One of the top 10 breakfasts of my life, and I’m really fat so that’s saying something. The gravies were amazing and fried grits with molasses was out of this world. Pancakes were fluffy with a hint of vanilla, just perfect. It really couldn’t have been any better - can’t wait to come back and try the shrimp and grits and fried chicken wings because we saw both those dishes were popularly ordered and looked amazing, I only wish I could have stayed and eaten another round of food but their overly generous portions had me ready to explode. The highlight, believe it or not, wasn’t even the food - and the food was amazing - the staff was so kind and warm and treated you like family and they were always hustling to make sure your coffee and water was filled and you had whatever you needed. It was an incredible meal and a memorable experience, I’ll definitely be back.

It took a while to get waited on, but once I got my order in for a delicious homemade strawberry 🍓 lemonade, things went smoothly from there. I ordered Omelette #10 which was a 4 egg omelette with shrimp, bacon, avocado, and cheddar - it was delicious! The portions are large, very satisfying, and filling. Oh, and I chose whole wheat toast and home fried potatoes which were included. It's a beautiful place and they have some great art all over, and especially in the back of the restaurant. A visit here is worth the price and I can't wait to go back.

First time in Portland, stayed downtown and walking distance from where we were staying. Arrived to a busy cute restaurant. Wait time isn’t bad, hostess and the crew are very friendly and accommodating. Great food! I had their pancakes and eggs and my friend had omelette. Great place to be for great prices and food. This is a must go when visiting Portland downtown.

Experience/Environment: There’s ART in here! Enough said. There were pieces that were from throwback movies and ones that are more present day culture. Playlist was ON POINT. They pulled out Mary, Blackstreet, Fugees.. Such a vibe. Food: My eyes get so excited to try new things, I ordered catfish plate and the shrimp and grits. We also got waffles and a side of bacon. Shrimp and grits was perfection. OhEmGeee it was so good. Catfish better could use a little help.. But call me bias, because what they lacked in flavor, the vibe of the restaurant made up for. Waffle was on the thinner side but still tasty. Service: Brian was fun and friendly. The restaurant was super busy but he was always around to check in. NTT [[Next Time Try]]: I want it all. Lol. Thank me later ;) Smile, eat, hydrate. Live honest and don’t settle. Hope to see you out there! xo

THEE spot for a scrumptious brunch date on a sunny, summer, Sunday. This place will fill your belly up and leave you beyond satisfied! I ordered the small breakfast with 4 slices of bacon, 2 eggs and a side of fruit. My boyfriend ordered the biscuits and gravy with a side of potatoes. We were able to get a seat at the bar in under 5 minutes. Our server was very kind and offered us some coffee while we browsed the menu. The walls are covered in a light teal color with a large mirror in the regular dining area. Ambiance was great! Overall experience was wonderful. Food was so dang delicious idk what they put in their gravy but it was worth every bite! Come to Grits N Gravy for breakfast/brunch!

So I came across this place searching for a nice breakfast establishment as I was celebrating my birthday weekend at the Courtyard Marriott. I began to speak to a gentleman outside the door who happened to be the owner a black man from down south Brandon. This guys dedication to making sure his customers experienced an at home feel was five stars. His story was page worthy and well deserved the triumph he is experiencing. The first bite of the southern style shrimp and grits, the creamy texture and passion for presentation and flavor blending together was amazing. I later came back to experience the fish which was crispy and flavorful. Please don’t hesitate, this man and his crew of dedicated employees make this one of my favorite places to now have a reason to come back to downtown Portland. Brandon thank you for making my birthday extra pleasurable with the good food and amazing story you shared. From one chef to another you put your food in those grits! 😋

We came in for dinner before a concert at the Star Theater and I was shocked that it was basically empty. The food was absolutely delicious, well priced, and our waiter was so sweet and kind. A great addition to the Portland food scene and we'll be back. My husband said it was the best Po'boy he'd ever gotten from a restaurant (though I think that qualifier was just trying to spare my feelings as I make them for him at home 😂)

This place has some serious great comfort food that is both filling and super delicious. I ordered the chicken fried steak, 3 eggs, toast, with fried grits and my friends got the chicken fried pork chops. The chicken fried steak was a generous portion and had this really nice crispy texture/batter - reminds me of fried chicken. I also tried some of the chicken fried pork chop and was equally pleased. Overall, some really good filling food.

It took 3 tries before I was able to get a seat at this restaurant. I'm from the south and love grits so I kept making the effort to get in and it was well worth it. The food is fantastic! The decor is great too, tin plate ceiling and quirky decor. There is a balcony seating area for busy times but it was only half full when I visited on Monday late morning. The tables are rather close together which is not quite covid compliant and it makes it hard not to overhear your neighbor's conversation. The servers are personable and very helpful, part of the charm of this 5 star diner. I highly recommend giving Grits N' Gravy a try.

Spacious breakfast spot with a cozy atmosphere. The chicken fried steak was good. My poached eggs came nestled in their own space for the sake of my timing. It's the special moment when one lets the yolk run that one has a limited time to devour before things get soggy, so that was perfect. This was also the first time I have had fried grits, not too shabby. The side of molasses was also a very pleasant surprise for me. Am excited to return and try something else

Rating: 6.8 out of 10. Cute restaurant, amazing atmosphere, friendly staff. Food was mid. We arrived near opening for dinner so no crowds. I ordered the fried pork chops and my friend ordered the uptown shrimp and grits. The chops were cooked perfectly. Seasoned well. The collards were undercooked (slightly crunchy) for my taste and had too much vinegar. The rice and gravy were basic. I tried the shrimp and grits and it was good. Could have used a little more seasoning but again that’s my preference. I’d probably try their breakfast but I wouldn’t venture back into downtown Portland again for the dinner.

