This is fast becoming my favourite roast in Bristol, everyone gets a yorkie and all the trimmings. Really friendly and lively atmosphere, can get busy on a Sunday so I recommend booking.

Actually found this place on a whim - was strolling past and me and my friend wondered into the beer garden (was drawn in by some sweet graffiti!). Lovely pub, delicious pints, and a great atmosphere will definitely be coming back here :)

Lovely intimate venue, with limited but delicious food. There is a fair amount of seating indoors and a large outdoor area too. Splitting hairs, food took a while to arrive, but was delicious when it did. The katsu sauce was cold, but I'll forgive it as we had a large and complex order. Chicken, rice and chips were all hot and delicious. There are good options for non meat eaters too. This is a charming local pub, close to the city centre, and you won't be disappointed. The staff are lovely, so it's a worthy stop on your tour, and you can even get some food too.

The place is nice with a covered beer garden (really nice at this time of the year), staff was very nice with us too but the prices have gone a bit high and the food is all vegan, apparently the old meaty burgers were spectacular and the current ones are ok but nothing especial

We left the Volunteer Tavern feeling underwhelmed by the food and disappointed by the attitude of the staff. Not sure if something has significantly changed recently or if we had an unusually bad experience as the other reviews don't seem to add up to us. We ordered 2 meals, one of which arrived swiftly, the other was given very reluctantly about 40 minutes after the first, once we had asked several times. As if the delayed food wasn't annoying enough, there was no cheese in the burger, and no apology throughout. Great. A simple sorry can go a long way, and acting as if our presence was a hassle to you doesn't seem like a great way to operate. 'The first living wage pub', perhaps you need to pay them a little more! (Edit : Just wanted to add that the chap actually bringing the food out was really nice.)

Best Sunday lunch in Bristol. Great and friendly atmosphere. On sunny days, you can also chill at the beer garden. The portion that is served at the Volunteer Tavern is absolutely huge. It will feed the most hungry people and it is absolutely delicious!

This is very local to us, so we do appreciate them for what they do. Of course staff are very kind. Garden/Nature views are extremely nice, and the little opens rooms with benches are great. They always do different kind of menus here, but at the moment they have an only Vegan Menu. I am definitely not vegan, but Won’t complain… the food was nice and has lots of options to choose from. One thing that could be done better is their Fries… if you are going to serve an only vegan menu please serve some proper nice and fresh fries… ours seemed to be the frozen chips you get from Tesco and throw them in the oven.

Popular place, especially the beer garden which is always busy and has a great vibe. Inside is quite small but I've never stayed inside! Great beer and food (although not tried it since it stopped being fully vegan), fast service. Great Bristol pub.

Busy but cozy pub. IPAs are nice. Pays a living wage to staff which is good. I like the decor inside and the outdoor seating area. Upgraded from 4 to 5 stars as I have now been here several times and it is a good spot for a drink.

Loved the place! Great music being played (Bonobo for the win), all the staff were super friendly, the food was tasty and they have a great selection of beers! Also, really cosy garden in the cold weather!

A wonderful community pub with a nice selection of beers, and excellent Sunday roast. Would happily make this my local if I lived nearby. Staying within 10 minutes walk to this venue and knowing of their listing in the Camra Beer Guide, I made a beeline for this cosy community pub, literally within 5 minutes walk of Cabot Circus, and was not disappointed. The beer on cask was excellent and included choices from Plain Ales, Arbor, Bristol Beer Factory and Purity - largely on the lighter side (pale ales and IPA). There are also 3/4 keg lines in addition to the standard choices of lager and a beer fridge. The cask beers I tasted were all in excellent condition and at a good temperature. The atmosphere on a Saturday afternoon was relaxed, with a few regulars at the bar; although the bar staff were busy as there was a birthday party in the outside area out the back. Food on Saturdays consists of Sliders n Sides, and looked good from what I saw, but I was hankering after one of their talked about Sunday roasts and so I booked a table (recommended for Sunday lunch as it got quite busy around 2pm) and came back. The small looking kitchen is effectively taken over by other businesses- Sunday roasts were provided by All The Trimmings. I had slow cooked pork belly with a side of Cauliflower Cheese and apple sauce: it was one of the very best roasts I’ve had. Everything was well cooked, the pork belly was soft and tender and flavoursome as was the crackling. Lovely Yorkshire, a good portion of greens and superbly cooked roasties. The cauliflower cheese side is for 2 people but it was too good to waste! Desserts are on offer as well. I thought it was very reasonably priced as well, with my order including a pint coming to £23 roughly. I read in the toilet a poster that said the manager, Amy, is moving on to pastures new and they are on the look out for someone to replace her. What was interesting was that both volunteer and hospitality sector experience was being sought, which illustrates the community focus of this establishment. Anyway, by the looks of things whoever replaces them will have their work cut out, because this is one of the best examples of a community pub doing everything right. Long may it continue. If you get a chance to visit this pub, absolutely do!

Popped in for an impromptu lunch with family, mainly as we have a dog. What a warm welcome we received, there was a gig being set up but we were served a lovely meal from the extensive vegan menu. A good find and would highly recommend the Volunteer Tavern

Went for the famed Sunday roast. It was average (the roast potatoes were delicious though). And about three tables who came in after us were served ahead of us.

