Leave yourself a few hours to explore this site. It is more then just the two wells. There are several courtyards, towers, statues, and secret passage ways to check out. Enjoyed the caves and all the hidden wonders. Worth the 10€ highly recommend.

Amazing historical place to visit!! You’ll spend hours walking through the gardens and all the hidden trails. The architecture is incredible and the cafe onsite is so lovely to take a break at. Highly recommend dedicating a good portion of the day here!

One of the more popular tourist hot spots in Sintra, for sure. Most come for the famous initiation well but there are other cool spots worth checking out while you visit this location. This is a part of Quinta Regaleira and you can access the well by purchasing a ticket there. You can get here by foot, but some people buy the bud package. If you are not very fitness oriented it might be better to go for paid transport as it is a lot of hiking uphill and some streets are very narrow with tons of traffic. Entrance tickets are 11 bucks on site and be careful where you purchase online as some sites will charge up for processing fee, and more. Tickets can be purchased on site either at the line or the automated ticket station. Line length and duration varies depending on the day, so come early on weekends if you don’t want to wait too long here or at the well. Even on a low volume day, the line for the initiation well can take between 15 to 30 minutes, but it was the only line I encountered here on a Wednesday. There are maps and signs everywhere to lead you around. The place is plagued by construction though, so be prepared for alternative paths as many are closed off. There are some ramps but would not def would not qualify this place as handicap friendly due to all the steeps stairs and lack of elevators of lifts. Beautiful sights and spacious site but not necessarily something kids might enjoy as it’s more about the history and the art even though they do try to make it more like a theme park experience with the maps and such.

I've been seeing photos of this for so long and in person it was just as gorgeous. It was kind of hard to find, but follow the map and signs and you should be OK. It is beautiful from the top and the bottom and ALL of the grounds are stunning so be sure to roam. You go in at the top and then wind down, exiting in a cave tunnel.

This was one of my favorite places in Sintra! The grounds are spectacular and the well and caves are eerie and magical. I wish we'd been allowed in more of the house (I bet there are all kinds of secret passages) but just the well was worth price of admission.

Better than all of my expectations. I’ve had this on my bucket list since I first saw the BBC’s hidden histories piece on it. Being an engineer myself I have a keen appreciation for engineering marvels. They never cease to amaze me. What’s more amazing is that a vast majority predate modern tools. A lot of these were created with hand chisels and almost willed into form. The initiation well is one such marvel. In fact it’s one of the “newer” ones. It’s difficult to put into words…and pictures only do partial justice. You’ll just have to get there to see and feel this place. Don’t let the long queue scare you off. You do get to go all the way down and then wander the world underground as well. I could post more pics but that would just spoil the surprise, wouldn’t it?

Very nice place to enjoy. However it’s very crowded and you can’t enjoy as much as you want. You have to go down with the people but you can go down as many times you want. To get in side you have to pay 10euros but you have a lot of things to do besides the well. One thing, it’s almost impossible to park there! The street is very very narrow, so be careful!!!

This five story staircase into the ground is perhaps my favourite architecture in Portugal. We went in late November and off season, but there was still a crowd on the train from Lisbon. Luckily, the crowd got on the bus to the Pena Palace/Moorish Castle and we walked to the uncrowded gardens surrounding the Initiation Well. We went down the stairs and exited through a series of caves at the bottom. It was more than awesome. I am so glad we went.

Far the more amazing and shocking place in Portugal for me. It's so magical, it's like a fairly tale, also the whole garden makes you fell like in a movie.

Climbing down the spiral staircase of the well was one of the most thrilling experiences in my life! I felt like I was having a journey to the centre of the Earth! Some of the people in my group didn't dare to go down, as they had some fobias. I plucked the courage and I was really rewarded!

The best place to visit in Sintra. Huge park with palace, chapel and different mysterious buildings . There are interesting types of plants from different parts of the world. All of this seems to be amazing for all visitors

The whole gardens are beautiful and the well is impressive. Cool steps going down towards the bottom and into caves underneath the gardens - one comes out at a really nice waterfall. We nearly didn’t make it over to Sintra due to weather but we were so glad we did as it was stunning.

