Al’s South Street Is Thee Best Sub Shop In Boston Bar None. Their Chicken Pesto Sub Is Fit For A King. Their Grilled Chicken Is Cooked As If It Is Baked In A Pyrex Dish Like I Cook My Chicken At Home. So Juicy And Tender. The Locomotive Runs On Diesel, The Engineer Runs On Al’s!

One of the better "bang-for-your-buck" lunch spots in Downtown Boston. Great sandwiches, both hot and cold, for around $8. If you want to go here, try to go BEFORE 11:30. This place is fantastic AND cheap, therefore extremely popular. If you wander in at 12:30, get ready to stand in a big line. But even if you do get stuck in the line, they crank out sandwiches like you wouldn't believe, you won't be wanting too long. There are two sizes of sandwiches: small and large. You only need a small sandwich for lunch, it's plenty of food. The BBQ sandwich is great, as well as the chicken pesto. If you like buffalo chicken, you can't go wrong with the Ariana.

The subs are some of the best in Boston- a lot of choices on the menu- and they’re really quick with getting your order ready. Plus the subs are massive and not too expensive-Would highly recommend checking this place out! Also ordering online is definitely the way to go if you can.

Al’s South Street is THE BEST. It was recommended by a friend as I was going to be in the area. The sandwiches are BEYOND delish. I had the Lady and it was so fresh. My husband had the steak sub and he said it was the best he’s ever had. The service was incredible. I recommend It highly, 5 stars.

Ordered a sandwhich and finished it there. Had grease all over my hands. Asked cashier for key to restroom to wash my hands. (I cannot stand the smell of food on me after eating on my face and hands) Lady asked me if I was planning on ordering and the woman next to her chimed in saying I had already ordered. The woman then proceeded to ask me if i was "planning on doing anything weird in there". I replied thats fine I'll use restroom in my building. A once regular weekday customer - I will no longer be coming back to either of their two locations and encouraging my coworkers and friends to do the same. P.S. If I could give less than one star I could.

Delicious! Had the pesto chicken and the chicken was juicier than a thanksgiving dinner political debate. 10/10

Personally think this is the best sandwich place in Boston by far. I've never had a bad sandwich from them (and have been going here for years), the service is always incredibly fast, and the prices are somehow still pretty cheap despite the large serving size. Best tuna salad, chicken salad and Italian subs I've ever had.

Fresh ingredients, employees have great personalities, quick service, out of this world flavor, not ur typical shaved meat ( tender REAL meats), made to order and more bang for ur buck! Can't believe the size of these true SUBMARINE SANDWICHES! THANK U ALS!

I must have looked like a deer staring at headlights because Al himself welcomed me to the joint, and I didn't even process it until I walked away with my "small" sub in hand. Despite my raging hunger, I didn't even open the chips because I was SO determined to finish my awesome steak and cheese. Note to self, remember to grab a couple napkins on the way out. No disappointment here!

I order from Al's for a staff lunch, and its hard to know where to begin. The staff were all so kind, responsive, professional and easy to work with. The food was amazing. We were trying to accommodate numerous food restrictions, and we were able to easily find delicious options on the menu. They were also very generous in their serving sizes. We went with the smaller of the 2 sandwich options and staff were splitting them in half, and saving more for later! My favorite part was the bread, oh my goodness! It was so delicious I ended up emailing the staff after the event asking about their bread. It turns out they bake it fresh , in their store: YOU CAN TELL. It was amazing, and the fresh ingredients generously proportioned made it a perfect lunch. If I lived in Boston I would be there weekly for lunch! This place is a must-eat!!!

This is a great quality option for lunch in the area. They create large bowls with a wide variety of quality ingredients that cater to all dietary needs. The dressings are tasty and healthy (can require without swetener). I never get bored, I get full but not heavy or tired in the afternoon.

Great food! Cut throat environment...rude display of customer service from cashiers. Asked for napkins and was yelled at to look behind me. Asked for butter and cashier rolled her eyes with a disgusted response of no.

Fasr, fresh, delicious! Be warned, a large sub can be 2 meals!

  • 5/5 Fred S. 4 years ago on Google
Fantastic sandwiches and great value for the area. 16" sub for 10$ and a 10" for 8

This spot is solid. No breaded chicken🙉🙉😥 they take cards. Cheap. Lunch deal gets you small sammy plus soda and chips for 9.5. The state street special sandwich is awesome. Prosciutto, basil tomatoes mozz etc. Reminds me of a fresh sandwich from italy.

Great Italian Italian. Roll was cut fresh and steaming, beautiful slices, lettuce and tomato, cherry pepper spread, laid on deliciousness! Got the full size and get to push some to later to eat watching playoffs!!!

Delicious pesto chicken kebab. Generous portion, too.

  • 5/5 Kristen B. 2 years ago on Google
Really good sub place. Recommend the italian or the chicken parm. It's definitely busy during lunch and you line up in different lines to order based on whether you're getting a hot sub or cold sub. Take a ticket and wait for your number to be called out.

