We are new to the area and while out we stumbled upon Plum Garden. After a quick google search for the reviews, we decided to stop in and give them a try for a quick afternoon snack. First, the lady at the front desk was very pleasant while the younger women who sat us seemed to hate her job. When she sat us, I smiled and said "thank you" and in return she gave me a dirty look didn't say anything turned and walked away. After sitting and taking in the room, the decor and atmosphere reminds me of The House on the Rock attraction in Wisconsin. Very gimmicky, dark, red and black with Christmas decorations still up. Btw, it's June and these decorations have been up for YEARS with the amount of cobwebs that are attached to them. Secondly, we ordered the pot stickers - fried, and when them came out they were on a large cabbage leaf that had the pepper spots. Not the most appealing when you are serving food. I had to check to see if they were bugs or mouse droppings. Maybe skip the "decoration" next time. If that wasn't enough, the pot stickers were made of egg roll wrappers rather than dumpling wrappers, and they were literally fried in oil...not pan fried. Third, the main dish we ordered was the honey crisp chicken with pan fried noodles. The chicken was cold, the sauce was so disgustingly thick and sweet (not honey sweet), and the batter was reminiscent of funnel cake. The pan fried noodles were like ramen noodles that needed a few more minutes in the pot. After years of living blocks from Chinatown in Chicago, we know what real Chinese food is suppose to taste like. THIS is not it!! I'm not sure what the 5 star reviews are, but we will not be back to try it out.

We went here because of the good reviews. I was expecting that the food will be very delicious but it was just ok. Nothing special. We don’t think we will be back.

Hong Kong chicken is amazingly delicious. The plum garden egg roll is massive and so crispy. Try the Sapporo beer with your meal, it pairs well.

Delicious!! Best Chinese place we have found so far! The shrimp roll appetizer was so unique and delicious. They give you portion options for the dishes as well- small or large. We got chicken fried rice and orange chicken- which was the small portion in picture. Drinks were delicious and not mixer-heavy! Staff was extremely friendly and attentive. It also was very clean! Definitely going back.

This restaurant was great today. Our server was very personable, the food was amazing as always, and our table was ready as soon as we walked in. I live 2 hours away & have definitely made the trip in the past just for the food! Highly recommend!

The best eggrolls I've ever had!! All the food was delicious and so flavorful. Staff was very friendly as well. Our wait time for the bill was a little long but our waitress was apologetic about it. We will definitely be back!

Called and reserved a table it was about 30 minutes. Arrived and was seated pretty quickly. It was bussssy around 7pm and I did bump into a waiter that was rushed. I've been in a similar job so I understand. Accidents happen. Food was amazing. The Plum wine I'm coming back for that was so delicious. And them egg rolls were about as awesome as they revved them up to be. Seriously try the Plum Wine.

I would give zero stars if I could. We ordered food from here and found a this maggot. I’m in shock because I’ve had food from here before. But this is absolutely disgusting. Yuck. It was the beef and broccoli..I have no words

We ate in for my dad's birthday and it was phenomenal. Food was excellent, our waiter couldn't have been nicer, we felt like we got a good value for our food. Absolutely great! The following weekend we wanted Chinese again so we ordered takeout. Absolutely AWFUL. We were charged extra for everything, paid an arm and a leg for very little, the food tasted bland. Everything tasted the same. Terrible. I don't know which experience was the fluke, but it was bad enough that what we were excited to have become our new staple, has now become a never again.

Went there for my friends birthday for lunch. There were 8 of us, and we were given a nice table in their main area. We had great service. The food was amazing and there was lots of it for the price. The egg rolls were fantastic and the biggest I have ever had. So much that I took home leftovers. Great place.

Everyone was amazing, considering they were about to close!! Very pretty decor and delicious food and sake. Will definitely be coming back and bringing them more business. THANK YOU PLUM GARDEN STAFF

I was very disappointed in my delivery yesterday. I ordered 2 meals and an egg roll for $55.00 (including tip/delivery). The portions were so small, it reminded me of Panda Express. I also ordered sweet and sour chicken with the sauce on the side, and they put it on the chicken. That will be the last time I order from PG.

Not good. I don’t live around here anymore and was so excited to eat at Plum garden but I was very disappointed. My chicken was not fully cooked and my friend said that’s she’s had the same experience a few times recently. I ate half of it before realizing hopefully I don’t get sick.

