The main thing to note is that you need a ticket. The number of people who arrived with no ticket was substantial. You can't get one at the top. You can buy one at any of the tour companies locally in Pompeii (approx €35), or via the official site (cheaper). There are various online sellers too. You can get a local bus from Pompeii which is €3.60 and the timetable is available online. It seems punctual and reliable. Bus seems a better idea than a car as it takes you further up the hill, and is about the same price (for 1 person anyway) The walk itself is pretty good. You will need shoes rather than sandals for the walk. Amazing views of Naples and the surrounding area. The crater is pretty cool to see too. There are a few shops on the way up for souvenirs or beverages. I had a cheeky wine for 2 bucks. It made for a good photo

The hiking to the gran cono is one of the best choice to take the great view to the Napoli bay as well as the city. The path is well maintained and suitable for family day out. A bit pity that the sky was with some smog on the day of visiting.

Amazing drive up what is currently a dormant Vesuvius. Once at the top it is tight for parking, then a 10 min walk to get to the crater. You can walk around about half the craters edge peering into the centre of the crater. However the best bit is the incredible views over the Bay of Naples - absolutely breath taking. You can also look down over Pompeii somewhere in the distance. You may even see some vents inside the crater releasing steam.

Fantastic hike up Vesuvius! Make sure to buy your tickets online before getting there as the 4G doesn’t work very well up there! We parked and then caught a shuttle that takes you another 2 miles up to the entrance. Shuttle was €3 for round trip up and down! The hike is a steep 1 mile to get to the top! Easier than I thought it would be, but it is steep. There are no restrooms along the route at all. However there are 3-4 booths along the route selling , drinks, snacks and souvenirs! We got there at 9am and were home by 1:00(living about 40 minutes away). It’s a great half day trip!

Very nice place, also with the fog on the top. Take a good shoes. Good bus connection with Pompeii Archeological Park.

The climb to the summit was epic, they said 1 km but felt like 5 as it is a pretty good incline! Loved the tour and would recommend you are in decent shape if you want to climb to the top!

Slow and steady wins the race. Astonishing views of the Mediterranean and Capri Island on the way to the top. Well worth the hike to the crater. There are plenty of resting points and no pressure to race to the top so we were able to go at at our own pace.

A great experience, it's around a 40 minute walk up from where the bus drops you off. We walked as far round as we were able and found 3 places where you could stop for a sit down, have a hot drink and browse some souvenirs. It does get cold up there so make sure you bring some layers.

Got the tour bus up then hiked the rest. You'll need decent hiking boots for this. Took 30 minutes roughly. I'm unfit but I survived this hike. Highly recommend. Only toilets is at the shop, you have to buy something from them to use the loo

Ridiculous how one cannot get tickets there at the entrance. There’s a validity to the tickets (30 min before and 90 min after booked entry time). Unforeseen events may cause one to come at the last minute but because the online ticket expired one minute ago or expired even at the same exact minute it would expire, they won’t let one in. There’s no WiFi or possible network connection in that area, so there’s almost a 0% chance one can get a new online ticket. So many people lining up by the entrance because of the same problem. People travel from different parts of Italy just to arrive and get denied entry. It could have been a really good experience if the park would have been more tourist-friendly.

At first, we can't reserved the tickets. They have verry bad system. Near a gate stayed two verry annoying guys. We had to wait 40 minutes ONLY to enter the input queue. But despite all this, the volcano is a very beautiful tourist spot.

Got a bus ride up to the car park and was expecting the rest to be hard to get up but to my surprise it was pretty easy! Definitely would recommend wearing comfy shoes and suncream! The view from the top is breath taking! Plus a very nice place to get engaged;)

Beautiful views worth the walk! How ever wouldn't recommend going on a windy day! Very nervous when you get hit by strong gusts of winds. Few scared people going back down however the staff are very friendly & helpful!

Definitely a must see when visiting this area. Can recommend parking your car on the northeast side of the volcano and hiking up (Path 1: https://www.vesuviusnationalpark.it/en/paths) to enjoy the volcanic landscape and dodge all the major tourist groups. To visit the crater you need a 10 euro ticket (https://www.vivaticket.com) even if you don’t need/want the guide. Recommend to buy it in advance as the reception is bad up the volcano.

