Must visit for Tagore lovers. You will get to know a lot about Rabindranath Tagore. But the staff is very rude and impolite. Photography is not allowed inside. Outside also it's chargeable ₹50. The main entrance is on the main road. Google map shows the entrance through a side road don't follow that, ask the locals for directions. The place is very well decorated and maintained.

The place is nice to chill as couple or with families. The place is an masterpiece of heritage and in every corner you will feel the age old impression of one of the greatest poet ever. Lots of interesting facts and museum to explore from. This place is open from 10.30am-4.30 pm and they are very strict with timings. Photography is not allowed inside the building but you can do it in other places.

Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home is massive and has been converted into a museum. While it's interesting to see where he lived, there's not much historical value to the contents of the museum other than pictures. They charge you Rs 20 for the ticket and another Rs 50 for taking photos which is as ridiculous as it sounds. Guards are a bit rude as well. Visit this if you are in the area and have nothing else to do.

In every official site it says it opens at 9 am, but I happened to be here at 9:40 and it was not open. They asked me to come after 10:30 am. The management here didn’t even allow me to wait in their compound when asked if I could wait inside. A bit disappointed with the management, but it’s definitely a great place to explore! A place where great bits and pieces of literary history lives on. The ticket was 20₹ to enter the museum. Taking pictures inside the museum is restricted, however you are allowed to click pictures outside the museum in the lawns and the courtyard if you get a 50₹ ticket. Your gadget is stamped with a sticker. Definitely worth a visit for literary folks out there!

It is the house in which the poet and first non-European Nobel laureate, Rabidranath Tagore was born. It was built in the 18th century by Prince Dwarkanath Tagore (Rabindranath Tagore's grandfather). It is currently located on the Rabindra Bharati University campus at 6/4 Dwarakanath Tagore Lane Jorasanko, Kolkata 700007. Distance between Howrah Railway Station and Jorasanko Thakur Bari is 5Km and from Sealdah Railway Station approx 3Km.  It offers details about the history of the Tagore family. Rabindra Bharati University organizes regular cultural programmes on the poet’s birthday, Panchise Baisakh, and on other occasions, such as his death anniversary, Baishe Shravan. Every room, every picture, every object in this place has his memory associated with them. The atmosphere was very peaceful. There are two new galleries - about Poet's association with Japan and China. Jorasanko Thakurbari is a historical and cultural treasure in Kolkata. Must visit it.

Absolute 5 star for this place. The ticket price is Rs 20. Extra 50 rupees ticket needed for clicking pictures except inside the museum. The entry is from the west side of the building. In the Google Map it is given wrong. This place also serves as Ravindra Bharati University as written over the gate. Small place as a museum. But has lots of items to see. Only few that is one or two original clothes are preserved. A hall is there with large oil paintings. The family tree looks amazing. There are Chinese galleries, where, I saw Chinese visitors accompanied by local Chinese speaking guide. There are Thai and Japanese galleries too. You can go up to the second floor. Except the large courtyard there is also a smaller courtyard. There is a family Labour room. We need to open the shoes and submit large baggage for entering the museum or previous living rooms of Tagore family. Clicking pictures is strictly prohibited inside the building in spite of having 50 rupees camera ticket. You can see large proportion of Bangladeshi visitors. Also, a kind of cartoon exhibition was going on in the building just left from the gate after entering. There is also auditorium which was closed. The toilet is for free in the South side of the building.

A must visit place for every Indian. The birth place and residence of the great poet Rabindranath Tagore. As a Bengali and an admirer of Tagore, exploring his residence was a mesmerizing experience. There's a museum inside his residence which depicts the aspects of Tagore's life and his works along with his world tours. Even though some portions of his residence are under renovation, there're much more to see and experience. ❤️❤️

Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home turned museum is an absolute gem. It's not just a place to see old furniture and dusty portraits; it's a vibrant journey through the life and achievements of this iconic Bengali author. The exhibits are well-curated and engaging, bringing Tagore's story to life with personal belongings, manuscripts, and interactive displays. What I found truly inspiring is the focus on Tagore's global connections and his role as a bridge between Eastern and Western thought. You really get a sense of his vast influence and his enduring legacy.