Hong Kong Chicken | 3 Large Chicken Breasts. Serves 3-4 people. Their most famous dish with over 1 million orders sold. Extra tender breasts of white meat chicken hand-dipped in their homemade batter, topped with their Hong Kong sauce & garnished with green onions. Served crispy over a bed of bok choy, mushrooms, & water chestnuts. It all started with a woman & her dream. Mother, Grandmother & PG Founder Connie Moy. This family restaurant began in the humble beginnings of a small village in China. Their Founder, Connie Moy, as a young girl, learned her family's recipes from her mother & each day as a child, completed her responsibilities of daily food gathering & meal preparation. It was always Connie’s dream to one day find a place to make her mark on the world & open her own restaurant. Upon coming to America, Connie’s dream began to take shape as she slowly worked her way up in various relative’s restaurants & began waiting for her opportunity to one day strike out on her own. That day finally came in 1965 on a fateful trip to the great city of McHenry. On a rare day off of work, Connie had promised her children a day of exploring & fun. So with her children gripping her tightly, they boarded a train & set out for adventure. When asked years later about why she chose McHenry to visit that day, Connie simply & surely replied “finger on map, hope in heart” That day, Connie would come across the building that would become Plum Garden Restaurant. Connie strived & sacrificed her whole life to put down roots in a community she simply wanted to serve. Their Grandmother’s incredible legacy lives on in her children & grandchildren. Her son Perry, took over the family business in 1972 & created their most famous dish, Hong Kong Chicken. From that moment on, Perry began to transform Plum Garden from a small take out only place to a Fine Dining Full Service Restaurant that would begin to be recognized as a leader in Chinese cuisine & more importantly, an active member of the McHenry County community. At the end of 2013, under the direction of Perry’s oldest son Jason (Connie’s Grandson), Plum Garden expanded their operations by doubling in size to create the current layout today. Jason officially took over the business in 2018 & has focused on growing Plum Garden’s digital presence by ushering in online ordering, delivery & new menu additions such as their homemade Crab Rangoon recipe, their Bacon Mac N’ Cheese Egg Roll, their Mandarin Pork Egg Roll & many others. They are proud to be the oldest single family owned restaurant in McHenry County spanning three generations of the Moy Family. They have served our community since 1965 & they still honor their grandmother’s legacy with commitment to only the freshest & finest ingredients.

For 15 years Plum Garden has been our favorite Chinese restaurant. We drive a lot further to get there these days but it's always worth it. The food is fresh and delicious, beautifully prepared and so reasonably priced for the quality. The egg rolls are the best we've ever had with no close second. They've continued to make improvements to the interior, making it an elegant and inviting atmosphere. We've had lots of servers over the years and even talked to the owner a few times and have always had a great experience. If you're able, you need to give it a try. It's sure to become one of your favorites too! And try the Hong Kong chicken. It's their most popular dish for a reason.

We arrived without reservations on a Saturday night, First thing they asked us was if we had reservations and based on how many people were inside I recommend it. I tried the cocktail drink flight. They were all very good. I can't remember the name of the dish but it came with 2 different style meats beef and chicken, it was really salt though.

How to express the love I have for this restaurant? Visiting has been a family tradition tied to my birthday since 1994. I have so many great memories at Plum Garden. The food is simply fantastic. Vibrant flavors, large portions. The menu is large and engaging. I'm happy to say that the dining room expansion that happened a few years ago was a success; the restaurant still feels like Plum Garden.

I was really looking forward to some great Chinese food, I didn't get it. The flavors were nearly non-existent, in fact, I tasted more aluminum (packaging the food was in) than I did beef or sauce. The pot stickers were the tiniest version I've ever had from a restaurant. Fried rice was nothing special, it tasted almost exactly like the white rice. BBQ Pork tasted more like Texas BBQ, it didn't have any Asian BBQ flare at all. I don't know if they simply are too rushed these days to make their dishes properly, or what the problem is. Next time I am in the mood for Chinese, I'll go to a different place.

1st time here, did not disappoint. Called ahead of time to make a reservation, arrived and was seated n greeted right away, waiter was very kind & pleasant. Very knowledgeable and helpful with the menu items. Overall, great 1st time experience....place was nicely decorated and very clean. You definitely get what you pay for, just about everyone that was there...left with leftovers...including myself!!!! Hope to come back soon!!

