Not to be mixed up with the palace of Pena which is on the mountain! This palace is way nicer to visit and there is a lot more inside. It foes not have the same views as the other palace but it is way more accessible and interesting. This palace is for those interesting in learning a bit more about the Portuguese royal family. This place is not a tourist trap and brings people a lot of new and amazing facts about the Portuguese royals. When in Sinatra this is a must!

This is one of the most beautiful palaces in Sintra. I love the royal touch from each room that I walked into. Very beautiful interior design, garden and spectacular view from the palace. I would recommend that you visit the palace before 12:00 and from 15:00 its not crowded. The staff members at the palace were proffesional and nice.

Sintra is a charming, with it's hills, natural scenery and majestic pine forest. There are some whimsical palaces, extravagant villas, the ruins of a 10th-century Moorish castle and also a breathtaking coastline. A must see. Make sure you are not feared of heights and very steep narrow roads.

We came on a rainy day. For some reason we were not to excited go into the palace and chose to walk through the garden only. It is a tiny garden but lovely. We enjoyed the view and hopped on the trail to walk to. No regrets for us. Overall, it is a good place to visit. It stands in front of a few nice restaurants and positioned just on the way from the train station to the Palace of Peña. The walk to Pena is about 45 min uphill. It was a good exercise and experience for us with very nice views on the way.

Beautiful Palace in the heart of Sintra. Definitely worth the visit. The ticket costs 10€ but is nothing compared to what you gain culturally. The ceilings of the palace are one of the best characteristics of the palace and we can understand why after the visit. They are breathtaking.

(Translated by Google) It was one of the Royal Palaces and today it is owned by the Portuguese State, which uses it for tourism and cultural purposes. With urban implantation, its construction started in the 15th century, although an old construction from the Muslim period was used. It features characteristics of medieval, Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance and romantic architecture. It is considered an example of organic architecture, of a set of bodies apparently separate, but which are part of a whole articulated among themselves, through patios, stairs, corridors and galleries. The Palace was used by the Portuguese Royal Family practically until the end of the Monarchy, in 1910. It was here that D. Manuel received the news of the discovery of Brazil, it was here that D. Afonso V was born and died, it was here that D. Afonso VI, it was here that D. João II was made king. In 2008 it was the most visited palace in Portugal with 408,712 visitors. The building is currently managed by Parques de Sintra - Monte da Lua, as well as several other spaces and monuments in the municipality of Sintra.

Had a very fun day in Sintra. The four of us went there by train on a sunny day in january. Hiked our way up to the castle. Smoked a joint on the top while looking at the great view. After that enjoyed a long and a late lunch. Fun little day out.

Palace in itself is quite big and takes time to roam around the whole inner area. History has been very well kept with all the signs. Views of the village from the balcony were a thing to watch. Movement through the palace was swift and guided. All basic facilities and knowledge boards which kept us involved with the things that we were looking at.

The most eye catching sight in Sintra downtown are two unusual huge conical chimneys rising over the kitchen belonging to the Sintra National palace. The original palace here looked much different built in the 9c by the Moorish rulers, while their stronghold was up the steep hill next door - the Moorish castle. After expelling the Moors, Portugal kings built this palace we see today for themselves, extending it from 12c onwards. Therefore, one can easily recognize architecture mixture of styles. You can circle around for free to see the exteriors which are beautiful. However, likewise the Pena Palace, there was a big line for entering it, so we skipped.

It is worth the visit for sure if you are planning to see the bigger castle after. The family room was amazing and it was my favourite room. And I also loved the kitchen ventilation 😳 the did an amazing job back in days.

Beautiful Moorish castle on the hill top. This is a wonderful site with multiple tourist attractions just around 1.5hrs train ride from Lisbon. It takes a short hike to reach the top of the hill which is very refreshing. The two main attractions are the ruins of the castle and the palace itself which are both beautiful. The view down from the hill top is also breath taking. Spending a day at Sintra is definitely recommended if you're visiting Lisbon.

We have been twice. The first time in 2018 and the second time was 2023. Both times it was beautiful. The history and the uniqueness of the palace was amazing. The bold bright colours and striking architecture of the outside is a stark contrast to the beauty of the inside. My favorite parts are thé inner courtyard, the queens drawing room and the gardens. Both times we have walked down through the gardens by way of the lakes. It is a beautiful walk. The only downside to the palace is how busy it has become in the five years between visits. I felt like there was a big difference.

