We went to New Grange on a Saturday from Dublin for a day trip as it’s only around 1.5 hours away. The tickets to see this place was free although you have to book them online and there are limited tours. We opted for an afternoon tour. I think there are a few tours every few hours. Once you reach Newgrange, they arrange another vehicle to take you the actual monument. Now this place is ancient and dating almost around 4000years ago. There was a person/tour guide who was explaining the history of New Grange. You can only see the Winter solstice on a lottery basis which is pretty cool. Once the tour ended we went to the museum. There is also free parking and a cafe at the premises. Overall a fantastic day trip and a must visit place!

We had a lovely tour around Newgrange but we're unable to go into the Monuments due to Covid which was a pity, but still amazing to be able to see the dedication if the craftsmen who not only built them, but also restored it. It was a lively introduction by our guide to the Spirals and also the stories behind how the monuments came about. We were there on a beautiful day and had the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine and wonderful scenery. Recommended visit for families especially if the Monuments are all open for a visit.

Really good! Good tour guides, and the monument is cool. It is however a tight squeeze on the inside of the Newgrange, so we aware of that if you’re a bigger person. The walks around the area is easy.

I had forgotten about pre-booking this but as we were staying in the area we thought we would try and see if there was any chance, maybe a cancellation could mean available spots. Luckily we did, as the lovely staff said they also do outside only tours and there were a few free spots. The site is amazing and the information from the guides is very interesting. The visitor centre is also worth looking around and a good cafe while you wait for the tour. Definitely kicked myself we couldn't go inside but still better than missing out altogether

New-Grange - is an ancient structure covered by land and white quartz pebbles as the Greek letter "Omega" of diameter 85 meters diameter and a height of 11 meters, which according to even the official version of history is created more than 5,000 years ago, it is older than the famous Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. New-Grange - is the temple of the Sun, in the depths of which for over 5000 years old and till nowdays in the pitch darkness the Light is born: the bossom of the Earth receives a ray of the Sun. In the shortest days of the year, days of the winter solstice, since the 19th to the 23rd of December, at dawn through a small inlet sunbeam penetrates the New-Grange. It slides along a narrow 12-foot underground passage, the height of which gradually increases from 1.5 meters to 3 meters and reaches the inner room, the crypt in the form of a trefoil with niches where there are rock-hewn oval bowl. Sunbeam snatches of darkness altar stone with a triple helix for only 14-21 minute.

Excellent tour of both Knowth and Newgrange. Guides were very well informed and professional, so interesting. A must see if visiting Dublin. We were lucky there was room on next tour , wait of 30 mins, but definitely pre booking is recommended especially in season. Visitors centre extremely informative with replica of inside mound. You cannot take photos inside Newgrange.

Newgrange. I can't believe this amazing neolithic monument built circa 3200 bc. At least 1000years before The Great Pyramid at Giza. Is only one hours drive from Dublin, and I haven't been to visit sooner. This burial chamber has so much in common with the pyramids and the burial of "kings"is mind blowing. Anyone with an interest in ancient history will have to see these monuments. It is a fabulous day's excursion. To be able to walk inside this sacred place. Also demonstration of what occurs on the winter solstice when the sun enters the chamber. Wish I could have scored it 6 stars. Charles Galvin

Amazing place. We missed to book tickets to get inside tomb so had to take the shuttle tour and museum. With the shuttle we can get an outside view of the tomb. Our tour guide Siobhan was lovely explained the history behind it and how it might have made use in the past. It also happens to be one of the UNESCO world heritage site. Pleasant sceneries and they had nice museum where they have replica of the portion of the tomb. Must visit place ;) N.B OPW priced the tickets reasonably but the cafeteria inside the new grange is really expensive.

