Dowth the Fairy Mound of Darkness is about the same size as Newgrange and Knowth and was built in the same period over 5,000 years ago. The mound was subjected to a very unprofessional excavation in 1847, two passage tombs were discovered but the mound was severely damaged in the process. The passage tombs are much less spectacular than Newgrange or Knowth with shorter passages and lower roofs. Both are on the western side of the mound, they are referred to as Dowth North and Dowth South. The Dowth North passage is 14 metres in length; the chamber is cruciform in shape with an annex off the right hand recess, the chamber roof is corbelled and is 3 metres high. Dowth South - Passage Entrance The Dowth South passage is only 3.5 metres in length with a simple circular chamber and a single recess to the right; the original roof collapsed long ago and has been replaced by a concrete roof. Dowth South is aligned to the setting sun of the winter solstice; the setting sun illuminates the passage and chamber about 3pm on the days around the winter solstice.

Passage Tomb, not as big as the others. Small, has nice views of New Grange and the hills around you

Ruins of a passage grave. This is the only one of three passage tombs in the are that is accessible by car. The other two require bus rides to visit. This one is a ruin whereas the other two are preserved. This is worth the quick visit and walk around to admire the countryside and think about the ancient people that built these massive graves.

I love this place it's free to enter but not the easiest to get into as you need to cross some gates but so worth it. Fantastic view from the top of the monument and be amazed by the history of this area. Make sure to cross the field and have a look at Netterville Manor which was once an almshouse and mother and baby home. Visit the adjoining grave yard and ancient church .

Remains of 5000 year old passage tomb, which unfortunately has been degraded by quarrying of dome stones, and is currently covered with vegetation, including trees. While two passages have been opened they are not accessible. However it is still an interesting wander and some of the massive base stones are visible.

The area is beautiful but if you're trying to see the nearby mounds this is not the place to go. We were directed here by Google while looking for Brù na Bòinne. This mound is closed because the cap stone fell in and collapsed the mound years ago. You can pull over and park on the side of the road then walk around the mound to see but there is no access below. It's worth a visit if you're in the area but it's nothing special. Head to the visitors center on the otherside of the river for a tour of the ancient mounds.

Such a peaceful place. We passed it by though as no sign post at its actual location. Can just imagine what it could be like if it was more excavated. Magical

Amazing place. So bizarre that it's just been left alone. I really think it needs a bit of love and protection. Nevertheless, amazing.

100m walk to this place and well worth it, walk around clockwise to see the perimeter stones and the carvings on stone 51. Keep going around to get a sense and feel of this ancient place.

Rough and small, not as impressive as the other big passage ways but it leaves some imagination and is open for visiting without tickets

Loved this peaceful visit. We were there 45 minutes on a Sunday and were the only people! We stood on top enjoying the view while the kids ran the fields and explored. It was wild and beautiful and peaceful.

We visited Dowth on the occasion of visiting Newgrange. We just asked shuttle driver to drop us on the road very close to the megaliths. It's a place with a special energy. It's bit abandoned. I've seen gorse was cut down and put on the side of the cairn. I hope one day it will be taken care off like newgrange. You can spot beautiful carvings on the other site of the stone in front of the entrance.

I loved it!!! (Though the most existing might have been the unalived sheep lying beneath it because only the eyes and neck were missing)

An amazing historical landmark! It’s a must see if you are into landmarks, history etc. Megalithic tomb with visible sun markings made by someone in prehistoric times.

Beautiful, special energy. I am very grateful to Gerry of the main Newgrange site to have guided me to Dowth.
