Before I give my honest review I want to let you know this review will show biases. Our dining experience wasn't completely 5 stars. (more like 4.5) I'm giving them 5 stars because I appreciate their hard work and determination to keep this restaurant afloat. It wasn't easy finding a soul food spot that looked worthy enough to dine in. I needed a place to take my mother-in-law for her birthday. We're not from NJ, we were there visiting. Thanks to others' ratings, reviews and images, I knew this would be our best option. Upon walking in, my family and I were greeted by Cornbread's team. That felt welcoming. It was our first visit. A staff member explained that we would have to order our food first and then find seats in the dining area. (food will be brought to us) We ordered 4 meals plus drinks (non-alcoholic). This cost $89. My son, mother-in-law and I enjoyed our dishes. Unfortunately my wife's tastes buds weren't pleased. Kim ordered the Turkey Wings, Mac & Cheese, and Collard Greens (the latter of which they forgot to deliver to the table). One thing I respect about this restaurant is the fact that they're willing to correct their mistakes. They offered my wife another side dish - for free. My mother-in-law felt the sweet-tea wasn't as sweet. So in return the staff offered her the chance to taste their 'Southern Twang" drink. She enjoyed that one. As for my son and I, our taste buds enjoyed the seasoning on the fried chicken and whiting fish. I'd recommend Cornbread Maplewood to friends, family and those who believe in supporting black owned businesses.

I visited Cornbread as a dine in and to my surprise found it to be a hidden jewel. From the very beginning of my experience to the very end, I was delighted. The customer service was very friendly and professional. The cashier and servers were courteous, attentive, and professional. I chose to eat on the upper level where my food was bought to my table. Not only did the food presentation look good, but it smelled and tasted amazing. It was such a delight to have the owner and legendary cook come out to greet us with a warm welcome and smile. We enjoyed the food, conversation, and ambiance in totality. Great place to get authentic Southern food in a great environment. It felt like home. Thank you Zadie 🙂

My first time here in 4 years, and it was good! There was much appreciation for seeing us, as we made it right at the time dine in dining ended for the night. I got the 2 piece whiting with Mac and cheese and collard greens. Everything was good, but of course, the cornbread was amazing. I definitely enjoyed the food, and I will be back for a visit much sooner than 4 years later.

Amazing hospitality and great food. Fried chicken is juicy and perfectly fried and crispy. Mac and cheese was also delicious and so was the collard greens and yams! The cornbread is some of the best cornbread I've ever had. Overall give this place a 20 out of 10 !!

Welcome To Cornbread! This is how we were greeted as customers. I definitely enjoyed the Turkey Wings and sides in the pictures below. As the food looked amazing to me so was the taste. The thing for me is that it was the right and just enough seasoning for me. Customer service matches the great tasting food that is being served. The cleanliness of the place was a n point. I definitely will be back.

I’m writing this review as I am still sitting here eating in this amazing establishment. I couldn’t leave the restaurant until I first acknowledge the outstanding food and service provided. The taste of the food was on point, I ordered chicken and waffles plus a veggie plate. The drinks are top notch, I had the lemonade and the southern twang. Oh and by the way, this was my second day eating here in a row. I’m from the south, Atlanta, and we know how soul food should hit. And this place hit it on the head. Shout out to Tiffany for taking care of me two days in a row. She definitely holds it down for the crew. I appreciate you! I wish the Cornbread family much continued success!! See you again soon.

We came here on a whim and loved the food! Ordering on the kiosk was so easy. The portions were generous and the food was so so tasty. The staff here treats you like family, and Tiffany took great care of us. Thank you, Cornbread. We’ll be back!

Nice view from upstairs. My chicken and waffles plate was really good! My husband's Mac n cheese was surprisingly lacking in flavor. The cornbread was just ok. We liked the rice and His fried chicken was also delicious! The sweet tea was..not sweet tea. The service could definitely be better. The cashier made us feel like we did something wrong. The server brought our food and said nothing. Not even a "you're welcome" for our "thank you". Not sure if we would return for another try but if we ever decide, we would get our fried chicken to-go. Overall, the restaurant was just ok

Incredible food and even better service. Everyone was extremely kind, the manager came upstairs to check in on everyone and our food was brought to the table quickly. I got the 3 piece fried chicken with Mac and cheese, potato salad and a 1/2 and 1/2 (iced tea and lemonade). The chicken was hot and crispy, mac and cheese was very cheesy and flavorful and the potato salad was perfectly balanced. My wife got a catfish po boy that she loved and our friend got the chicken and waffles. He said the waffle was one of the best he’s ever had. 10/10. Awesome place!

I was invited to my cousins bridal shower in June and the food was outstanding! It was held in the upstairs area with an outside patio, spectacular! The food was so good that we came back again. I live in Westchester by the way. The food and the service, AMAZING! Run don’t walk. I will be back

The food is out of this world fresh and we had the pleasure of meeting Joe the manager who is SO welcoming and friendly and really made us feel like part of the family! They even made my dog feel at home ❤️🥺 definitely will be returning !!!

My husband ordered chicken, blackeye peas and collards. I ordered catfish with Mac n cheese and potato salad. The presentation was excellent. Everything looked very appetizing however; if you know authentic southern soul food and have a craving for it, do not even do it to yourself. Go somewhere else or order the fish and cornbread and you won't be disappointed. The flavor and texture of the sides are off in my opinion. It's not terrible, it just doesn't hit home when you want authentic southern soul food. The servers are very hospitable, and attentive. The dining area was tidy. I won't be returning only because their side dishes are not seasoned to my liking and sides are what I enjoy the most.