A truly wonderful experience. The guided tour was very informative, and the experience of being inside this 5000-year-old neolithic monument was breathtaking. You somehow feel that you become a part of a very special place in human civilisation. The exhibition is very creatively designed and answers all the questions one may have about this place, and the cafeteria and an observation deck are good add-ons. The staff at the reception was very nice and somehow arranged for us a tour though we didn't book online and almost exited the place to go back home. They surely saved the day for us, and just to make it extra special, they gave it as a compliment. Completely blown away by their kind gesture 🙏. Will surely come back again, and with pre-book tickets this time 😀

If you enjoy history attractions on vacation, this is the visit for you! This World Heritage Site tours both prehistoric sites of Newgrange and Knowth with a maximum of 24 people on the tour. You park at the designated visitor center and a bus takes you to both sites. Allow time to go through the museum before your tour (it closes at 6pm) and take photos in the makeshift passage tomb as photos are not permissible when you enter the Newgrange passage tomb. Be aware that the Newgrange passage tomb is tight and in a confined space; ducked heads and holding small purses in front of you is required. The guide also turns off the lights in the tomb to simulate the light at the winter solstice. We could have had more time at Knowth as there are lots of smaller satellite passage tombs around Knowth, though you cannot enter any of the sites at Knowth; there was plenty to look at though! In total, we spent 3-3.5 hours at this attraction. Highly recommend if you enjoy prehistoric art and history, like Stonehenge and the pyramids of Egypt. This place is older than those! I think I actually preferred this site to Stonehenge due to less people and more to see/do at the sites. You have to get tickets well in advance to make the tour; recommend setting an alarm for yourself to get tickets when they open 30 days before the date you wish to attend. Bathrooms are at both stops as well as the visitor center. Visitor center has a cafe and gift shop. The sites are among farms, so be prepared for cow crossings (this happened while we were on the bus; we enjoyed this and found it funny as the cows misbehaved a little, ha!). The entrance is gated and you also cannot just walk up to the sites at any time of day or night.

I had been here on a school your as a child over 30 years ago. Newgrange has always held a place in my heart since then. I recently brought my wife here she was amazed. This place will put you in awe of the accomplished skills of our ancestors. A must see for anyone remotely interested in a glimpse of the past.

Beautiful place to visit on a sunny day with kids. Remember to purchase your tickets online or at the visitor center as they do not sell tickets on the site. You also have the option to travel to the site by their bus or can take your own car.

Great visit. The new visitor center is super nice with lots of great information about this marvelous site. It's really amazing to see how well preserved the site is and to spend time pondering what all of the symbols could mean, the purpose of the site could've been, and how humans 5,000 years ago could've constructed such a site with such precision to align exactly with the winter and summer solstice. Like... I'm not saying it was aliens, but it was definitely ANCIENT ALIENS 👽🤣😂

Am mazing and unique sightseeing in Dublin. Its older than the pyramids in Egypt. It is a 5000 years old passage tomb which is know for the winter chamber illumination at the sunrise for about 6 min. The chamber is illuminated for 6 days a year from 18 of December till 23 which considered at that time to start a new year and Christmas celebration. The archeologists have found some humans remaining and they buried their ashes inside. It is worth to visit but you have to arrive to the visiting site to get the tickets and there are bus which takes you to the different passage tombs.

A fascinating historical place that is well worth a visit. We visited on the date of the winter solstice 2021 and booked tickets well in advance. The visitor centre has excellent displays and an lots of information about the site. Unfortunately due to Covid the actual passage tomb located in the mound was closed, but there is an exact replica at the visitor centre so you do get a substitute experience! Make sure to go to the visitor centre first, there is no direct access to the monuments. A free shuttle bus takes you on the short 5 minute journey to the monument where you meet the tour guides who are very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Would highly recommend a visit!

One of the highlights of our trip to Ireland. (And that saying something considering that the country has so many wonderful places to visit). It's was truly amazing to stand inside of a structure over 5000 years old and learn about it's history. A must see for anyone who enjoys history.

Tried for years to visit here. Well worthbthe wait. Advance tickets only even in winter. As expected for a busy tourist site every step is managed by tour guides. They are very infotmed and friendly though. A lovely walk and then bus ride up to the site.

Massive piece of Irish history, some guides were good. Don’t understand how such amount of concrete could have been used? I’m not an archaeologist, but I think they have destroyed it?

