What is this rumor that people want to take down the Spire? Yes, I read how much it costs to keep clean, etc and yes, the artist should have made the design all the way up it but it is truly an icon for this city and the country itself. Coming from America taking a picture here was top on my list. Please don't take this down, I'll be back!

You can't miss seeing the spire when you're in Dublin City centre even when you don't have the plan to see this. This is in the heart of Dublin with 120 mts height. So many food joints and shops nearby. The bus stop tram stop is all very near to the spire. The construction was completed in 2003 and this is the tallest man made structure in Ireland. During night time you can see the light at the top from most of the places in Dublin City which you can use to know which direction you're in the City.

The spire, or the monument of light! A great beacon of the city! It's fairly new, completed in 2002 of stainless steel, it is polished at the base and as it soars in the sky it becomes a true beacon in the night sky at night with illumination from the inside of its tip. It is in the heart of Dublin, in the middle of a super busy intersection. The street is laced with flower stands, street musicians and just the vibrant Irish crowd. It's a good site to visit!

It is one of the chief attractions of the Dublin City. The spire of Dublin is a tall pin like stainless steel monument with 120 metre height located at the O’conell Street. This was completed in 2003. It has got a diameter of 3 metre at base and 15 cm at top. It is built with eight stainless steel hollow cone sections. It has got a feature of two ‘tuned mass dampers’ to arrest the sway. The monument was designed by ‘Ian Ritchie Architects’ and constructed in place of ‘Nelson’s Pillar’ which was damaged by the explosions in 1966. The Spire is said to be the world’s’ tallest sculpture.

I love this thing. Need to learn more about its history, but just think it is an awesome beacon of the city. Love the James Joyce statue right next to it too. Good spot in a bustling part of the city for pictures.

No way you can miss The Spire if you are in the city centre. Very tall building, this is a landmark in Dublin City. We use this as our meeting point during our visit and stay in Dublin . Difficult to get the full picture of the landmark though. Don’t worry you cannot miss seeing this tower if you are in the city centre!

The spire was once the tallest Man made structure in the world. At its base is a digital depiction of a strand of DNA. It remains impressive to see both close up and from afar. The diverse collection of people you meet around the spire is its greatest asset though. All nations, creeds and outlooks congregate at its base. Most days you will see demonstrations here, or the odd photo shoot, flower sellers, preachers and even victims of fashion!

Just a huge pointless piece of metal, pointing gormlessly at the dismal, rain leadened sky. The friendliest people in Dublin, the tourists, come from all-over the world, and by the simple baloney of the Irish tourist board, they imagine themselves to be in the presence of some very special essence of Dublin. In one sense it is perfect, as it with refreshing honesty, epitomises Dublin, as a shiny piece of mercenary metal, mendacious, meaningless and pointing nowhere. The city of Joyce, Behan and Kavanagh and the once proud second city of the Empire, now resembles Blackpool, but without the sea or the charm.

The Spire is a beautiful place at the heart of Dublin which is not only a marvelous tower but also a great spot for hanging out with friends and colleagues. I would give the place 5 stars but due to overcrowding there is a lot of dirt and garbage thrown here by people which ruins the aesthetics of the place. I would recommend everyone visiting Dublin to come see the Spire at least once. As a person living in Dublin, I myself visit this place every weekend.

The tall needle like momument is one of the tallest structures in Dublin and can be seen from afar. Uo close it's perhaps not as striking. Yet it is unique and worth some pictures.

The Spire was constructed in 2003 as a replacement a statue of Nelson's, which stood on the same site before it was blown up by Irish Republican's

The Spire of Dublin, alternatively titled the Monument of Light , is a large, stainless steel, pin-like monument 120 metres (390 ft) in height, located on the site of the former Nelson's Pillar and statue of William Blakeney on O'Connell Street in Dublin, Ireland. In the 1990s, the streets were not that attractive to the eye. Trees were overgrowing in these streets and several shops were there. The trees had been growing for centuries. The idea of cutting them off was brought but it was criticised by many people. Statues were cleaned and relocated to other places. The plastic signage and frontage were required to be replaced with more attractive designs. idea of the Spire of Dublin was brought up to replace the monument for Nelson’s Pillar. It was chosen from a large number of submissions in an international competition that was chaired by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Joe Doyle.

This remarkably tall stainless steel pointy monument stands 120meters high, and the head of the spire is 50cms wide. After the bombing of the famous Nelson pillar in 1966, there was a gaping hole. An international competition was launched in 1988 and the participants were told that the new structure should have a modern touch to it and that it should represent 21st century contemporary style and hence the Spire was constructed. The Spire is also called as An Tur Solais ( The monument of light).

I don’t want to be overly critical or harsh about the Spire, but as landmarks go it’s pretty underwhelming. It’s just a metal needle sticking up into the sky.

Amazing construction. But you have to Google the info on it. The locals call " the Spire in the mire" or the "rod to God".

The spire is a beautiful work of art in the heart of Dublin. A fun fact was that it had lot of nicknames and it also took quite some time to build. A fun fact about its construction was that bevause it took so long a radio station launched a completion for the best song for the completion of its construction. The one that won was the "I can see Clerys now the cranes are gone" Clerysis a long-established department store on O'Connell Street just across from the Spire. Another fact is that the mirror like Design on the base of it, its identical to the one of the stone that was used for its foundation. Also to understand how deep its is foundation you only need to look at the first part of it fom the base until the point where it joints the next part (there is a distinct line)

Not sure how a metal skewer could be the " beacon for the city of Dublin " but nonetheless it is a beacon for tourists and a way of getting your bearings as it can be spotted from a good distance away ( if the view is clear enough )

Amazing. It just points straight up. I don't know why something so irrelevant & has no meaning to the city of Dublin is front & centre on O'Connell Street. That's why it's amazing & blows my mind.

The beauty of the Spire is that it commemorates nothing but toasts Dublin's bustling present and points forward towards a limitless, brighter, and more prosperous future. Worth a visit.

Dublin spire is pretty cool. It’s in one of the main tourist and shopping area of the city. It’s a good photo souvenir of your visit and it’s free. No tickets need just walk up and get your photo.

The true heart of Dublin… My Irish friend told me that if you look up the Spire right beneath it, you feel like seeing the Spire going endlessly up to the sky like the Tower of Babel.. Truly amazing feature on the street

Dublin along with its people are magical. The spire stands in O' Connoll Street 120 metres 390ft high, made of stainless steel, and is in the place where Nelsons piller once stood. it can be seen from Henry Street and also Talbot Street. I don't find it exciting to look at and perhaps a statue of an Irish hero, writer or poet could have gone there.

The Monument of Light is impossible to miss as this 120-meter tall monument stands proud on its 3-meter, bronze base symbolic of the past. The hollow, peened stainless steel of the spire tapers to a point of 15 centimetres, the last 12m of which provide an illuminated beacon for Dublin’s night sky. The monument was completed on 21 Jan 2003. You enjoy the best view of the stainless stiletto by walking towards it down O’Connell street. About 12000 tiny holes allow light to pass through during the day.