Wonderful experience to hike to the crater of the Vesuvius. You get amazing view at Naples area and a good look into the crater. It is steep but not very long, but the snow made it a bit difficult and slippery now and then. The round trip (sentiero) around the crater was closed halfway and they sometimes close all of the area when weather is bad. We travelled with the bus from Pompeii. You need to buy ticket online. We didn't manage to do so, because the payment could not be verified, so we booked tickets at Pompeii station. They add 5 euro's to the price though. At the top (parking place and crater) there is bad reception for you phone, so don't expect it to work, although it did some times. All the shops prefer cash, but if you insist they accept your card. People in the shop at the top of the crater are friendly.

The route to the crater of Vesuvius is a very nice route in nature with a very nice view towards the Gulf of Naples. There is a lot of parking space and then there is a hiking trail to the top of Vesuvius. Unfortunately, the path to the top closes in the afternoon, so if you want to combine it with a visit to Pompeii, it is better to come here first and then to Pompeii.

Absolutely amazing. Breathless view, heavenly landscapes. Great weather not to hot and not to cold, October is one of the best month and perfect for the climb. Be there and feel the power of the Vesuvio with his thousands years is something extraordinary. From the Vesuvius’ cone you can see and control everything like a king from his throne. He is one of the Naples symbols and honor. You must visit one time in your life and you will never regret it.

Definitely worth a visit for the views and the experience. Make sure you buy your tickets online before arriving as there was no ticket office at the park entrance. No phone network either at the top. There were no toilet facilities anywhere that I could see. You could buy drinks, snacks and souvenirs at several stands. Paying for parking in advance was also helpful. You can also pay €3 per person to take you up the road to the top of the trail and back down. The shuttle drivers were rude sadly, and even harassing some of the female tourists walking on the road. I was glad we booked an early ticket as it got very hot by mid morning (in June). Not many shady places to rest. Our guide was helpful and spoke English. In general though staff were rude and not very helpful. Taxi and bus drivers at the top of the road, by the entrance were careless and there was little space to get out of their way. Once inside, the views and the crater are stunning. You can see many beautiful flowers along the trail.

Truly beautiful. The hike up from the car park is quite easy, takes about half an hour. It’s also not overly steep but the ground is sandy/loose so you can slip, especially on the way down. You can walk around about half the crater but that half gives you some incredible views of Naples and the surrounding area. Well worth visiting.

The whole experience is worth sweating yourself out to get to the top! You can take the bus from Pompei, right next to the train station (3€), after that the bus gets you ALMOST to the ticket place, so you walk for around 3-4 min with 15° inclination. After that you check your PREPAID and reserved IN ADVANCE ticket and you can proceed to the entrance of the hike route. The thing that they don't tell you is that you HAVE TO GET TO THE TOP ALONE in order to find your guide and the meeting point. At this point, every 20 min there is a guide speech, that inform you about the park, the volcano, etc and then you continue (without the guide) till you walk half of the volcano's corona and this is where the journey ends. The view, all the sceneries, the whole adventure is amazing and it is worthy, despite the odds and the exhaustion that you may face. There are 2 points where you can have something to eat and drink and after that, there are 3 more to the top. Even at the end of the tourist zone there is a very nice place , with great view, where you can sit, eat and have glass of local wine. There were a lot of kids, so don't hesitate taking them with you. Just keep an eye on them the whole time. Not suitable for disabled. There is an ambulance on standby. N.B. Be sure about the bus schedule, because if you miss the last bus, you will find yourself walking down the whole mountain on foot (1.5 hours appr.), which is not the best option after all the hiking.

Fantastic to visit with great views. No toilets other than at the very expensive café near the car park. We were not allowed in ahead of our allotted entry time and there was no shade so do not arrive too early. Recommend good foot wear and take water if visiting in the heat.

Breathtaking views all the way up! Taking a tour bus is defiantly the way to go. The bus takes you 1000m up and from the gate entrance you walk about 300m to the top of mt. Vesuvius. You need a minimum of 1.5 hr to go from the gate to the top and back. Bring water unless you want to pay $$$ The trail is mostly loose gravel so it can get slippery. A walking stick is a nice to have if you remember to pack one. The views are spectacular! I only give 4/5 because of the no bathroom. As a national park I wish there was.

