The most spectacular day out in history. Visit before a visit to Pompeii to get a sense of a more compact life. The site is amazing, so much to see, so many highlights and so much complete. We turned up and got tickets on the door, I would advice going early for this. The surrounding area is also amazing to give you a sense of everyday italian life. The bakery up the road is unreal.

Fantastic experience. Lots to walk around and consume all the history in this place. Mosaics out of this world and still in tack in lots of houses. A real town with lovely houses gardens along the roman streets. A must do visit. Train from Napoli , 9 stops for just over 2€ return pp. A great day out

Incredible ruins from the mount Vesuvius eruption of 79AD. Not as well know as Pompeii, but absolutely worth a visit. The part of the city you can visit is much smaller than Pompeii, but the buildings are more intact, and the remaining mosaic tile, painted artwork, and structures are amazing. Absolutely glad we added this to our visit around Naples and would recommend it to anyone. We also had a guided tour from an archeologist who made the trip even more educational, with a twist of humor. (Raphael and Giovanni from Askos tours)

Visited on the first Sunday of the month so entry was free and there was no wait at all to get in. The park was virtually empty so it was easy to get really good photos. Herculaneum is much better preserved than Pompeii, and you can enter more houses. It was an amazing experience and a must do for anyone in the area

This is of course my opinion but I think the Herculaneum ruins are 1000 Times better than that of the Pompei ruins because well, first, I had a tour guide that explained everything extremely well, whilst Pompei I was walking without purpose. However, I find Herculaneum much more manageable in that you can see most of it in a few hours, and get some phenomenal pictures. There’s also not as many people struggling to see everything so you actually have some solitude and personal space when you’re here. The price also wasn’t too bad, around 13 Euro I believe. I definitely recommend checking it out and you can also pick up a taxi outside if you wanna go to mount Vesuvius after.

I'd heard it was better than Pompeii because the ruins were more complete. Kind of a difficult place to access on narrow streets. My travel partner's iPhone GPS took us to the back side of the property. We had to drive around to the front side through street flea markets in what appeared to be a very rough section of town. Finally made it. A very nice gentleman assisted me with parking. We were about to park in an illegal spot and get a ticket. Some of the more attractive exhibits were closed due to renovation. Guide books in English were out of stock so I had to take one in Italian. My internet didn't work very well so it was difficult to use online access to descriptive information. The place gives great insight into first century A.D. Roman life. I especially liked seeing homes with the atria, mosaics and frescoes. To fully appreciate and explore it I would recommend allowing at least 3 to 4 hours or more. We didn't have that much time.

Must go if you're visiting the area! Smaller, but better preserved city as opposed to Pompei. Several buildings still have paintings and decor that you can walk through and see.

This place was absolutely fascinating. We went here before we went to Pompeii and I’m really glad that we did. This was easily done in about 2 to 3 hours and we saw all sorts of really amazing things. I kind of wish we had gotten a tour guide, but it was really nice exploring it on our own. Don’t forget to see the boat and the artifacts before you leave. They are off to the side over by the little café. There are also bathrooms behind the café. look out for all the cats! They are everywhere! We went at the end of January, and there was hardly anyone there.

We visited Herculaneum the day after we had a fantastic guided tour of Pompeii. We had learned so much during that tour that we felt it was unnecessary to do another guided tour. Therefore , we did Herculaneum in our own pace and we had an amazing day in this once so fabulous holiday resort by the sea. The buildings are better preserved than in Pompeii and you find lots of places with 2000 year old wooden planks. We spent about 3 hours wandering around the ancient city. It is much smaller than Pompeii, but there is so much amazing to see.

This place is fantastic. In my view much better than Pompeii: a fantastic, detailed little pamphlet (in various languages including English) is given with the entrance, so no need for a guide. Plus great views from on high before you descent into the site. The site is FAR less crowded than Pompeii, and much smaller. Regardless was there for about 2.5 hours. The ruins are in much better condition and there are some beautiful mosaics remaining. Lovely, well-fed cats walk around as well. Well-worth the entrance cost of about 13 euros. Easy and cheap train ride from Naples centre as well.

