A great asset to the locality. Very well maintained grounds with great facilities for a cheap family day out. We brought a picnic and used the tables provided. There is a lovely cafe with dine in or out options. They sell a lot of items with home grown ingredients from the garden on the grounds which is very cool. The castle itself is very small but a great piece of history to have on the grounds. There is a playground and a visitors centre onsite too so a lot of entertainment for the whole family.

I would not have known this was a castle. A little misleading. Looks like a tall house, or a manor. Sad I didn't get to go inside either.

The cafe has the greatest quiches and salads.... do try. An see if there's an exhibition in the gallery in the Visitor's Centre. Great Feltmaking exhibition in October.

The place around is very nice for a picnic, but the castle is very small.

A little slice of heaven in the middle of the Phoenix Park. A place to get a coffee and cake, sit on the lawn and watch the world go by.

Nice area to stop for the walled garden and the medieval tower that you can visit through the Visitors centre. Enjoy a tea or lunch in the Phoenix park café. Kids playground just behind the garden and maze around the tower house.

Great place to bring kids. Playground is amazing. Lots of grassy space to run around in and the cafe serves great food. Parking can be a nightmare on good weather days though!

Lovely place to have lunch albeit very long queue to order food approx. 45/60 minutes wait. Plenty of seating. No problems parking on the Sunday. Clean toilets. Lovely walks around the park - very interesting & enormous trees where the children seem to be having great fun.

This place is lovely when the weather is nice. The castle is small but the maze is really fun for children to get to the middle. There are many events inside to see. You can see stuffed animals, there is a cinema room showing videos and there is also a café. The nearby walled garden is a 5 to 10 min walk away. Great for a nice little day out.

Lovely place! I will definitely go back in Summer. The cafe is very expensive and barely any sitting tables

It's a beautiful spot. It was lashing rain but there is an upstairs in the restaurant and there are places in the courtyard to get out of the rain too. Very healthy nutritious food.

Great playground lovley coffee shop and garden, only bad thing is the toilets, they are now shared male/female, and there were mam's dad's kids all standing in the one room and they were quite messy,,,,,,

This is an ideal spot for people who enjoy running and walking in the park. So drop your car off in the car park, go for your long run around the park and then aim to end your run there. Then go and enjoy a fresh coffee in Ashtown Castle.

It's a fascinating story how this castle was found when they knocked down the Georgian house formerly used as the under secretary's house and then the papal nuncio - nobody knew it was there! Well worth doing the (free) tour 😎

Great place for a picnic. No barbaque's allowed but food and beverage available in the centre. Toilets here last.

It's OK to come on walk here. Castle is not big or impressive but it's must to see anyway in this area.

Phoenix park. Pure heaven. No other comments needed.

  • 4/5 Patrick B. 5 years ago on Google
A fortified house rather than a castle, its interest lies in the restoration and history it exemplifies. Well worth a short visit to complement the kitchen garden and visitor center.

I was here for the honey show and biodiversity weekend. It was a lovely day on Sat but the light blowy rain arrived on Sunday morn. Most events were inside so not a major problem really but it is hard to find shelter for everyone at the same time! It is a super well run event and particularly good to let the younger ones see “behind the scenes” of mother nature!

(Translated by Google) It is not possible to get inside, but walking around the building outside is a pleasure. Nearby there is a coniferous forest and a labyrinth of a low diva hedge. It all looks fantastically beautiful. I think if people were allowed inside, there would be no stone left over from the building.

    Nice cafe and gardens

I would barely call it a castle. It's more like a single tower and that's about it. We weren't even able to get in at the time because, unnounced on their website, mornings are reserved for school tours. If you are in Phoenix Park, sure, I guess visit it. Otherwise, a waste of time to walk here.

Beautiful spot and the colours are lovely there right now. Conveniently located by the café and information centre with plenty of outdoor courtyard seating.

The title 'castle' is greatly misleading as it is no more than just a medieval tower. On top of that, we were not allowed to enter it. A disappointing visit.

Very nice place to go with kids.

A lovely spot in Phoenix Park. There's tours of the castle Tower & a park with a maze (albeit a small one) Decent coffee shop as well & the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre is well worth a look also