Very over priced for such a small portion. There were only 4 pieces of chicken in the sweet & sour chicken while I paid $14. The egg drop soup was also very salty with no flavor, and missing the "egg" in egg drop soup. Not impressed.

Friends of ours invited us to try this place. We're sure glad they did. Very spacious and welcoming environment. Waiter was knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and funny. The crab rangoon was probably the best I've had. The house fried rice was out of this world and our entree (pepper steak) was 👌🏼 Already looking forward to my next trip up there to try something new.

Love eating here! Only thing was didn't matter if you made a reservation(we used open table). When you show up you then wait with whoever else is there. BUT going on Valentine's day during the rush everyone was so friendly and delicious food of course!

I have visited a number of times over the years and have never been disappointed. I know they've had an expanded dining area for a very long time but I did like the intimacy of the original space. That said, it is still very nice. Very nice atmosphere! To some the menu may seem limited but everything they do (in my experience experience) they do very well. I think it is well above average and they do have the best egg rolls I've ever had. I recommend them to personal friends and acquaintances all of the time. Give them a try you may be very pleasantly surprised.

Superb! Atmosphere: We’ve had their take-out before & it was great, as the food today was. What pleasantly shocked us was the ambience, historic Chinese (black, red, white, some gold) but behold the brightly colored neon dragon (insert dragon sound)! Great mixture of tradition flare with modern vibe - well done, Plum Garden!! Service: Another place in town of a similar ethnic cuisine had no room for us at their ‘inn’. I stepped outside of that other place and called Plum Garden. Plum Garden told us to come on over. We did, best choice!! Waiter was excellent, he took our order all from memory & was highly personable & professional. The bus staff (water filler & plate removal) was far above average. All staff were courteous & upbeat, they wanted to be there & wanted to provide superior service; they did!! :) Food: Great flavor. Good cocktail, plenty of ‘punch’! Portions were very generous. We boxed up stuff; rarely do I ever not finish a serving when eating out. Thank you Plum Garden!!

Take out order was very poor the signature dish Hong Kong now is Pre made chicken tenders and no veggies, egg roles are also Pre made just sad! Don't waste the time or money. I have been a customer for years it's downhill

Manager seemed a little giddy, our server was great at first but she seemed overwhelmed like they didn’t have enough staff which isn’t her fault. We were going to eat dinner but ended up just doing egg rolls and drinks since we were on a time crunch. Egg rolls were great though, looking to come back to eat dinner. Prices are also steep for chinese food.

Wow! My family has ordered from here since I was little and I haven't been to the restaurant physically since then. So I figured I'd go there again. The service was excellent. "Paul" was our waiter and was super friendly and responsive. The food was large portions and very tasty. It really makes me reconsider what other other Chinese restaurants consider quality after having Plum Garden's food. I had the Bacon Mac & Cheese egg roll (way better than one would expect), their famous Plum Gardrn egg roll, and their Orange Chicken. They deserve every compliment and the pricing (although a little higher than competitors), is very justified. Quality chicken, the egg rolls are moist and kept at a perfect temperature when brought out, and their in-house sauces shed a new light on what to expect for Chinese flavor. Highly recommend this location, and I'm not easy to impress when it comes to the food industry.

First time ordering tonight and quite dissatisfied. The large fried rice is in a small container. 5 pot stickers for $9 is extremely expensive. Figured you would get 2 spring rolls for $3 but no only one so $9 for 3 spring rolls that were burnt and not edible. The menu does not state how many you get with an order. Value is very poor here. The other place just down the street has better food and half the price.

We ordered a large variety of items from the menu to try. We placed our order from their website. We were extremely pleased with the online ordering process, quick order preparation time, friendly staff at pickup time, and we were especially pleased with the quality of the food. The food portions are extremely generous and everything is so fresh and tasty. The spring roll and egg roll were outstanding! The egg foo young is huge and delicious. The portion of meat added into every dish was very generous. Make sure to try the wonton soup. We have found a new favorite place for Chinese cuisine. *Covid-19 Note: The staff were all wearing their masks, the pickup area had floor markings for waiting in a properly distanced way, a hand sanitizer stand was available, and signage was present inside and out, stating their safety guidelines.

👍 I was a little leery of this place after it moved locations. The venue is as huge as some of the sandwiches, so there's plenty of room for everyone.
