Iconic Dublin lighthouse. A great stroll out along the South Wall on its weathered stone slabs, past the Half Moon swimming spot, while ferries and cargo ships bound for Europe slice through the waves beside you. At the end stands this impressive old red lighthouse, picked out perfectly against the blue sky

Very scenic experience. Peaceful walk. You can grab coffee or whiskey from the food truck. Must visit. Walking and cycling are the best way to explore the surroundings.

Great spot to enjoy the sunrise! The walk to the lighthouse itself is quite long and may pose challenges to anyone with mobility challenges. There are a couple parking lots along the way - one right near the start of the walk that doesn't necessarily look like a road when you reach it. The other is back around a turn in the road. Along the walk, you'll likely get to see a variety of birds, ships coming in and out, and possible some seals! The views of land from the lighthouse are also great.

Visited Dec 2023 Poolbeg Lighthouse is currently in operation as an aid to navigation at the mouth of the River Liffey, near Poolbeg in Dublin. First established in 1767, it initially operated on candlepower, but this was changed to oil in 1786. It was re-designed and re-built into its present form in 1820 The lighthouse, one of a formation of three, is located on the Great South Wall (South Bull Wall), at the Port of Dublin, which extends from Ringsend's Poolbeg peninsula nearly four miles out into Dublin Bay. The wall was the world's longest at the time of its building, and remains one of the longest sea-walls in Europe. One of the other two lighthouses is located on the Bull Wall opposite, and the other on a wooden platform mid-channel. The Poolbeg Lighthouse is a conspicuous feature in the bay, in which it occupies an almost central position. It is nearly equidistant from Dublin, Dún Laoghaire, and Howth, and commands extensive views of the shores of the bay, with an unbroken panorama of the mountains on the south. Howth is very visible from this point

Great place for a walk on a sunny day. A lot of specimen birds and great place for ship spotting, angling or jogging. While jogging please look at the ground as there are small holes in the ground. Also be careful during extreme weather due to high waves. The wall is one of the longest seawall's in Europe so you should definitely check it out. 👍

When I lived in Dublin, the path to Poolbeg Lighthouse was my favorite spot for running and walking. The path offers a tranquil escape with breathtaking panoramic views, enveloped by the sea and embraced by nature, all just a stone throw away from the city. This place does really captures the essence of Dublin’s serene coastal beauty

Beautiful location in an industry laden area. Slabs are uneven (think massive cobble stones) views are fantastic and ferry's seem within touching distance

Really great to walk out to the lighthouse on a sunny day. There isn’t a way to go into the light house but the views along the wall are great. There are also some places to swim. When I went there was also a coffee cart at the beginning of the walk.

Nice place do go for a walk, especially in a sunny day. My advice: check the ferry schedule before to go, like that you can enjoy the boat departure, maybe with your kids.

A lovely 2km walk from the cat park to the lighthouse, plus 2 back. On a windy but clear and warm day the sea was spectacular. To get to the car park you go through a very industrial area, so car or taxi is useful.

This is a beautiful place in the city... Never miss this for a long walk during the weekends . Mostly recommended in the evening while the sun sets . You can watch the cruise moving towards the harbour .. the sun kissed view during the evening is lovely on the cruise or the cargo ships . The golden sky, the blue sea and red light house and the green algae on the rocks .. The colors are vivid and you have to view that to enjoy #Dublin #Harbour #Poolbeg #LightHouse #Tourism #MustVisit

Great place with a lovely view. With the Sean Moore park as a starting point it took us about an hour of walking to reach the lighthouse and only the last 20 minutes through the harbour.

This place is very amazing and magical. To get to the lighthouse you have to walk 15 minutes along the pier.

A nice, long walk (probably just over a kilometer) with beautiful views over the bay, the harbor, and the island in front. Extremely windy and cold, in spite of the warm, sunny day in the city. I would definitely not recommend it on a rough day.

This is a good place to go for half day out plan. You can take a walk. It’s bit windy over there so I won’t recommend going on rainy days. There are no cafes and restaurants around that place so card water bottle and light snacks if you like.

This place has to be one of my favourite places in all Ireland. The iconic Poolbeg lies at the end of the Great South Wall and it’s a fabulous walk out to the lighthouse and back. The views around Dublin Bay are stunning. There’s people swimming at Poolbeg beach at the top of the Wall and there’s the iconic Poolbeg Chimneys. There’s so much activity around here with walkers and people watching the ships arrive and leave Dublin Port. Poolbeg Lighthouse is the symbol on Poolbeg Press book publishers so something I identify with from childhood. The famous red lighthouse and the two chimney stacks can be seen from miles around.

