visits there an experience to remember

My favourite place in Melbourne at the moment, really good variety of beers, the hot wings are the best in the city, the staff is very friendly, the service is good and fast, the music is totally of my taste in a good volume... The atmosphere is cosy and friendly... Every corner is photogenic experience inside and outside

Nice atmosphere in this tavern. Staff is really nice and will help you in need. Fingerfood with beer was pretty good. Having a beer while chatting, I would choose this place gladly again.

This place is always bustling with people! Has an English pub feel to it, decent pub food and very relaxed chilled out vibes. Even though there's plenty of seats outside, you'll probably have trouble finding a spot at peak hours i.e. lunch time or close to after work hours. Can be a bit of a maze inside but they do have a lot of seats indoor too, just go for a wander around, depends on which entry door you walk into.

Okay this review is not about the drink as I didn't go for the alcohol eventhough it is a pub. I was there on a Monday night 6pm and wow, it was busy! Must be people going for drink after work.. we were there at the back of the building having a private section. I give it good review for the calamari that I had. I was impressed, I didn't think pub food can be good! The fish and chips though not something I would order here. And thanks for the salad!!

Nicely flavored and cooked steak. Environment was enjoyable. Pricing was on the higher end. The definition of "Porterhouse" steak here is quite different from the rest of the world... here it just means Sirloin which deviates from the general understanding as a T-bone with a larger-sized tenderloin. Seems the waiter here was not aware of this and advised customers not to use definition from the web. This made customers confused and felt unpleasant.

the entrance to the steakhouse was a bit difficult to find, especially in the evening when there is a lot of people in the tavern. the drink menu is only alcoholic, so my partner and I didn’t get any drinks as we needed to drive later. The presentation of the food and the interior of the steakhouse looked very good. The steak was cooked to our liking, however, it does come by itself so you need to order the sides separately. The way the waiter took our order insinuated that certain sides would be included, such as when we were ordering fries as a side, they said “did you want vegetables with those too?”, however, the vegetables were a completely different dish. The vegetables were kind of bland and were sitting in their own juices in the bowl. The oysters were really delicious and I would recommend them. After the meal, my partner and I didn’t feel that satisfied (like being full satisfied). The crème brûlée was really good, however for mine I found the melted sugar on top to be extremely thick, so the sweetness of that overrided the taste of the actual dessert. The berries were also on the wooden plate and was a bit difficult to incorporate into the dessert, so although it looks pretty it isn’t practical.

A wonderfully memorable fine dining experience. The atmosphere is quaint, pleasant and rich with presence. Staff are friendly and attentive. The food was delicious, steak tender greens cooked to perfection and the truffle chips…. Divine! The red merlot complimented the steak beautifully. Excellent have already recommended it!

Porterhouse Set (AUD $36.90) @ The Mitre Tavern. . Stopped by The Mitre Tavern for a quick dinner. An Austalian institution since 1868, the shingled pre-Victorian cottage houses a well-worn pub (and is the oldest standing structure in Melbourne). . The Mitre Tavern has seen many a business deal discussed over its worn wooden tables, and the financial and legal suits still frequent the place on week nights. . Ambience at The Mitre Tavern harkens back to the good ole days before the early stock market crash, with warm lighting and tightly packed wooden benches and tables arrayed around a bustling bar counter and entrance. . Service is just as friendly and affable, staff demonstrate good product knowledge on the menu, and cheerfully serve orders. The bartender is busily engaged with customers all night. . Food at The Mitre Tavern is classic British English and Australian cuisine, they're originally known as being a premier steakhouse, but have since expanded to offer well-executed pub grub and other comfort dishes. . I was hangry for a solid beef steak, and The Mitre Tavern surpassed expectations. This meal is served with a fresh Garden Salad, including crisp leaves of baby spinach, arugula, lettuce, chard, and mizuna, all with vegetal sweet bitter herbal flavour, alongside juicy fresh tomato with vegetal sweet notes. A refreshing garden salad. . The Steak-Cut Potato Chips are large, crisp outside and fluffy inside, with satisfying starchy salty savoury flavour. Loved their steak-cut potato chips, nicely filling. . The star is the Beef Steak 200g Porterhouse Cut. This porterhouse cut of grain-fed beef steak is thick, grilled to a perfect medium rare doneness, with a slight crisp char on the exterior, and tender juicy beef meat interior. Carries bold smoky meaty savoury salty flavour. . Served with a Traditional Brown Meat Gravy to complete, the thick gravy lending robust meaty salty savoury notes that enhance the dish. Excellent with or without the gravy.

Came here for an easy dinner a little while ago. Good atmosphere and reasonably size menu. I really wanted a steak and when I ordered it was told they only do medium-rare (not sure why)-but it was still delicious. Got a pint and sat down at an inside table but wasn’t clear which were reserved and which not, but wasn’t really a problem. The 200g porterhouse was very well priced ($32) and came with chips and a delicious pepper sauce that wasn’t too heavy, creamy, or spicy. Definitely recommend this place!

