The Ahmed Zabana National Museum is a museum located in Oran. It's definitely recommended to visit when visiting the city. It is named after the Algerian national hero Ahmed Zabana executed by the French on May 19, 1956, in Algiers.

The Ahmed Zabana Museum is one of the most important museums in Oran and Algeria. It was named in honor of the martyr Ahmed Zabana, and was established in 1935 by the Geography and Archeology Foundation at the Palace of Fine Arts. The museum contains many artifacts, divided into three sections. The museum has antique coins, Roman and African artifacts, and natural history. Two gorgeous Roman mosaic pieces have been added. Enjoy a historical tour inside the museum and see lanterns, vases, ornaments and coins from the Punic collection. The museum provides a set of organized workshops to spread the culture of visiting museums as well as to support tourism in the city.

Oran's museum is little-visited by foreigners, but it is one of the keys to understanding the city, although the collection doesn’t always live up to the grandeur of the building. A large 1st-floor room tells the local story of the battle for independence, most moving being the list of local people executed by the French between 1954 and 1962. There are also interesting exhibits of ancient sculptures, some good mosaics and terracotta portraits. The extensive, neglected natural history collection includes giant lobsters and squid and, in the basement among the stuffed animals, a shark, all caught in the bay. The paintings are more surprising, being a mix of works by 20th-century Algerian artists, French Orientalists including Eugene Fromentin, and some 18th-century studies of mythical subjects.

Worth a visit if you're in town. Has a highly diversified collection of historical artefacts and natural history specimens, as well as a variety of ancient cultural pieces. The only downside is that many of the show rooms are not air-conditioned, so I wouldn't recommend visiting if it's too hot.

It was amazing the crew was welcoming and competent they would give ya some random info and fun facts about the artifacts, there's an art section with some great painting unfortunately you can't take pics of that section, but you free to do it anywhere else, I was a bit concerned about the mummified animals they weren't sealed properly so a specialist need to take a look I'm not an expert overall it was a nice afternoon

A bog standard provincial museum. Downside: acres of dusty glass cases containing miscellaneous bones, rocks and flakes of pottery, along with the same stuffed herons and pickled lizards as every other museum of its kind. Upside: moderately interesting French paintings of Oran (not good paintings, but tellingly orientalist); upstairs random ethnographic exhibits from former French colonies, and a small but well-formed collection of Algerian handicrafts (mostly Kabyle).

(Translated by Google) l was created in 1879 by a learned society known at the time as the Geography and Archeology Society of the Province of Oran. At that time, there was no Museum in Oran, but there was a heritage dispersed in the old town hall of the Place de la République where there was a room called "Salle des Oiseaux" where we kept a beautiful collection of 'Birds, ostrich eggs, monkeys, a polished ax and some other objects of curiosity, as well as in the alleys of the promenade of the pond (Ibn Badis square) were exposed to the weather various Roman inscriptions. The idea of creating a Museum in the city came to Commander Demaeght (Archaeologist and Epigraphist) who launched an appeal to citizens to enrich the existing collections. It has been designated by the members of the Society to collect precious documents with him. Therefore, an appropriate room was essential. Built in 1933 on the occasion of the centenary of French Algeria, the current building; Sis 19 Bd Zabana - Oran -, was officially inaugurated on November 11, 1935 in the premises of the Palais des Beaux Arts and will be called "Musée DEMAEGHT". This Palace includes: The Museum, the Municipal Library and the School of Fine Arts. After independence, the Museum was entrusted to the Municipal People's Assembly of the city of Oran which in 1986 handed over by decree 86-135 of November 12, 1985, the Museum to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism; the name of "Musée Demaeght", was changed to "Musée National Ahmed ZABANA" in Homage to our Martyrs.