This place has a story to tell. Individuals who can connect to our Great Poet Rabindranath Tagore, will pay a visit. Every wall every corner has a story. My mother being an ex-student, I had the urge to visit and experience the charm where this Great man had once lived. Recommended for enthusiasts.

Very calm and serene. It's so much like a bhool bhulaiya inside! We could gather a lot of knowledge about the great poet. Photography inside the museum is not allowed. Outside the museum, if you want to click pictures, they charge Rs. 50 for each gadget. For students, the price of the ticket is 10 rupees; for adults, 20 rupees. One should also keep the vaccination certificate in their mobiles.

serene atmosphere and fun to explore...would suggest it as a place for a family outing rather than one with friends however. well preserved house and interesting artifacts galore. light and sound show is great but it's not held in the monsoon season, so best to go from Nov-June. Have to pay Rs. 50 to take pics. Staff are quite helpful.

Outside you can take pictures. The nearest metro station is Girish park. It's just 7 mins walking distance from the metro station. Do visit in the winter season you will love it!!

Sitting in my newspaper office opposite St. James' Church I would often let my imagination run riot. The  twin spires of the most elegant of churches of Kolkata built in 1862 the spires dominated the skyline of the locality known as Jora Girja -জোড়া গির্জা. It was indeed built to replace an older one of the same name which was situated near Amherst Street. This earlier church, built in 1829 appears to have fallen into a state of disrepair and was declared unsafe for divine worship. It was decided to abandon any attempts to repair the Church. The church authorities, therefore, resolved to build a new church in a more convenient locality and, in conjunction with it, a school for the children of the neighbourhood. The project for building the new church got support and backing of Archdeacon Pratt, a keen educationist, who, with his influence, was able to acquire the garden house of Mr. Coates together with its spacious grounds for the purpose. At the same time, a smaller house on the grounds was also acquired for the residence of the Chaplain.  St. James school and Pratt memorial school are a testimony to Archdeacon Pratt's foresight. On school holidays one can visualise the old City and the time when there were people who could translate their wishes for the community with ease.

A beautiful experience you can have if you go there. Entry prices are 20 Rs for adults and 10 Rs for students and if you want to click photos inside the premises , then you have to pay 50 Rs seperately per device. So , very minimal and affordable cost to spend some beautiful moments out there. The ambience is so good that you will feel that peaceful vibe which will captivate you. Inside the Tagore's House it's a huge place and you will require some time to roam around and observe the whole area meticulously. You will be wondered and astonished for sure. So , if you are in kolkata , the city of joy and have some time , then take a look 🤗. Happy Exploring ✌🏻

The place is very beautiful and well maintained, but some parts are still under construction. The photography authorization charge is 50/- for ground floor, which I think is too much, because there is nothing much to see on the ground floor. And there is no photography allowed in the museum on the first and second floors. So photography charges should be kept accordingly. As it is the birthplace of Rabindranath Tagore, it would have been better to have some memorabilia of his birth and contemporaries. Mostly memories of his middle life and last life.

Jorasanko Thakurbari is a must-visit for anyone interested in Bengali culture and history. It was the ancestral home of the Tagore family, one of the most influential families in Bengal. The house is now a museum that showcases the lives and works of the Tagores. The museum is well-organized and informative. It has a variety of exhibits, including personal belongings, furniture, and artwork. There is also a section on the Tagore family's involvement in the Indian independence movement. I highly recommend visiting Jorasanko Thakurbari. It is a great place to learn about Bengali culture and history. The museum is well-maintained and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable.

It was a wonderful experience to visit the ancestral house of the Tagore's turned into a museum. It is within walking distance from Girish Park metro station. Tickets are 20/- each, children till 10 years exempted. Each of the room caters to a theme and are studded with rare invaluable pics and notes. It easily consumes half a day for a casual Tagore lover to delve into these. It was an exhilarating experience to say the least. Limited car parking is available, but if one has an option it is better to take the public transport route.

