They cancelled my reservation for new years three days before arrival. When I asked to reinstate my booking they asked me for 50 dollars a night instead of the 13 I was supposed to pay. I could not apend new years in Montañita because of this. Absolutely avoid.

Avoid this hostel if you don’t wanna ruin your holiday. They cancelled my advance booking only one day prior and when asked, they offered a room with many times higher price that the one I got in advance. Bad service!

Kamala is a lovely place with a lot of potential. I stayed here in Dec 2020/Jan 21 and the hostel has recently changed hands after a covid-19 related shut down. David, the new owner is working really hard to reopen and restore the place, and once tourism picks up again it will be an amazing hostel option for Montañita. The location is wonderful, a 20 minute walk from the noise and bustle of the town and right on the beach. There is a big pool, large social area with bar and great food. The staff really go out of their way to help you and make your stay great, and Alejandro (the chef) is a wizard who can make all of your food-dreams come true using local ingredients (very vegan/veggie friendly too!). I look forward to my next visit!

The views are incredible. Our cabin is cozy. The breeze fills my soul. I will remember the people I have met and the experiences forever.

Very good place! Rooms are simple, swimming pool is very good, many activities, good location especially for people who like walking along the beach! Staff is excellent! The last day we had a bus before the breakfast time, but guys woke up earlier to make a breakfast for us and to call us a taxi! Love this place!

We arrived at 8am on a night bus and were immediately able to check in. Very quiet when we were there in Sep but the staff/volunteers were good and great bar food. They also organised us a trip to Isla de La Plata (but had to transport ourselves to Puerto López first).

I liked this hostel so much! People who worked there were so friendly! Good location, clean beds and great pool!

Love this place! Beautiful location on quiet part of the beach, 20 minutes walking from the center on Montanita, or a 5 minute/$1.50-$2 cab ride. Has a bar and restaurant and is reasonably priced. Great place to party or chill, you make your own adventure :) The owners and volunteer staff make the place so fun! Thanks Kamala!!

Absolutely great place if you want to meet loads of different people, chill out in the day and party in the night. They do big ‘family’ suppers every night and to be honest you could easily stay here a week and not leave the hostel!

We had a lovely stay here in Kamala surf & backpacker hostel. We loved the kitchen and the chill vibe over there. It's a good place because you can hear the sea while you are asleep and you don't hear the party noise from montanita. We really enjoyed it there.

Amazing place I went for 5 day and stayed for 4 weeks (some people have stayed for 6 month an more). Made some super friends there .. We meet up all over South America regularly. Super social and you party all night (if you want). Amazing pool barbecue nights. Keep up the good work guys and girls

Kamala is a dream for those who are low-key, love to be around nature but also appreciate delicious food and a fun bar-on-the-beach atmosphere. Kamala is a very special place in that it was built, owned, and now ran by Ecuadorians. Other places in Montañita town can’t say the same. If you’re a person who loves nature, to occasionally have a drink(or more), and support a true local business, this is the place for you. The restaurant has the BEST food and can accommodate vegetarians and also non-drinkers. It has everything you need that you don’t even need to go to Montañita town, but of course that’s not recommended- Montañita is a blast! This hostel is far enough away to get actual private beach vibes but close enough to walk to town and enjoy endless sand and waves along the way. The icing on the cake is the plentiful taxi’s are only $1.50 to town from Kamala so don’t worry about always walking to and from. The bungalows are made out of local materials. Mosquito nets are provided and the beds are comfortable enough. Occasionally, the water turns off but will turn on later on the day. As a first worlder, I appreciated that aspect as a reminder to be humble and appreciate what we have access to, as opposed to being pretentious and assumptive in a third world country. Montañita town is wonderful- but it’s Kamala hostel that will have me keep coming back. Best place in Montañita, hands down.

Without a doubt, one of my highlights in Ecuador! The vibe is hard to compete with. Friendships grew immediately and no one wanted to leave. The owner is super down-to-earth, the bartender Emilio has a warm heart (+ talent for cocktails) the chef’s food is the best in Montañita, and the volunteers make everyone smile. A place for partying, but also jamming around the bonfire, playing pool/pingpong/beerbong and philosophizing. The only thing I regret is not staying longer

We loved it here! We initially stayed for 4 days but kept on extending an additional day till we stayed there a total of 7 days. We had our own beach which was emptier than montanita town. We socialized, played volleyball, had lots of delicious drinks, great food options, we basically didn't need to leave the hostel if we didn't want to. Very hospitable owners, super chill vibe and favorite beach spot.

Cool beachfront hostel, feels like a mini resort and something out of the Sixties. Anna, the owner, was very professional and helpful. Just watch out for the donkey - it kicked me when I tried to pet it.

A very good getaway. It's close enough to Montanita to walk along the beach to town. The food and community in the hostel is so good that most people go a few days without even leaving. There are hammocks to nap on, a fire pit to sit around and donkeys to giggle at. It's more of a party vibe but relaxation is available and if you're trying to venture off they'll help you get a whale watching tour in Puerto Lopez or something else fun.

The best experience! Great hostel: Nice breakfast, friendly staff (help you with anything), clean rooms, amazing pool…! Great location: Located at a quite beach and close to a small village with bakeries and restaurants. But only a 20 minute walk/ 5 minute in taxi away from the center of Montanita! We had a great time here. The owner Pablo is an amazing host. He is a really friendly guy who helps you in every way possible. He sat down with us and gave us an entire itinerary for the Galápagos Islands, our next stop. The chef and pablo’s right hand man is the sweetest man there is and makes the most delicious and fulfilling breakfast possible, and very cheap as well. They organise campfire nights, game nights, pizza nights and movie nights. All and all a very comfortable place where you really feel part of a community. As for the beds, they are very comfortable and provided with a place to store your baggage safely and mosquito nets. Babies don’t sleep as well as I slept here. The location is a bit outside of the town but they provide numbers you can call for taxis and they are very cheap, no more than $1,50. If you want to walk to montanita it’s a beautiful walk along the beach and the other way is manglaralta, which houses one of the best pizza places I’ve ever been to, at 10 minutes walking along the beach. Because the hostel is a little bit outside the town you have all the space you need to play volleyball or swim in the pool. On rainy days, chill by the bar, play some pool or tabletennis. Kamala hostel is a great place to get some rest, surf and have fun. Would highly recommend to anyone, from families to backpackers. Everyone is welcome at Kamala.

We were here around new years and it were the best days of my life!!!!! It's an amazing location around 20 min walking on the beach to Montanita city. Montanita was craaazy, lots of party. Pablo is a very kind man and also the other staff was very very friendly. If we wanted to do an activity, he would arrange it. Some friends of mine did paragliding. The swimming pool is amazing and you have a view on the sea. 10/10 would recommend, i will go back for sure.

Awesome hostel with the kindest people :). Love the location with the private beach and pool. Had the best New Years here. Will definitely be coming back!
