Overall Rating: 5.4/10 The food and experience were good enough but didn't wow me. It was alright, not something I'd rave about. Atmosphere / Service: 8.2/10 The restaurant's distinctive setting is engaging from the moment you see the building and continues as you sit down and take in your surroundings. Initially unclear on the self-service format, a staff member helpfully called out instructions for self-seating and using the QR code for menu and ordering. The process was unexpectedly smooth, despite a typical preference for in-person ordering. The limited menu options were a minor drawback. Food: Margherita Pizza: 5.1/10 The pizza, expected to be a standout given the sparse menu, was just adequate. It arrived quicker than anticipated, hinting at a possibly hastened baking process. The main detractor was the amount of grease, which was excessive, though the base was nicely crispy, and the cheese seemed to be good quality. Bean Dip / Chips: 5.9/10 This appetizer was a pleasant surprise, providing a tasty complement to the pizza. The chips were seasoned with a unique blend that was initially enjoyable but became too strong after several bites. 3 Pokegyms and 1 Pokestop which gave the place a nice added value for Pokemon Go users. Value: 5.8 / 10 Considering the overall experience, the value seems appropriate, and there's some interest in giving the pizza another try in the future to see if the experience gives a different result.

The food is great, but the dining experience leaves a lot to be desired. Not having any physical menus is annoying enough as it is, but you also order on your phone as well (which isn't particularly intuitive, and I'm 29 with a masters degree). So, each person at the table ordered their food separately instead of a server putting everything in at one time. The water and napkins are self-serve. The only interaction with any sort of server was when someone delivered the pizza. When going to pay, they default the tip to 22%. Who am I tipping? I am happy to tip a server when we actually have one, but this was the same level of service and interaction I get at a fast food place with a kiosk. The pizza was delicious, but I would just order it to-go.

Delicious pizza, excellent beer selection, the friendliest staff and a great location! What more could you ask for? Pre-COVID, we spent many evenings sitting at the bar. During COVID, we have thoroughly enjoyed takeout and the outdoor seating - and really appreciate their current safety protocols. It is a great spot for families, date nights, group outings, all! We’re partial to the Spicy Vodka and Grandma Pie (and the best when they are combined…please bring that back!), but everything is amazing. This is our go-to neighborhood place and a Durham restaurant we recommend to everyone.

We ordered take-out: The Classic Margherita, Eggplant Alla Norma, Fried Chicken Pie and the Grandma Pie. $ 63.43 with taxes. No issues with the order. 1st time trying the restaurant. Their last Health Inspection was a 98 and the restaurant appeared clean. Each pizza was cooked perfectly. But....the crust and sauce were mild to taste and just not very flavorful. They loaded the Fried Chicken Pizza with too many hot peppers and too spicy for the family to enjoy. While the pizzas smelled and looked amazing...the pizza tasted average resulting in just three stars.

S tier pizza. Doesn't get better than this for pizza quality. Innovative ordering platform through Toast Tab. Great atmosphere with a full bar + indoor / outdoor seating if weather permits.

probably one of the best pizzas i’ve had. it was the dough that really made this pizza great. super thin, yet the crust is well risen and airy. great crisp and toppings were equally as delicious. i recommend the grandma pie and the vodka pizza. their ranch is also delicious.the lamb birria pizza was still good but not as good as the other two. it’s all order through phone which is pretty nice. staff and atmosphere was great! would love to come back.

My buddy brought me here, saying the pizza is great. We decided to split the softshell crab pizza which seemed a bit risky but man did they pull it off. It was way better than it had any right to be, and I'll never forget it. Truly impressed by that, plus the service was great and they've got great drink options.

Great value and so good!! They have vegan cheese and offered to switch the cream-based sauce for the tomato one for me on the mushroom pizza. Pizzas are pretty big and the mushrooms were so flavourful! Beware if you're coming on the weekend, came here on Friday night and we had to wait 50+ minutes for the pizza (we were warned tho)

Great visit with group of 7. Tried several different appetizers and pizzas and everyone was happy and full. Service was prompt and building was clean and well taken care of no issues. Would recommend, the parking can be a little tricky but plenty available in area

One of the best places to have a well made pizza around Durham. So many great options to choose from as well. The ambience is wonderful both indoor and outdoor. This is a nice place to enjoy delicious pizza in a relaxing atmosphere.

Durham is a small town with a lot of pizza options. We often have heated debates with friends which one is best... we would die on the Hutchins hill. Their spicy vodka is one of the most craveable pizzas we have ever had! The other big plus about Hutchins for us is the consistency. Whether you are picking up or dinning in, you can always expect a thin, crunchy crust with a slight chew and good sauce/topping/cheese ratio. We sometimes wish they had more variability in their appetizer options but the reality is the pizza is the star!