As the other reviews have noted, this site is the companion to Pompeii. In my opinion, it's not better nor worse than Pompeii, but different and complementary. Because a city was built around and on top of the original city, the site is smaller, in a pit, surrounded by the current city of Herculaneum. But, the preservation of organic material, and the skeletons visible in what were the docks are striking. Practical things to note: 1. The site is about 30 minutes outside Naples. 2. Tickets can be purchased on site. 3. Easy to navigate the site, but suggest an audio tour. Otherwise, you won't really know what you're looking at. 4. There are toilets and vending machines in the park. Bring change for the vending machines. 5. There is a little set of vendor booths outside the park with snacks and some souvenirs. These take cash and cards (though I think they prefer cash). 6. It's an archeological site: There are almost no even surfaces. Cobblestones, stepping up and down, etc.

Preservation is unlike anything in the Mediterranean region outside of Egypt. But a heroic amount of work has gone into it's excavation. (Most of the city remains buried under 20 m of volcanic cement.) You won't see the eerie plaster of Paris body casts here -- Herculaneum's inhabitants were poisoned by gas and burnt before being entombed. But the oxygen was exhausted quickly and carbonized wood is still plentiful as parts of door frames, fragments of architecture, and even a corner of a bed. There are some remarkable mosaics and frescoes in situ; but sculptures were removed to the museum, and not all replaced by copies. Some of the material protection of the site is getting shabby and needs replacing -- so be happy to pay your entrance fees and hope it goes to the right place. Don't lean on walls or touch paintings, even though the tour guides do. You can buy tickets on site or online. Guides (on site) cost €100 for 1h20m, and €150 for 2h tours. Wait to gather people at the ticketing office to lower per person cost. Relatively few tourists here and the site easily absorbs the numbers. Bring water (available in machine at office and in nearby cafe) as none on the archaeological site itself.

We spent a delightful 4 hours at this ancient site. It is much smaller than Pompeii and the buildings and contents much better preserved. The excavation must have been huge, considering that the town was buried under 30m of ash. My advice is as follows: Go early and take your time working your way around Look at the little things too - the intricate workmanship, etc Take water - unlike Pompeii, there is no water in the ruins Don't start at the tunnel and you'll avoid the crowds. Begin your tour on the northern side and you'll benefit Download their PDF of the site - it has good information Take a free map when you arrive - it will help. Finally, as you enjoy the experience, take a moment to reflect on the brevity of life and the length of eternity.

After some advice before we arrived in Naples we decided to just see Herculaneum and skipped Pompeii completely! We weren't disappointed. This is a great ancient site to visit and well worth spending the day. Some of the details that are preserved from 79AD are quite amazing! We had two small children with us and managed to leave most of our snacks in the welcome centre with our bag so remember to take everything you will need with you down to the site! There is a carpark just outside that doesn't need pre-booking and you can buy your tickets for Herculaneum at the gate so don't get fleeced into buying a guided tour or parking online before you go.

I visited the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum and it was really cool. The ancient ruins were fascinating to explore and I learned a lot about the history of the place. The preserved buildings and artifacts were impressive, and it was interesting to see how people lived back then. The park was well-maintained. Overall, it was a great experience and I would definitely recommend checking it out if you're into history and ancient civilizations.

