Termonfeckin is from the Irish Tearmann Féichín which means 'Féchín's refuge' (Féchín [of Fore] also known as Mo-Ecca, was a 7th-century Irish saint who founded a monastic site in AD665 in the village). After the Anglo-Norman colonisation of Louth in the late 1100's, the village evolved into a medieval borough which was sufficiently important to have possessed a parish church (on the site of the present Church of Ireland) and two castles. Both of these appear to have been tower houses although only one is now left. The surviving castle is a 15th or 16th century three storey rectangular building which originally had projecting towers. However, it has been the subject of major alterations at some time in its history, particularly on the ground storey, these alterations are possibly the work of Captain Brabazon who is documented as having 'repaired' the castles in Termonfeckin in 1641. We were able to gain access from the keyholder and ramble and clamber about the ample ruins to our heart’s content. What is most surprising is that the interior ceilings are corbelled – which is the same building technique as the roof of the prehistoric passage tomb at Newgrange – even the little guard turrets at roof level are also corbelled.

Loved this stop. Grab the key from the keeper next door and enjoy exploring an old, untouched ruin. Both locks are a bit finicky to get, but you can get inside both the gate and castle!

Very well-preserved ruin that you can visit and climb to the top of the tower. To get onto the grounds and into the castle you need the key, which is left in the very nice neighborhood. Entry is free.

Lovely little castle. You can explore the castle from the bottom floor all the way to the very top. It's in excellent condition and the steps up to the top are daunting, dont wear high heels. The grounds are very small and that's a pity because it's difficult to get photos from far enough away to make them look anything. Many, many thank to the attractive young lady that gave me the key to explore this castle all to myself, I asked her was it possible to get out back to get photos but she informed me it was private property, the castle is fantastic to explore and it will not disappoint. Some points to be aware of there is no official parking places and some construction was taking place beside where I parked, because the grounds are so small you will need a bigger lens than my 16 to 35 to get everything in, this is a little gem with a little more ground, safe and secure parking this could be right up there with the best Ireland has to offer. It is suitable for families but not for the elderly or the disabled just because of the steps leading from floor to floor, they are very narrow and slippy. I hope this helps you to plan you visit, enjoy
