Road trip, first long rides from Dumaguete City- Palo,Leyte. Visited the historical landing of MacArthur on Nov. 25, 2022. MacArthur… later wrote: “'I shall return' seemed a promise of magic to the Filipinos. We have to appreciate the history in the Philippines before we appreciate the beautiful places in other country.

The MacArthur Leyte Landing Memorial National Park (also known as the Leyte Landing Memorial Park and MacArthur Park) is a protected area of the Philippines that commemorates the historic landing of General Douglas MacArthur in Leyte Gulf at the start of the campaign to recapture and liberate the Philippines from Japanese occupation on 20 October 1944. This event led to the largest naval battle of World War II (Also the world's largest naval battle in terms of gross tonnage sunk) and Japan's eventual defeat and surrender after almost three years. The war memorial is located in the municipality of Palo on Leyte island in Eastern Visayas and is one of the region's major tourist attractions. It was declared a national park on 12 July 1977 through Letter of Instructions No. 572 signed by President Ferdinand Marcos

I guess I visited MacArthur Statue 3 times already... Uncle Kemp...thank you for dropping everytime I visit Leyte, and let me enjoy this area for a moment. All memories are kept. And the next time I will visit this place again you are always in my heart. Never forgotten.

Definitely a must-go place for Filipinos visiting Leyte, to be reminded of a part of our culture/history. We visited in a weekday and surprisingly there are some people in the area. It is open to the public, for free. According to a local, this place is very packed during the weekends and holidays. Some families even do picnics by the park’s side grass since it is quite spacious. Best time to visit is in the afternoon (not so hot), and on a weekday for less foot traffic.

Amazing and moving memorial to an incredibly important moment during WW2 that contributed to the defeat of the Japanese. The memorial recognises the role that the USA and allies played flighting side by side with the Filipino fighters, and the strength and courage of the Filipino people who witnessed a multitude of heinous attrocities under Japanese occupation. There is no fee to enter and across the road is another building with some additional info including some pics taken during the time and a statue of the Filipino soldier.

Drop by this famous landmark and see how beautiful this Memorial Park is! Peaceful now all statues capture the historical moment in time, but a long lasting effect after more than 79 years later. Parking along the street in front of the park, but stay away from sidewalk marker. Free parking and visiting.

This was our second time to visit here actually. There were people dancing Zumba early in the morning. Pretty wide place and a great stop to relax under a tree to have a feel on General Douglas MacArthur Landing to recapture and liberate us from the Japanese.

It was nice, but needs lights at night... Also the Philippine flag was not raised. This is a historic place so I think our flag should always be there.

It was my first time to visit a historic place near my ancestors hometown in Dagami, Leyte. The place was clean, wide and spacious. It also has a great view of the Palo Bay, great for selfies and group photos. However, the scorching sun was up when we visited and we have no umbrellas and there were no shelter available to shield us from the hot weather.

This historical place is good and educational for both tourists and locals. The place has a huge parking space and a wide park where you can have a quick stroll. Guards in the area are also kind enough to take group photos.

Should be maintained properly to last. This is a very historical place commemorating the event that took place a long time ago, the success of which resulted us Filipinos speaking good English and not Japanese! The place can get really hot in the afternoons of summer and what better way to cool down by enjoying the fresh coconuts, cold juices and even ice cream being sold right at the front parking area!!!

Picturesque. You can jog around the place. There are many bikers every morning. It is better to go here early in the morning to avoid extreme heat during noon time. If you want, you can just bring your own umbrella. There are security guards roaming around the place to keep the peace. It is along the highway so you can see it easily. However there is no parking lot, so you have to leave your car along the road. There are parks on both sides of the images. Kids usually run around the park. You can also enjoy watching the fountains. You can bring your own food but be sure to bring your trash with you to maintain the cleanliness of the area.

The place is too hot.. not conducive for tourist. Same thing if it rains.. They should build some covered walkway or plant big tress to add more shades and shadows on the area.

nothing extra ordinary - or maybe because we came in the morning? the place looks like it'll be nice to hang out around sunset since there's no place to shade you from the sun - best to come here when the sun's down.

Gen. Douglas MacArthur first landed in the Philippines in Palo, Leyte during world II. The Japanese Imperial Army invaded the Philippines in 1942-1945. It was Gen. Douglas McArthur who was then Chief Of Staff of United States of America. He played the vital role of the Liberation of the Philippines from Japanese Occupancy. In honor of his presence to the Philippines. A landmark in Palo, Leyte was dedicated in his name.

As an American and former Army soldier, this was on my bucket list for many years. It was an honor to stand in the footsteps of a great man who truly believed in his aim to free the filipino people from the brutal Japanese forces. Sadly, he was relueved of his command shortly after. Thanks to him, I am able to have my beautiful filipina fiancee and know that the philippines will be my home very soon. 🇵🇭🇺🇸

The place is still well-maintained and clean. No entrance fee is needed and a security guard is on standby nearby. The baywalk has also been developed and is now more accessible than before. You can ride a tricycle from BIR Palo (Php15) going to the park proper. From there, you can find tricycles lined up across the street should you wish to go home. They can take you to the nearest terminal or stop where you can ride multicabs going back to Tacloban.

This location is an ideal spot for families looking to enjoy a picnic or a quick break from the hustle and bustle of city life. The coastal waters nearby provide a refreshing breeze that can help uplift one's mood. However, it's essential to note that while the area is open to the public, it's important to respect the environment and other visitors. Unfortunately, some dog owners have been letting their pets defecate in the area, which can create a health hazard and spoil the natural beauty of the surroundings. It's important to remind pet owners to be responsible and bring bags to clean up after their pets. Dog owners should also keep their pets on a leash to prevent them from wandering off and disturbing other visitors.

Visited a few times over the last 20 years and the area has certainly been improved, especially after the disaster of Yolanda 6 years ago. New modern restaurant being built at the entrance and a top hotel just down the road, along with a new flood defence sea wall and walk way, band stand and well kept grass area for picnics and childrens play area etc. Fresh coconut vendors just a short walk towards town. Worth a visit.

A good place to start jogging! Palo developed a jogging and bike path of at least 6 kms (stretches 1 km right of the memorial, facing the sea and 5kms on the other direction) You get the benefit of a paved and fenced lane, fresh sea breeze and the sounds of the sea. Fresh buko are available 1 km on the left side route

This is a place every local or foreign tourist should visit whenever they are in Leyte. I've read somewhere a long time ago that this is not the actual spot but is close. Much has improved since this historic place has undergone of lot of polishing, redesigned landscaping, and the new lights just makes visiting in the evenings more pleasant and memorable. This gets too crowded on weekends so if you want lesser photobombers in your photos, early morning visits on week days would be ideal.

Since we got to drive to Tacloban, why not pass by the infamous 'I shall return' in Palo, Leyte?! We got to spend 20minutes on McArthur's Landing Memorial Park, taking photos, basking on noon time's heat while feeling the breeze of the sea. Another moment for us to walk through the memory lane of history. This place is like an esplanade, a good place to relax every morning and afternoon, plus you get a daily reminder of world war II history. 😁