This archaeological site is well worth a visit, it's also very moving. When you first enter the main site you see the boat sheds that would have been at the original sea shore. These boat sheds contain some of the skeletons of the over 300 people that died there waiting for boats that never came. The rest of the site is filled with the remains of large villas and smaller shops as well as a spectacular frontage of a massive building that is still buried under the modern town. This is situated at the very top of the site. Unfortunately the theatre is not in the main site and again still buried under the modern town elsewhere and only accessible on a guided tour on a Sunday. Parts of the the theatre have been dug out underground and many of the statues that were in the theatre are now in the archeology museum in Naples. Some of the best preserved and amazing bits are the wooden screen in one of the houses and a wooden bed in another. It's amazing that these survived only due to the fact that they were instantly carbonised by the 450 degree C pyroclastic flows that came down the site of Mt Vesuvius and buried the city. I also found the 'Inn House' particularly interesting as it was a kind of Spa treatment place in Roman times with a huge pool that now has fruit trees growing in it.

(Translated by Google) Although less famous than the excavations of Pompeii, the excavations of Herculaneum represent its natural completion. The excavations of the two ancient settlements, while showing Roman cities of the same period, present substantial differences that require the attentive tourist to visit both. Pompeii was almost completely unearthed and for this reason it offers an overview of how an ancient Roman city could have been, under the reign of Tiberius. The ancient Herculaneum, on the other hand, has not been completely unearthed because the new city stands on the same territory, in fact many public buildings are missing, but the details are much better preserved. Opening time: 08:30 - 19.30 (last admission at 18:00) - from 1 April to 31 October 08:30 - 17.00 (last admission at 15:30) - from 1 November to 31 March 1 January and 25 December closed Ticket price: Full € 11.00 Reduced € 5.50 Free for under 18s and the first Sunday of each month. Incredibly interesting, we spent a couple of hours here. It’s not terribly overrun, you can really take your time and discover everything in peace and quiet. There’s also some great mobile guides in multiple languages you can download via QR code, after purchasing your ticket. They also offer guided tours.

If your undecided about whether to visit, this is certainly worth it, better in many ways to the site at Pompeii, some of the house/shops have pictorial dipictions on the walls to further show you what the premises were used for. The bath house is magnificent. The whole site is superbly preserved, the boat which first help discover Herculaneum is masterfully restored, the whole site is walkable in a good couple of hours & unlike Pompeii there are many areas of shade for those scorching days of summer through to late October which still garners a warm day. A beautiful visual treat

Truly a beautiful historic sure and must-see! We did visit Pompeyi before , but you will never have the same feeling anywhere else as in Herculaneum , it feels like you really entered the antique city, a true Roman village. Architecture is much more preserved than in other places and mosaics and frescos are incredible. Unfortunately, there is some damage to it affected by tourists and recent visitors, and it is heartbreaking to see vulgar graffiti carved onto paintings that pass over 2000 years ... The good side : they have a cat!

This is a very fabulous place that is a must on your list. You can feel that you travel back in the history. This archaeological site is like a time travel, so many parts are conservatted and rediscovered. T Nicely renovated, great exhibitions, and very friendly staff. Please pay attention that as of nowadays rule you need your green pass to enter into it. Have it ready. Highly recommended to arrive in the morning. Small thing I would recommend to change it to have everything written in English as well not only Italian on the site. Apart from this It fully deserves a 5 star.

Much smaller side, than the much more famous Pompeii. Yet, if you must choose and have only time for 1 of the 2, go here! Good information in multiple languages, very well preserved sides, better if you have less time. Basically, time/quality based it outclassed Pompeii on all aspects.

This place is amazing and well worth a visit unlike Pompeii you could easily see all of Herculaneum in about 3-4 hours. It's about 45-50 minutes train ride from Sorrento and a 10 minute walk from the train station. The only negative would be Ercolano as it is a bit dirty and you would expect such an area with a lot of tourists to be better kept. The trains are colourful and interesting.

Very interesting place. You literally walk through history. There's always excavation or maintenance work going on, so sometimes things are closed. When you buy a ticket online, there is some missing brochure and commentary. Otherwise, I'm thrilled with my visit. If you come early, avoid the crowds and the weather is much better.

An amazing place full of history. A newer smaller location than the Pompeii ruins, this site also contains more of an atmosphere of what it must of been like at that time. Houses still very intact with amazing paintings on the walls & wood features still in the doorways. A must see if visiting Pompeii, as only a short train ride down the beautiful coastline.

