Wow what a bummer. I was born and raised in El Paso and had looked forward to experiencing Prickly Elder for a couple of years after having moved to Portland, Oregon 7 years ago. When I first arrived with my partner the atmosphere felt like a high school house party. Although I loved the theme and decor both customers and staff were very rude. Unfortunately, people in El Paso ARE NOT NICE. I thought I was coming into a revamped city with safe spaces for individuals but was proven wrong. Or maybe my expectations were too high? Either way, I have never felt to unwelcomed in a bar. I waited 20+ minutes to be served in plastic shot glasses. My partner felt obligated to wait in line for me after I stood at the bar for 15 minutes so that I got the opportunity to chat with my friends. Only one bartender wore I mask and I appreciate them for that. As we walked in everyone made sure to stare us down and whisper to each other. As I went into the bathroom more customers felt obligated to call me disgusting for using the “men’s” bathroom as if bathrooms weren’t unisex. Oh El Paso when will you BE NICE?! We left immediately and had a wonderful night at the EPIC bar and TOOL BOX which is just a short walk away!

Absolutely shameful behavior in there tonight. They closed out a one-armed dude's tab and told him he couldn't drink anymore, and when his friend asked them why they did such a thing, a larger lady said very loudly, "that he needs to get his GIMP friend out of here". Which is completely inappropriate. Of course the guy got upset and cursed this lady out, which then triggered an entire scene where all 5 bartenders were shouting at this guy and his friends. Fortunately the bouncers intervened, but I think they threw out the wrong people.

Cool little bar near downtown El Paso. They have different DJ's all the time from hip hop, house, reggae and more.

This place is fun. It's like not even El Paso any more when you step inside. Every one is having a good time.

Visited the Prickly Elder for the first time tonight. I looked at their website before going, they advertise "craft cocktails". Got there and asked the bartender if they had a drink menu, he said no, that they are working on one. I then asked him for a recommendation, for the best drink he makes, he suggested a Paloma. I said thats rather basic, he replied "they only do basic drinks". So i had the Paloma. It was made with thier cheap house tequila and a grapefruit soda from the gun. It tasted like an overly sugared fruit drink. Certainly not a craft cocktail. I couldn't even finish the drink, it was all sugary syrup. The only good thing was that horrible dink only cost me $6. So i guess you really do get what you pay for.

The shot glasses are so cute. This place looks like a grandmas house that somebody is throwing a party at. Super fun vibe. Also monarch is next door with the same hipster vibe. Always a plus to have a second backup bar next door

I walked into an empty bar, the bartender never made eye contact or greeted me in any way. I asked if he had a specific vodka I like and for the first time he spoke to say, “yea.” I asked for a Tito’s up with olives. “Yea, I don’t have anything to make a martini.” I asked if he had a drink list and he responded, “no.” I thanked him and walked out.

Hit this spot after a drink next door. It was fine... nothing to write home about. I didn't feel super welcome as the few people at the bar all seemed to know each other and the bartender wasn't overly friendly. The music was good and I digged the vibe (imagine if your cool grandma had a cute speakeasy by the beach.) I didn't get too creative, just grabbed a Dos Equis (as they didn't have much by way of beer options) and called it a night.

I'm not exactly sure how being friendly and courteous tipping well 50% and then when you use the restroom being told that you're a creepy person and the bartender lady hates you & getting thrown out. I'm a gay hisp man & getting treated the worst I've been in years. I'm sure they don't give a dam if I ever go back; but I'm not. & I'm surely going to tell anyone that's as single guy that you're not welcomed there

Awesome grooves to dance to. Great selection of beers to choose from. It has a great ambience, the nicest people, and the hottest bartender in town. What else could anyone ask for?

Went on a friday night, freaking loooved it ! The theme of this place makes you literally feel RIGHT AT HOME. Bartenders are pretty quick, extremely friendly. The people that get together here are all good vibes. Friday night was I guess cumbia night at oh my... my feet where hurting from dancing, best music eeever ! restrooms are a one single toilet restroom which was a little terrifying since I had to go and had to wait hahaha but not so bad this does happen in a lot of other bars.

Cool little bar in midtown El Paso. Walking distance to downtown and several other establishments. Friendly staff, decent selection of beers and mixed drinks.

Great place for tech house music with their DJs. Bartenders on the other hand are unwelcoming and always look annoyed to serve you.

The music and atmosphere were great. However, the service was either really good or absolute junk, depending on which bartender you got. One of those ladies had nothing but attitude; the other was super kind and willing to learn how to make new drinks. In regards to the actual drinks... their selection is absolute garbage, the bartenders are severely undertrained, and the drinks are grossly overpriced. I, unfortunately, would not recommend this place.

Had an altercation with the bartender over a 25$ bar tab. Shouldn’t be drinking on the job and you’d remember who ordered what. Also close your tabs every round people! Over all, I love the place. Always something going on like bingo or goth night.

This place is deffinately a change of pace and a trip to be inside no doubt but go in and ask for a tea kettle and order the one you like and you won't be disappointed. A little more pricey but deffinately worth it

The restroom the restroom the restroom. So disgusting and smells horrific. It's hard enough to have to pop a squat now you don't have hand soap. But just go to monarch next door to pee. The place is cool. Always check them out on ig to see who playing. Drinks are okay.

Use cash here or be careful using your credit card. My banking app alerted me to a bartender adding tip to my credit card slip after I left. It's really unfortunate because it's a cool place that carries cider on tap. And I agree the bathroom here is pretty nasty.

Prickly Elder is a quaint place. The best way I can describe it, is like having drinks in your grandmother's living room. There was a cool party going on when I went, and I met some new people! They seem to have some solid DJ's roll through from time to time. Good times were had this night! ?

  • 5/5 Emanuel F. 5 years ago on Google
The Prickly Elder is a small bar located on Mesa street between Downtown and UTEP. It was once a hookah bar that now has a 10 seater bar top, a couple chairs and tables and two couches with a bunch of old paintings and antiques that makes it look similar to your great grandparents living room. During the week you can find a live DJ spinning some EDM, drop in to play bingo and win a free shot or simply gather with the afterworlds crowd while you wait for the rush hour traffic to die down. The bartenders are awesome, drinks are great and the crowd always pleases.
