I’ve been here not less than four times. It was recommended by a friend, and they say it has been around in Ashfield for many years. The prices are reasonable, and the taste is authentically Shanghai-style. Both the dumplings and stir-fried dishes are made fresh on the spot. In this age of mechanized mass production, being able to enjoy handmade dim sum feels amazing. The pan-fried pork buns are probably made with leavened dough, with the folded side facing upwards, and although they don't have an excess of that much broth, they have a refreshing taste, with the dough being fluffy and the bottom crisped to a golden brown. The Shanghai style Pork & Veggies fried rice with is even better, and it contains both savory preserved meat and sausage, making it exceptionally delicious. A dim sum restaurant worth trying!

Came here for a late dinner and it was great! The workers were so lovely and friendly, which I didn’t expect given how late it was in the evening. We ordered the Shanghai spicy beef noodle soup and handmade fried noodles with chicken and vegetable. We also had the xiao long bao and prawn hargow. Everything came out so quickly and it was delicious. Coming back here to satisfy my late night dumpling and noodle craving 🤝✨🥟🍜

Ordered some steamed prawn dumplings, xiao long bao and shanghai noodles. It was $33.40 altogether without the drinks. Just your average Chinese dumpling joint, which I believe they hand-make their dumplings. Decently priced, service was friendly and efficient. Some spelling errors in the menu but not too difficult to decipher what they are on about, just that my table was abit sticky. Food was alright, just your regular dumplings that came out hot and the shanghai noodles had good flavour with spaghetti? noodles (not sure if it's meant to be).

Finally return to Shanghai Night and their food remain as good as my last visit a decade ago. We visited at lunch time Saturday but surprisingly we were the only dine-in customer. From memory this place is always full of people. We ordered pork buns and pork dumplings, as well as their dan dan noodle and XO rice cakes. Their pork buns are probably the best in Sydney. The bun itself was soft and fluffy. The meat has a nice texture and the bun juice inside was full of flavour. I also like their rice cakes, although i wished it was more “XO” (spicier with more scallop taste). Overall it was a very good feed at a really good price point and we will definitely return.

Just your average Chinese dumplings place - casual tables and atmosphere. The ladies in the kitchen are busy making dumplings non-stop. Xiao long bao was juicy and deliciously full of pork flavours. Pan fried pork and chives dumplings are also good value for money too. The only disappointment was the recommended Shanghainese spicy noodles soup that tastes very bland. Food came out rather quick as they are quite busy with online orders. $34 for 3 dishes are such hard to find these days - surely will come back to try other types of dumplings.

Good food at affordable prices. The xiao long bao are divine, thin skin with a delicious surprise burst of soup in the dumpling itself. The pan fried pork buns are a must try as well. Not as busy as new Shanghai but it’s a good alternative if you don’t want to wait. The food is just as good and more value for money

Food was excellent and came out quick. Decor is basic but that’s not what you come here for. Minor problem with one of the items but they rectified it right away. Good prices and portions, which suits the big eater. Would recommend.

Authentic handmade dumplings and Chinese food. I had the steamed vegetable dumplings and Xiao Long Bao. Dumpling skin has good texture and the dumpings are tasty. Disappointing they don't offer a vegetarian pan fried dumpling nor vegetarian pan fried mini buns. Also had the black sesame glutinous rice ball. The balls themselves were good but it's served in plain boiling water which is a bit lazy as usually it should be a ginger sugar syrup of sorts. Wouldn't order that again. Good, no frills authentic dumpling place overall.

Absolutely delicious, service was fast and friendly. They are so accommodating. The pan friend pork buns were scrumptious. We also ordered the pipis with ginger and shallot and the sauce on this was mouthwatering. The soup dumplings and the salt and pepper tofu was a winner as well. Everything we ordered was superb. We came around 6ish and didn’t have to wait long for a table either.

Fantastic place for Shanghainese food. The pan-fried pork buns were great. The were crispy and the meat inside was savoury and juicy. The prawn dumplings had a good amount of prawn and were good. The Shanghai noodles were savoury and well made. The scallion pancake was just fine. Prices are also affordable which is a plus. Food came out fast.

I have been here before quite some years ago and I didn’t enjoy my experience. Since then, I always went next door instead (where the massive lines are). However…. recently been buying my baos and dumplings here as takeaway and really enjoyed them, so went back for a sit down family meal today. I can report back it was a fantastic, scrumptious and mouth watering meal!! And can I be brutally honest, must more nicer than next doors food so skip the queue and give this place a chance! Only thing I would suggest to NOT order the congee as it was extremely watery and not much quality or quantity. Every other dish made up for it though as they were amazing!! The old Cantonese waiter (in a Shanghainese restaurant - very bizarre!) can’t crack a smile for the life of him - he is selective who he does use his customer service skills with so you may be his target type - comes across as “blunt” and best to speak to him in English or Cantonese as he has difficulty understanding Mandarin but I’m here for the food so I didn’t mind too much. Overall I would return over and over and over again simply for the satisfying food.