I didn't feel too enthralled when we arrived in the car park, partly due to the torrential rain. However once we started walking around it was really interesting. Some of the information boards could do with refurbishing but I was pleased to find that some of the information was written in English. We had a very good guide who really brought the place to life. I was amazed by how well some of the murals and mosaics are preserved, and so colourful. Also fantastic that we could get so close to these ancient remains, and even walking on some of the mosaic floors. Definitely worth a visit and friends who have been to Pompeii said that they prefer Herculaneum even though its smaller.

Went in the late fall in 2023. Beautiful and quiet, almost no crowds at all which allowed us to take our time and look around. There was an eery quietness to the day, with Mt Vesuvius overlooking the ruins. There were plenty of places to sit throughout, and a clean bathroom. There wasn't any real place to eat in the park, so either bring your own or stop at one of the places nearby just outside the park. The mini museum has some fantastic things to see, it is quiet and clean. If you have problems walking over rough terrain, or up and down hills you may have problems with this site. It's much smaller than Pompeii but still quite vast, and some very up and down areas. Rocky areas can be tricky and some areas are narrow going into.

The lesser-known Archaeological wonder of Naples. Perhaps even better preserved than Pompeii and much quieter. Id definitely recommend giving this place a visit. The skeletons at the docks are eerie and give you a sense of what it must have been like to live through the eruption of Vesuvius.

(Translated by Google) Because it is very interesting from the historical and cultural point of view, kept quite well and with a good organization. Average prices. Then it is not huge like Pompeii, the tour lasts 2h and something with many stops in the shade (which are necessary, I assure you, as it is necessary to have a lot of water!); therefore I recommend it to families with children, to approach them to similar visits which can be exhausting for them. Even without a "human" guide, we were able to take a tour well informed by the audio guides taken at the entrance (tip: equip yourself with headphones, so you save on rent). Plenty of parking available and easy enough to get to the site. One flaw: As internal refreshment there are only distributors (perhaps because of Covid?) And the coin changer was broken ... and obviously we didn't have any.

Words cannot describe the beauty of the San Severe Chapel. Regardless your religious believes, you cannot admire the beauty of the Chapel (amazing paintings) and the marble statues. The veiled Christ is probably the most magnificent masterpiece I have seen in all my travels. It is magnetic! You cannot stop staring at it. Beautifully crafted it seems like a real person is sleeping. Amazing, simply amazing. Pictures are taken from the web because it is forbidden to take pictures inside the chapel.

It was surely a wonderful archeological site if you have never visited Pompeii before. For those who already have visited Pompeii better keep 13€ in your pocket. However if you have enough time and are qualified for the discount ticket 2€ then go there. It's less touristic than in Pompeii. In the photo you'll see how deep 2000 years can bury a town.

I only came to know about the place when I was looking up ways to get to Vesuvius and it was a convenient stop when traveling from Naples to Vesuvius. While not as famous or as big as Pompeii, the ruins are really well preserved here as compared to Pompeii and the wall paintings are so vibrant it’s hard to believe how old they are. Not too many tourists visit so it’s really easy to get tickets on the spot but it’s really hard to get enough people to form a group for a guided tour so we ended up without a guide. But visiting Pompeii the day after with a guided tour, I could easily piece the details together later. It’s also a lot more pleasant to walk around Herculaneum without the crowd of Pompeii. Definitely worth a visit if you’ve got an hour or 2 to spare.

Wow, just wow. the history, the beauty, the unimaginable suffering. Visit in the afternoon, as there isn't as many tourists. The story behind this forgotten town is incredible.

Amazing place to visit and see the fantastic work done to restore the village also to find out what happened to its people during the eruption of Vesuvius. A lot of walking may not be suitable if you have mobility problems. The roads are large stones with high steps onto pathways either side. Very interesting and a must see if you are a history lover. Can be very hot you'll need water hat sunscreen and comfy shoes.