Amazing 360 views of the surrounding areas. Can see the castle, as well as the lands below. Definitely a must visit when you come to Sintra. You can learn a lot of their rich history and see the lovely decor inside. There are lots of great picture opportunities, and you can even get some ideas where to go from this central location.

We got to Sintra by train from the center of Lisbon, quickly and comfortably. Not far from the railway station is the town center. After 10 minutes of walking, through a picturesque place, the interesting building of the National Palace, dominated by two huge chimneys, can be seen. Due to the lack of time, I did not enter the facilities, but decided to visit as many attractions as possible.

Sintra is by far one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. Lots of woodland walks, beautiful palace and grounds as well as a selection of shops and restaurants. Only half an hour drive away from Lisbon city centre or an hour on the train. I would highly recommend visiting.

Something to see in your life time. At least once. The gardens are wonderful. Great hike. Can take much effort. Trek up to the holy cross. There are some small trails that will pop you out in places to get amazing pics of the palace.

From the outside, the Sintra National Palace doesn't look that spectacular, but from the inside, the Palace is beautiful, worth a visit. Every room is differently decorated, with beautiful tiles and painted ceilings. The visit of the whole Palace will take at least 1 hour.

Limited parking, beautiful Palace. A nice collection of period tiles art and architecture. Great views of the area if there is no fog or mist. Be mindful of slippery floors if it is wet outside. Nice gift shop.

The palace is beautiful, and the view is spectacular. The staff allowed us to pass the massive line with our pre-purchased tickets because we had a baby in our company, which was very nice. Otherwise, the line looked like a 1.5 hour wait mid day.

I actually had a better time here than at Peña Palace. I got here at 5:30 on a Wednesday and basically had the entire place to myself. They were roping off rooms as I got closer to the end of the palace but I felt I got to see most of it. There are a couple of rooms that have really intricate detail on the ceiling that make it worth visiting

All sintra is amazing but if you go with the tourguide of "cool tour" Lisbon- tour company, the trip would be even more great. Not expensive at all and you see not only Sintra but 2-3 more places. It is around 75 Euro per person, picking from the hotel, so great!

Sintra National Palace is a stunning place to visit. The palace has intricate tile work throughout and make sure to check out the ceilings. One room is definitely a "Wow" room, so many scenes to view, it is hard to know where to focus your attention. The town is also worth a quick tour through.

(Translated by Google) After the completion of the main restoration works, this "home of the Portuguese monarchy" regained courage, consistency and an aroma of the past that cannot be "escaped". Ignoring our history, our past is a poisoned present that we "offer" to foreign tourism. To visit, without haste, tasting, step by step. A brick floor worn by the steps of abandonment, rooms, corridors, living rooms, ceilings, various memorabilia, a real kitchen, everything impels us, as if a mental and urgent "feed back". Sintra, in short.

Nice visit, you go from room to room, with explanations on panels for each one. 10 euros for adults, no discount for student (a pity). The visit lasts approximately 1h. Not the most beautiful palace, but it carries for sure a lot of history.

Compared to the other Palaces I’ve visited this one seemed quite small somehow. It was still very beautiful but at the time I went (December 2021) a lot of the rooms/areas were under renovation. The art and history is still totally worthwhile but it is quite the trek up the hill to get there. The views of Sintra are amazing.

It's a beautiful place, You have many options to arrive, unfortunely we had something call tuc tuc by someone call Diogo who have promised us a travel that he havent completed, just be careful about that, enjoy the Ginja with chocolate and cherries and the trevesinhas in the piriquita its a good option.

This palace looks small from the outside but is quite large on the inside. It took us around 90 minutes to go through the entire thing. Lots of interesting history and relics. The ceilings are very cool and have lots of details.

We brought a ticket at 17:50, but no one told us that palace was closed by 18:00! So personnel followed us into each room and closing doors behind us. But the castle is fascinating! It’s not so royal, as you can expect, but there is a lot of exciting stuff there. Unfortunately we were unable to visit the gardens, due to time restrictions.