Let me start this off by saying the food was AMAZING. The staff was so lovely and the manager was just great. I didn’t get her name but she took the time to get to know each customer. I give this place a 10/10 - the fried chicken was sooooo moist and the yams were delicious. I would definitely come back again!!!

Theeeee absolute best soul food and top notch service. Had fried chicken, yams and cornbread, the food was fresh and steaming when it was brought to the table. When you enter the restaurant they greet you like you are old friends, very welcoming atmosphere and the bonus is the restaurant is very clean. Will definitely be coming back and will bring some friends. Michelle and Trudy are the ones that were here when i visited, they are the best and deserve a raise.

Everyone's taste buds is different and this isn't the taste of soulfood I'm use to. The Mac and cheese was dry and lacked seasoning. The collard greens were hot in taste, I did not like them. I should of known when I saw carrots in the collards they would not taste right. The chicken looked like the chicken you buy from grocery store in cold case. The chicken tasted ok as well as the potato salad but I will not be returning. Everyone can't put the soul in soulfood and this is what happened here.

I love cornbread Maplewood. We visited the Newark location and it was great. We thought lightening wouldn’t strike twice but the staff were super sweet and helpful. Not just to us but to everyone who came in. They treated us like regulars. From the cashier to manager and kitchen staff. They made helpful recommendations because you know I couldn’t make up my mind. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his fried chicken, yams and Mac and cheese. I had two pieces fried whiting collard greens and black eyed peas as flavorful as my grandma’s. We tasted each other’s sides and loved it all. My new go to soul food spot.

Such a cute little dining place! This has been on my radar for agessss and I finally had the chance to stop by! I was a little skeptic about the portions and pricing at first, but when i opened my little to-go box, it was a pleasant surprise! I ordered their 2pc chicken special, thinking it would be some small pieces, but they gave me such a huge piece of chicken! the special also came with a side of cornbread (which is so perfectly sweet and corny and just the right density) and a choice side. i had the baked mac, which was different than any mac and cheese i've had before. it was pretty cheesy and soft, and had a bit of a tang or zest to it! everything tasted fresh and handmade <3 as for the dining experience, they have a small outdoor seating area on their porch with string lights across the ceiling. overall, a very clean and organized place! for service, i had a minor issue with my order but they were patient and understanding. they were actually very friendly! as soon as i walked in, i was welcomed with a bright smile, which was very kind. tl;dr : great local lunch/dinner spot! good pricing for great portions and a nice atmosphere for dining in.

Had dinner here tonight and the food is fantastic. I’m from the south, so I was super skeptical. Food tasted like somebody’s auntie was back there. Lol. Pros: —plenty of parking in the well lit back lot or on the street. —plenty of seating downstairs and upstairs, both inside and outside. —nicely decorated bathroom —you can order online, bc I saw the staff packing up to go and pick up orders. —all of the sides were really good. The dressing was my least fave though. —the homemade tartar sauce is THE BOMB!!! Make sure you ask for it. DO NOT eat the stuff out of the packets. —if you dine in, they will bring your food to you. Even though there is a steam table, you don’t walk down the line to get the food. —the stars of the show are the cornbread, of course, the fried chicken, and the fried catfish. If your meal isn’t served with cornbread, you’re doing yourself a disservice by not ordering a piece on the side. Cons: —the food is on a steam table, so I was looking forward to actually seeing the food when they served it. Overall: The food is really good, and I would definitely return.

1st time here all the way from Bethlehem PA. I will be back! The service by RJ was excellent and everything on my plate was delicious. I had turkey wings, Mac & cheese, candied yams, cabbage and rice and gravy. (Don’t judge me) lol I didn’t eat it all. I will have some for lunch tomorrow. Great establishment.

Came here for lunch with my brother and the service was poor. We had to constantly walk up and down the stairs for drinks, sides, boxes ( mind you we were dining in and the restaurant was empty). The cups for beverages were so small! We had to get about 10 refills ( exaggerating a bit ). I ordered turkey wings, they weren’t bad. The baked chicken was a bit dry. I paid for an extra side and they forgot to bring my collard greens.

I have been past this business in the past but never got the chance to give it a try. I was happy to finally give it a try. When I arrived I parked in their private lot. I walked in and ordered with a nice lady. There was an upstairs and downstairs so the place is pretty big. I ordered the turkey wings, mac and cheese, cabbage and an uptown. I also got the peach cobbler for dessert. Everything looked good when I dug in. The mac was good, the cabbage wasn't bad, and the turkey was flavorful. The only issue was that the turkey was a bit fatty. The peach cobbler wasn't bad either. All in all I had a good experience.

First time here at the Maplewood Restaurant. Very friendly and fast service! The Collard Greens and the Cabbage are delicious! Their Cornbread has a consistency like cake, thick and sweet tasting. The Chicken and Mac and Cheese was nothing spectacular but still tasted good. Their Uptowns are good also. Not overpowering of sugar but just right! I do recommend to check them out. It is a must try!

I just visited this place for the first time and I’ll definitely be back. I didn’t care for their orange specialty drink, but the food was excellent! Next time, I want to eat upstairs. There are also small outdoor sections to eat at when the weather is nicer. I had fried chicken wings and the batter was well seasoned and crispy! The cornbread was sweet and fluffy. I loved the cabbage another well seasoned item. I really enjoyed my food.

Fried chicken was average, the baked chicken was good. The mac and cheese lacked some seasoning, the yams were good. The place itself it very nice and has plenty of parking in the back. Overall it was okay.