Thakurbari is like heaven for people with a literary background. The authorities are doing their best to maintain this heritage. Some new corners are added. The guards are very helpful. They can guide and are very good in telling the stories of every single thing. Foreign visitors can get an English-speaking guide The entry fee is only 20 rupees. One thing that disappointed me was the office in the basement of the house. It is not related to maintenance or any department related to the heritage site. It's essential to ensure that all aspects of the heritage site are properly maintained and managed to preserve its significance for future generations.

27th Dec 2020: Its just closed due to covid. And the authorities couldn't even make that clear on Google maps and other suitable platforms that they'll remain closed. Quite frankly, the lack of information isn't in favour of the people coming from far away places. :/ Sometime in Dec 2018: Great place, definitely bring in children and teenagers to learn about Kaviguru. Note: they don't allow to click photos for free.

Jorasanko Thakur Bari  in Jorasanko, North Kolkata, is the ancestral home of the Tagore family. It is the house in which the poet and first non-European Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore was born. The house has been restored to reflect the way the household looked when the Tagore family lived in it and currently serves as the Tagore museum for Kolkata. It offers details about the history of the Tagore family including its involvement with the Bengal Renaissance and the Brahmo Samaj. Apart from the heritage routine, Rabindra Bharati University organizes regular cultural programmes on the poet’s birthday, Panchise Baisakh, when thousands flock to Jorasanko Thakur Bari, and on other occasions, such as his death anniversary, Baishe Shravan. Jorasanko was one of the 31 thanas then recorded. Amongst the institutions in Jorasanko are – Adi Brahmo Samaj, the Jorasanko Bharati Natya Samaj, the Kalikata Haribhakti Pradayani Sabha, the Minerva Library and Oriental Seminary. Rabindra Bharati University, the third university in Kolkata, was set up in 1962 in the Tagore family's house at Jorasanko, primarily as a centre for music and fine arts, but extended subsequently to arts and humanities.

This place gives you a nostalgic feeling overall. Seeing the rooms where Rabindranath once stayed is so satisfying. If you reach here early in the morning, around 10.30-11:00 AM, the crowd will be less and you can enjoy the peace here. The entry fee is Rs 20. (For students -Rs 10 only if you show the id card) . Paying Rs 50 to take photographs only on the ground floor is not justified I felt. Otherwise it is a divine feeling to just sit on the thakur dalan, or stand on the balcony of thakurbari.

The museum beautifully showcases Tagore's life and works. Any Tagore lover can spend 4 or 5 hours easily going through the various galleries displaying Tagore, his family and artifacts from various countries that he visited over the years. The museum in recent times has expanded the number of galleries and they well maintained. There's really a lot to see here and one can visit this museum again and again if only to be inspired by The Guru's life and works.

A wonderful place of interest in this City of Joy. The museum houses a lot of artifacts, all maintained quite nicely. Faint Rabindra sangeet is constantly being played, which adds to the vibe of the place. For all Rabi Thakur anuragis, this is a must visit in the city. And in this era of pandemic, protocols are being followed nicely.

Jorasanko Thakur Bari  in Jorasanko, North Kolkata, West Bengal, India, is the ancestral home of the Tagore family. It is the birthplace of poet Rabindranath Tagore and the host of the Rabindra Bharati University campus. The Jorasanko Thakur Bari was built in the 18th century in Jorasanko in the north of Kolkata. The land on which this ancestral home stands today was donated by the famous Sett family of Burrabazar to Prince Dwarkanath Tagore, who was the grandfather of Rabindranath Tagore. The Rabindra Bharati University was established by the government of West Bengal in 1961 to commemorate the birth centenary of Rabindranath Tagore. The Museum has a wide-ranging collection. Galleries are devoted to the leading figures of Bengali Renaissance, including but not limited to Dwarakanath, Debendranath, Rabindranath, Aban Thakur, and Gaganendranath. A gallery displays artworks from the Bengal School of Art founded by Abanindranath Tagore.[2] Another shows portraits and paintings of the Tagore house and family by the Anglo-Indian school. The latter is called the Western Art Gallery. There are also galleries devoted to Rabindranath, showing his life, works and ideas. The poet-prophet's visits, tours, influence and relationships with offshore countries are shown in the respective Japan Gallery, China Gallery, Hungary Gallery, and the US Gallery. As a Bengali and an admirer of Tagore, exploring his residence was a mesmerizing experience. Location:-Ganesh Talkies, 267, Rabindra Sarani, Raja Katra, Singhi Bagan, Jorasanko, Kolkata, West Bengal 700007

Loved the visit. We had lot of young (12 - 18 yrs) international visitors, so we requested for a guide from their information office. The guide spoke eloquently in English and narrated us through historical times. Highly recommended visit. I was surprised that lot of my local friends did not know of the museum.

