This state library is definitely a must-see attraction when you are in Victoria, either you are local residents or tourists. I went to this state library many times before but just for studying and reading at the ground level. Dont know why I didnt consider visit this whole library - such a big mistake. Until recently, my best friend from Sydney came down and wanted to come here for visit; this gave us the chance to really discover this wonderful library properly for the first time (thanks Sharon 😘). The building is like a combined gallery, museum and library all together. Magnificent architecture especially the dome. You definitely must come here for a visit. Its on level 3 but best place for photo would be in level 4. No need to go up to the top on level 6 as you can only access a very small area, its harder to take photo here also and long queue for the lift too. Huge space with different sections for kid, general reading, newspapers, studying. Lots of projects and exhibitions are currently on including World book 2022 and Ned Kelly - super cool. Can easily spend couple of hours here. Very friendly and helpful staffs too. Overall, such a great place for visit in Victoria. Cant recommend enough!

Should be one of the must visit place in Melbourne. Gorgeous architecture and fantastic free exhibition. Currently showing "World Books" with some books over 4000 years old. The exhibition is on leave 4. Make sure you visit the Dome on level 3. Then take the lift up to level 6 for photo.

A beautiful library in the heart of the city. We dropped by before beginning our day and to avoid the crowd and disturbing too many people. The library is conveniently located near multiple tram stations, making it easy for visitors to access. The library itself is a magnificent building, with a stunning domed reading room that is sure to inspire anyone who enters it. There are small exhibits around the library so be sure to have a walk around!

Amazing place with a great history and interesting building. You can go to the dome on level 4 and then go further up to level 5 and 6 at the top and take excellent pictures of the building. This is a very large public building with a huge selection of books and other items for you to enjoy. This is one of Melbourne’s attractions so if you like something different and historic, this is one of the places to visit.

This was arguably the best looking library I’ve ever been to. There are plenty of desks for self studying. Massive collections of books to read. Outstanding views on every floor of the library. It’s basically a museum within a library but was done very well. The only thing to note is that it may take quite awhile getting up and down as there are limited elevators availabilities. Definitely worth a visit if you’re into something more on the quiet side

We visited this beautiful library and enjoyed our visit very much. Besides the dome area, there are several other library sections, including art exhibits. The dome area not only has grand architecture but also well used old chairs and tables. A must visit in Melbourne.

Visited the library on the 18th of Sept 2023. I am very impressed after learning that it was designed and built in 1856, and the great restoration done to modernize it, making it a great place to learn and visit. You definitely need to visit the Dome. Simply fantastic design and the impressive dome and interior. You could walk up the stairs or lift to have a view of the dome and the reading areas. A must visit venue while visiting Melbourne.

This is one of the most iconic historic sites in Melbourne!!! Also one of the first iconic landmarks which I stick around when I first came to this city...it has a lot of stories, very beautiful architecture, it's also a museum and lots of stories about Ned Kelly!!! A great building rich in history. My favourite place when needing a different study place. Lots of fun exhibits. Recently, I took my kids to some Lego building activities around the kids centre in the building. One small issue is they don’t loan out their collection of books.

A beautiful old building and can see why people have functions here. A lot of places to read or study and though all quiet, some less formal than others. Asked staff member at entrance if they conducted tours. She said no. And further in I see sign, gather here for tours. Of course. Also nice gallery area, a room devoted to Ned Kelly and an exhibition on how we have changed focusing on equal rights, the 8 hour day and because this is Melbourne, coffee!

Such a beautiful and important building steeped in history and cultural importance. You could easily spend a whole day here even if you weren't planning on reading any books! There are multiple study spaces, reading rooms, exhibitions and even a dedicated children's area. The Ned Kelly armour is presented very well and the layout of the Jerilderie letter is worth a read. A visit to the Dome is a must and looking down on the reading room is inspiring! There are regular exhibitions which are expertly curated and presented. Free to visit and in the centre of the city, not to be missed if you're in Melbourne visiting.

I would have gladly rated the Victorian State Library five stars, but for the rude librarian I happened upon when enquiring about becoming a member of the library. Never before have I been challenged with why I wish to join a library, and her attitude from the first to the final word of our interaction was hostile. With libraries focusing more and more on customer service and community, you'd think all librarians would be expected to display excellent customer service at all times. Despite this, the older sections of the library are quite stunning, while the new sections are relatively pedestrian, and really not worth a second look. If visiting the library, just go and see the dome, because that is the only redeeming feature.

Fantastic library. Had just undergone a huge multi-million dollar renovation. With new spaces and meeting rooms for the public. The large main library is a Victorian masterpiece and is well worth a visit. Love this place to work and study. Right in the centre of town, so also we’ll located for all the city has to offer.