Honestly, one of the best pubs in Melbourne. A truly incongruous building in the middle of a bunch of office buildings, this is an old fashioned pub with some very well kept beers - the Carlton Draught is excellent! The little alley next to it is always packed with happy people. Great place for a beer.

Great old time pub vibes. If you're popping by for drinks then it's a good casual place. The food was okay. The halloumi fries and Guiness pie was good but the other dishes were okay for pub food. Please note that the review is based on the bistro food and not the steakhouse which is on the second floor.

It's been a while since we've been to a white-tablecloth restaurant, but since when did they charge for bread? True they never said it was complimentary, that was an assumption we had, from past experiences at other places. . 🥩Scotch Fillet w Truffle Butter 🥩Wagyu brisket 🐔Five spice chicken breast 🍟Steak fries 🍄Roasted mushrooms . The beer garden was tempting on this sunny afternoon, alas all the steaks are upstairs. The steak was good, though the melt in your mouth brisket was our favourite. The brined chicken was perfect too, everyone's favourite. All the food was really good. My companions first time trying "bitter water" lol ah yes sparkling water isn't for everyone. . Service was friendly, would recommend the food though still weirded out by the bread not being complementary and not disclosed, though we didn't ask. . 🥩 @themitretavern 📍Close to Collins x Queen St 💵 $215 including bread $7.30

Great to visit this very old charming pub again after many years, and to see it so well patronised, mostly office workers. A wonderful lively outdoor space and equally lively bar inside. It was midweek but felt like a Friday night! Staff very busy. Luckily we got a table for dinner. Food was typical pub fare. Visitors to Melbourne might enjoy finding this little piece of history tucked away amongst the multistories.

Went for dinner because I was craving a proper steak, and that’s exactly what I got. It perfectly satiated my craving. The steak itself (I got the filet mignon) was thick, perfectly cooked medium rare - incredibly tasty, tender, juicy meat with enough texture to have “melt in your mouth” feel, while still making you feel like you were eating steak. The baby potatoes on the side were the perfect accompaniment. Highly recommend visiting here for an exceptional steak

Pre booked for a function for 15 people. Great spot and a wise choice. We were up the top of the lane way and it felt like our own private function room. Staff very nice and friendly. Later we went upstairs to the steakhouse. I’ve been here several times and it never fails to disappoint. Food is amazing. I had steak with a prawn topping. Delicious. Everyone in our group was impressed. Thanks for looking after us.

The waiter and waitresses thought I was lost and expected me to order downstairs because I looked like I couldn't afford the food... The waygu and porterhouse steaks were amazing but there's only wine to drink from and not other options despite there being a tavern underneath the steak house.

Set in the hart of Melbourne this tavern started life as a hunting loadge in the 1800's. With modern clean feel the tavern is relaxing. Meals are available and I would recommend the fish and chips. There is an good selection of beers and plenty of room for groups in the outdoor area.

Not a bad pub for a quick lunch or for a drink after work. The service is good, staff are friendly. The food is okay, nothing fancy but it gets served quickly and tastes okay. It's not a super comfy place and isn't very "upscale" and has more of a stop by for a drink after work type feel to it.

I like the fact that this pub, and it clearly a pub rather than a bar, exists, as it is increasingly becoming towered over by the neighbouring high rises, but its dark and cosy, when my own personal taste is light and airy. The food is constantly good though; I frequent it quite a lot with a large crowd who always eat, and there have just been just a couple of poor dishes, so not a bad hit to miss ratio. Decent selection on taps and an extensive wine list. The outside area is usually packed. And disappointingly smokey.

Major Health Code Violation!!! DO NOT EAT HERE! We visited this restaurant last night (1/13/20) at 7 pm. The upstairs dining room was pretty empty. It definitely had a very old feel, not quite as nice as pics led us to believe, but they had good reviews and a good GF offering (I’m Celiac). We had a party of 4. Each ordered a main, then 3 sides (mushrooms, potatoes, blue cheese cauliflower) and a bottle of wine. We noticed two people across from us, nervously looking around and not eating their meal... seemed a bit odd. They got up and left shortly after we were seated and didn’t finish their food. Our food arrives, we’re now the only people in the upstairs area. Halfway through our meal, a girl at our table screams. We look over, and little mice have begun pouring out of the wall and area behind a corner booth located at the west end of the dining room. We counted over a dozen. They began running all over the dining room, below our table. We call out to waiter and he at first acts like he doesn’t know what we’re talking about, but says he believes us. He comes. Back a minute later and sees them all for himself. He begins chasing them off and kicking the wall... he tells us that “it’s a very old building with many holes, this is in no way a reflection of the cleanliness of the kitchen”. B.S!!If there are that many mice in your establishment in the daytime, you have a serious problem!! Hantavirus is a real and very dangerous thing.. these guys have got to be all over the food in the nearby kitchen. We stop eating, he asks us if we’d like more wine. We tell him no, we’d like the check and a mouse trap. At this point they seat two more people up stairs, they see mice and immediately get up and leave the restaurant. Another waiter returns with our check, asks us where the other people went, we tell him the saw the mice and left. He tells us he’s called an exterminator.. we look at the check... Its THE FULL CHECK! They actually changed us full price for mice ridden food/dining experience. Couldn’t even believe it. Our friend decides it’s not worth the battle and pays the bill so we can get out of that cesspool. If you’re in the area, save yourself the disgust and potential Illness. Do not eat at this establishment. Unless you’re fond of mice, Vermin and god knows what other kind of communicable diseases they’re tracking in. The worst dining experience I’ve ever had and after visiting 56 countries, that’s saying something!