Grits N’ Gravy is always a delight, the inviting and relaxing ambience is something I cherish each visit. The food is very reasonably priced and come in filling portions that’ll have you ready for a nap when you get home. Last visit I got the fried chicken and waffles with over easy eggs and it was delicious. The chicken was fried to perfection and reminded me of my family’s cooking while the waffle was large and fluffy. Something I’d like to note is how awesome the server was, he noticed we had a unsteady table and fixed it on the spot, we did not ask nor was it major but the effort was surely noticed!

We have been wanting to make it in for breakfast and we finally did today. Luckily at 930 on a Saturday we had no wait at all for a table. Really liked the buttered grits. They weren't the very best I've ever had but they were tasty and it's not easy finding grits on a menu up here. The handmade sausage patty was delicious as was the country gravy. Really liked the biscuit, though it was a little on the crumbly side. My boy gave a big thumbs up on the country fried steak and potatoes. That is his go to dish anywhere we go. The service was friendly and attentive, no complaints at all. There are a few more things on the menu I want to try so we will be back.

This place was phenomenal! Service was quick and friendly and our coffee was always filled (solid coffee too). The portion sizes was massive... probably could have shared one meal between the two of us. BEST Chicken Fried Steak I've ever had (I'm Canadian, so I've only had 4 or 5 in my life). First time trying buttered grits and they were awesome. Didn't even judge me for putting Tabasco on them haha. Also tried the Country Boy Breakfast that had a sausage patty on biscuits and gravy. Amazing and HUGE biscuits. Great music playing too. Just amazing all around!

I was craving for chicken and gravy so I came here for breakfast. The staff is very friendly especially the girl, I didn’t get her name. She recommended the fried grits. It was really good. I don’t eat grits but this fried one like hash brown is delicious. The chicken is also tender and juicy. Highly recommend this place!

City center gem! Great prices and a nice atmosphere. Portions are very generous, in hindsight we should have split 1 entree between the two of us. Big heads up, the meat gravy is beef based, not pork based, which may throw you for a loop. It was delicious and went well with the meal. It seems that every item has a little twist, from the mixed potatoes in the home fries to the spice blend in the maple syrup. Very happy we stopped in!

Fantastic place for a southern style breakfast in Portland. Eggs done right, home fries crunchy on the outside & soft in the middle, and perfect link sausage. The grits are creamy with a good flavor. And the prices low for the area. Service was on par with the food.

Soooo, this is going to sound ridiculous but I was in portland for 7 days and ended up going to this place three times for breakfast, yes they’re that good. I have already written one review for them but I feel like another is warranted because they’re so good. So what did I eat? Biscuits and sausage gravy the first day, biscuits and sausage gravy with sausage patty the second time and country fried pork chops with partner 2 the last time, and yes, each time it got better and better. Wife loved the country fried steak and stuck with that so that should tell you something. The portions are generous and really really great tasting. I can’t wait to go back to portland again just for these guys.

I loved it all! From the art and music, the service and food. We were seated right away with prompt service to ordering and receiving the food. Our group of 3 ordered a small breakfast with bacon and toast, a turkey sausage, mushroom and spinach omelets with buttered grits on the side. And the last person did the downtown shrimp and grits. It was all very well made to order. I highly recommend.

Wonderful breakfast place. I would definitely get one of the country fried items (steak, porkchop, or chicken). The breading was very flavorful and well seasoned. The meals come with plenty of food and at a reasonable price. The hardest part was deciding on which sides I should get. All of the staff we interacted were friendly and helpful. Will return to try other items on the menu.

Literally can't say enough about how delicious this food is! I'm from NC so I know good southern eating. This felt like something my Mama would make. Everything was amazing and portions were way more than I could eat in a sitting so leftovers are what's for dinner! I got the pork chops and was definitely not disappointed!

Located in downtown near old Town. Tried it with one of my regular food groups. Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs and country potatoes. The food was good He gravy was really good. The coffee on the steep end for what it was. Downstairs was about 80% full from the space I saw. This is not a place for fast a lunch, even if you're eating breakfast. Service was friendly, polite and accurate. Will be back to see how their grits are.

Calorie dense, large servings, tipping towards the fatty side, whatever you wish to call it … be prepared. Meals are hearty! flavors are great, staff are really nice. I didn’t eat the grits but my wife said they were delicious. Coffee was ok and prices were reasonable! I expect that during peak times it will be very busy so be prepared for a wait - just like all good breakfast/ brunch places. The building has character which I really approach for a restaurant. would love to sit at the bar next time. Great to see business back downtown, go and support this one. Next time chicken and waffles ! 💥 because it looked super dope.

We got the uptown and the downtown shrimp and grits to compare the two. Maybe would’ve tasted better if we ate in-house instead of getting it as takeout. I am a huge fan of shrimp and grits and while I am not picky, these just weren’t as good as I was hoping for a place that had grits in its name. The uptown is a good twist on traditional for those that would appreciate it. It didn’t hit the spot for me but maybe that’s just cuz of my palette preference. The grits themselves I expected to be a bit creamier and and not just rely on the flavors they are hurried under. Did take out but noticed the place had some charm that would make it worth eating at the actual restaurant if I ever visit again in the future.