Herculaneum is a fascinating place and one that you must visit! Some of the villas are in amazing condition and takes you back in time. The location was not very crowded when we went on a Monday morning and tickets were easy to purchase on site. Don’t miss the Antiquarium and boat exhibits - located in two small buildings on the left side, before the path down to the ruins. We were disappointed to find that the walkway to the boathouses were closed with no warning / signage beforehand. You used to be able to walk in front of the boathouses on a platform to see the skeletons up close. Now you can only view them from the entrance to the ruins from up high or up close on a platform from which you can hardly peer inside - photo attached.

These remains are really well preserved. The site is much smaller than Pompeii but detail in the frescos and the fact there is original charred wood still there is fantastic. Took me an hour on the train from Sorrento and a 10 minute walk downhill to the gate. €14 entry fee, there are guides for hire who will walk with you. I've wanted to visit the foothills of Vesuvius for some time, and was lucky enough to get a few hours to visit Herculaneum. I had wanted to visit Pompeii, but Herculaneum is closer to Naples, better preserved, and open later. I was there for just 2 Hours, which was nowhere near enough time to see it all, but does give you time to get a snapshot of some of the amazing structures and murals that still exist. I'd recommend getting an audio guide, and give yourself a good 4 hours to spend your time wandering around. When you've finished walking take time to look at the items found and placed in the museum buildings, and don't forget to walk down to the historic shoreline to see the bones of those who perished, sheltering in the arches under the sea wall. Because Herculaneum was buried by volcanic material, it is significantly lower than present day ground level. This means the site is totally exposed to the sun, without the cooling breeze you'd get at ground level, so make sure you take something to protect you from the sun, water, and a good pair of trainers with you

My parents have been to Pompeii but heard this was much better, so we did a private tour and wow was it amazing to see all the walls, murals, tile floors, doors, and more still intact due to the mud preserving it. I recommend doing a tour/guide because there is so many small details and amazing facts you might miss. Don't miss the 2 small museums either!

Easy to access by train and walk to, we didn't have a guide, just walked around. There was a lot of signage up. The boat is really interesting to see in the building by the visitor area and the museum pieces. There is so much more to see in the buildings than Pompeii. The preservation is unreal.

Much smaller and easier to get around than Pompeii. Probably 2/3 hours is enough. Unfortunately there were a few areas closed including the baths which was disappointing but I suppose they've got to maintain these areas sometime. However, gives a good insight into the past. Didn't buy tickets in advance but a very little wait, not sure if it's like that all the time.

Great experience! Small version of Pompei with more preserved roofs and wooden elements. Most exciting thing is that some portion of the ancient town still remains uncovered and lie under urban housing.

This site was very impressive! Worth a couple of hours of your day to stop by and see. Some things you can't see at Pompeii, and much better preserved. Amazing to see the original height on the city compared to the current city around it. Free parking available within a 10 minute walk, but a slightly sketchy feel to it. We had no issues.

This place is stunning! So much history! One star left for the guide who was a total DISAPPOINTMENT; astronomic price (2h = 120€), low English skills and no change in end (“sorry, i don’t have any change, I’ll keep the rest, okay?”)

(Translated by Google) Ruins of the city of Hercaluneum after the destruction by Vesuvius. Much, much smaller than Pompeii, but here you see other things: organic material is better preserved due to the other way of destruction (lava mud instead of hot ash): wood is still visible in places, colors are brighter, skeleton instead of casts of cavities etc. Very worthwhile to take a look here in addition to Pompeii. (Translated by Google) In 79 A.D. a sudden roar interrupted the daily flow of life on the slopes of Vesuvius. A column of volcanic material rose up to 14 km in height, releasing a rain of lapilli and pumice which, moved by the wind, began to settle on Pompeii and the nearby towns. It was the beginning of the catastrophe. In a few hours the volcano released an impressive amount of pyroclastic material that will forever transform the landscape of the Vesuvius area. Herculaneum was first invested by burning clouds with a temperature of about 400 ° that traveled at a speed of over 80 km per hour and then by mudslides that buried the city under a blanket of about 20 m of volcanic material.