I have frequented both the Tavern (downstairs) and the Steakhouse (upstairs) several times, both are five star experiences. I believe the steaks are some of the nicest in Melbourne and the extensive wine list and service match. Downstairs the tavern offers a boisterous, enjoyable atmosphere, both inside and outside. Alex and the team are always professional, friendly and entertaining, great options for formal meetings or important catchups as well as a casual beer with a mate.

A sensational experience with kind, quick service. The selection of steaks are great and cooked to perfection. The whole feel of the restaurant is also amazing and adds to the feel of the overall experience. I don't necessarily think the prices are worth it for the quality, but it's definitely an extremely nice place to visit, none the less.

Amazing dinner up in the steakhouse. Three of us went, with two of us getting the share plate and the other getting the gourmet sausages and mash. Everything was amazing, and I'd definitely recommend getting the share plate if there's two of you wanting steak, as it comes with chips and a salad as well. Had the chocolate mousse for dessert which was delectable as well. Only thing that would have made it better would be if the mushy peas were made the more traditional way, instead of being still left whole, but would 100% visit next time I'm in Melbourne 😁

The upstairs restaurant definitely had an upmarket, classy vibe when entering. It had a gentle noise of being busy but well mannered company and starting off getting out jackets taken was very nice indeed. Everyone in the group really enjoyed their steaks, the sticky date pudding had a delicious sauce with some brandy basket and the red wine we chose with the meal was amazing. Then there are the prices. It is certainly the most expensive restaurant I have been to in a long time, but given the up market angle they are going for that is fine. I ordered the share plate for myself with 2 steaks, chips and salad so that I wouldn’t be still hungry afterwards. The rib eye was pretty good for a medium steak, the mushroom sauce was the best I’ve ever had, the chips and salad were both very tasty, but the porterhouse was dry and a disappointment. I would order it again and hope for better results, but a $128 dish in this type of restaurant should have been better. If the menu prices were less, the quality would match and this review would be 5 stars, but there will be better steak restaurants in the same price range. The staff were very friendly, polite and respectful and I am sure I will be back as I had a great night with my friends, but I will have lower expectations around the steaks next time.

We were there on a busy Friday evening. It was lively, and we had a good time. There was a good selection of beers on the tap. It is a popular spot for a good reason.

In middle of skyscrapers, in an alley is this old small tavern serving beers and smallish menu of different foods. It is really cool gem. I got myself a steak with best potato I have ever eaten. Minor negative came from initial confusion of ordering the food from the bar. The garlic bread side that I ordered was bit of meh. But did hit the spot still.

Situated in one of Melbourne's alleyways, The Mitre Tavern provides ample space both outside and inside. It's a great spot for a pub meal and attracts a large number of office workers. I highly recommend the Parma, though the steak can be hit-or-miss during peak hours. The staff are friendly and always ready to assist.

Daniyeru's Detailed Review: Customer Service 5/5 *Greeted politely, seated in a sufficient manner. Order is placed via QR code. Ordered the Hahn Super Crisp, however Gluten Free came out instead. Waiter thought they were the same thing. I still drank it, it wasn't bad for what it's worth. Food 3/5 *Ordered the Burger: Bun was like an oversized cowboy hat sitting on top of the tiny beef patty, which was half the size of the buns. Basics of a burger is ratio. This was all off. Quality itself was good. But the patties need to be on a 1:1 ratio in terms of size. * * * Value 3/5 *Priced at a more expensive pub grub food, it's still great option if you're around the area. Probably better to go when it's pub time. Atmosphere 5/5 *Buzzing and vibing and lots of space in a historical building. Worth a shot Overall *Burger could be improved, but the other food my work mates ordered looked generous and everyone else liked their food.

Very cool venue. Looks like an country style pub surrounded by tall buildings in the middle of the city. Great indoor and outside seating. Awesome atmosphere expensive though worth it.

Nice cozy venue. Their little Cevapi bar snack things were brilliant. Definitely the best snack menu item ever.

One of first ever hotels in Melbourne, the Mitre Tavern is able to provide a solid Parma for anyone looking for a good feed. The bartenders also provide excellent customer service.