The place is of historic value for Bangla literature enthusiasts. The multi talented Rabindranath Tagore passed his life in this very same ground. The museum is kept as the house was lived room by room. Many unknown pieces of information were brought to my attention after visiting this place. Highly recommended place for the history and literature enthusiasts.

You will be impressed by the collections of Tagore hand-writing drafts if you’ve read some of his poetry. I was very touched by the letter to Gandhi. He revealed his ambition to making India better. You can’t get pictures inside. The only way to see is come by yourself. Remember to wear thick socks becuz the floor is cold and hard and it must be visited without shoes. Oh, young Tagore is handsome and talented >\\\<

Those who love and respect Rabindranath must visit this place once Although the university is on one side, a great museum has been built on the upper two floors of the original building. It takes a whole day to see and read everything here. There are toilets and drinking water facilities here for the visitors. Before entering the museum, if you have a bag with you, you have to leave it outside and turn off your mobile phone before going inside. The entrance fee is Rs. 20 per person, if you want to take a picture with a camera, you have to pay Rs. 50 most probably, no charge for mobile still photography. There is a light and sound show at 6 pm in the evening, tickets need to be purchased separately. Shows in Hindi are on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in Bengali.

Revisited the past with this awesome place. A must go if you want to learn more about Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home and his family. It's pretty difficult to reach there with maps, you'll have to ask the locals. It takes around 2 hrs to tour this place. Most of the time will be spent in the Museum. Overall you must visit this place to get to know more about Rabindranath's lifestyle, outfits, books, rooms etc.

Jorasanko Thakur Bari is the ancestral home of the Tagore family located in in Jorasanko (near Girish Park), North Kolkata. It is the house in which the poet and first non-European Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore was born and spent most of his childhood. It was built in the 18th century on the land donated by the famous Sett family of burrabazar to ‘Prince’ Dwarkanath Tagore. Apart from the heritage routine, Rabindra Bharati University organizes regular cultural programmes on the poet’s birthday, Panchise Baisakh, when thousands flock to Jorasanko Thakur Bari, and on other occasions, such as his death anniversary, Baishe Shravan.

I remember going to this church as a kid for founder's Day. It was the church we shared with St. James. Surrounded by a well kept garden it stood tall with all the arches and tall twin spires. The interiors are equally elegant. There's a spiral staircase leading to the floor above which was always reserved for the less fortunate middle school students who were way too excited about being present to bother about the heat(no fans) :D The sunlight filtering through the coloured glasses makes a very quaint, colourful halo on the floor. Imo it's definitely one of the prettiest churches in Calcutta. Do visit if you haven't :)

St. James' Church in Kolkata, India, is one of Kolkata's most elegant churches. Built in 1862. the twin spires of the St. James' Church dominates Kolkata's skyline. It is popularly known as Jora Girja, literally meaning twin church for its twin spires. The present church was built to replace an older one of the same name which was situated in Nebutolla Lane, near Amherst Street. This earlier church, built very much after the style and plan of St. Thomas’ Church, Free School Street, was consecrated by Bishop Reginald Heber on 12 November 1829. It appears to have fallen into a state of disrepair, due chiefly to white ants having eaten into the beams, and was declared unsafe for divine worship.

