Amazed by the breadth and scope of the museum housed in a former convent. You can really feel the passion for the Basque culture and history. Also incredible that entry is free on Tuesday.

Definitely worth a visit to explore basque history and life in this museum built into the side of Mt Urgull combining modern design and a historic church. Amazing huge canvasses in the church

Absolutely worth the 6eur entrance fee! The building has 3 levels to take you on a trip of the city's history, with some temporary exhibits waiting as well. The whole tour could be comfortably completed in 2hours.

Was lucky to be there on a Tuesday when it is free but would have happily paid for the experience. Great coverage of a wide range of issues and topics. If things are not in English, they offer a translation board you can bring around or I found it easy to use my translation app. The videos in English were especially well-done and were so informative.

Fantastic museum. I recommend downloading the app before going for access to an audio tour. I enjoyed the history of San Sebastián as well as seeing all the regional art, both historical and contemporary. I got lucky to show up on a free day, which was nice. I wanted to get something at the gift shop to show my support but it wasn’t as good as the rest of the museum, which was incredible. Highly recommend visiting if you are in the area.

This museum is about old and contemporary Basque culture. It is housed in an old monastery so the architecture of most of the building is really great. I thought the exhibits were great. My friend who I was with is Basque, so he was my version of an audio tour, but I thought there was a lot of great information about the history of the Basque people and Basque country.

I visited this museum after the Guggenheim at Bilbao & found it a lot more fascinating!!! An exposition on death was fascinating, albeit a bit dark with the attire on show. All permanent exhibitions were fascinating, with information on the Basque history. A classical art room is also good. Housed in an converted convent, the building is also glorious. A must see!

This is a well-presented museum and can fill a couple of hours. However I expected more of a Basque point of view, when what it really seems to present is the history of the Basque region of Spain. So it has nothing to say about the Basque region that extends beyond the borders of Spain, little about the roots of Basque culture and why it has a different language to most of Spain, nothing that I saw about the language, gives no idea of the political drivers of Mondragon (the network of workers coops) and while the history of autonomy, nationalism and ETA is mentioned in passing it gives no sense of the oppression Basque people have felt that led to these movements. It also glorifies Spanish colonialism with not even a mention of the slavery and genocide this entailed. I know that museums often downplay anything seen as 'too political' but this one seems to do so to the point of being dishonest and often uninteresting. Ultimately I did not feel I learned much about the history of Basque culture through time, which is what the museum claims to offer.

This amazing museum of the Basque society located in Donostia-San Sebastián, addresses old and contemporary Basque culture, arts and history in a European, global context. It moved to its current location in 1932, Zuloaga plaza in the old town, at the foot of the hill Urgull. It occupies a former Dominican monastery complemented by a 21st-century extension. A must-see for those who love history, art and want to deviate a little from the usual crowded streets of places of the city center...

(Translated by Google) Excellent museum, I did not know it and the truth is that it is very good. It has a permanent Expo and others that tend to change. With the same ticket you can enter more than once a day, which comes in handy since it takes a long time to go through it. Recomendado

A museum and, at the same time, as a place to disseminate knowledge and create thought; it is an instrument to understand the present and build the future from encounters with the past and with our roots. In 2011, a major makeover of its facilities took place by adding an extension to the convent and reshaping its facilities along the lines of its new conceptual approach as a museum of the Basque society and citizenship.

San Telmo Museum, or STM is a museum addressing old and contemporary Basque culture, arts and history in a European, global context. It moved to its current location in 1932, Zuloaga plaza in the old town, at the foot of the hill Urgull. It occupies a former Dominican monastery complemented by a 21st century extension. San Telmo Museum has culminated a process of renewal and extension required to reach out to the public in this new 21st century. The keystone to this project is the small architectonic "gem" incrusted in Mount Urgull and designed by the architects Nieto & Sobejano, featuring a characteristic facade covered in plants. This new building, along with the 16th century Dominican convent housing the museum since 1932, made San Telmo a singular spot located right in the centre of San Sebastian, in the Old Town. From Tu-sat (10 am-6pm) close Mon(except Bank holydays).