  • 5/5 Daniel K. 2 years ago on Google
Great place but the queues and crowds are mental. Try and go on a weekday and remember to buy tickets online! Park only tickets will give you access to the terraces and grounds which in my opinion is good enough.

  • 5/5 Delia V. 11 months ago on Google
Great place to visit when in Lisbon. Not expensive ticket, I paid 14 euros to visit the palace and the gardens. Ticket easy to buy online. I had just a couple of hours, so it was not too much time to visit the gardens properly, but for sure, I'll come back one day and buy the ticket for the gardens only. ( This was information that I received it from the local guide as it couldn't find it online when I booked the tickets. ) Even if there are so many people that are in a que to enter the castle, everything it is organized, so you don't wait more than 30 minutes.

I was looking for a place to learn about Portuguese History. I did! Maybe Google Portuguese Royal Family before coming to have a good idea of who’s who. Beautiful palace! I did 3 different wows when moving from one room to another because there are amazing surprise along the way. Gorgeous and just a few steps away from the station.

The palace is beautiful. One can learn a lot. We took a tour and that made it more informative. The walk from the parking lot is steep but not long. I saw out of shape people do it. The whole area, is very pretty.

It's a very big and beautiful palace, and you can see commentary everywhere in the palace, where you can then imagine what the royals were like back in those days. It's quite well maintained and there is a toilet at the end of the walk. 9 euros for adult entrance if you have a Lisbon card (it's usually 10 Euros) and you can pay for senior price if you are over 65. There's also a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) we spent about 45 mins here but if you were to read everything carefully you'd spend about 1-1.5 hours.

  • 3/5 Eduardo González M. 10 months ago on Google
it is nice to visit. However, the queue and waiting time and the people, It is packed with tourists and to visit the interior you must walk with the people's flow. Next time, i would do it early in the morning Buy the ticket before you come to Sintra

  • 4/5 Anais G. 5 months ago on Google
Beautiful castle, if you're up for it, walk to the castle through the pena Park, it is quite nice, but your legs will feel like marshmallow when you finish the climb up. You need to buy the ticket outside the castle and you go in by time slot. Try to be on time, but they might let you in if you are a bit late. From the entrance to the castle it takes about 30 minutes walking but there is a bus that can take you to the castle. However, the queue is quite long.

Amazingly beautiful medieval palace. Doesn't look much on the outside but inside is a revelation. Don't go to Sintra without seeing this palace, it was my favorite of all. Painted ceilings, Portuguese tiles everywhere and you can stand beneath those huge kitchen chimneys. Highly recommended.

  • 4/5 Traveling O. 6 months ago on Google
Sintra National Palace is smack in the middle of the town. Get there early! It's very popular. We had a private guide who was very informative. The first thing I noticed about the Palace--it's two very different periods, styles of architecture slammed together. This seems to be common in Europe as each new King wants to modernize and put their own personality onto their abodes. This palace has elements of Moorish, Spanish, English, and even Chinese influences. Beautiful tiles throughout. This is a sprawling palace, so allow yourself ample time. It's well worth your time.

Beautiful Palace, great placards in Portuguese and English. Pay special attention to the magnificent tiles! We visited in early December and had no crowds.

When you are in a place with history of thousand year you know you are in a special place. It is amazing e.g. to think that something specific happened in a certain room in 1413. There were several kings related to the palace. It has been maintained really well and must be something people in Portugal are proud of. There is a fee to get in but it is definitely worth it. I’m sure this place is crowded during the main tourist season, so it’s good to make a visit other times, especially if you want to spend decent time in learning and studying.

Excellent royal palace. The tour is self-explanatory and fascinating, the rooms are gloriously decorated with tiles and so many other motifs. Going into the kitchens towards the end was impressive. The two conical towers finally make sense.

An absolute highlight of the whole Portugal trip! The interior of this place is just absolutely stunning. It's also an easy walk from the train station in Sintra, no bus needed.

It is complicated to describe such a gorgeous palace. When you think 🏰 castles are no longer going to captivate you, I fell for this one, too. Magical, intriguing, and captivating. A must visit place if you come to Sintra.

A must see if going to Sintra or staying in Lisbon. It is a very beautiful and whimsical palace. It was very busy when we’re there yesterday so it must be quite crazy in the summer.
