Great British castle. The grounds are kept up very well. I recommend going to the highest point within the castle as you get a wonderful view of the Irish sea. The castle's liaison was very personable and helpful. There are plaques to read at the site that share information about the castle's history. It's a great day trip from Dundalk town or Carlingford.

Greencastle Castle is the only Royal Castle in Northern Ireland. The initial build can be dated back to the 13th Centuary and as with most castles it suffered many attacks and underwent much reworking throughout its history. Located on the shores of Carlingford Lough, its role would no doubt have been for observation and defence. There is a small carpark and portaloo for visitors. The castle is fully accessible to visitors with protected walkways right to the top of each tower and along passageways. Information boards tell the history of the castle. There is limited open days for the castle so it is best to check with the Environment and heritage website before planning a visit.

Cool Castle but the only road that we saw leading to the grounds had a private road sign and we didn't see any other entrances. A lot of the sites we visited in Ireland seemed to not be on public land like they were in England. Maybe it was just our luck this trip. But either way it is an impressive castle on the coast.

An unexpected pleasant surprise upon disembarking from the ferry with car full of kids. They spent a good half hour running around exploring. Some historical info available as well as a public toilet.

A lesser known piece of history, this castle is a worth a visit for an afternoon out. It is free in when it is open (usually around the summer months) and it doesn't take all that long to walk around. There isn't a pile of information around the castle but there are a few boards with historical information. It's fairly basic in the lower castle but the maze of walkways in the upper parts of the castle and 'turrets' are fun to explore.

Interesting place. Lots of steps and don't go if you're afraid of heights!

Fun Castle to explore and great views. Some of the entrances are short, so watch your head! Great place to visit on a sunny day. No line, no tickets, just walk right up.

Our first castle visit in Ireland, however, it is closed Sundays so we could only see it from the road. Lovely setting.