I’m so glad I came and explored the public library because the architecture is just stunning. The library features a rich catalogue of literature to browse as well as showcasing some stunning art. I would definitely recommend a wander to the top floor to view the dome and the beautiful design elements in that room.

One of the best place to go if you visit Melbourne. State Library of Victoria was one of the first free public library in the world when it opened in 1856, still remains a great place to study or just spend some time. Definitely check the LaTrobe Reading room and Ned Kelly’s original armour kept in the library. Heaps of books are available to read or browse in the library.

We had just visited the Melbourne Gaol and decided to go into the library to see the Ned Kelly exhibit. The library is a beautiful structure and is very nice inside. The Ned Kelly exhibit is brilliant and his steel armour outfit is on display here. It’s free to see and we’ll worth seeing if you are in the area.

THIS IS HOW LIBRARIES SHOULD BE. If I am living near the area, I would always stay in this place and just read and read. This library looks like something that is taken out of a Harry Potter Novel. It is just majestic and awe-inspiring. Most importantly, it is easy to visit this place, just ride the free tram and walk to here. It is definitely worth the visit.

A library is built on dreams and ideas. Add a beautiful reading room, and a world class collection, and you have a thoughtful and exciting library. If you're traveling with the kids check out Ned Kelly's armour and rifle. And a great display of his exploits. Worth a long visit. If you're not locked down.

The library exterior was stunning. And the infrastructure was good. I have seen many movies being shot here. Art pieces are for display In a floor in the library where the ornament used by the Australian pristine r Ned Kelly is preserved. And there were tonnes of books available. There was a book exhibition going on where lot of ancient books and form of texts were for display. Not sure if it is kept permanently. Check on the website for more details before visiting. Worthy place to visit.

This spot is a wonderful hub for studying or remote work, and it also serves as a convenient meeting point, especially for families. The addition of a dedicated children's area, complete with a small play area and reading nook, makes it an ideal place for parents with kids. Notably, the children's area is thoughtfully equipped with restrooms and a nappy changing room for added convenience. For international travellers, the unique dome design of the place is sure to catch your attention. Moreover, they provide free water refill stations, an economical way to stay hydrated. With plenty of seating available, it's a great spot to take a break and relax. Whether you're looking to study, work, or simply enjoy the ambience, this versatile place has something for everyone.

It is an iconic and historic library of Victoria state, a recommended place for everyone. It serves different types of visitors: students, tourists, artists, architects, photographers, etc. The library holds a great collection of books and exhibits. It also offers a wide range of desks setup for diverse study preferences. The architect and interior design are top notch. You will be definitely impressed. The building exterior is also updated recently with color lights for some special events. Hopefully the opening time will be extended more in the future.

Visited this beautiful library during my visit to Melbourne. No ticket needed, it’s completely free, which is a huge plus. Very accessible by trams or train (walking distance to the train station) with many shops and malls nearby. They have small galleries inside, which is also beautiful. Other than sightseeing, you are also free to sit around and read the available books inside (which is a lot). Both the inside and the outside are beautiful and worth a snap.

I absolutely love spending time in the State Library forecourt. On a warm summer's day there's nothing better than an iced coffee or a delicious snack from one of the many local establishments nearby. Additionally, I am very lucky that I live opposite the library so I am able to enjoy it every single day!

The State Library Victoria is the main library of the Australian state of Victoria. Located in Melbourne, it was established in 1854 as the Melbourne Public Library, making it Australia's oldest public library and one of the first free libraries in the world. It is also Australia's busiest library and, as of 2018, the fourth most-visited library in the world.

The State Library of Melbourne is an impressive and beautiful building that is well worth a visit. The architecture of the building is truly amazing, with its grand marble halls, high ceilings and beautiful domes. The library is home to a vast collection of books, manuscripts, and other materials that document the history and culture of Melbourne and Australia. The exhibits on display were interesting and well-curated. The library also offers a variety of services and resources for researchers, students and the general public. The atmosphere inside the library is quite peaceful and serene, it's a great place to read, study or just to spend some time. The library's location is also great, it's in the heart of the city and it's easy to access by foot, bike or public transportation. I highly recommend visiting the State Library of Melbourne, not only for its impressive architecture and historical significance, but also for the opportunity to explore its vast collection and enjoy the serene atmosphere.