If you're in San Sebastian and curious about Basque history and culture then this museum is a must visit. Beautiful integration of period sandstone public building and rock faced modern extension. Cafe on site, but didn't get to sample, this time...

We had high expectations when we decided to visit this museum in the beautiful city of San Sebastian. The visit was a huge disappointment. The museum has long corridors and a lot of space that is irrelevant to the museum. The people working in the museum were hiding rather than being helpful. And when they were found, they could not answer any question in any language except their own language. There are a few artifacts of interest on display. There is only one language used in the museum, and it is not English. So, this is a museum only for local people. It also needs to be better organized. For anyone visiting the gorgeous city of San Sebastian who does not speak, read, or understand the one language used in this museum, a visit is a total waste of time. It is the worst museum I have ever visited.

  • 5/5 Stan H. 7 months ago on Google
Fascinating history giving you information from the perspective of the local culture as well as your own culture. We learned so much! Bring headphones as they have QR codes that will help guide you if you don't speak Basques or Spanish. I would say a plan for 1 to 2 hours for the normal exhibits and another 30 minutes to 1 hour for other exhibits that might be there.

  • 4/5 Mike S. 8 months ago on Google
Very nice well organized museum. We bought the tickets on site but you can also purchase them online. The monastery is nice. The museum is well designed around it. Didn’t give it 5 stars because not everything has an explanation in English. And although they provide the option of audio, one has to download the app to access it, which when on travels can take up lots of data if not on wifi (although I don’t think they have English as an option).

  • 5/5 Thirza S. 9 months ago on Google
Good and informative museum, which provides a lot of context to being in the Basque Country. The different levels of the museum all tell a different story of Basque history and heritage, with a lot of audiovisual support. There's also a segment on Basque art, which I thought was really cool. Right now, there's three temporary exhibitions in addition to the permanent collection. On a more practical note, it's nice that the museum provides lockers so you can walk around freely. All in all, recommended when you're in Donostia on a rainy day.

A very well presented museum with a mix of classic and modern art, and a lot of dance costume etc. Great cafe too.

  • 5/5 Natalie O. 10 months ago on Google
Still interesting the third time around! The museum is free on Tuesdays. It has good facilities - locker with a 1 euro coin that you get back, lock stand for umbrellas. There are summary information sheets if you need to read the information in English/French.

Great museum featuring historic, cultural and architectural details of the life in the Basque Countryas well as art from local and Spanish and French painters.

  • 3/5 Emil H. 1 year ago on Google
Impressive works of art about basque history and amazing temporary exhibition of sculptures. Very scarce english translations and they are not taking responsibility or contextualizing Spain's very problematic colonial history and traditions.

  • 4/5 Philip Van M. 1 year ago on Google
This is a must see. Its showing basque history and surpression. At the beginning of each room you can find pamflets. These give you more info in English and French. Also take some time to check the beautiful courtyard and chapel. Sit down and look at the beautiful canvases that where made for this museum.

  • 5/5 Rachel P. 1 year ago on Google
To my mind a must see place if visiting Donostia. Too much to see/read in one visit. The Orteiza/Chillida exhibition was on when we were there, as well as the permanent exhibition which is a real mix of historical info. The paintings in the church are amazing, too, a real surprise. Loved the architecture of the building, too. Very decent restaurant.

This is one of my favorite museams ever... It was composed very well, and tells a great story of the Basque region from prehistoric to contemporary times. The architecture is a fresh combination of old and new, and the restored murals of the basilica are breathtaking.

Great place for art lovers to spend half a day. Tuesdays is free to pay a visit to museum. Beside a full history of San Sebastian, the museum includes some classical master pieces to enjoy, from various European and non-European artists.