Oops, I only left a rating and some lovely human from the Volley has responded, so I feel I ought to say a bit more! This is a smashing little pub with a very respectable range of drinks - I've had some excellent beers in here especially. Lovely atmosphere inside and the outside space is lovely - someone's really made an effort to make it comfortable. Haven't eaten here in ages but the last time I did, the roast was on point. And the people are really sound. The team here have done an amazing job at making a go of this place in a bit of Bristol that's a bit off the beaten track, and everyone involved deserves huge credit. We've just moved offices so it's now pretty much our local, so hopefully I'll be able to come in a bit more!

Quaint local pub in the town centre. Friendly staff, good selection of beers, arrived after the kitchen closed but they were happy for us to order our own food in 👍

We popped in for a Sunday roast this week having found the Volunteer Tavern almost by accident. Both the food and atmosphere were amazing. It had a wonderful community pub feel and the staff clearly work hard to make it a relaxed, fun and friendly experience for customers. There’s also a hidden gem for Simpsons fans. We’ll be back next time we are in Bristol!

We tried the new menu on opening day and we’re blown away ! Fresh, vibrant flavours & exciting new combos : never had nachos like that before . The cauliflower wings were certainly big enough to share . I went for Buffalo sauce which I thought was medium spiced though my dinner date rated then as very spicy 🥵 Staff were great too Definitely check out La Cocina food and spread the word ! Huge thanks

  • 5/5 Malika K. 8 months ago on Google
Amazing 100/100 roasts. Me and my friend had a range of roasts vegetarian pork and Beef and all were amazing. We were told our roasts were going to take a little longer which was okay and they gave us extra cauliflower cheese to make up for it. I will defo be returning for some cheesecake !!

Wonderful vibe, cheap drinks, friendly staff, regular quiz nights and board games aplenty. This place is absolutely amazing. I come here with my friends and always have a good time. I would 100% recommend this place for anyone looking for an enjoyable but relaxed night out.

  • 5/5 Jessica S. 1 year ago on Google
We had Sunday roast (beef) it's clearly a popular place, but we got there early, so we managed to get maybe the only table that wasn't reserved. I would recommend booking a table for sunday lunch. The staff were friendly and I thought the food and drinks were reasonably priced and very tasty so no complaints from me.

Great selection of beers and ciders with a nice covered outside seating area. Friendly staff, community oriented. The current kitchen (Lonely Mouth) is fantastic and produces some of the best Japanese Street food in Bristol.

  • 5/5 Peter S. 2 years ago on Google
Visited for an overdue catch-up with friends, last Saturday. Has a classic pub feel to it, really friendly staff, who (unasked) brought water for my dog and fussed her up. Great beer choices; I had to stick with the Gorge Best as I was so taken with it I couldn't countenance the thought of trying a different one. Brilliant pub.

  • 5/5 Freddie P. 1 year ago on Google
Lovely staff, good selection of local beers, decent music on the stereo (had to ask at the bar what was playing cos I liked it). Lonely Mouth food was great, really good portion sizes, you wont go hungry and packs plenty of flavour. Will be back!!

Amazing place, so friendly & great vibe here. Staff very knowledgeable and the Sunday vegan roast is the best my partner & I have ever eaten. Seriously, everything was cooked to perfection👌 we has 1 vegan nut roast & 1 vegan tart each & then shared, both were so good, when I return I still couldn't pick just one! Bravo chefs!!!❤❤👏👏❤❤

Outdoor venue so a bit too cold for me. Service was brilliant by friendly bar maid. 🍺 mediocre. Other punters seemed to think it was okay to smoke freely. Sat in the middle of the outdoor space so surrounded by a veil of smoke. Left after one pint.

Lush place to chill with friends. Very cosy inside, and the outside usually has a great atmosphere and looks very pretty in the evening. Very laid back. They have a large range of pale ales, shame there's never any amber ales though. The food pop ups are tasty but quite expensive for what they are.

  • 1/5 Panos E. 3 years ago on Google
Went to the pub. Realised the bad service from the beginning. Took them ages to take an order. I was walking to the beer garden with my mask and was told off that I couldn't visit the beer garden. Long queues on the toilet which didn't have soap. Some people walking without masks. So under covid restrictions, a public place with a few tenths of clients everyday is not concerned if the clients do not wash their hands or wear masks. I'm paying the same price for a drink without the service or the safety that I deserve.

Tsukemono food now being served here. Nice cosy pub with a good selection of drinks and a very big beer garden with heating, as limited space inside the pub for seating due to the new Covid-19 restrictions. Overall, nice atmosphere and local pub.

  • 3/5 Blank G. 3 years ago on Google
This place had an atmosphere before covid and now... Well with the covid marshal on the door and not being able to move that much it's really not the same vibe oh and the roasts have never been that great.

  • 5/5 Bernice H. 3 years ago on Google
One of the few pubs that I have been to that have retained atmosphere with the new regulations 👏🏾👏🏾. Staff great, attentive, polite. Pop up food awesome, as always.

  • 3/5 Brett E. 3 years ago on Google
We arrived here this evening on the understanding it's Corona, but never been here before so moved three times to where my assistant dogs felt comfortable. To be told by a member of staff that I couldn't keep moving, I apologized but felt uncomfortable to wanna stay so not sure I'd recommend this establishment because I wasn't recognised or even acknowledged to why or where I moved to free tables no one was sitting there.... Very misunderstood bar Staff on that night 😬