As requested, we had bought the parking ticket in advance for 6€. We did not encounter any problems finding a parking spot and we did not have to wait long for the shuttle bus for which we paid 3€ per person. When we arrived we still had to walk a rather steep gravel path up to the crater of the volcano - a good physical condition is helpful. The view from above it is breathtaking and the crater impressive. Attention: There are no public toilets available. All in all, definitely worth a visit!

A must see place to visit when in Naples / Sorrento Peninsular. There is a regular public bus service that takes you to the peak. Note: you must book a time slot literally MONTHS in advance. Don't just turn up and expect to "pay and go up". You will be turned away. The main bus / coach stop is still a good walk from the summit of the volcano. Be warned that the path can be steep in places and is almost entirely composed of very slippery (especially when dry) volcanic ash rubble. Do not wear sandals or other open footwear as you will have a very slow and painful ascent. Wear proper shoes / trainers / boots. They will become very dusty. At the crater there is the expected cafe with exorbitant cash only prices. Someone with decent level of fitness will take 20 minutes to ascend and 20 minutes to descend.

Okay it was quite a heavy walk with 3 little girls, but worth it! Good to wear good shoes. Bring water. And preferably go early in the morning when it's high summer; than the temperature is Okay. The crater was impressive and the view of Napoli , Pompeii and the sea amazing. On the highest point are some shops to buy souvenirs, drinks and snacks. No toilets though! If you go with a transfer bus, they'll bring you all the way to the starting point of the walk. If you drive yourself you have to park a couple of hundred meters lower, and you need to walk alongside the road up for a while.

Absolutely worth the driving and the hike to the top. Amazing views all over. From the end of the trail at the top you should enjoy a drink while trying to spot Pompeii downtown. Be aware: Online ticket in advance is an absolute must!

What I did not find on the website when I booked my tickets: the parking lot is 2 kilometers below the entrance to the park (where your online bought tickets will be checked). Those 2 kilometers can easily be walked along the road, or you can take a shuttle bus from the parking to the park entrance. From the park entrance it's about a kilometer (20 minutes) walking over a gravel path until you reach the top of the mountain and the edge of the crater. Unfortunately it was a bit cloudy the day we went there so we did not see much of the views, but the crater itself was nice to see.

You need to be fit and healthy as there is a long 25-minute uphill walk from the car park to the crater rim. It was very hot and tiring. There are no seats for a rest. Wear trainers as the track up is gravel and covered with loads of stones. The view from the top is fantastic with great views of Naples and inside the crater.

Worth every penny.. The view is spectacular and on top you can even enjoy a good cup of coffee for €2-€3... It is a good climb though and there is no possibility to go to the bathroom not even at the entrance of the park... There is a store at the entrance but the toilets are only for customers..

So the volcano itself is amazing and well worth the visit, but from my experience I would suggest either buying your ticket online before you go, or going with a tour group (and be selective) that includes the access ticket, because buying a ticket there was a bureaucratic nightmare and there is no actual ticket office there where you can buy a ticket with cash. The local bus to get there was really great and the nice driver stopped half way up the Volcano so we could take pictures and the ticket price of €3.10 for a single trip was fair.

Amazing view, it's a must have if you are in Campania. There are different option to go up to the parking spot from Herculaneum, but you have to take a not-that-easy walk to the crater. If you are in average shape, it's fine. (It could use more toilets.)

Loved it. Got the tickets at the tourist office at the train station and we paid for them 3-4 euros more because we didn't buy them online the day before. We also paid for the transportation 15euros at the same place, instead of going with public transportation that costs 6euros total. The ride lasts for about 45min in one direction. When you get to the place where the bus leaves you, you have to walk for about 20 25 min up the steep hill and there's no shade at all. There's coffee shops there, and places that sell souvenirs. The path takes you about half way around the volcano rim and then you have to walk back to the bus. I think about 2 hours is enough to walk to the end and back.

Great visit, easy hike up to the summit crater. No issues with altitude since it is just over 4,000ft. I wish there were more explanations for the historical lava flows, but it was still very impressive. There were guides to provide brief explanations along the way. Best to visit early before the crowds. Park at the bottom of the "hill", it is an easy 30min walk to the main entrance. Currently you have to purchase admission in advance online, it is part of their crowd control management. Cost was about 11-12euro per adult. You can bring pets on a leash of they are small and you clean up after them. There are no bathrooms available when you are ascending to the crater, so use before you go. Plenty of souvenir and coffee shops in the park. Photos show condition of the trails.