Best get in as soon as opens as long queue and wait times for lunch and dinner on weekends. Service is a bit slow, but the food is outstanding. Was so into the food, we forgot to take pics of most dishes. Dumplings and buns are spot on. Great main dishes as well. The fried rice is outstanding. Nice tea as well.

Enjoyed having dinner with friends here. Plenty of options on the menu, portions are big and can be shared by 2 people. The fried tofu us the best but also enjoyed the mongolian beef with rice. Bit disappointed with the portion of my lemon lime bitters drink as my glass was not filled to the brim as with other drinks. Atmosphere is good and friendly, service is excellent and prompt. Staff friendly. Overall an enjoyable experience.

Unfortunately their chicken and veggie stir fry was just plain ingredients in salt water soup and there was no flavour or sauce, just excessive plain salt in plain water. Very disappointing. I couldn't even finish the meal.

Busy, buzzing, no fuss Chinese restaurant with a very extensive menu and good value offerings. Food was very tasty. Service was prompt. You don't come here for the atmosphere, lighting or decor - the food speaks for itself. Complimentary Chinese tea is a nice touch.

Food was amazing. Service was great and such great place to chill out and enjoy these lovely dishes. Will be back again. Lamb and leek dumplings are our go to.

Best place for Xialongbao (steamed pork dumplings). It has a light skin with a really nice broth inside. The pork filling was nice and tender. Also had the pan fried pork buns. A crispy bottom and nice chewy texture on top. Pork filling was nice and tender

I recently visited Shanghai Night Ashfield and overall, my experience was a mix of positives and negatives. While the food taste was great to excellent, I was disappointed with the slow service. The main drawbacks of my visit was the slow service. From the moment I placed my order, it took a whopping 45 minutes for the food to arrive at my table. This long waiting time was frustrating and left me feeling impatient. I noticed that this issue was mentioned in some of the reviews on their Google page, and it seems like it's not an isolated incident. Despite the slow service, I must commend the food taste, which was great to excellent. The flavors and presentation of the dishes were outstanding, and it was evident that the chefs put effort into creating delicious meals. This aspect of my visit was the highlight, and it seems like many other customers also appreciated the excellent taste of the food. In conclusion, my recent visit to Shanghai Night Ashfield had its ups and downs. The food taste was excellent, but the slow service was disappointing. I hope that the restaurant takes steps to address the issues with service and provide a more pleasant experience for customers in the future.

I got myself some vegetarian spring rolls and vegetarian dumplings. Both tasted really good! The personnel was okay. There isn't really an atmosphere but I got take-away anyway.

Nice food. Portion is large. We ordered one noodle each, and a plate of fried dumplings. Had difficulty to finish all the food. Next time should order less carb and more veges :D Crowded. Lucky to get a seat. Correct bill given. Due to bad experiences at restaurants i always calculate first by myself. 40.4 for two. Not expensive.

Ashfield has a lot of good options for dumplings. I can here because there cheap and normally super fast. I came here on Saturday night. It was pretty busy. The service was slow the Xiaolongbao was lacking something it wasn’t as juicy or much ginger like other places. I had a side ginger Chinese broccoli. The chilli oil was just oil just chilli in it was a big let down. It’s going down hills a little bit :-(

3.5 Stars. The prices are quite cheap but you definitely get what you pay for. It's like the no frills version of New Shanghai or Lilong and you definitely feel this and taste this when dining here. Would still come back though if we needed a fix of cheap and cheerful Chinese food.

Ashfield's quite a famous spot for Shanghainese restaurants, particularly those that specialise in hand-made dumplings. There's a notorious line up of three neighbouring restaurants with a very similar name (Shanghai Night, New Shanghai, and New Shanghai Night) 🤣. How they came to be next to each other, how they came to have such similar names, and whether there's beef between them? I don't know. But shameless plug - we checked out all three restaurants last year for the 'Best Dumplings in Ashfield' video on my You Tube channel and this one turned out to be my overall favourite! It's one of those homey, friendly, family owned restaurants with minimal decoration. You know the ones. Husband and wife both working, and the child rocking up after school to sit at a table in the corner LOL. But one thing's for sure - the dumplings are delicious! Simple but done well, and very well-priced too. Ever since our first visit, I've always gotten the pan-fried pork dumplings, the pork xiao long bao (soup dumplings) and the steamed pork and chive dumplings. The pork and chive filling is the stand-out for me everytime. I'd think you can get it pan-fried too. One thing I love about Shanghai Night in particular is the dumpling skin. Not too thin, not too thick. Just enough to make sure the dumpling doesn't break apart when picking it up. Really, the perfect bite. They also have this light and slightly spicy pre-made soy vinegar sauce if you ask for it! If you've been to Ashfield before and know of these three restaurants, which is your favourite? 🙂 📍Shanghai Night, Ashfield
