I have been following Backwards Gallery for a couple of years due to an ROA exhibition I noticed online, however I only made the trip to Melbourne and the gallery for the first time last week. I was greeted warmly by Emerson at the desk and was blown away by the two shows they were exhibiting and just the high level of curation and friendliness by the team. I had a great chat about art with Emerson and I love that physical brick and mortar galleries like this still exist in an age where so much is just online. Would recommend visiting this gallery and supporting this particular local gallery to anyone.

A great space conveniently tucked away in a mini laneway in the back streets of Collingwood .

backwoods gallery has always been a great place to see amazing art - and I refer to both the local and the international artists they bring in and exhibit there. It is one of my favourite galleries in Australia and the best in the Collingwood/Fitzroy area. Dean Sunshine Land of Sunshine street art blog.

I love Backwards Gallery! I generally avoid going on opening nights of exhibitions due to sensory processing issues. When I do go, whoever is there is friendly, attentive, happy to answer questions and share information. I’ve been following Backwards Gallery for many years now, and the artists they show tend to be artists I already know and adore or ones I am genuinely excited to have been introduced to!

Great setting with interesting exhibitions that are well advertised on website/ insta or if you subscribe. Tom goes above and beyond to show you around and make you feel special. Good sales and openings! Above a great bar/ cafe too. Well worth a visit to see this smaller art space (quality not quantity!)

Sooooooo crowded... We were there for an event that consisted of 26 different studios, so there's that. But man. I'm sure day to day itd be quaint and nice. Edit: the stars don't properly represent how I feel about the venue, I love the idea and the space, just too successful of an event :P keep up the good work!

Gallery owned by Japanese contemporary artist. He introduces many great artists from Japan. Bit hard to find since there is no signs on streets.

Backwoods gallery is a bricks and mortar institution housing some of the finest Australian cultural artefacts I have ever set my eyes upon. It was more than a pleasure to finally make my way to this Collingwood-based art gallery in a brief moment of respite during my most recent pilgrimage to Melbourne. Backwoods gallery is quite literally back in the middle of the 'woods' of Collingwood. It is, as I have often found with such gemstones of artistic accomplishment, a little off the beaten track. It lacks any obvious signage or the hordes of riff-raff that one might expect at a major State gallery. Nonetheless my pilgrimage here was undoubtedly the most pleasant moment of my Backwoods experience. As I stepped onto the pavement at the listed street address, I was visually accosted by a vision from above. A trio of beautiful, bare-skinned women had descended from the seventh tier of heaven onto the most incredible medium of some kind of acrylic paint on brick. Let me say, that while I outwardly exclaimed to my companions that the sight was a morally depraved and distasteful vision, I was most impressed, confronted, and energised by the ladies before me. Such brazen art as this is a rarity in this day and age and I thoroughly hope that your fine gallery shall grow and propagate. Kind regards, Mr G Patel.

Great gallery. I have seen more great shows than I can count on my fingers and toes, in fewer years than I have fingers or toes
