Drive was about 45 minutes from downtown El Paso to the ranger station. Beautiful drive about 15 minutes before entering the actual park. If you enjoy looking at rocks/boulders, this is the place to go. Everywhere you look, there's amazing views. If this is your first time, you'll need to watch a video about the history and preservation, this is valid for one year. It is 7$ per person. Rangers are all very friendly and knowledgeable. Went in the early morning, make sure to pack water, hikes are short, but there is not much shade. A great place to learn and explore, a section is only available for self guided tours, there are guided tours available that let you explore more of the park. Definitely recommend going to this hidden gem. Encountered a few folks that were bouldering. A very family friendly place. Really appreciate all the that has been done to make sure this area is preserved and well maintained for many, many more generations to enjoy. There were lots and lots of wildflowers throughout the trails. Also, beware of the rattle snakes, saw two in the early morning, be alert, give them their space.

This is an incredible park, as well as a breathtaking campground. Most of the spots back up to the mts.and have a view of the valley in the distance. Check in was easy. Anyone who wishes to hike in the park hast to take a 30 minute class. Phil explain to us how to stay on trails and to protect the pictographs that are throughout the park. nice bathhouse helpful staff. Canโ€™t wait to return.

Probably one of the best hikes Iโ€™ve been on. We did the self guided trail. I enjoyed the caves and how nice and cool it was when we were able to get in the shade. This hole is great for beginners. We did the chain trail which was challenging but not too crazy. The trail we did does not allow dogs; I believe the flatter trails allow dogs. This was a great family experience . I though it was cool that I saw some rock climbers; there are plenty of spots to do that! The man who walked us through the map was amazing! He gave us a very informative (but not overly informative) lecture which we were able to retain. The only reason I rated it a four star is because the female at the front desk wasnโ€™t as friendly and was obviously easily annoyed by people which is funny being that she is the first person of contact for all hikers/campers.

Great short hikes and lots of wildlife. Great birding spot and very beautiful rock formations. Staff was very helpful โ€”-only hope that as others continue to enjoy this place it can stay preserved as much as possible. Really disturbing to see how much graffiti is on some of the rocks.

I had the pleasure of discovering this beautiful gem through a local Facebook hiking group. After seeing the many beautiful pictures, I decided to take my family there for a day trip. What an amazing experience! I will definitely go back and I recommend anyone to go there, even if you have young children. Compliments to those involved in maintaining this State Park clean and safe.

This is a gem of a park. The campground is small (20 sites) but the sites (water and electrical hook-ups) are set up well and are spaced fairly far apart for privacy. There bathrooms are quite adequate, and there is a dump station available. The main draw here is hiking to view ancient rock art. There are self- or ranger led hikes available. To minimize the impact, the number of hikers allows each day is limited, so a call ahead concerning availability would be prudent. Support your National and State parks.

Hueco Tanks is peace itself. Itโ€™s a way to connect with nature away from it all, and it is full of history. They let you hike on your own in a specific area, or you can sign up for guided tours. Best option is to make reservations at their Austin #, otherwise, you have to wait at the gate for no-shows/ cancellations. Youโ€™ll see ancient drawings on the boulders, and lots of wildlife! Going hiking after it has rained (and itโ€™s safe) is really the best time to go. Youโ€™ll see the little huecos (hollows) filled up with water, and it makes the whole place smell great ๐Ÿ˜Œ

Terrible experience other than the many animals I saw and great rock formations. The maniac park ranger in an unmarked truck dangerously chased me down in a road rage fashion just to scold me for mistakenly missing the intro video, which was in a separate dilapidated building that I thought was a bathroom. I reported it to the sheriff's office.

This is a review for their RV/ camping part of the park. It's sort of odd reservations can only be made for a total of three nights. That's it. And the campground was virtually a ghost town. We stayed in site #1, which while ok in the cooler temps of April would not be as good as other campsites that have some shade in the warmer months. Exceedingly quiet and private, we used this as our base to hike around all that Hueco Tanks offers. Very nice. We're full time hiking RVr's, blog link in bio...