Couldn't go inside the place due to Covid restrictions. The place looked beautiful from outside and could only imagine how great it would from inside. This is the ancestral place of Rabindranath Tagore. The museum contains a family tree which we missed. Apparently every Tagore family memeber had a part to play in the Renaissance. An example of it is Thakurbari women bringing a change in the way saree is draped. They have immense contribution in the very fabric of Bengal culture

A beautiful experience you can have if you go there. Entry prices are Rs.20/- for adults and Rs.10/- for students and if you want to click photos inside the premises, then you have to pay Rs.50/ separately per device. So, the very minimal and affordable cost to spend some beautiful moments out there. But the staff is very rude and impolite. Previously it was under Rabindra Bharati University but now it is completely a museum. Here you can find rooms used by Rabindranath Thakur and his other family members and many articles, a car used by Tagore.

The ancestral home of the renowned poet-laureate has long been converted into a museum celebrating his life, achievements and impact on humanity. Although photography inside the building is not allowed, one can take pictures from the outside. The mansion or thakurbari is built like those of the landed gentry from times past, with different wings now converted to displays of Tagore's family, achievements, travels and compositions. This place is practically a pilgrimage for Bengalis and Indians alike. Be prepared to spend a couple of hours immersed in the history of his travels to various countries.

Here you'll get to know about his family, well being, his artistic career, his connections with other famous people, his achievements, the very lifestyle, the ethnicity of Kolkata and many more things. RBU is there. There are museums also. I could only gather this much photos because taking photos are prohibited in there. You'll have to pay for a ticket worth Rs.20 to get in there. And visiting hours are from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.

The name itself is romantic & evokes a sense of nostalgia. Jorasanko Thakur Bari is the ancestral house of the Tagore family. Rabindranath Tagore was born, lived & died here. Jorasanko Thakur Bari is a priceless heritage remnant. It’s constructed in the typical Bengali style. You will love the bright green & red facade! The Museum within, commemorating the life of Rabindranath Tagore, is called the Rabindra Bharati Museum. Apart from the entry ticket (INR 20), there is an INR 50 ticket to use mobile cameras within the premises but do note – photography inside the Rabindra Bharati Museum is prohibited. The Museum comprises galleries related to Rabindranath Tagore & to the Tagore family. In the galleries related to Tagore, you’ll find his possessions, photographs, sequence of events leading to his illness & last days, his relations with countries like China, Hungary, Japan & the USA. In the galleries related to the Tagore family, you’ll find family ancestry & photographs, Bengal School paintings, & Tagore house portraits. You can do justice to the Rabindra Bharati Museum only if you’re ready to invest at least three hours. As you tour the Museum, there are security guards who guide you on the right path & ensure there’s no noise/ unruliness. A couple of galleries had captions only in Bengali, making it difficult for non - Bangla speakers to understand.

It's easily accessible and properly marked on Google Maps. You have to buy an entry ticket. There are extra charges for camera but it's better NOT to pay it because you won't be allowed to take any pics in the museum galleries upstairs in any case. You can easily take pics of the main building from outside without paying for camera. If you pay, all you will be allowed to click is the inner courtyard. There is a lot of info about the family in general in the galleries, some furniture, crockery, and personal belongings. Paintings are mostly replicas barring the huge oil paintings of the family patriarchs. You have to take off your shoes downstairs to visit the upper floors. It's good for a day out in winter for locals and for outsiders who might want to know more about Tagore.

Jorasanko is a neighbourhood of North Kolkata, in Kolkata district, West Bengal, India. It is so called because of the two (jora) wooden or bamboo bridges (sanko) that spanned a small stream at this point Apart from the distinguished seat of the Tagore family, traditionally known as the Jorasanko Thakur Bari, it was also home of the Singhas (including Kaliprasanna Singha), the Pals (including Krishnadas Pal), and the families of Dewan Banarasi Ghosh, Gokul Chandra Daw, Narsingha Chandra Daw, Prafulla Chandra Gain, and Chandramohan Chatterji. "The area thus became the cradle of Bengal Renaissance." It was earlier known as Mechuabazar.

The museum is full of relics and artifacts of the great poet right from his childhood to youth, till his last days. The sheer sight of the bed in the room where he drew his last breath makes one feel surreal. Expect to witness numerous paintings by Abanindranath Thakur along with countless pictures, furniture and most importantly heart piercing words of Gurudev. The place is neatly maintained. The only nuisance is the guards yelling at people and throwing tantrums.