Once in a lifetime. Above the clouds with stunning views of Naples bay when they lifted. Lots of other tourists with the same idea. From the bus it's a 20-30 minute step walk. Take the sticks offered if you're overweight or not used to hiking. Glad I did it!

Impressive location with an incredible history. One of the few opportunities to see an active volcano from above. It reaches the top very quickly and I think you have to wait for a guide at the entrance because it is very helpful in understanding what is happening with this volcano.

Very interesting area with spectacular images at the top. The crater was amazing and its worth climbing 300 mt. To the top. Beware there are no toilet facilities in the park because there is no water infrastructure. So it is better to visit the toilet before entering the park.

Bus trip up was winding but comfortable in our air conditioned bus. Our time frame was tight and we had to hustle on our hike up. The views, smoking earth and little shop up top were all fantastic. Allow time for the hike, the ground is loose and good footwear is a must. My first volcano and I thought it was spectacular.

Magical place with so much history. The iconic Vesuvius can be reached till about 1 km before summit. Then its a very rocky and steep walk. Really enjoyed the guide with a brief but complete explanation. Also we sang together funicular on top of the Vesuvius. Great memory. Big sidenote is that there are no toilets on the volcano . Only if you buy expensive stuff in the tourist shop there is a small change you van use their facility.

Incredible views with only a fairly short (20 minute) walk to the top . This is a very steep incline so you do need to be considerate of that but plenty of space to rest on the way to the top . 3 shops available from the bottom to top but only 1 toilet available through which is at the bottom . I'd only reccomend doing this as a tour in a coach . Getting from Port to here driving yourself can be very dangerous if you don't know the roads . But 100% worth the travel . Sights that pictures do not do justice .

  • 5/5 Juan F. 7 months ago on Google
The road to the top is quite easy to access, but upon reaching the summit, we only notice parking designated for buses and bikes. Nevertheless, there is free parking available before reaching the peak, and there's also a service for taxi drivers to take you up there. Prior to your visit, ensure that you've booked your tickets online, as they tend to sell out quickly.

Highly recommend this activity, it was the highlight of my trip. And contrary to what others say, if you are in good health and average fitness, you do not require walking sticks or boots. I observed people completing this walk in flip flops, which was certainly not ideal but suggests the level of difficulty.

We booked our ticket for the coach and entrance to Vesuvius. We were told to wait for the coach by the lined area were is said stop , which we did . The coach approached but reversed further up the road . There was confusion as to where we were to get on , lots of people rushed over to the coach , we waited in the line as instructed , as the driver walked past someone asked were we to go over to the coach , he nodded . People were pushing to the front of the line, some very angry as they had been at the front of the queue then lost their place as people rushed over . Very disorganised and confusing !! The trip up the mountain was great , quite along walk and tough walk down but worth it . It was quite cloudy and visibility wasn't great , something to be aware over as it was a relatively clear day before heading up the mountain. Friends of ours went up two days later and were stopped from going all the way up due to dangerous weather conditions.

I'm not quite rating a volcano here, I'm also rating the lack of available information, the total bs that is trying to book anything in Italy without being scammed and the facilities (I.e.: toilets). Pretty cool spot though and we'll worth checking out

  • 2/5 Sherilyn D. 1 year ago on Google
The crater itself was quite fascinating however the venue is not what you'd expect from a hiking adventure trail. There is a constant swarm of buses bringing in a large number of tourists, shops selling souvenirs on every corner and it ended up being exhausting and not worth the half a day spent to wait in lines for the bus and get up there. Considering the area is designed to handle large crowds there are very poor amenities. The nearest toilet is in a small cafe at the bottom of the mountain that you can only use if you buy something and it was not in working order. A very disappointing experience overall. Also we asked about hiking some of the other trails at Vesuvius National park and were told there would be guides up there to take us (as we would lose ourselves if we went on our own). The lady providing information at the base of the mountain had no idea about these trails and said some of them have been closed for years.

Great hike up to the top. A bit laborious if it is in summer sun, but definitely worth it since you will find a spectacular view of the entire Sorrento coast and Capri island. The best method is to combine this trip with the Pompeii ruins trip since it is close to each other.