Shot a wedding video here on July 1st 2023. Pretty nice location for a wedding :) EXCELLENT: -historic, iconic location. -beautiful interior and atmosphere. NOT-SO-GOOD: -reading room surfaces have not been dusted so there are deep layers of dust where the bride and groom were formally married (on the desk surfaces there is dust caked everywhere). Very visible so I'm not sure why it's not cleaned away. -toilets in the front function room are poorly maintained with partially attached lid. Someone might have an accident on them one day unfortunately ☠️

This is the second time I visited the state library and it has become more touristy since my last visit 3 years ago. I was greeted by the staff when I entered the lobby - which is not something that I would expect or consider necessary for a library. A children centre is nice but can we please make sure that children stay in the designated area? Would really appreciate a child-free and reading-friendly environment

I thought it was the most beautiful library in the world. In addition, I envied the people who studied or read books in the library. Even though there were many visitors, it was quietly and well maintained by guard. If I had time, I also wanted to read the book. The elevator to the top floor was a bit inconvenient because the waiting line was long. As a country of immigrant origin, the Shakespeare stained glass was impressive.

Great place to get away from the crowds and have a rest or do some reading/study. They have all the old newspapers on microfilm going back to the 1800s. Lots of resources available here if you're into genealogy and want to trace your family background. There's also an art gallery and a reading room, study room, conference room, toilets etc.

I recently had the chance to visit the State Library Victoria in Melbourne, and let me tell you, it was an absolute delight. As someone who loves getting lost in a good book, I was immediately taken aback by the sheer scale of the place. It's massive! But not just big, it has this grand, old-world feel to it, with beautiful architectural details and these stunning reading rooms that feel straight out of a movie. I spent hours just wandering around, browsing the shelves and soaking in the atmosphere. They have such an incredible collection, from historical documents to modern bestsellers, and everything in between. I even stumbled upon a special exhibit showcasing some of Australia's literary history, which was fascinating. But beyond the books, what really struck me was the energy of the place. There were people of all ages and backgrounds, quietly reading, working on laptops, or attending talks and events. It felt like a true community hub, a space where everyone was welcome to learn, explore, and be inspired. Overall, my visit to the State Library Victoria was an enriching and memorable experience. Whether you're a bookworm like me or simply someone who appreciates history and culture, I highly recommend checking it out. It's a true Melbourne gem.

I visited the State Library recently for a function in its Conversation Room. A beautiful function space with each wall a different style, creating quite a striking impression. Facilities are clean and nice. The library space itself is beautiful, set under the huge dome. Green brass lamps and reading desks, plus books are free to access for a quiet read. Climb the stairs for a magnificent view looking down into the library.😉

Haven't been to a library in many years, was encouraged to go back by Instagram's the Library Grown Up. The architecture & dome is so beautiful from every angle, if you can climb up to the top, or take the lift for the view. Also don't miss Ned Kelly's armour on display. You can see the bullet marks that took him down.

State Library Victoria is a bookworm's paradise! 📚 The library vibes are a mix of old-school charm and modern comfort. The majestic reading room is like Hogwarts for grown-ups, and the Dome is an Insta-worthy masterpiece. Whether you're a hardcore reader or just want a quiet escape, this place is a top pick. When visiting Melbourne, the State Library Victoria needs to be at the top of the list. Australia's oldest library and one of the first free libraries in the world, this extensive and impressive building has been looking after the reading needs of Victorians for almost 170 years. While there are many library and gallery spaces on the large site, the La Trobe Reading Room is truly the icing on the cake. While many quietly study, you can explore the library shelves here and slowly make your way up to the very top of this huge domed space. We were also fortunate to bump into Judy, the Philanthropy and Brand Manager as we were making our way around the reading room. Here are some photos of our visit... Do yourself a favour and spend some quiet time here. We will be back soon :-)

I visited the Victoria Library last Saturday and was impressed with the extensive collection of books and resources available. The staff were helpful and knowledgeable, making it easy to navigate the library and find what I was looking for. The atmosphere was peaceful and conducive to studying or reading. I liked very much that they allocated sections for study and work with free and fast internet and free computers. It is really a wonderful gesture from the Victorian government. 💯👏

A must-visit if you are in the Melbourne CBD area. There are free exhibits in the galleries that can be very interesting and informative. You can start your visit by checking out what's on at the computer terminals located at the information section. There's currently a beautiful exhibition on the history of the book, perfect for a bibliophile like me. Make sure you take a good look at the famous dome and take a seat underneath it.

One of my favourite places in Melbourne, especially because it's very rare to find anything in Melbourne that's free. Only bad thing is it's often packed full of students so it can be hard to find a desk. While they're upgrading it at the moment, it would be good to put in more study tables with power points in all the large open spaces, like the room with the artworks on the walls.

This library is huge and very good in terms of space and the facilities they are providing in the heart of city. One can easily went there after reaching Melbourne central. Its in front of Melbourne central. This library not only provides books to read but also give lots of interesting facts regarding the history of the state. One can easily chill outside also where lots of people spend quality time and there is big chess also in the outside gate and you can also play with it if you are interested in that. Overall experience in and out was very good and will surely visit again, as it very near to my uni RMIT. And helps me a lot in terms of everything:- books, people and getting peaceful vibes.