I ran into Al’s for the first time in Harvard Square not knowing what a lunch phenom it would become. This location in Boston is the veritable lunch sandwich Mecca for your choice of hot or cold subs, chips, and drinks. Even a small sub could feed a grown hairy man for 2 days. Lots of meat and lots of bread. While the subs are not a knock out, they pretty satisfying and heaps better than Jimmy Johns. What is the best about Al’s is that the cold and hot sandwiches have different lines. So it’s super efficient for those who need to get in and out. Yeah, it’s the ultimate in lunch stops. They’re friendly too, despite the pace. If you’re in the mood for a quick, satisfying sub that will feed two grown hairy men, there’s Al’s. If your drunk need to forget that last 24 hours, including what you ate, there’s Jimmy Johns.

Expect the speed of Subway, the authenticity of street food, and deliciousness of a 5 star restaurant. These people are sandwich gods, they don’t have time for small talk or overly excessive politeness they’re too busy curating perfection between buns.

Best chicken salad in the city. Came here a few weeks ago after the lunch rush and the credit card machine broke for about 45mins. Didn’t have cash so had to run across to CVS in South Station. Otherwise they’re friendly and fast.

A+ for vibes (bright yellow paper wrapped hot subs in a cute shop), D- for dry chicken, but I’m sure if I got the steak sub, it would have SLAPPED Overall: B cuz no good vegan options with protein

  • 5/5 Ernesto R. 1 year ago on Google
The subs are amazing the staff moves the line really fast we need more places like Al's in Mass especially in Canton Stoughton Boston areas

I frequent pretty often for lunch and there’s only one issue that I have with them. I don’t want to feel like I’m doing something illegal or “weird” when I add pesto to my tuna. I get it it might be out of the ordinary but it taste good. Good sandwiches and salads. Hard to find another spot in the area that beats the prices, service and quality. I’ll let y’all be the judge; Small Tuna w/ lettuce tomato and onions (balsamic vinaigrette and Pesto)

  • 4/5 Brian S. 6 months ago on Google
Overall I loved their salads with additional chicken, very much worth the price. However, they mixed up my order (the paper bag said teriyaki but I wasn't given teriyaki chicken) and only provided one set of utensils for two people.

Decent food but rude staff. Homegirl with the triple chin taking orders has a really bad attitude. She rushed me and got mad when she messed up my order. Same horrible attitude every time I get takeout there. Very unprofessional.

Sub was dry and bad and cost $14 lmao. Cold sub guys were annoying. Way too much stake on the menu

  • 5/5 Shane N. 4 years ago on Google
This is a sub shop version of Soup Nazi, without getting yelled. Good food, good prices, super efficient. You get subs in a French loaf. Many flavors but one brand of chips. Make your order and move over. But the food is great and a medium sub, chips and a soda for under $10 is outstanding.

Al's has my favorite sub sandwiches. Many different types along with salads. Two lines: one for hot and one for cold. The bread is what makes it so great. Gets busy at lunch but it moves fast.

Didn’t know what a “spicy Italian” was. Used literally one slice of pastrami, bologna, and pepperoni. Like seriously. One slice of each. FAR from the best subs in Boston. And it’s called a cafe but they don’t sell coffee. Why? Never again.

This place is run so efficiently and quickly that you get your sub incredibly fast. The Italian sub I had was absolutely delicious and was very reasonably priced. It's busy but the line moves fast because of their great workflow.

(Translated by Google) The clerk is quite high pressure and has a strong Boston accent, so be sure to order it. The large size is $ 10 and the small size is $ 8. There are more than 10 types. You can choose hot or cold, cold is an ordering method of selecting ingredients from a subway-like showcase, hot is like a McDonough order at a cash register. The taste is normally delicious.

I got a salad from Al’s and all the salad had was chicken and lettuce and I paid 8 dollars just to eat that it’s such a disappointment and it not worth the money. And the customer service is so bad too like not asking me what I want in the salad

One of the best sub/sandwich places in the South Station/Downtown Crossing areas. The bread is really good (I believe it is homemade every day). The large is massive. I tend to eat large subs, but here, if I order a large, it's because I'm going to eat half now and save the other half for dinner/lunch the next day. I get the grilled chicken pesto every time and it never disappoints. Reasonably priced ($8/$10 for a small/large and only an extra $1.75 or so for chips+drink). Definitely a must try. A heads up, the hot menu line is on the left and the cold me u line is on the right (two separate lines).

Al's South Street has the best sandwiches in the country. Oddly, this location stands head and shoulders among their other shops - have gotten much better consistency in quality, so this is the only one I'll go to. However, it's so good, it's beyond compare. I see a lot of other reviews that don't appreciate the service or attitude. Listen - you're in Boston. Know what you want, order it, and don't expect a cupcake for it. Never change, Al's.