One of three lighthouses that make a formation in the Dublin bay area and a lovely walk along one of the longest sea walls in Europe. It is definitely worth the 1.5 hrs walk from the city of Dublin to escape the noise, rubbish and grime of city life. I was blessed with a lovely sunny cool winters day so the views were fabulous watching the various ships sail in and out of the bay. You can drive to the location and park not to far from the sea wall but where is the fun in all that?, you miss soo much cocooned in your metal box! And the reason why you have green and red buoys? As with all navigational aids marking a channel, the port side as you head upstream is indicated by red markers whilst the right hand side or starboard of the channel is green

Walked all the way here from Temple Bar area, 0/5 stars would not recommend walking to here from there. Lots of sketchy industrial areas that you need to go through. The park and surrounding area itself though is an amazing view of the harbor area. The walk out is quite far, id say almost a mile, but the break water is pretty neat to traverse and the lighthouse itself was pretty neat. All in all a good place to check out and you have a fairly good chance of seeing some boats leaving the harbor.

Best place to see the ships leaving and arriving in Dublin port. Offers a good walk outside the busy and noisy city. Its a good attraction especially when is sunny outside. In a stormy, rainy, windy day, it can be admired from distance as the tall waves could really soke you to the skin on the long walk to it. But if you are lucky and the weather allows you to visit it, you will sure have a very good view of the open sea and of the Port.

First time to visit poolbeg lighthouse and chimneys, was a nice walk out. Got a nice October morning for it which made for some nice photos. Highly recommend it, it is about 4k there and back and the ground is uneven so bring sensible appropriate footwear... Oh and Mr Hobbs coffee truck is a must 👌🏻

One of my fav swimming spots, just about 25’ cycle from Portobello. There’s a lovely walk / cycle from Sandymount park down to Shellybanks beach. The swimming spot is half way through the lighthouse. Check the tides before you go! You can still swim about two hours before and after high tide, if not too choppy!

The track is really nice, you have the green and blue sides, nature and the sea along the path. Very beautiful and nice for a walk. I've done it several times already. It's worth it!!!! Be careful, on windy days it might not be the best option.

Stunning views of the sea, Howth, and Poolbeg chimneys. A nice 2-3 hour return walk from Sandymount. I would recommend arriving at the lighthouse during the sunset for the best experience.

Long walk to get there if you don’t have a car- the nearest bus stop is over a half hour away. Once you’re there , there are beautiful views of the city, harbor, and ships coming in! If you’re looking for a long walk on a sunny day, it’s worth going. Try to time your walk with high tide!

Lovely walk out and back, surrounded by water. Watch the ferries head out up close. Easy parking and 20 min walk out to the end of the pier. Great fresh air and a different angle on Dublin.

It's a great place for a walk, but it is a VERY long walk, without really anywhere to stop along the way and nothing much at the end. Good views of the harbour, though.

Absolutely breathtaking! I was super pleased to make it to Poolbeg lighthouse. Please not the path is wide but half of the path to the lighthouse is u even slabs. Which can make it more harder or slower to walk across. The second half of the walkway is flat and better to walk on. The lighthouse is very striking, colourful and awesome. Overall another breathtaking experience. Lighthouse, sea waves, walking, breathing in sea air. Well worth visiting. It was popular during my walk there.

This is a lovely walk trough the port of Dublin. You can park near enough then walk the remaining distance.

An absolute gem to visit for a beautiful walk along the coastline of Dublin. The only con is about connectivity from nearest bus stop which is like 3 kms away otherwise it is worth to spend time hete

Expect the long walk but the place is worthy to be seen. Quite difficult to get there, especially through the factories district, but in the end, it stays there :) great views

A great place to go for a walk and relax... But it's really weather dependent. That being said it can been a great place to see the sunrise

A great experience walking to the lighthouse which is a landmark in Dublin. Take the route via the Irish town and the national park along with the beach. The walk is amazing through the wilderness leading to the lighthouse

One of Dublins great walks, the Great South Wall is an amazing experience, a wonderful place to walk. Word of warning, bring flat sturdy footware👌.

Always wanted to do the Poolbeg lighthouse walk after seeing it in a Phil Lynott video. Lovely pier walk with no surrounding wall it's like walking out to sea. Mr.Hobbs coffee and hot chocolate is a bonus also

  • 5/5 Aditya V. 1 year ago on Google
Very peaceful and serene spot. Absolutely stunning view after a good hour long walk from Sandymount strand. The sound of crashing waves, the red old lighthouse and the isolation from the mainland makes it one of the best places for an individual to chill off. Detox etc.

Lovely walk. Great views on a clear day. And out on the water, the green lighhouse is Dublins oldest.