Went to the palace and initiation well with air BNB tour. The tour was called "This is Sintra, a day to remember" and it was amazing. Marta was an amazing host and had tons of information to share with the small group. Highly recommend using this tour if you are thinking of spending a day in Sintra. The well was amazing, an inverted tower with beautiful craftsmanship dating to the turn of the 1900s. The tunnels at the bottom are lit with led that provide a nice atmosphere and an almost magical vibe.

The well itself can be found in a park with grottos, tunnels, cute lakes, but they are not well kept. The Well is dark, deep, wet, slippery, a long way down, you cannot see much, but not much to see anyway. Bring water proof shoes or at least not flip-flops. When we visited some parts of the park were closed due to maintenance.

We arrived a bit late in the day and were on line at 11....took about 30 minutes to the entrance. WORTH IT!. Hard to get a good photo and not slip on the stairs at the same time. I imagined what it must have been like for the blindfolded initiates! Another awe-inspiring spot.

Pretty cool but not much history or explanation, just from walking through. If you pay for the audio tour or go on a private tour im sure there is some significance but otherwise you're just walking down a wide spiral staircase. Watch out for instagramers posing on every turn. Will be a long walk down if so

Extremely cool and should definitely be on the list of castles to go see. This was my favorite. There were tons of people waiting in line to see it and tons of folks walking down the well. It was not possible to stop and get high quality photos. Maybe it is best to go right when it opens

The Initiation Well it's just one of the many interesting spots inside the Quinta da Regaleira. There is a lot of mystery surrounding this place and the descent in addition to the tunnels, really feels like a mystical experience. We actually arrived at Quinta da Regaleira at 10 before it opened and after the ticket check we immediately went to the Initiation Well. This allowed us to enjoy it without too many people. When we got out the queue was really long. I would recommend, if you can, to prioritize the visit to the well and then enjoy the rest of the park. Definitely something I have never seen before and made the whole visit pretty awesome.

The best attraction in Quinta da regaleira. It is really amazing. I have never seen something like this in my life. The queue to enter in the attraction was quite long (about 40 minutes) but it is totally worth. I definitely recommend to visit Initiation Well!

The Initiatic Well is a 27m deep subterranean tower and its an allegorical representation of the passage between heaven & hell. The bottom of the inverted tower, has a underground tunnel that leads to waterfall. The depth of the lake of the waterfall is about 1m deep and it has a series of poles on which you have to walk to cross it! Ofcourse, taking the passage from up is safer and kid & elderly friendly.

Beautiful place! Try to visit on a weekday, be there at opening (9:30), and buy your ticket online! This way you have a chance to avoid the crowd and see the well alone like me!

A really romantic walk around in the heart of Sintra. There’s lots to see including the well (which is the highlight). Well worth the entrance fee

A sort of mystic atmosphere surrounds this landmark. Used by Freemasons and other organisations alike, it speaks to the imagination of the visitor. Add this to your bucket list if it's not already the case!

Well worth the visit, took us 3 hours to see it all, only complaint was main building as the museum.didnt really explain anything. Seems you need to pay audio guide to learn anything

Really stunning place, but it's also tourism overloaded. For the park you need 1-2 h. Last entry is at 5pm and the park close at 6pm. You should buy a online ticket, because you can use the faster route for entry.

A must watch place when you are in Sintra,. The whole Quinta da Regaleira is amazing and impressive but for for me this was the highlight. I think we got lucky with relatively fewer crowd. The coolest place about the caste where this well belongs to. Not that tall as it might see, it takes just really couple for minutes to walk through it. It also takes couple of minutes or hours to stand in a line to get to it. From my observation, totally suitable even for small children.

National icon. A true delight. Great terraces with views and grand rooms within. The smaller roomers in the older part a delight. Take a Tuktuk from town approx 10 euros each and then walk up (approx 10 mins) from the main gate to the palace.