Known as Cappella Sansevero Art Museum, or Chapel of Santa Maria della Pietà, this Neapolitan building contains a diverse collection of ornate sculpture visible for just 7Euro. Adhering to a strict photography policy, circumvented only through time and patience, expect to spend an hour in the two small chambers, mesmerized by the ornate netting on Il Disinganno and breathtaking Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sanmartino. Downstairs guests will also find two anatomical studies of human vasculature that long pre-date the "Bodies" exhibits touring globally

A must see, one of the most important roman archaeological site. Excellent historical location, well preserved houses, frescoes, wooden structures (unique in the world) and details of roman life. I think everything is better preserved than similar stuff in Pompeii (no hot pyroclastic wave, only mud covering the structures), and streets are less crowded. The numbering of the houses on site is different than on some maps!

Good to visit as it is less crowded than Pompei. More compact and easy to see in a few hours. The entrance is hard to find, so follow the arch entrance through the parkland over looking the ruins. This is a more direct route to access the park when walking from the train.

Many people skip Herculaneum once they had visited Pompeii. This is a mistake. Herculaneum offers much different experience. It is smaller and much more intimate place. Roman houses and their interiors are much more preserved than those in Pompeii. You can see furniture, statues and excellent frescoes. You also have to see famous skeletons of people trying to hide in boat shelter. Very sad and strong experience.

Ercolano is also nowhere near as full as Pompeii and many buildings are even better preserved. Go there, see and be amazed. You can see the entire site in one day, it's not that big and you can get to the archaeological park very easily by public transport. (Translated by Google) Herculaneum is really worth seeing and can definitely be measured against Pompei. While Pompei is simply huge, we found Herculaneum to be even better preserved. There are many great houses and mosaics to visit. The former boathouse with the many skeletons is also an absolute highlight. You can either take one of the many guides on site or the cheaper audio guide. We took the audio guide and everything is really well explained in German. Herculaneum is about 30 minutes by train from Naples. The station is called Ercolano-Scavi. From the train station you walk another 15 minutes to the excavation site.

Very well preserved! Worth paying for a tour guide at the entrance. We paid 70€ for 1 hour tour guide for 4 people. I enjoyed it a lot better than Pompeii. If you don’t want to pay for a tour guide youtube had audio books and a couple videos you can listen to along the way. But the tour guide was much better because we asked a lot of questions.

(Translated by Google) Visit carried out in the first week of October 2020, few people and practically zero queues, at a price of about 10 euros each it is possible to enter and visit the entire site. It should be considered as a city and not as a mine of works of art, a minor city different from Pompeii, but no less important, with its urban physiognomy, with its civilization and, more importantly, with the his human face. To fully appreciate the history and beauty that exude from the city it is highly recommended to take a guided tour with one of the official guides of Herculaneum, who can be found at the entrance of the archaeological site. In the city it is still possible to observe the restorers at work who are responsible for maintaining and preserving the numerous Roman frescoes and very well preserved structures. The entrance to the archaeological site is located 10 meters below sea level, and therefore it is necessary to go down a ramp to access it. At the entrance to the site, after crossing a bridge that allows you to overcome stagnant water, it is possible to glimpse the bone remains reconstructed with plaster casts of the lava flows that in 79 BC suddenly buried the city of Herculaneum and its inhabitants. Going up the stairs you access the ancient streets of the city proper. The feeling is that of being inside a still inhabited Roman city. The Roman streets are perfectly preserved as well as some houses and structures present at the time. Highly recommended visit because it allows you to totally immerse yourself in an ancient Roman village.

