A
ruined
monastery
with
broken
round
tower
picturesquely
located
near
a
lake
in
Cavan.
The
monastery
is
said
to
have
been
founded
by
St
Columba
in
the
6th
Century.
The
present
church
building
dates
to
perhaps
the
12th
Century.
The
Round
Tower
was
built
with
a
wider
circumference
than
many
other
monastic
round
towers,
and
the
lower
levels
are
built
with
carefully
dressed
stone.
The
monastery
was
used
an
Anglican
church
until
1821
at
which
point
the
monastery
was
abandoned.
There
are
many
graves
surrounding
the
site,
and
one
contemporary
grave
incongruously
placed
within
the
monastery
itself.
Some
of
these
graves
are
of
historical
interest,
but
the
graveyard
is
still
very
much
used
by
the
local
community.
