So sad to write this review. I had wanted to visit this place steeped in history for several years. Although aware that it was very 'simple' I was sadly disappointed. Mainly because I think there is room for improvement. Once through the gate it is not very clear where you have to pass and there were several fenced off areas. Once we found the path, however, we came across several dogs, all of which were always loose, a couple of which came up to us and jumped on our trousers, making them dirty. I have a dog, that's not the problem. But if I were a person who was afraid of dogs, I wouldn't like free dogs, on a historical site, especially when there are vast areas of countryside around for them to run and play. The owners were all locals and despite calling the dogs back none of them returned to the owner. So as well as being careful not to step in cow/goat droppings, you have to be careful of dog droppings too. Another small sore point is the dirt around and even inside the site. Such an important heritage, I believe, should be preserved, perhaps with more rules, especially if people are unable to do so themselves.

I came in expecting it to be more of an archeological site like similar sites in the area, but it’s more of a public park. Dogs on walks, people hanging out and having picnics - it’s a beautiful social, public place. Certainly worth a visit, especially when the weather is good. No easily accessible bathrooms later in the day.

The importance of this site to Irish History goes beyond any explanation capable of fitting in a Google review. And, despite this(which would be enough to pay a visit) the view you have when standing where would be the High King of Ireland is just completely astonishing. Gives you goosebumps all over. I mean, if you like Irish history, you should definitely visit this place. And bring your family too, on a sunny day, it's breathtaking.

S P E C T A C U L A R . . . From the ancient history, to the carefully crafted mounds, the wishing tree, and the finale - Stone of Destiny! Wrap your arms around the stone and feel the energy of kings rush through your entire being! And don't miss the Holy Well up the road!

It was a fair walk up the hills to the site where the five Irish kings would meet. It was an ancient burial grounds. The views of the surrounding countryside were beautiful to see. You could see the reason this site was used for their meeting place and for burying loved ones ashes. If you have extra time, It's worth the time to visit this site. It seems runners like it, too!

Beautiful sight if you love being outdoors and nature. History of this place is amazing so make sure to read a bit about it before or right there by the entrance there are boards with explanations.

Beautiful place and extraordinary energy. I love going there for a walk with my dogs and admire the beautiful landscape all around. Further, it has nice historical sites to visit and learn about Irish ancient history.

We stopped at the Hill of Tara on a Tuesday afternoon. Be prepared to walk for a bit throughout the surrounding fields - there are just such great views and scenery that you wouldn't want to miss. The mounds themselves are interesting and truly makes you wonder about the true origins. The little shops just outside are nice to walk through, have great food and drinks as well.

This is a very nice place to visit. Going from Dublin you can take a car to navan. From There find buses that you can take until there. It is an open place like a park and you can entry any time and it’s free. You will see the place in this pictures and if is a sunny day you can lay down on the grass do a picnic or whatever. Nice and historic place in Ireland I would recommend a visit at least once… not many to do but just as a check point place if tou like visiting new spots

The seat of power for the ancient High Kings of Ireland. Beautiful landscapes and picturesque views. Beautiful gift shop and restaurant but with limited parking.

I managed to get here on the hottest day in Ireland! 29 degrees! If it will ever be a sunny day with many degrees, don't forget to take a sun hat, because you will walk in open, unshaded areas. Most likely due to the lack of a guided tour, I was not impressed by the historical remains. Need to study myself. The coffee shop in the parking very busy and nice.

Coldest part of Ireland! Great piece of history! Not much to see except for the burial mounds, but once the tour guides starts talking about the significance of the mounds them everything starts to make sense. Great tour!

Family favorite for some fresh air, great views and impromptu adventure! Loads of wild patches to go for walks and hunts slightly off the more touristic popular tracks. Delighted to have it on our door step!

Excellent value as free. Don't use the pay parking, plenty of free parking. Nice coffee shop and alot of information regarding the history of Tara. If weather good bring a picnic.

The history of the Hill of Tara is fantastic and for that reason alone it is essential visiting - however the OPW have done a poor job. Little or no signage to inform visitors - place packed today and the tourist center does not open until May - so much colourful and interesting history in the site - but hard to know what one is looking at.

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! We were fortunate to go on a nice, sunny day, and the views were spectacular. We parked a little ways away, but the walk was nice and we saw plenty of farm life that seemed happy to be around. After seeing the hills, we went to the Hill of Tara cafe and had a lovely lunch. Everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful when we had questions. I definitely recommend seeing this, and try going on a sunny day!