Next to Pompei the second important excation site of a Roman city incinerated and buried by the eruption of nearby Mt. Vesuvio in 79 C.E. Lots of pretty intact structures, mosaics, and artifacts. In Roman times the city was right on the beach. Now it's about 15-20 meters below the current town level and quite a bit away from the water.

Took a drive to Herculaneum to visit the ruins. As with any ruins, rich history. You can see the whole area within 2 hours. It’s a very small historical site compared to Pompeii, but never the less, it was a great visit.

  • 5/5 arnostu 2 years ago on Google
Very interesting place. I haven't yet been to pompeii, but I'm lead to believe that Ercolano is smaller. We got an audio guide which was really good, but I think maybe a real guide would be better. No cafe open (not sure there is one) and the shop is quite small. There are vending machines to buy drinks snacks and ice cream inside, and a cafe near the car park. We didn't book in advance on a Saturday and it wasn't too busy. Definitely a must see.

  • 5/5 David R. 2 years ago on Google
Like Pompeii but smaller. Lots of ruins to look around in. Small outbuildings with examples of pots, jewellery, and other items that have been found. Parking was easy, though we did arrive early. Traffic around the town was awful. For best experience, arrive early before it warms up.

  • 5/5 Alex L. 2 years ago on Google
Certainly not as prominent as Pompeii, but a good way to see the more day-to-day life of ancient inhabitants. The scale is small enough to take everything in a single afternoon, while pausing to examine the details of the many buildings. If you have a single day, go to Pompeii, but if you are around for a couple of days, definitely worth the visit.

  • 5/5 Lauren S. 2 years ago on Google
I arrived around 1:30 and somehow I got a discount of 13euro. So sometimes it's cheaper to just show up. I had heard this site was better than Pompeii, so I went there first. It was jaw-dropping. Towards the end I was starting to get tired, so I kept thinking maybe I should pass on the next room. Then I would go in the room and and see something fantastic. Transportation to the park is the biggest issue. Both herculaneum and Pompeii should get together to tell Trenitalia to fix their GD "interrupted" line because the Circumvesuviana is packed like a train in Mumbai. I expect they will be putting us on the roof next. The buses are worse because of the traffic. Has Milan totally abandoned Southern Italy?

  • 5/5 Joyce T. 2 years ago on Google
Amazing well preserved ruins! It's amazing how most of the structures are still intact! Highly recommended! Personally preferred this than Roman Forum in Rome but they're different :)

  • 5/5 mike j. 2 years ago on Google
One of the jewels of the area (at least from the places I had the time to visit). Magnificent scale that gives a better and approachable view of what happened during the Vesuvius eruption. Here you will find two floor houses, extraordinary frescoes, Allow 3-4 hours for an adequate visit. Do not miss the ancient harbour level with the rooms all the unfortunate escapers were blocked. It is really a special place. Rewarding compact, more relaxing than Pompeii with interesting small museum houses and bookshop. Pls do not miss

  • 5/5 Joanna M. 2 years ago on Google
Fantastic! I can't believe how big the city was. There are shops and theatres and even an amphitheater. You need at least 3 hours to explore and the My Pompeii app or a guide is recommended so you can get the most out of the trip.

  • 4/5 Cristi 2 years ago on Google
Absolutely impressive to walk around this well preserved ancient city. The baths, some houses are stunning, like the gliding doors or the various mosaics. Few things remained in situ, so you need to see the Naples museum to fully understand how well things were preserved in the mud underground. Very good in October on a working day morning. 13 euro. Wished to have had more panels as you walk around, not just sell the audio guide.

  • 5/5 Greg K. 2 years ago on Google
Much more smaller and concentrated than Pompeii, but since it was "discovered" much later - it is better preserved. Many of the frescos are amazing. While you can "see" it in 3-4hrs, we spent the whole day and still could have spent longer. Visit Pompeii first, then come over and check out Herculaneum. It's definitely worth the visit.