  • 4/5 Andy W. 1 year ago on Google
Very interesting site. Useful signage along the way. The parking place is a little bit far away from the entrance, small 8 persons-shuttle busses bring visitors to the entrance. But in the evening when dozens of visitors want to go back to their cars, there are not enough busses and that means either a long wait in the sun or a long walk in the sun. We decided for the latter option. But all in all an informative visit to the volcano!

  • 5/5 Vlad C. 1 year ago on Google
Very impressive and spectacular views, both of the crater of the volcano but also of the surrounding cities and the sea. On the negative side, there were no public toilets. You could only find some at the bars at quota 1000, but you had to buy something to use them, and things were a bit overpriced.

Yet another very popular place to go and explore. A steep climb at first, but levels off. There are food vendors at the bottom and at the top. Best to wear good sturdy shoes. Great location for many pictures, and enjoying the many views. Best to go to the bathroom beforehand. There are guides available up top, but are not really necessary. Enjoy.

The best attraction in Napoli. Beautiful view on the whole valley. The mountain is not to high, so is perfect for families with a small children

Feel like you’re on an alien planet! Short trip, my advice is to have the bus company write you down for an earlier bus back though - luckily I snuck on one otherwise would’ve had another hours wait for my allocated bus back

Come on Italy you can do better if this is a national park ! So much potential I glad I read Google reviews before heading up about tickets !

It is okay but mostly for the views from the vulcano over the city.

Great views once at the top, need good footwear and lots of water, really hot when we went, in fact too hot. Its pretty difficult to keep out of the sun once you start walking up. Dont forget the hat and sun screen

What can I say? You hike up a Vulcano, see the crater and rock formations and are absolutely stunned by nature! Incredible experience

My wife, two sons (5 and 2 years old) and I visited the Vesuvio in August. We booked our tickets as well as the parking lot in advance as we used our rental car to go there. From the parking lot you can either hike to the entrance or use the chargeable shuttle bus (we were a little bit disappointed that the shuttle bus is not included in the parking fee). For the hike you have to use the main street that is also used by all the buses and private shuttles. Therefore we decided to use the shuttle bus. The national park and the volcano is pretty nice and impressing. Also you have a great view on the surrounding cities and the sea. The hike in the national park is challenging with kids, but manageable (our older son was walking by himself most of the time and our younger son was in the child carrier on my back). All in all we had a great time and we enjoyed our visit of the Vesuvio.

This place is other worldly, I was fortunate to experience it foggy and then without fog as it cleared up on my exit. You’re given about a 2 hour window when you go by shuttle bus. But there’s other means of transportation to get back to the city. You’re better off buying the entry tickets online as you’ll save 5 euros and just pay for the the bus fee. This is a must see place in Italy

Stunning views, yet another amazing place with great historical stories surrounding it. It is really difficult to appreciate in pictures, but the terrain is steep and loose, make sure you wear appropriate footwear and take plenty of water as it gets hot fast in the day. And insect repellent- LOTS. There are no toilet facilities. Make sure you go before you go - we aren't bears, and you will have an audience. Did I mention insect repellent? Please don't bring your dogs in the midday sun. The ground gets hot and you are just being particularly unkind to them.

Normal people take longer than 30 minutes to reach the top, especially if you stop and take pictures (they make nice rest breaks). Save your money and don't buy suivuurs at the bottom, there are 5 gift shops that sell food and drinks too, even at the very top. But to use the bathroom at the bottom, you need to be a customer, water is cheap. The views are awesome. Don't go beyond the ropes like we saw people doing.

A must do when in Napoli! The hike up from the bus stop/parking will take you about 30-45m. The first part is very steep, so take it easy, but after the little shop it's much flatter. I recommend buying your tickets to the summit well in advance, as the tour companies buy them all for resale. Enjoy!

Was great yo see it in real live

Must see if you are in the area. Important is to remember to buy parking tickets and tickets to the summit, all online. From the parking you can take a taxi closer to the summit for just 2euro, remember cash, after that it is a 1k hike to the summit.

It is an interesting place, but would recommend it with a guide. Do keep in mind there is quite a bit that you need to climb in what essentially is sand, so it's not easy, so best to take some water with you, better to have more.

I felt as though I was struggling to keep my soul inside of my body climbing up. Amazing feeling once you get to the top but such a challenge. 10/10 do not recommend doing this in the summer.