This place is pretty cool. Although not steeped in history as it’s not that old, it doesn’t matter. It’s a perfect unique picture location. Somewhere different. The grounds around it are really nice although I didn’t have so much time to explore them.

  • 5/5 crafty travellers w. 2 years ago on Google
Great attraction is worth to see. You can spend whole day and explore. Buy tickets in advance to avoid waiting in queue. And save extra 5% through the website. On entrance you see QR code who direct you to booking on website. Gardens are beautiful and a lot of paths up and down. Cafe with drink and food on site. Reasonable prices. Castle is beautiful inside and outside ( outside needs to be repaint - I think) - if you are not fan of visiting inside - don’t book ticket. It’s pointless pay extra. We were disappointed how they organised visiting in the castle. Crowds (even is not season yet and in the middle of the week) I cannot imagine what is going on during summer. We skipped queue and enjoyed exploring outside of the palace than inside. Shame we paid extra money for inside. Is a lot of trails around which we used - see our Strava, Wikiloc or All Trails. Hope you enjoy this visit as we did.

After spending the morning here, I would recommend a visit, it's very steep in some places but it's very beautiful. There are different structures in and around the garden's and you can take a look around the castle. The well itself is very interesting. There is a café onsite and the staff are friendly and helpful, the food is good and the tea was great.

  • 5/5 Rebecca B. 11 months ago on Google
Such an incredible thing to see! Definitely buy your tickets online in advance to go to the Palace de Reggia and when you go inside the Palace there might be a separate line to the well, this is because it's protected and they must limit the number of people inside at one time, but definitely worth a visit!

  • 5/5 Victor B. 11 months ago on Google
Stay in Sintra to see all the castles for at least 48 full hours, better 72 hours; to slowly, calmly hike around this massive National park full of architectural wonders. It’s like nothing else in the world!

I've been here twice so far (5 years ago, and this summer) and although I was with a bigger group and the wait was longer this time around, the Initiate's Well (and the rest of the gardens of the Quinta da Regaleira) never disappoints. It is absolutely magical.

A must-do experience for those visiting Sintra. The whole place is quite well organised and the family was happy with their experiences. Ultimately, that is the only thing that matters... Otherwise, we wouldn't return to this place in the near future. One time is more than enough.

Very cool structure. We started our Itinerary here for Sintra, stood in the left line (pre-purchased tickets) at the gate prior to it opening. Once the gates opened we moved quickly in and had our tickets scanned at the horse stable entrance (stay to your left once your in the gate). Everyone made their way to the initiation well as it is recommended which means you will be in a line of people while you make your decent in the well. Brief stops to take photos are okay but nothing longer that will hold up others. The caverns are neat also. The gardens are very cool with various things to explore. We wish we had explored here longer than we did.

More stairs and steps and went for the highlight - initiation well. It was designed to represent the nine circles of Dante’s Inferno and features a gothic spiral staircase that descends around 88 feet underground to a maze of tunnels. It was said to be used for ceremonial purposes. As I walked down the stairs, the air starts to feel cooler and it’s an amazing sight to look both upwards and downwards. 😍

This is probably one of the most unique destinations I have ever been to. Look of course for the tunnel but also many caves

This place is quite the site to behold, truely amazing. I'm so glad I was able to get the opportunity to see such a place. We went in mid September so it wasn't packed. Tour guide mentioned that several times on our trip. But it was perfect for us, great weather, great guide, beautiful man made structure.

Very cool, but overly busy. We went at the very end of the day before the gardens closed and so the wait was substantially shorter than when we first went by and scoped it out. The surrounding castle and gardens were fabulous though and worth the visit!

Just wow! I personally recommend getting a tour guide to take you here. It's far more meaningful if you understand the meaning of this well and all the intricate details. This was a highlight for me nd and something I was looking forward to on our trip to Portugal. I highly recommend. Just beautiful!

A must-do if you are in the area. Stunning gardens and very interesting architecture. The views from the top are great. We had a private tour guide walk us through and provide tidbits of history and facts.