  • 5/5 Ann F. 1 year ago on Google
I haven't been to Pompeii so I can't compare. Given that it was buried in 5 times the amount of debris as Pompeii, Ercolano is incredibly well preserved. I spent about 5 hours there including the 2 museums. There were no queues, toilets are few and not very well maintained. (Bring a clothespeg). There are vending machines for water and snacks. I think it was around a 10 to 15 minute walk from the train station but I used the exit signs which made it longer. I would recommend a visit

  • 5/5 David H. 1 year ago on Google
Loved this place. It was worth seeing. We spent two hours here and i could have didn't at least one more. We rented the little audio tour MP3 players from the front desk. We did the tour at our own place. It was worth every minute spent here. I recommend that if you're are visiting it during spring, summer, or fall, that your arrive early. This place gets hot! We started walking around at 10:30 and i wish to heck that we'd have skipped breakfast and gotten there early.

  • 5/5 Rob K. 1 year ago on Google
What a stunning experience! When I entered the site I was amazed it was so deep in the ground. Buried under meters of lava and ash the site has been recovered and has come out in a better state than Pompeii. It's not as crowded as Pompeii and a parking lot in the shade is at the entrance.

  • 5/5 Amara M. 1 year ago on Google
Showed up just at last entry of 6pm, which was such a great choice. Most visitors had cleared out by then so we could explore the houses and streets all to ourselves. The sun was also beginning to set so the ruins were bathed in the beautiful golden light. It shut at 7pm, and we managed to explore it all just within that hour. Also got free tickets as it was the first Sunday of the month.

Very well preserved, must visit place. We spent about 2.5 hours to see almost everything and it was really nice. Make sure to take your own water with you. Also, we had Campania Arte Card which helped us enter for free and without any waiting. If you are planning to visit both Pompeii and Ercolano, we can advise having one.

Had visited the Pompei site the day before. It’s a lot smaller but still offers a great experience. Took 3 hours to do comprehensively with no tour guide. Regretted not having audio tour guide as minimal literature/explanations around site. The level of destruction and what’s remaining is different to Pompei. More affluent in parts with some multi storey houses.

Amazing place to see! Relaxed, explore at leisure through houses from 2000 years ago, preserved to an amazing degree by being buried in ash for over 1800 years. Beautiful decoration survives and there are so many buildings with large amounts of their original construction surviving.

  • 5/5 Richard E. 9 months ago on Google
Smaller but less crowded than its more famous neighbour, so no need for elbows out. Very much on a par for its historic interest. Very hot and exposed, so take plenty of drinking water.

Thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Herculaneum despite the rain. The site is well organised and clearly marked/signposted to save you getting lost and the entry price is very reasonable. The only drawback I could mention is that the 'food hall' is a room full of vending machines but other than that we had a lovely day. Very informative and educational.

Really amazing. More detailed than Pompeii in mosaics. The townspeople met a worse ending than Pompeii’s. Buried the whole town deep creating a new ocean shoreline far from the edge of town.

Phenomenal experience! Absolutely stunning frescoes and well preserved buildings give a look back into earlier life. If you are in a hurry, do the tour with a guide. The streets are winding and you may not exit on your first try. Audio guide is good if you have time to wander.

  • 5/5 Rachel J. 6 months ago on Google
There was so much rich history here. It’s best to have a guided tour to understand what you’re looking at because the ruins can be confusing otherwise. Crowded but much less than other attractions in the region. Nice restaurants and vendors onsite. The museum you visit after the park is also very detailed and nice. It was cool to see some preserved/mummified corpses.

An absolutely incredible archeological site with well preserved structures and artifacts from 79 AD. If you are exploring the past and visiting Pompeii then this place won't let you down. On a more practical note, there is car parking, vending machines, toilets and takes around 2 hours to fully explore.

Remarkable heritage of the historical village destroyed by in 79. All the remaining building s and living areas inspired us that the life in ancient Roman was even more convenient and highly developed than today.