This is definitely a hidden gem. If you are ever in the area, make sure you plan to stop by. If you are able to call in advance, you can schedule a guided tour to see more of the park. Without the guided tour, we were still able to experience the rock paintings at Site 17. We all had a great time!

Great place to camp. The hiking trails are control due to sensitivity of the sites. But well worth the effort. Must watch a 20 min orientation video upon admittance to the park.

The Wild West is a place of many great secrets! My husband and I enjoy every turn and every surprise we find waiting. It is always a great day when you see and learn something new about our great country! Hueco Tanks has a nice cave within a close walk with decades of pictographs. They ensure you get the full experience and history lesson of course, totally worth seeing!

A great place to walk and Discover the natural elements. To look at all The paintings on the walls done by the native Indians. Every time you go you always find something new. I also recommend the guided tour by the Padilla family. To know the history of the ranch and the family that live there.

I really enjoyed exploring the park. The rocks are so interesting and unusual, and there seems to be endless places to go, all while feeling like you are in the middle of nowhere. The video at the beginning is something to account for in your time. It is mandatory viewing. I saw a snake within the first 5 minutes of hikingโ€ฆturned around and never did explore that path. I, as many, got consumed on the top, walking and crawling around, in awe of the place. As illustrated by my abundance of photos, I found this place beautiful in such a unique way.

Easily the best rock climbing area in all of Texas. High concentration of very classic boulder routes, a couple sport routes, and sparse trad routes. The boulders have high quality rock with great movement, as well as usually good landings and lots of beta (online videos). Classics range from v0 all the way up to v14+, so anyone can have a blast climbing with friends. Camping is also recommended, and the people are always friendly.

I love this park for so many reasons, but, the most important one is because my brother use to work here. I want to belive that his spirit is among those rocks watching over us, making sure we don't go on the wrong path. This park is perfect for bouldering, there's actually a huge community of enthusiasts who come to these rocks. Great educational park for the little ones. They have some easy trails, and some really hard trails that require good traction to come back down, so go prepared. Don't forget your water and snacks since there is not much out by Hueco. Here are some pictures from last November 2021. If you go, I hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Hueco Tanks from the air coming into El Paso, Southwest airlines, 2022

Beautiful, educational, well cared for. We had a blast climbing up the rocks to see some ancient drawings. Haven't been here since I was a kid. Glad my kids got to experience it. Got some great pictures too!

Worthy of the hype. Even in the heat of June at around 100 degrees, we still had a great time bouldering and exploring around the rocks. The historical significance of the site is noteworthy, and hunting around for cave drawings was fun. I highly recommend.

Amazing place to see a bit of Texas, United States and North American, Native American history. From the amazing rock caves and man-made and natural tanks to the pictographs that can be found all over the park, it's an amazing step back into history. If you're a rock climber or you "boulder" they allow that as well. You can see half of the park via self guided tour and the other half (including more pictographs and hueco tanks) if you take the guided tour. Guided tours are available Wednesday thru Sunday. Only 70 people after allowed on the mountains at any one time so you must check in and out with park personnel so others can enter during busy times. Camping is allowed for a fee. Cost to enter for the day is $7 each with a discount for over 65. Whether you have an hour to spend or all day, there are trails to keep you interested. There are both easy trails and slippery rock faces to hike or climb. Something for everyone. You won't be disappointed if you visit. ?

Amazing hikes with guided tours for the southern mountains. The north mountain can be explored with just an orientation video. Come explore this sacred site that has been preserved for future generations. Be nice, pack it in, pack it out.