A wonderful place to visit whether you have 30 minutes or a full day. I've visited Tara Hill on a number of occasions but have always enjoyed watching the sun set from here. Whilst it's open the whole time, the surrounding amenities do have specific opening hours which can change depending on the season. It's a great place to visit but I would suggest wearing walking boots as the land can get muddy& a bit slippy after some period of wet/ damp weather. I'd also recommend bringing hats & gloves as the area is quiet open to the elements & can be cold especially if you're visiting during the Winter or early Spring. The only issue you'll find is with the parking. Whilst there's a nice, renovated carpark across from Maguires cafe & a smaller one located at the entrance to the site, it can be difficult to get a parking spot if the weather is dry & bright- there were loads of cars parked on the side of the road leading up to the site which made it a bit difficult getting up the road. I would recommend going up early to be guaranteed a spot. Outside of this small issue this is definitely a place to visit, learn a bit of history, chat with the other visitors (if you want) breath the fresh air and relax. Have fun, maybe I'll see you down there !!

Great to spend time here with family, amazing views and photo ops and plenty of walking routes through the grass areas. Lots of wildlife insects and plants. Be wary of lots of nettles though. Plenty of parking around, can be absolutely mental on sunny weekends but patience will pay off. Lovely little cafe and shop across from car park. Most dog walkers leave dogs on lead as instructed but there's always A*******s who leave theirs off the lead, just to be wary, hence why my dog will be on lead w/o muzzle. There was fresh honey for sale when I visited, unbelievable stuff. Can't wait to go back next week.

Visited the place with friends. While seeing the pics in Google I had many expectations about the place but after seeing the place didn't expect my expectations. It is a hill which is fully covered with grass and flowers . The hill has its own value in Irish history . It is a battlefield and burial ground for many soldiers . There is an information centre along with a small chapel and cemetery situated inside the place . You will get leaf let from information centre for help to find specific areas. Parking areas , cafe , toilet facilities are available. Dogs are welcome with leads only. No entry free.

Nice short walk up an easy gradient. Lovely views over a large area on a clear day. I really enjoyed it. Can be quite muddy but this is Ireland so pretty much expected!

Historical place , spiritual significance , Pagan beliefs, Catholic beliefs . Interesting at soltices , there will be bongo banging, tree hugging , new age hippy and white witch types in abundance .Head for the far right hand side of the hill for a semi forested walk , kids will appreciate it. Cubby holes and fairy trees etc . Great views from the top of the hill which will take in several counties. There is an excellent coffee shop /gift shop which sells good food and seating both inside and outside . There is also an old book shop separate to the coffee shop .

Sacred place of druids who have reminded only in English and Irish legends. But nowdays is a great archeologic place and wonderful must-seen for tourists.

Definitely worth a visit. Wonderful to walk around and view History. The only downside to the visit was the small shop we had read about in previous reviews. So we planned accordingly and showed up before 5.30pm- the shop is advertised as being open til 6pm along with the Hill of Tara. As we approached the doorway, it was literally shut in our faces by a sour looking woman and a large key turned in the lock quite loudly and deliberately. She then turned her back on us. It was the rudest thing I’ve ever seen. She had obviously decided to go home for the day- even with a large number of people still arriving and showing interest in this store. (Her right to close up early for sure- but the manner in which she did it was less than desirable) My advice- visit the Historical monument and enjoy the beautiful scenery and give this shop a HUGE MISS! If you’re wanting a memento - take a great photo instead. There are plenary of other places to spend your money. The Hill of Tara itself is free 😊

Great historical place to visit. If your in the vicinity or looking for a great spot for a picnic with children then I say to you go. Informative staff to let you know about forts etc. Fabulous views.

Beautiful place with a really amazing shop, honestly one of the best shops, pagans SAVE UP, they have it all and you will want it all! Great pagan book selection! The restaurant is absolutely delicious but as a historian and archeology student, seeing the way the monuments are kept neatly made me cry. No surveillance or rules whatsoever so the damage is quite visible and irreversible.

Special place to visit, it's a shame the terrain is not more signposted, no clearly defined paths. Loved the shop.

360-degree view of amazing landscape. So green and lush, it was awe-inspiring.

This historic site is steeped in a spiritual aura, but physically, not much remains. The view onto the valley is nice and the site gets an extra star for being very dog-friendly, which is uncommon for historical sites like this. You can bring your dog to the sites and walk around the grounds, a lovely day out idea for history buffs with a canine companion they want to bring along.
