The Ponnani Great Jumu'ah Mosque, built in the 16th century, is said to have been built under the supervision of Zainuddin Makhdoom, a scholar from Yemen who wrote the famous book Fathul Mueen. This is where the familiar "Palli Dars" (Religious Studies Class) system began. Those who successfully complete their religious studies at Ponnani Masjidh will be awarded the degree of 'Musliyar'. People from all over Kerala and from Lakshadweep come here to study. In the past, dars were performed around a lamp placed in the center of the Masjidh, which was 90 feet long and 60 feet wide. Graduation ceremonies were also held in front of the lamp. This ceremony is known as 'Lantern Seating'. This lamp is still lit after the Maghrib prayer (evening prayer).

The Andunercha also known by the name Ponnani Andunercha falls in the month of March/April, just before the monsoon starts, and lasts for four days. It is the major festival of the renowned Ponnani Juma Masjid. Built about 600 years ago by Zainuddin Ibn Bin Ahmed (Zainuddin Makhdoom I), the masjid or mosque is constructed in a traditional Kerala architectural style with an extensive use of wood. A 500 year old lamp, believed to be used by Zainuddin Makhdum II, stands in the middle of the prayer hall. The mosque has played an important part in imparting Islamic doctrine and philosophy over the years.

The vital point of the controversy is still remaining unnoticed. We, first of all, have to take for granted that there is not only the Traditional Lamp (Nilavilakku) but a lot of MATERIALS used in our day to day life that are simultaneously found or used in our houses, places of worship or other social institutions regardless our faith, cast or social status. You can never spot a Hindu Vegetable Market or a Muslim Beef Market. Thus there is no controversy over the materialistic use of any material, but it (controversy) lies in the sacredness of the rituals done using that material. In other words, the ORIGINAL PURPOSE of the ritual (karma or عمل) is taken into consideration. It saddened me to read that 'the Muslims Scholars considered the lamp or fire as the symbol of knowledge'. It is a big mistake from our side to be unable to discriminate between the LITERAL and FIGURATIVE usages of words and meanings. It is true that Islam has called the KNOWLEDGE or WISDOM in name NOOR or LIGHT. But that naming can only be understood as a figurative usage, not in a literal meaning. The ritual of 'Sitting Near Lamp' in Ponnani was never done to worship that lamp or fire, but it was done as a form of recollecting the predecessors who used to sit in the same place, and to obtain the sanctity and blessings by enacting a tradition. Back to the Controversial Lamp, the tradition of kindling a Lamp on the occasions of commencing functions and ceremonies means 'manual igniting of fire on a lamp in a particular posture, by a particular action and on a definite period of time'. That kind particularities can NEVER be found in the Ponnani Masjid or any Muslim worship places. The Muslims' Lamp is characterized by its representing the place or persons who used to use it. If it is to be seen as a symbolic one, why cannot you lit a 600 W fluorescent lamp, instead the Nilavilakku, on the stage, so that, hundreds of people can benefit from light..!!! IN SHORT, A TRADITION IS PROCLAIMED GOOD OR BAD IN ISLAMIC POINT OF VIEW, ONLY AFTER EXAMINING ITS ORIGIN OR REAL PURPOSE, AND THAT CAN ONLY BE DONE BY EMINENT SCHOLARS AS WELL.

Ponnani valiya Juma masjid is a historical monument in Kerala. It was established by zainuddin makhdoom I (avval). It's almost 500 years old. But the masjid, as in today's shape is not made by him as several documents points out. Plenty of people misunderstood as the masjid with it's today's characteristics was done by makhdoom 1 before centuries. Any way this masjid was a world famous islamic university at that time. Tremendous number of students, which includes foreigners also from Arab countries, Malaysia, Indonesia, srilanka... Seeked knowledge from this masjid......

The significance of Cheraman Juma Majsid in the Muziris Heritage Project lies in the fact that it is the first mosque in India. Built in 629 AD by Malik Ibn Dinar it is located in the district of Thrissur in Kerala, on the Paravur-Kodungallur road. The masjid is believed to have been renovated in the 11th century and also 300 years ago. The front portion was expanded in 1974 and further expanded in 1984.

Ponnani Juma Masjid was established by Zainudhin Makhdum, a Muslim spiritual leader in the year of 1510. It is Beautifully constructed with a mix of traditional Kerala Architecture and Islamic Architecture. It have 3 floor, the ground, first, and second. Apart ground floor, the upper floors are not that much used for praying now a days as worried about the strength. In the second floor, there provided an extra deck space which seems like a closed treehouse, and believed as it is a place for jinn to read quraan which is against the islamic teachings. The wooden beams, purlins and rafters used to construct the masjid is amazingly wonderful which we can't imagine now a days. The ablution area (Hőuďh) also have the traditional method. There is a big grave yard inside the compound. Also a special graveyard is constructed for the muslim scholar and worships are going on there which is against the islamic studies. Ladies are not allowed to the masjid for prayer, but allowed (for the shirk) to enter the graveyard to worship the scholar's graveyard.