If we are talking about Bengal and it's literature, then the first name which came into our mind is the versatile genius Sir Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore passed his whole life in Jorasanko Thakurbari. In this house not only Rabindranath Tagore but also his grandfather Prince Dwarakanath Tagore, his father Sri Debendranath Tagore and his elder brother Sri Abanindranth Tagore spent their lives. There is a museum within this house from where you can know more about Rabindranath and his life, his contribution towards our society, to our world literature. In this museum you can know more about our ancient Kolkata and the unknown history of Tagore family. At evening you can enjoy a light and sound show of Tagore family and british era with the bilingual voice of Gulzar and Soumitra Chatterjee. If you love poetry, literature, Rabindranath and Bengal you should visit this place.

Some moments are so randomly pure that they touch you only for minute..grill deep in u and then leave you teary eyed, and u’ll never know why. I think that’s what we felt at the Rabindranath Tagore House.. Every room had so much peace/ knowledge/positivity and so much for us to take that we felt like an ant in front of all his achievements.. Each of us took a corner in his huge house, only to process that such a person even existed. A big bow to all those who still make his place look like home and not one percent like a museum. In a city far away from home, i found another H O M E 🖤

This place is very special for Bengalis and this place is very close to their heart . You'll definitely find a mental satisfaction visiting there. In the museum there are lots of stuffs related to Rabindranath Thakur. There you should definitely visit the room from where our Biswakabi started his journey of literature... If you want to take pictures, you have to take permission from the authority.

Tagore's place!!

As the name suggests the Tagore’s house is located in Jorasanko in North Kolkata. History has it that the house was where the famous non-European poet, Rabindranath Tagore, was born. Additionally, the place was the shelter for Mr. Tagore until his unfortunate demise in 1941. There’s no better museum to learn the long history of the Tagore family than the house they lived in.

St. James' Church, also known as Jora Girja (Bengali: literally meaning twin church for its twin spires in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, built in 1862, is one of most impressive churches in the city, and the largest protestant church that can accommodate about 600 people at a time in its prayer hall. The present church, replaced the older one of the same name which was situated in Nebutolla Lane, near Amherst Street. This earlier church was built using St. Thomas’ Church as model in style and design and was consecrated by Bishop Reginald Heber on 12 November,1829. The twin spires of the St. James' Church dominated the Kolkata's skyline. The church became unsafe for divine worship due to poor maintenance, lack of funds, etc and at one state, the wooden beams and other important structures were heavily damaged because of sustained termite attack. On August 23, 1858, when the restoration work had just begun, the roof caved in, causing heavy damages. As the church was too damaged to resume restoration work, the church authorities decided to have a new church built in a new locality along with a school for children. The historical church in the past had prominent vicars such as Basil Manuel and John Perumbalath, currently Archdeacon of Barking in the Church of England. God bless all of u....

There are 3 galleries , and each gallery gets progressively better. Had a wonderful time. Added bonus, it does have a lane where you can park your four wheeler in peace. Now make sure, that you have at least one vaccine doze certificate ready, as you are required to do so to enter the premise .

There is an entry fee of rs.20 and rs. 50 extra if you want to take photographs inside. So many rooms inside and the history has been uplifted beautifully. So take your time and travel in the past. There is a new covid protocol that is only 20 people are allowed inside at a time, so that creates queue outside and an even longer waiting time. So it is adviced that you reach the site early. This place is very calm and have very positive Bong(bengali) vibe within the place. Its very huge mansion. You can get the ticket at the for museum and 50rs extra for specific place photography. You can take your kids and elders to spend some good quality time. You would be asked to remove the shoes just before the museum. If possible read all the notes it's very rich in information which make you feel proud for such legendary poet and country. If you read patiently then it would consume easily you half of the day of your tour. Most of the rooms have air-conditioning or good ventilation. Carry your bottled water as I didn't locate any cafeteria. Also I didn't see any restroom or baby feeding area. No designated parkings for tourist but you can ask to the security guards for help. Most of the Security guards do speak English, some have bit rude behavior though but it's up to you how you take it i would suggest to ignore. No photography allowed inside the museum.
