This is a very relaxing outdoor garden that is wonderful to visit in the spring or summer time. I came in August and it was a hot day, so I would recommend bringing a hat if you want to walk around. I would highly recommend the bamboo forest, which was my favorite part of the gardens. It is free to visit and parking is also free. Be aware that you need to leave before close because they lock the gates right when the park closes.

Very nice garden and woods to walk around. Beautiful flowers and plants. At the time of our visit, the gardens needed weeding and I would have liked more labels to identify the plants. But we really enjoyed this peaceful area.

Visited on a grey, cloudy but warm Sunday in May. Absolutely beautiful place to walk around, and hike. Wonderful trees, flowers, birdsong, lots of trails.

Went for a walk at Rutgers Gardens today (end of May). There were lots of labeled trees, bushes, and flowers. In bloom were dogwood trees, peonies, azaleas, herbs, magnolias, irises, and bleeding hearts to name a few. There were quite a few benches and gazebos to rest in the shade. Saw lots of birds and chipmonks. A sign by the bamboo forest even mentioned bears. The overflow parking and restrooms were closed, which didn't make me very happy. However we did find a port-a-potty. Overall it was a pretty nice place to take a walk and enjoy nature.

Nice garden overall. Feels like it needs some upkeep in places. More vine than Holly in the Holly garden. The bamboo forest was amazing and eerie. While we were there a blue heron flew low through the garden and it was magical.

It's a very pretty garden, as you can see on the multiple pictures below. For a "regular Joe" like me, who doesn't really understand the difference between the species, I just wished it was multiple gardens spread across. It's a great spot if you're in the area looking for some time to relax a bit, I'm just not sure if it's worth a long drive. They're dog friendly, so we met quite a few puppies during our visit. Stop and smell the flowers if you're around!

Pretty chill spot for a picnic or nice pictures. I really like this place because it's free, clean, has free parking, and no one's stopping you from laying out a blanket and having a picnic here. Definitely worth checking out!

This place is absolutely stunning! It's love at first sight for me. If you go, please pick up your trash. I'd hate to see this place turn into another NJ dump.

We are so lucky to have this little bit of heaven nearby. There is nothing specific to do. Just walk around and enjoy nature. There are forest trails, little nooks with benches all over and the bamboo forest is a treat. And it's free!

I absolutely love Rutgers Gardens, especially on overcast days. You can walk through the property and listen to the birds sing. The gardens are well maintained and perfect viewing for a mental health day. The Cook's Market on Fridays is wonderful, too! A great opportunity to support local businesses and purchase fresh foods!

This place is a short ride from my job and I finally got the chance to go to the gardens. We started with the bamboo forest which from the moment you stepped into it you could feel a refreshing temperature change. The coolness was welcomed. As we walked around we came across a creek which we crossed over. Closed shoes are best in this area and be aware of ticks. The flower gardens were buzzing with different types of bees in addition to numerous types of butterflies. A great place to take pictures. And the lily pond delighted us with the sound of frogs grunting at us. If walking is an issue, they have numerous benches around the garden where you can take a break, many of them are in the shade. Worth a stop if you are in the neighborhood and all you need is an hour, more is better, to appreciate this oasis.

Great place. Lots of cicada husks. Big green chairs. Frogs. Cool flowers. Pollinators. Did get some bug bites but won't hold it against them

Beautiful scenery! I had to walk around for a little while to find the gardens but when I did it was well worth it! I also found a better area to park and see everything. I hope to be able to explore the bamboo area when tick season dies down.

Entrance and path to actual gardens not clearly marked from parking lot. Map at parking lot (there are 2 lots, not sure which one I was at) gives no indication of where you are and what direction the main gardens are situated; otherwise, a must visit to experience the lilac garden!

Moved to the area and decided to take a look at the gardens for Father's Day. The gardens are a peaceful way to spend the day walking around. I recommend people go there for a nice day with their family. The three stars is more for expectations, the Gardens did look like it could use some work. I liked the breadth and depth of plants that were there but a lot of them just looked like they had not been taken care of. When I went, the water feature area was under repair and also looked unkept. The real standout was the bamboo garden which looks like it was taken care of except for some garbage that was lying around it. Overall it was a nice day and we enjoyed walking around the gardens.
