I
went
with
three
friends
and
stayed
over
a
long
holiday
weekend.
Us
and
one
other
person
were
the
only
guests
on
the
island
for
three
days.
There
are
only
four
or
five
rooms
so
it
seems
unlikely
that
there
would
ever
be
very
many
people
there.
The
shared
guest
space
is
very
pleasant
with
tables,
hammocks,
and
a
treehouse-type
platform
above
the
beach.
We
packed
a
box
full
of
snacks
but
purchased
meals
from
the
staff.
The
food
was
basic
but
good:
fish,
chicken,
soup;
bread
and
eggs
for
breakfast.
The
owner
was
even
kind
enough
to
share
the
meat
from
a
goat
slaughtered
for
a
special
occasion.
We
were
there
in
rainy
season
and
sure
enough,
it
rained
about
half
the
time.
We
relaxed,
read,
played
games
while
it
rained.
When
it
wasn't
raining,
we
walked
to
the
other
beach
where
I
saw
monkeys
and
several
creepy-crawly
critters.
Unfortunately,
the
beach
on
that
side
had
not
been
cleaned
and
was
covered
in
trash
from
Freetown.
We
also
took
the
boat
for
scuba
diving
so
we
were
able
to
see
some
of
the
island
and
enjoy
the
water.
The
water
was
not
too
clear
given
the
season
but
not
too
bad.
We
also
took
the
village
walk,
which
was
very
interesting,
although
the
guide
spoke
in
only
Krio
and
didn't
know
much
beyond
the
history
basics.
Clearly,
there
is
much
more
to
discover
about
the
role
of
the
slave
trade
in
shaping
the
history
of
the
islands,
Sierra
Leone,
and
other
nations.
I
highly
recommend
Banana
Island
for
a
few
days
if
you
are
in
Freetown.
It
is
very
close
and
accessible,
and
you'll
feel
a
world
away
from
the
city.