If you are in to climbing this is a unique place to enjoy that. If you are just into hiking and seeing some really awesome (and rare in North America) cave paintings, this is the place for you. It also has some cool geological aspects to it so if you are a rock nerd you can get some enjoyment out of it as well. Make sure you call ahead to check the schedule because they only allow so many people in the park at a time and you have to watch the intro video. I would also recommend going out to the road at night for stargazing. The park isnโ€™t open at night but there is a pull off by a tree and a bench where you can enjoy the night sky.

We love this place for hiking and picnicking. There is ancient cave art and 100 year old graffiti etched on giant rocks. You can choose guided hikes or trek through on your own. Rock climbing is also very popular.

Excellent park. If you want to learn more about the history of the area and the ancient people take an interpretive tour. Itโ€™s five dollars a person and they limit the groups to 10 people. Book early as park sells out of rv spaces.

It looks beautiful. We didn't get to actually hike or climb in the park. A permit is required, you purchase that up on arrival. Make sure you get there early in the morning as it gets busy and they only allow so many people in the park at once.

This has to be one of the most interesting places I have gone to in a long time. If you are visiting El Paso and you want something fun and different to do. You've got to try this! Even this 55 year old was able to get around and see some wonderfully magical ecosystems in the caves and climb to the top to see these beautiful views.

This place is a gem. Has hiking trails and history learned from the early inhabitants here. We enjoyed the climb and the beautiful sunset. Staff are polite and helpful. If you like some moderate hiking then come to this place.

Very unique state park that has a past like no other with petroglyphs from indigenous tribes mixed with those from early settlers. Be prepared to follow the rules of the park to preserve it's history. Also be prepared for Boulder Climbing visitors, and one very grumpy older male staff member who will not enhance your visit. Thankfully he is outnumbered by a lot of great female staffers especially the park superintendent.

Although I have only visited the North Mountain, there is plenty to see. Don't take the word "plenty" lightly. My first visit was well over 20 years ago, so I didn't remember much. Since June of '23 I have been to the park 3 times, exploring a bit further each time, and finally reaching some amazing spots. If you want to get to the peak of the North Mountain, be prepared for a bit of technical bouldering, as there are lots and lots of crevices, hand/foot holds, and smooth rock.

I had such a wonderful time at Hueco Tanks! I gave myself 90 minutes to explore the self-guided area and I wish I had doubled or tripled the time. It's so fun to walk around, scramble up some rocks, crawl into caves and just relax and take in the views.

Great hiking experiences. Too bad so many people have felt the need to leave their own mark on the rocks. Some of the graffiti is from the 1800's, which is kind of cool. But, they have damaged ancient pictographs. 3 day limit means we will have to come back. Next visit we want to do the guided tour.

I was expecting to just run through here quickly on the way from Carlsbad to El Paso. It's actually not possible to do so. Because of the decades of vandalism that has gone on here, they make you pay $7 a head and then watch a 15-minute video and a short presentation before letting you wander around. Only about 75% of the park is accessible without a guide. All of the rock paintings we were able to access were defaced or completely faded. The reason that I would still recommend to go is the Chain Trail, where there are chains anchored into the rock that you can use to pull yourself up to the top of the rocks (moderate hike, not as scary as it sounds). Once up on top of the rocks you can walk around freely. The views are nice and there are cool spaces to wander around in.

Really interesting Texas State Park. There are nearly 3,-000 rock arts dating from about 2,000 years to the early 20th century. we stayed in the campground. There are 20 sites many with electric and water. Price for extrications site is $22 plus $7 per day per person. If you have the Texas State Park pass the per person fee is waived. They strictly limit the number of people and where they can go. If you are camping you will need to get the day pass to hike any of the trails. Many of the trails you will need a guide. Suggest to book a guided tour to get the full experience.

Hueco tanks never disappoints. Ancient mask paintings can be seen even on the public mountain and the views are gorgeous, especially during the rainy season. Come prepared with water, hiking boots, and long sleeves to keep the sun off. On the guided tours you can see even more awesome caves.