(Translated by Google) It's more like a museum than a library, and it's nice. I think it's great to be able to use these places for free. There's plenty of room to relax, there's also a cafe and a souvenir shop. I didn't know Melbourne's attractions. Be sure to visit Melbourne. Am a library fanatic. The architecture of this library is just beyond words. The photos don't do it justice. Definitely a must visit place if exploring Melbourne especially if you're into libraries and museums etc. The collections inside are fascinating and one can easily be lost in the grandeur for a couple of hours.

The Dome is so grand it's worth sitting there to read and soak up the atmosphere. Old wooden furniture and comfy seats. It does get a bit noisy though with so many tourists so not ideal for serious study. There are other great rooms for studying. Lots of power points to plug a laptop in. Toilets were a little far from the study areas.

Very big, has alot of books and facilities, recharge stations, powers stations, private rooms and computers. Also free WiFi is great to have as mobile reception is limited inside. Unfortunately self service is very limited and you need to talk to a librarian to look for books, book rooms etc. Also the anime and comics section is very small with only some manga and some educational books. Some rooms are air-conditioned while others you can hear the aircon but not feel it. Too truly be 5 stars it needs to add more culture and add self service stations.

Great collections to explore. Lots of facilities for study and reading, including a beautiful - Indiana Jones/Ghostbusters feeling reading room under the dome. Absolutely brilliant exhibition on the history of books with some killer specimens. Easy to get lost in your thoughts here.

A beautiful 19th century public library which is of very high standards and open for enthusiastic individuals to gather and explore their interests. The exhibition regarding history and astronomy further elevates the spaces. Please be aware of skaters and adventure sport activities while climbing the steps to the entrance. This place sure has changed from when I was a uni student almost 20 years ago. Took the kids here and they love the children’s reading area with a tonne of books, nice spaces to read and beautiful interior design/architecture. Definitely recommend it as a great place for the family to spend time if you’re on a budget.

Lucky are these kids who can come visit, work, read, do research in this beautiful library. At this age reading books, going inside the book you read… dream & imagine the characters are such a thing of the past. Reading has lost its touch & being a teacher to encourage children to read is such an uphill task.. all eaten by the Internet. Parents, teachers, school & the students must be inculcated the habit of reading otherwise all books & libraries will loose its charm.

Love the library, always clean, tidy and full of history. Sometime just love to sit here to chill and do my editing. Very relaxing, wifi and power aren't a problem here. Really a mindful perfect place to be here.

This is a must-visit for those who are interested in culture. There's a small Readings bookstore at the back and the building itself looks more like a modern museum than a library. Of course, I went to look at the famous Dome and it is so pretty. I'd love to study here. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. My favorite is the art exhibit in one of the halls. We saw some really good multimedia art by indigenous artists. I really loved it. This place is free entry.

Such a good place to spend a time in a cold rainy day🥰 this building is permeated with history and majesty! The architecture is amazing, it's more than just a library, it's like a real historical museum📚

  • 5/5 Min K. 8 months ago on Google
This library has a history of over 200 years. Wooden chairs and desks were showing us their history. Contemporary people and trande setters work on i-pad in old places was a meeting between modern times and history. Many people were studying hard in this wonderful place. They were also one of the great sight.

State Library Victoria is a truly magnificent library. It's clean, well-organized, and the signage is clear. The staff are always friendly and helpful. It's a popular spot, both in the garden and the reading rooms, so it can get a bit noisy. If you prefer a quieter reading environment, bringing headphones is a good idea. Despite the occasional noise, it's a grand and welcoming place where you can immerse yourself in books, history, and knowledge. It's a must-visit for anyone with an appreciation for libraries and their rich offerings.

I'm not really a fan of libraries but this is okay for something to do in Melbourne CBD. The Ned Kelly exhibition and art displays were pretty cool. If you're lucky you can look up your last name hall of records and follow your history. They unfortunately didn't have mine but they had my partners.. at least the lighting was good to take pictures 😅 would probably take about 10 - 15 mins to walk around. They have a cute cafe and gift shop for souvenirs! Free entry! Restrooms!

Wow is the first word that I would use to describe this library. It brings most others to shame. There is just a huge place to read and get work done. And there was even a hidden chess board where my partner and I had a intense game of chess before an onlooker came and told my partner she had mate in 2

It's one of my favorite places in the city. The building is fantastic, have services such as internet access, books, computers, and meeting rooms. It is a very quiet and cozy place, it is open every day from 10.00 a.m. to 06.00 p.m.