Showed up late, but was seated right away! Ordered two pizzas, they came out quick. we asked for them in a box so we could take what was left home. That was unnecessary, the pizza was EXCELLENT! We could not stop eating until it was all gone! Their pizza dough is the best pizza dough in the triangle, hands down! Make sure to try their eggplant pizza and the mushroom pizza! This place is amazing!

My goodness! I love this place! I’ve been to many pizza places in my life, and this is the best. It’s my second time here this week already and I will be back for more. Please try the Grandma Pie and the Spicy Vodka. But really, order anything off the menu and I bet it’d be phenomenal. The only con I can think of is that as a party of one, I can only finish half of a pie in one sitting. I wish there were smaller options for solo diners. Or “pizza flights” to try out more flavors. Anyways, that’s my problem not Hutchins’, haha!

This pizza is DELICIOUS! My husband and I ordered the hot honey to split and we didn’t have any leftovers. The atmosphere is great! Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. We got there shortly after they opened and the pizza came out super quick! We will definitely be back!

The food here was incredible. I went with my cousin who was in town for the weekend and she said it was the best pizza she's had in ages, and I can agree 100%. The crust was thin and crispy, but had so much flavor it. We also got 2 salads, large enough to share each one, and very tasty for a salad, you won't be disappointed. My cousin got the margarita pizza and she enjoyed it, but it seemed to have more than the traditional amount of cheese was her only comment. I got the salsa Macha pizza, but with vegan cheese and it was delicious, quite possibly the best vegan pizza I've ever had. It was just the right amount of spicy, and the rest of the pizza balanced it out. We each had left over salad and pizza we took home, and when we had it later it was still very good, which can't be said about all food you take home to finish later. Will be going back and recommending this place to everyone who wants a great pizza.

Quick service, reasonable prices, and yummy pizza. If you like thin and crispy pizzas, this place has it down. It was so good I wanted to get another pie to go, but I restrained myself since I doubted I could reheat it properly. Definitely a spot I'll be recommending and returning to. I'm looking forward to trying everything on the menu.

Loved this place. Seems pizza places are everywhere but this one sets itself apart. Great atmosphere. Bit of a learning curve for ordering.

Indoor/outdoor flex space is nice, glad we could bring our dog. Margherita Pizza was OKAY, but very greasy. Had to use SO MANY napkins to sop up the grease, and keep it from getting all over my shirt. The dough/crust was a bit flimsy and very wet, like it wasn't cooked all the way and couldn't withstand the toppings (which were minimal). I like a pizza that isn't super "floppy". Our dog was happy to help eat some slices. The fried polenta was DELICIOUS, definitely get that!

Fantastic vegan pizza with high-quality coconut based cheese. Got Grandma's pizza, which is the thicker crust, square pie - with fried eggplant, kalamata olives, and kale. So tasty. (Fyi- fried eggplant has egg in batter). Chill outdoor area with cool music on the speakers. Strong well drinks for 8$. The service was fantastic, and the pizza came out fast. They also have a scan and order option now, where you scan a qr code to order and have food brought out to the table. You can also order food and drinks at the bar inside.

This is a great spot for a drink and some GOOD pizza. They have a full bar but aren't able to make a few of the signature classic cocktails (no espresso martinis, no painkillers) I love the outdoor seating, they have tons of outdoor tables and some space inside. The pizza was really the star of the evening. We got the hot honey pizza and it was really delicious! Well balanced. I also loved the thin crust! The pizza isn't too cheesy which I appreciate as a lactose intolerant who still eats pizza every now and then. I will definitely be back here!

Hutchins Garage doesn't sound like your typical Italian restaurant. I can say the Grandma Pizza was spectacular. We also shared the Burrata Salad. Burrata cheese was really good. I will return to Hutchins Garage.

Easily a 10/10 pizza spot in downtown Durham! Very easy to find, with convenient parking just up the road. The atmosphere gives off nostalgic, good vibes! It’s self-seating, and you handle everything through their QR code. I grabbed my own to-go box since I wanted to save some for the next day. A lot of people were choosing their to-go option as well (you can park out front if you’re picking up). Did I also forget to mention their pizzas can be made vegan-friendly? 🥹 I got the hot honey pizza, and it was exceptional! My boyfriend and I have found our favorite pizza spot!

Wowza! This pizza was incredible! I’m new to the area and was not fully prepared to have my mind blown so fast. The beer selection and the bartenders are great! Highly suggest. My only regret is not getting a pizza for today since no leftovers were left last night.

My son, who attends Duke, wanted to give this place a 2.9- he’s eaten at a lot of places in Durham and was craving pizza. Didn’t quite meet our expectations. I actually liked the idea of ordering from the phone, though it sparked an interesting convo about a tip- considering drinks were self-serve. Our pizza was super tasty, but unfortunately overcooked. Prices were reasonable for food, though not a large selection of salads or apps. Drinks are pricey for the size. Cool building, but the atmosphere was meh. Lots of potential to be a cool place.