  • 5/5 Mark Michael B. 5 years ago on Google
Newgrange leaves you behind wondering how, HOW on earth did these people manage to build it, a thousand years before the Pyramids and Stonehenge? The tours provided by the visitor's center are kept small enough so everyone can actually enter the inside chamber and listen to the guide explaining. However, the question of HOW remains a little unanswered (especially how 40 ton stones were transported 20-30 kilometers, 5.200 years ago - without even metal instruments). Breathtaking and beautiful!

It a place you must visit when in Ireland. Book your tickets online otherwise you much be dissapointed. 5000 years old amazing monument. To avoid hordes of tourists it's good to visit during winter months just make sure you'll have a nice weather. There is shuttle bus taking you to the site from visitors centre. So don't drive up to the Newgrange directly, you need to go to the visitor centre, get your sticker with time and then take your shuttle. There's is a nice exhibition, cafe and souvenir shop.

Over 5,000 years old! Older than the pyramids and Stone Henge! I spent almost all my time chatting with one of the site experts about the history of the people of Ireland. These mounds give a glimpse of one the neolithic people's culture.

This has been on my list for a long time and unfortunately I did it the year you can't get into the chamber. Still worth a trip, a fascinating site and more so when you realise just what was achieved with apparently so little. The two guides on the site were excellent, very knowledgeable and interested in sharing. Excellent visitors centre with a lot of information on the site and its excavations. The tour is a little rushed but I think its aimed at letting as many people as possible into the chamber, a small space with only one entrance and exit.

  • 5/5 Jorge B. 2 years ago on Google
Amazing experience where you can see and touch stone markings made by someone over 5000 years ago. The tour guides are very nice. You get an explanation and a tour inside the tomb (you can't take pictures inside) and then you can explore the outside on your own.

The following review is based on a pre-pandemic trip going old school and only using paper maps and brochures to find places to stop at on a 3-week adventure to Ireland, Scotland, and England. No cell phone or internet. This historic site is kind of hard to explain. Some might see it as a chamber with a lot of dirt over it, and other see it as a feat of human engineering. Remember they did this with out tractors and modern gear. There were staff around when we visited talking about the different areas of the site and what they believe the were used for. The entire site is essentially a astrological calendar. When you go into the main chamber, it make you wonder why they did all this work so at one point in time the light shine perfectly into the chamber. those tours we were told are book a year out so if you wanted to time that experience, plan ahead.

(Translated by Google) Older than the Pyramids of Egypt, this structure was discovered in the 17th century, but it was only researched in the 20th century. From the outside, the construction looks simple, although it is a perfect cycle with an impressive diameter. Inside, however, there is a tomb. If you visit it during the solstice, you will witness what really makes this impressive monument: a ray of light gradually fills the room.

This place is a must visit for anyone who cares about sacred sites and Earth history. I one day dream about being there during the winter solstice. In my opinion this is one of the great wonders of the world. There are stones that were used as the base of the structure that weigh tons! How did they get them there is a question that has not left my brain since seeing the place. The visitor center was being renovated when I was there, but it looks absolutely amazing! Dont miss this if you are in Ireland!

Was a really great and peaceful experience. I enjoyed the tomb itself and the guide. It definitely sparked an interest in what more there could be. Very well looked after. Nice visitor centre with access to washrooms, a cafe and gift shop. Nice little educational walk through. There early on a Sunday morning was the second tour and it was lovely and quiet. Can’t wait to visit again. Visited during Storm Ciara during a short calming of the storm.

Went to Newgrange when they reopened the visitor centre. The tour itself was good - very good guide provided a lot of information. You can go out to the actual monument and do a tour of the room inside. Great to hear about the history of the monument but don't recommend if you are claustrophobic or afraid of the dark. Hidden treasure Newgrange is an ancient burial tomb in Ireland far older than the pyramids and Stonehenge. It's one of the first known examples of a massive structure aligned so that on the winter solstice sunlight shines through its central passages, illuminating the burial tomb. If you're in Ireland see it!