In response to Hutchins Garage reply, no, this is not about "table service", your menu being on an app, or having to order through said app. It is about your lack of customer service, and how you feel that the people who spend their hard earned money at your restaurant are simply a burden on you. This is evident in your response here, and to the many other negative reviews you've received. More often than not, when someone mentions a poor experience you immediately go on to attack them. This is right in line with how you deal with customers in real life as well. So again, for folks reading this review and trying to decide if you should give Hutchins a try: Just don't. There are plenty of other terrific restaurants in Durham that are more deserving of your business. ------- Original review: Food is good, customer service is horrendous. Options are abundant for good pizza in Durham, so do yourself a favor and skip Hutchins.

This was our first time here and we loved it. I ordered the shiitake and portobello pizza and my husband and mother in law ordered a grandma’s pie. It was lovely. I have a special fondness for this restaurant now because they have a place to note nut allergies and dairy allergies. As someone with both, I appreciate places that note allergies. We will be back soon.

Everything about Hutchins is great. First off, you seat yourself, then scan the QR code on your table. You can order everything from your phone and it all comes out really quickly. We had the margherita pizza, a custom pizza, the fried polenta with hot honey and several drinks, including Aperol Spritzes, Negronis, and a "Campari Sun", all of which were made perfectly and delivered faster than pretty much any place I've been. We thought the pizzas were going to be small, personal pan style pizzas, but they are pretty big. Each one could feed 2 - 3 people. They gave us a take out box, though, and it was still delicious later. The vibe was excellent. Not too loud, bright, or busy. All of the food runners and bartenders were super nice and attentive. Also, the music was a 10/10 for me (Talking Heads, Al Green, Wilson Pickett, etc.).

Spicy vodka is really good. It does have a bit of a kick to it but it’s not that bad. I also like spicy food so I may be biased. If you are really really sensitive to spicy foods, you might not like it. But it’s worth the try!

Best pizza in the area and a large part of what makes me not miss living in NYC. Service is fast, efficient. Salad is overlooked gem. Beer selection is very good, and food comes fast when they aren't slammed. Atmosphere is about perfect for what it is, where it is. Pizza is (mostly) the super thin crust, crunchy, Brooklyn crazy hot oven style that cooks a pizza in 3-4 minutes. Been coming here on the reg for years, will continue doing so. Friend keep recommending other places, and I dutifully try them, but I keep coming back here.

I came as I know one of the owners. My wife is gluten free and the pizza crust t is amazing. Best gluten free pizza she's had to date. And the wheat stuff is pretty darn fine too. Beers selection is great, the Margareta are on-point . If you want some darn good food from good people check this place out.

I gotta say… this may be the best pizza in Durham. Also, excellent salads. Very cool atmosphere. Only down side is the parking. But COMPLETELY worth a walk…. Do yourself a favor and try this joint!!

Such an incredible atmosphere here. Takes you away from everything else in the world while you’re here eating. Excellent service! Bartender whipped up a special drink for me since I don’t drink sodas! Food is some of the best pizza I’ve had! Absolutely amazing!!

Hands down the best place to get pizza in Durham (and possibly the triangle!). The pizza is THE best, the staff is friendly, the atmosphere and drinks are great..great spot to check out and keep coming back!

Had my first Grandma's Style Pizza here at Hutchins in Durham, NC. My "One Bite" score is a 7.6 Great sauce, crispy, but the under carriage could have used more char.

Bartender greeted us and he was really cool and informative. We had no issues getting a table outside on Saturday just before 6pm. We found street parking on a side street across from boxcar for free. Ordered with the QR code and the pizza comes out so fast and fresh. The beet salad was great and the grandma's pizza was by far the best pizza I tried (we ordered 4 pizza's, our least fav was the mushroom pizza). I dont frequent downtown Durham, but if I want pizza, I would go here again and order the beet salad and grandmas pizza. Good beer selection too!

Super cool spot. Repurposed an old garage as a pizza spot and it’s decorated in such a good way that something will catch your eyes on every wall. Pizza is fantastic and the staff were extremely kind and accommodating. Go try it!!!

Food is great! The biggest issue we have had is that when we order the food we don’t leave a tip on our cards. The past two times, we are charged more that what we originally paid. Turns out both times, someone manually entered a 20% tip on our cards. Sounds unethical to me. For example, our bill was $37 and we left paying $37 but we checked our bank statement a few days later and we were charged $45. Post Owner Response: I understand if we left it open. We didn’t however, we get the email of the receipt from the online system used to order showing as if it is a closed bill. It doesn’t make sense we get a receipt before the bill is closed.
